What you need before configuring health tracking
Have the Venu 3 charged, your compatible phone nearby, and the current Garmin Connect app installed. Garmin’s Venu 3 series Owner’s Manual (version 8, December 2025) treats phone pairing and software updates as core setup tasks. Wi-Fi, music, Garmin Pay, safety features, and a user profile are optional additions that you can configure during or after the initial setup.

Menu names can change with watch firmware and Garmin Connect releases. If a label below is not identical to what you see, look for the same function under the device settings rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
Pair the Venu 3 and install updates first
Use Garmin Connect for the initial pairing
- Turn on the Venu 3 and follow its on-screen startup prompts.
- Install or open Garmin Connect on your phone and sign in.
- In Garmin Connect, choose the option to add a device, then select the Venu 3 when it appears.
- Accept the pairing code shown on both the phone and watch, and allow the requested phone permissions.
- Complete the profile prompts, including information Garmin uses to personalize activity and health estimates.
Keep the phone close until Garmin Connect reports that synchronization is complete. Pairing through the app, rather than trying to use the phone’s general Bluetooth menu alone, lets Garmin Connect finish account registration and device configuration.

Check for watch software updates
After pairing, open the Venu 3 device page in Garmin Connect and check for software updates. The Venu 3 manual says, “For the best experience, you should keep the software on your watch up to date.” Install an offered update before tuning sleep, stress, or workout settings; an update can change menu wording or add compatibility for a feature.
Leave the watch on its charger if the update requires a higher battery level, keep the phone connected to the internet, and do not restart either device while an installation is in progress. Synchronize again after the watch reboots so the phone has the same settings and firmware state.
Finish optional setup without delaying health tracking
Garmin’s setup guidance also points to Wi-Fi, music, Garmin Pay, safety features, and the user profile. These are useful but not prerequisites for sleep, stress, or ordinary activity recording. Configure them later if you want to get the core tracking working immediately.

Configure sleep tracking before your first night
Set an accurate sleep and wake schedule
In Garmin Connect, open the Venu 3’s device settings and find the sleep schedule. Garmin documents more than one path depending on the device and software version:
- System > Sleep Mode > Schedule
- User Profile > Sleep Schedule
Enter the times you normally intend to sleep and wake. Use the schedule that reflects your real routine rather than an aspirational bedtime. If the app offers separate days or schedules, set them for shifts, weekends, or other regular changes. Check the current app wording because Garmin Connect paths vary by device and software release.

Keep wrist heart rate enabled
Sleep tracking depends on the Venu 3’s optical heart-rate sensor. Confirm that wrist heart rate is enabled and that you have not selected a setting that disables it overnight. The watch needs a reasonably secure fit: snug enough for the sensor to maintain contact, but not so tight that it is uncomfortable or leaves excessive pressure marks.
Wear the watch long enough before bed
Garmin recommends wearing the device for at least two hours before going to bed. Put it on before that window, keep it on through the night, and wear it on the wrist selected in your device settings. Charging immediately before bed can help avoid an overnight gap, but do not remove the watch during the period you want measured.

If you use multiple Garmin wearables, designate the device you will wear to bed as the Primary Wearable for sleep. A different watch may record activity during the day, but the primary device is the one Garmin uses for the main overnight record. Without a clear primary device, sleep data can be split between wearables or appear on an unexpected device.
Use the Venu 3’s sleep features
Garmin lists the Venu 3 as supporting Sleep Score and Insights and Sleep Coach. After a night with the watch worn correctly, open Garmin Connect and select the sleep card to see the recorded duration, score, stages, and available coaching information. The watch can also show sleep-related information through its health glances, depending on your current widget layout.
What manual sleep entries can and cannot do
Garmin Connect lets you add or edit a sleep period when the automatic record is missing or the times are wrong. A manual entry records the duration you provide; it does not recreate the optical-sensor measurements that would have been collected while wearing the watch. Consequently, manually adding sleep does not generate the underlying sleep measurements or a new Sleep Score for that period.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTurn on and read stress tracking
Add the Stress glance to the watch
- From the watch face, open the glance or widget list.
- Scroll to Stress. If it is not present, use the glance-management option to add it.
- Open the glance to see the current stress estimate and its recent timeline, when available.
Garmin Connect provides the longer daily view and trend history after the watch synchronizes. If the Stress glance is present but blank, first confirm wrist heart rate is enabled and the watch is making skin contact.
Understand the 0–100 stress estimate
Garmin describes Stress as an estimate based on heart-rate variability (HRV). In general, less beat-to-beat variability corresponds to a higher estimated stress level, while greater variability corresponds to a lower estimate. It is not a clinical diagnosis and does not identify a specific emotion or cause.
| Garmin stress value | Garmin’s band | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 0–25 | Resting | Typically appears during a calm, inactive period. |
| 26–50 | Low | Indicates a lower estimated stress state for that reading. |
| 51–75 | Medium | Shows a moderate estimated stress level; review the surrounding time and activity. |
| 76–100 | High | Shows a high estimated stress level for that interval, not a diagnosis. |
Look for patterns across comparable situations instead of reacting to one number. A high value after poor sleep, travel, illness, caffeine, or an intense day may have a different context from a high value while sitting quietly. The watch reports the estimate it can calculate from its sensor signal; it does not tell you why the value changed.
Know when stress is not recorded
Garmin states that high-activity periods, including workouts, are marked unmeasurable for stress. Garmin’s wording is direct: “During periods of high activity (such as during a workout), a stress level will not be recorded.” A blank interval during a run or strength session is therefore expected rather than evidence that the watch stopped working.

