A paid launch also requires a supported country, a published pricing plan, a completed payments profile, and bank details. WordPress publishers can use Site Kit, while other CMSs can use the code snippet directly.
This guide covers the setup sequence, the difference between subscriptions and contributions, page targeting, nonprofit restrictions, WordPress installation, and checks to perform before launch.

What Reader Revenue Manager does
Reader Revenue Manager is Google’s Publisher Center workflow for adding reader-facing prompts to a publication. Depending on the model you choose, a prompt can sell access to restricted articles, ask readers for a contribution, collect registrations, promote a newsletter, run a survey, or trigger a custom call to action.

What to prepare before opening the setup flow
Google account and publication access
- Use a Google Account that has access to the publication.
- Add the publication in Google Publisher Center before opening RRM. Publisher Center holds the publication name, location, verified website URLs, and contact information.
- Confirm that you or your CMS administrator can edit the site theme, template, or equivalent header injection area. Without that permission, you cannot install the required snippet.
Brand and organization information
For a paywall or contribution request, prepare your personal or business information and a publication logo. Google recommends a PNG or JPEG logo at 1000 × 1000 pixels; 512 × 512 pixels is the stated minimum. Use a square, legible mark because it may be displayed inside the reader prompt.
Country and eligibility check
Check Google’s current country list before designing a paid launch. Google separates countries that support payment collection from countries where only engagement features are available. A publication can therefore be able to use registration, newsletter, survey, or other non-payment prompts without being able to collect subscription or contribution payments in that country. Treat the country list as a launch prerequisite, not as an administrative detail.
Choose the reader-revenue model before configuring anything
The first practical decision is whether readers are buying access or supporting the publication. Google documents two payment-oriented prompt types: a paywall and a contributions request.
| Model | Reader action | When it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paywall | Subscribe to gain access to restricted content | A publication has defined members-only or premium articles | Pages must use the relevant product and access configuration |
| Contributions request | Send a configured contribution to support the publication | A publication wants financial support without selling a recurring content-access entitlement | Google distinguishes contributions from voluntary charitable donations |
Contributions are not the same as a general donation button. Google’s documentation describes a contribution as an exchange of value and does not treat ordinary voluntary donations as an RRM payment model. If the goal is charitable giving rather than a reader-revenue exchange, use an appropriate external donation platform or a custom call to action where permitted.
Other prompt types
RRM also lists engagement prompts such as survey, newsletter signup, reader registration, metering, and custom CTA. A custom CTA can send a reader to a destination you specify, subject to Google’s configuration rules. These options are useful when payment collection is unavailable or when the publication’s immediate goal is an audience action rather than revenue.
Step-by-step: create the publication and start RRM
- Add the publication in Publisher Center. Enter the publication details, location, verified website URLs, and contact information. Save the publication before attempting the RRM flow.
- Select the publication. In Publisher Center, open the publication you intend to configure.
- Open Reader Revenue Manager. Choose Reader Revenue Manager from the publication’s available products.
- Select an initial content access prompt. Choose the prompt that matches your first launch: paywall, contributions request, survey, newsletter signup, reader registration, metering, or custom CTA.
- Complete the one-time instructions. Google allows additional prompts to be added later, but you must complete the initial prompt’s onboarding before adding more.
- Enter organization and prompt details. Supply the requested personal or business information and upload the prepared logo when the chosen prompt requires it.
Choosing one prompt first does not permanently lock the publication into one model. It establishes the initial configuration; additional prompts can be added after the one-time setup is complete.

Nonprofit rules you need to know
During onboarding, a nonprofit must self-declare its nonprofit status. Google documents a significant restriction: subscription and contribution CTAs are disabled for nonprofit organizations in RRM.
A nonprofit can still use a custom CTA to direct readers to its existing donation platform, or use non-monetization prompts such as registration, newsletter signup, or a survey. Do not plan a standard RRM subscription or contribution flow for a nonprofit account; design the reader journey around the available custom or engagement CTA instead.
Configure pricing plans for a paid publication
If you selected a paywall, create the plans that readers will see in Publisher Center. A plan is not immediately available on the site when it is created: new plans start in Draft status. Change the status to Live only after the price, billing period, trial, and product targeting are correct.
Subscription billing periods
Google lists these recurring subscription periods:
- Monthly
- Quarterly
- Half-yearly
- Annually
Trial choices
The available trial settings are no trial, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, or 60 days. A trial changes when billing starts, so make the duration clear in the prompt and in your own subscription terms.
Contribution recurrence
Contribution plans can use configured amounts and recurrence periods. Set the amount and cadence that match the support proposition you present to readers, then verify how the prompt describes the contribution before making the plan live.
Plan launch checklist
- Confirm the currency and amount shown to the intended audience.
- Choose the recurring period or contribution cadence.
- Choose one of the supported trial settings for a subscription, or select no trial.
- Associate the plan with the correct product or content category.
- Review the reader-facing wording.
- Change the plan from Draft to Live.
Keep separate plans distinct when different content types have different entitlements. A single generic snippet on every page can expose the wrong offer or fail to apply the intended access rule.

Complete the payments profile and bank setup
Payment collection requires a payments profile. Create or add the profile requested by Publisher Center and complete the applicable identity or organization verification. The exact verification requirements depend on the account and organization details you submit.
Add the bank account that should receive publisher payouts. Google warns that a publisher cannot receive payments without bank details, even if a pricing plan and prompt have been configured. Check the account holder information carefully so it matches the verified individual or organization.
Google’s setup documentation includes a 5% transaction-fee figure, including credit-card fees, but the page does not attach a publication year to that number. Fees can change, so verify the current terms in your account before publishing a price or forecasting net revenue. Do not treat the undated figure as a guaranteed current rate.

