To enable gifted memberships, first turn on channel memberships in YouTube Studio. Viewers then buy gifts from the live chat of an eligible livestream or Premiere, and potential recipients must opt in. India is listed as a supported location for channel memberships, but eligibility and the gifting control are not guaranteed for every channel or account.
What creators and viewers need to do
There are three separate parts to gifting:
- Creator: Enables channel memberships and sets up levels and perks in YouTube Studio.
- Viewer buying a gift: Purchases gift memberships in the live chat of an eligible livestream or Premiere.
- Potential recipient: Opts in to allow gifts and meets YouTube’s eligibility conditions.
Gifting is not switched on from the Studio setup screen as a separate purchase feature. It depends on memberships being active and the gifting option appearing in an eligible live chat.
Check whether your channel can enable memberships
YouTube lists India among the locations where eligible creators can use channel memberships. The published minimums for monetization eligibility include 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the past 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the past 90 days. These thresholds do not guarantee acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) or access to every feature.
YouTube also requires creators to be at least 18, live in an available location, accept and comply with the Commerce Product Module (CPM), and meet content conditions. Videos set as Made for Kids and videos with music claims count as ineligible for memberships; some music channels may also be excluded. Check the current YouTube monetization eligibility guidance and channel memberships requirements for your channel’s status.

Turn on channel memberships in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, sign in to the YouTube account for your channel and open YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, select Earn, then Memberships. The Memberships tab appears only when the channel is eligible.
- Select Get started and follow the on-screen setup prompts. Accept the Commerce Product Module when prompted; YouTube requires it before creators can earn membership revenue.
- Create membership levels and perks. Choose benefits you can deliver consistently and explain any terms clearly.
- After setup, check the live chat during an eligible livestream or Premiere for the Membership gifting control.
If you have just been accepted into YPP, the Memberships feature may take up to two days to appear while YouTube reviews the channel. The setup path and review timing are described in YouTube’s instructions for turning memberships on or off.
How a viewer buys gifted memberships
- Sign in to YouTube and join the channel’s eligible livestream or Premiere.
- Open the live-chat controls and select Membership gifting, if it is available.
- Choose how many viewers to gift memberships to, then review the amount shown at checkout and complete the purchase.
YouTube describes gift levels as the closest highest available price level up to and including US$9.99. Use the amount shown in your own checkout: do not assume a fixed rupee price from a channel’s regular membership levels. A purchase is considered fulfilled once YouTube distributes the first gift membership. A countdown ticker may appear in chat for a limited time; distribution still proceeds if the livestream or chat ends before the announcement.

The number of gifts, the purchaser’s channel name and profile picture are public in chat. This information may also be shared with third-party services that have access through the channel’s API. See YouTube’s gift-membership instructions for the purchase flow and conditions.
How recipients opt in and who can receive a gift
Potential recipients must allow gifts before YouTube can select them. A recipient must also be subscribed to the channel and have interacted with it recently. To opt in, use one of these routes:

- In live chat, select ALLOW GIFTS or the pinned membership-gifting control, then turn on Allow gifts.
- On a channel or watch page, select Join > More > Gift settings and switch on Allow gifts.
To opt out later, return to Gift settings and switch the setting off. A recipient must be signed in with a YouTube channel that is not a Brand Account; an existing member of that channel cannot receive its gifted membership. If selected, the recipient is announced in chat and notified by email.
Gifted access lasts up to one month. It is non-recurring, so the recipient is not charged when it ends; gifts are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash. YouTube’s gift help page explains the recipient requirements and gift terms.

India availability, prices and payment details
India’s inclusion in the channel-membership availability list means eligible India-based creators can use memberships. It does not establish that every channel has passed review or that the gifting control will appear for every viewer in India. If the control is missing, check the channel’s membership status and try an eligible livestream or Premiere before drawing conclusions about regional availability.
YouTube’s India membership pricing page lists current level prices from ₹59 to ₹39,999; its rollout of new pricing began gradually in May 2025. These are prices for channel membership levels, not a definitive price list for gift purchases. Older levels may still use legacy pricing, so check the actual channel and gift checkout amount. For recurring channel memberships, YouTube says viewers in India may need to verify or re-enter payment details under RBI eMandate requirements. That guidance concerns recurring membership billing; it should not be mistaken for a fixed gifted-membership price. If gift checkout says “We couldn’t verify your country,” YouTube recommends trying another network or device and turning off an active VPN or proxy. See YouTube’s billing and payment guidance.
Track gifts and understand promotional memberships
Creators can review gift and redeemed-membership counts in YouTube Studio under Analytics > Revenue > How you make money > Memberships. Use Memberships Type and select a time period to inspect the data. YouTube says creators receive 70% of membership revenue after applicable taxes and fees are deducted, with transaction costs currently covered by YouTube. Actual proceeds can vary with taxes and channel arrangements. Details are in YouTube’s membership analytics and management guide.
Creators with a membership tier below US$5 may be offered promotional gifts to distribute. These are not charged to the creator or viewer and do not earn revenue. YouTube says they are offered on the first of each month, do not roll over and must be distributed in sets of five before paid gifts can be purchased. They are distributed from a livestream or Premiere’s live chat and are not currently available for Brand Accounts. See YouTube’s promotional gift information.
Troubleshoot missing controls or failed gifts
- Memberships is missing in Studio: The tab appears only for eligible channels. Check YPP acceptance, the published thresholds, location, content restrictions and required agreements.
- You were just accepted into YPP: Allow up to two days for YouTube’s review and membership activation.
- Membership gifting is missing in chat: Confirm memberships are active and that you are viewing an eligible livestream or Premiere. The channel or account may not qualify, or the feature may not be available in that context; the documentation does not establish a single India-specific cause.
- A viewer is not receiving a gift: Check that they are subscribed, recently engaged, opted in, using a non-Brand Account channel and not already a member.
- Checkout cannot verify the country: Try another network or device, and disable an active VPN or proxy.