Record a workout on the Venu 3
Start an activity from the watch
- Open the activity list from the watch face.
- Select the activity that best matches what you are about to do, such as Run, Walk, Bike, or a strength activity.
- Review the activity screen and wait for any required sensors or positioning to become ready.
- Press the start control to begin recording.
- Press pause when you take a break, and stop and save the activity when you finish.
Choose the closest available profile before starting. The profile determines which screens and measurements are shown and gives Garmin Connect the correct context for the saved record. You can edit the activity later in Garmin Connect, but selecting the right profile at the start reduces cleanup.
Let the watch activate GPS when required
For activities that need location data, the Venu 3 manual states that GPS turns on automatically after you start an activity that requires it. Keep the watch in an open area for the initial position fix when practical. A GPS-dependent activity can still record time and heart-rate information if positioning takes longer, but the route or distance data may be incomplete until GPS is ready.
Use an external sensor only when it helps your setup
An external wireless sensor, such as a heart-rate monitor, is optional for recording a workout. It is not required for ordinary activity recording because the Venu 3 can use its wrist sensor. If you do use one, pair it before the workout:
- Open the Venu 3’s sensors and accessories settings.
- Put the wireless sensor into pairing mode according to its instructions.
- Select the sensor when it appears and wait for the watch to confirm the connection.
- Start the activity only after the sensor shows as connected.
If the sensor is not paired first, the activity may start with wrist data only. Verify the sensor’s battery, contact, and pairing status rather than assuming that every saved workout contains external-sensor data.
Build a useful Health Status baseline
Garmin’s Health Status feature uses overnight measurements to establish your typical ranges for heart rate, HRV, respiration, skin temperature, and Pulse Ox. Garmin says this process can take about three to four weeks of sleep-worn measurements. Treat the early period as baseline collection, not a definitive personal normal.
Best Value
- Physical size - 45 x 45 x 12 mm - Fits wrists with a circumference of 135-200 mm
Meet the measurement requirements
- Keep wrist heart rate enabled.
- Wear the Venu 3 during sleep consistently.
- Enable Pulse Ox during sleep or all day if you want Pulse Ox data to appear in Health Status.
- Synchronize with Garmin Connect regularly so overnight records reach the app.
Missing nights, loose sensor contact, or disabled Pulse Ox can leave some ranges incomplete. A short run of readings is not enough to establish a stable typical range; allow the stated three-to-four-week period when possible.
Use Health Status as a trend tool, not a medical test
Garmin explicitly says Health Status is not intended for medical purposes and is not intended to diagnose, cure, or prevent any disease or condition. A change in a watch estimate should not be used on its own to make a medical decision. If you feel unwell or are concerned about symptoms, use appropriate clinical care rather than trying to interpret a watch trend as a diagnosis.
Configure and interpret nap tracking
Compatible Garmin watches can automatically detect naps after a period of inactivity or let you start a nap manually. On the Venu 3, a recorded nap can affect Sleep Coach recommendations and may change Stress and Body Battery metrics.
- A nap shorter than one minute is not recorded.
- A nap longer than three hours can overwrite that day’s sleep details.
For a planned nap, use the watch’s nap function when available so the start and end are explicit. For an unplanned nap, allow the watch to detect the inactivity and synchronize afterward. Check the day’s sleep card if a long nap changes the displayed sleep details.
Troubleshoot missing or misleading records
No sleep record appears
- Confirm you wore the Venu 3 for at least two hours before bed and throughout the night.
- Check that wrist heart rate is enabled.
- Verify the correct sleep and wake times in Garmin Connect.
- If you own multiple Garmin wearables, make sure the device worn to bed is the Primary Wearable.
- Synchronize Garmin Connect after waking and inspect the device’s battery and sensor contact.
Adding a sleep duration manually can document the night, but it cannot restore the sensor-derived measurements or Sleep Score that were missed.
The Stress glance shows gaps
- Expect unmeasurable intervals during workouts and other high activity.
- Check wrist heart-rate tracking and how securely the watch is fitted.
- Sync the watch to Garmin Connect to load the complete daily timeline.
- Interpret isolated readings cautiously; look for repeated patterns during similar inactive periods.
A workout has no route or incomplete distance
- Confirm you selected an activity that uses GPS.
- Start the activity and give GPS time to acquire a position in an open area.
- Check whether an external sensor was actually paired before starting if you expected sensor data.
- Install pending watch software updates and synchronize again.
Health Status has too little information
Continue wearing the watch overnight and leave the required sensors enabled. Garmin’s typical ranges need about three to four weeks of sleep measurements, so a newly configured watch may not show a mature baseline immediately. Pulse Ox values require Pulse Ox to be enabled during sleep or all day.
A practical first-week setup checklist
- Pair the Venu 3 through Garmin Connect.
- Install available watch updates and synchronize after installation.
- Complete your user profile and optional Wi-Fi or safety setup if needed.
- Confirm wrist heart rate is active.
- Enter your normal sleep and wake schedule in Garmin Connect.
- Add the Stress glance to the watch.
- Choose the Venu 3 as Primary Wearable if you use more than one Garmin device.
- Wear the watch for at least two hours before bed and through each night.
- Start every workout from the appropriate activity profile.
- Pair any optional wireless sensor before starting the activity.
- Synchronize daily while the watch builds sleep and Health Status trends.
What the Venu 3 can tell you after setup
Once the configuration is consistent, the Venu 3 can provide overnight sleep records, Sleep Score and Insights, Sleep Coach information, a 0–100 HRV-based stress estimate outside high-activity periods, GPS activity files when a relevant workout is started, and longer-term Health Status ranges after sufficient overnight data. The quality of those trends depends primarily on regular wear, active sensors, correct schedules, and allowing the baseline period to accumulate.