Install the RRM code on your site
Get the correct snippet
- In Publisher Center, open the publication and select Reader Revenue Manager.
- Choose Add code snippet to your site.
- If onboarding is complete and your CMS integration exposes it, retrieve the snippet through the CMS Sync area.
- Copy the generated code exactly as provided.
Place it in the document head
Add the snippet to the <head> of every page template where the selected prompt should be eligible to load. The code must be present on the page; configuring a prompt in Publisher Center alone is not enough.
Use your CMS’s global header or theme template when the same behavior applies across a section. If only certain article types are gated, use the relevant article template or conditional insertion rule. Google specifies one RRM snippet per page, so do not paste multiple competing RRM snippets into one document.
Map snippets to page behavior
Page targeting is where many installations go wrong. Match the snippet to the page’s intended access state:

- Open-access snippet: Use this on articles that should remain open when a paywall is configured.
- Product-ID snippet: Use the product-specific snippet on pages governed by a particular subscription or paid product.
- Contribution or survey prompt: Use the applicable prompt snippet across the articles where you want that request to appear.
- Separate content categories: If different categories use different plans, put the corresponding snippet on each category’s page template.
For example, a publication with a premium investigations section and an open news section can place the product-ID snippet on investigation templates and the open-access snippet on news templates. Do not use a premium product snippet on an article that readers should access without subscribing.
WordPress installation options
Recommended route: Site Kit
For WordPress, Google recommends integration through Site Kit. Use the Site Kit setup to connect the site and expose the Reader Revenue Manager configuration, then verify that the generated snippet is being added to the intended page types.
Alternative route: code-insertion plugin
If the Site Kit route is unavailable, Google’s alternative instructions use a third-party code-insertion plugin. Retrieve the snippet from Publisher Center’s CMS Sync area and configure the plugin to place it in the site header or the specific templates that need it.
Whichever route you choose, inspect the rendered page source or browser developer tools to confirm that the snippet is actually present in the document head. A plugin can be active while a theme condition, cache layer, or template rule prevents the code from appearing on the article you are testing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add optional subscription or contribution buttons
After the RRM snippet is installed, publishers can add subscription or contribution CTA buttons in the page body using Google’s documented button attributes. These buttons give readers an explicit action point in addition to any prompt that appears automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the button attributes associated with the product or contribution configuration you created. Place buttons where the surrounding copy explains the value or purpose of the action, and test them on both desktop and mobile layouts. A button cannot replace the required page snippet; it depends on the RRM implementation being present.
Best Value
Test before making the launch public
- Open a representative article. Test at least one open article, one article governed by a paid product, and one article that should show a contribution or engagement prompt.
- Confirm the prompt loads. Visit the live or staging URL in a clean browser session and check that the intended prompt appears.
- Check page targeting. Verify that an open article is not treated as premium and that a premium article is associated with the correct product ID.
- Check the plan state. Confirm that the intended pricing plan is Live rather than Draft.
- Check payment readiness. Verify that identity or organization checks are complete and that bank details are saved.
- Test the reader path. Follow the prompt far enough to confirm that the plan, amount, recurrence, and trial wording are correct. Stop before a real charge unless you are intentionally performing a controlled transaction.
- Check mobile rendering. Ensure the prompt and any body button are usable without covering navigation or article text.
- Recheck after caching. Purge page, CDN, and browser caches if the snippet or prompt does not appear immediately.
Common setup failures and fixes
The prompt never appears
First confirm that the snippet is in the page’s <head>. Then check that you used one snippet, selected the correct prompt, and are testing a page type covered by that prompt. A cached page may still be serving an older template, so purge relevant caches and retest.
A plan exists but readers cannot see it
New plans begin in Draft. Open the plan in Publisher Center, review its settings, and change it to Live. Also confirm that the page carries the corresponding product-ID snippet.
Readers see the wrong offer
Inspect the page template and conditional rules. A product-ID snippet intended for one category may have been added globally, or an open-access snippet may have been omitted from pages that should remain free. Correct the template mapping and retest each page type.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Payments cannot be completed
Check the publication’s country eligibility for payment features, not merely engagement features. Then review the payments profile, verification status, and bank account details. If the country supports only engagement prompts, use a non-payment CTA rather than attempting to force a paid flow.
A nonprofit account cannot create a subscription or contribution CTA
This is an RRM policy restriction, not necessarily a configuration error. Use a custom CTA that directs readers to the nonprofit’s existing donation platform, or select an engagement prompt.
WordPress pages behave inconsistently
Check whether the snippet is being inserted by Site Kit, a code-insertion plugin, the theme, or more than one system. Remove duplicate implementations, confirm the active theme template, and inspect the rendered HTML on a page that fails.
When to contact Google support
Google directs publishers with implementation problems to its support team for help enabling Reader Revenue Manager, managing configuration, and troubleshooting implementation. Include the publication identifier, the affected URL or template, the prompt or product involved, and the steps already checked.

<head>of each relevant page. - Open-access and product-specific pages mapped to the right snippets.
- Representative desktop and mobile pages tested.
- Support contacted with implementation details if prompts or payments still fail.
What a correct implementation looks like
A working setup has four parts in alignment: the publication exists in Publisher Center, the selected prompt and plan are configured, the payments profile is ready when money is collected, and each target page contains the matching RRM snippet. If any one of those parts is missing, readers may see no prompt, the wrong offer, or no way to complete payment.
