The Garmin Approach S72 can show emails, texts, and other alerts from a paired iPhone or Android phone. Its sleep, health, and activity power controls offer useful settings too—but exact notification and general battery menu paths are not established in the available S72 documentation. This guide separates confirmed S72 controls from settings you should verify on your watch rather than guessing at a menu path.
Set up notifications on the Approach S72
Garmin lists smart notifications for the S72 when it is paired with an iPhone or Android smartphone. The watch can receive emails, text messages, and alerts. Garmin’s regional product page confirms the feature, but the current manual material available here does not establish the precise S72 pairing or notification-selection steps.

Pair the watch with your phone using Garmin’s current S72 instructions, then check notification permissions on both the phone and in Garmin Connect. Phone operating-system permissions can determine which app alerts are available to Garmin Connect, so changing a watch setting alone may not enable every alert. Menu labels and behavior can differ between iPhone and Android; follow the instructions for your phone and S72 rather than another Garmin model.

Configure health tracking
From the watch face, Garmin’s Approach S72 manual places key health controls at Settings > Health & Wellness. The section includes wrist heart rate, Pulse Oximeter mode, and Move IQ. The manual’s Health & Wellness instructions describe these controls.
Wrist heart rate, Pulse Ox, and Move IQ
- Wrist heart rate: The S72 includes a wrist heart-rate control in Health & Wellness. Use the watch’s setting to manage the feature; the manual excerpt does not establish additional setup steps here.
- Pulse Oximeter: The S72 has a Pulse Oximeter mode. Pulse Ox measurement can use additional battery power, so consider whether you need it enabled and verify the available modes on your watch.
- Move IQ: Move IQ can recognize familiar activity patterns and add the activity type and duration to your timeline. These events are not saved as recorded activities. If you want a detailed activity record, start and save a timed activity instead.
Set sleep hours and review sleep data
Set your usual sleep schedule in Garmin Connect or in the watch settings. The S72 automatically detects sleep during the configured normal sleep hours and records duration, stages, movement, and a sleep score; Garmin Connect provides detailed statistics. See the S72 sleep-tracking documentation. Automatic sleep estimates are different from manually recording a timed activity.

Understand Body Battery
Body Battery is an estimate of reserve energy, not a direct measurement of how energetic you feel. Garmin combines heart-rate variability (HRV), stress, sleep quality, and activity data to produce a value from 5 to 100. The S72 manual groups the scale as follows:
| Body Battery value | Garmin description |
|---|---|
| 5–25 | Very low reserve |
| 26–50 | Low reserve |
| 51–75 | Medium reserve |
| 76–100 | High reserve |
Good sleep can raise the estimate, while strenuous activity and high stress can lower it. Wearing the watch while sleeping helps Garmin collect data for a more accurate result. Sync with Garmin Connect to see current levels, longer-term trends, and more detail. The S72 Body Battery documentation explains the estimate and its inputs.

Use the S72’s documented activity power settings
The S72 manual documents Power Mode and Power Save Timeout in activity settings. These are activity-specific controls, not a universal everyday battery-saving switch. The activity settings documentation describes the available tradeoffs.
Choose an activity power-save timeout
| Timeout setting | What the S72 does | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Switches to low-power watch mode after 5 minutes of inactivity | Returns to low-power mode sooner |
| Extended | Switches to low-power watch mode after 25 minutes of inactivity | Can reduce time between charges |
Choose the timeout that fits how long you need the activity display to remain available when you are not interacting with the watch. The longer timeout keeps the activity mode active longer, while Garmin says it can shorten battery life between charges.

- New round watch design with a high-resolution sunlight-readable display
- Battery life: up to 30 hours in GPS Mode
- More than 42,000 courses preloaded from around the world
- Keep score right on the watch and upload directly to the Garmin Golf app (when paired with a compatible smartphone) to participate in weekly leaderboards
- Automatically keep track of your score and how far you hit with each club with compatible Approach CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately)
Record expedition track points less often
For an expedition activity, recording track points less frequently maximizes battery life. The tradeoff is less frequent track detail. This is a specialized activity setting, not a recommendation to change ordinary golf or daily tracking.

Garmin’s general battery guidance identifies display brightness, vibration, wireless connections, GPS, music, and All-Day or sleep Pulse Ox as possible battery drains. The guidance is associated with the Approach S62 and broader Garmin watches, so treat it as a checklist of factors to investigate—not as confirmation that every control or menu path applies to the S72. Garmin advises checking the device manual for compatibility and setting locations. See Garmin’s battery-drain guidance.
Best Value
- Slim design with a stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display that brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Pair with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers (sold separately) for shot-tracking capabilities, so you have a clearer picture of which parts of your game to focus on
- Easily keep score as you play, and upload to the Garmin Golf smartphone app for advanced stat tracking and handicap calculation

- Display: If the S72 offers a brightness control, reducing brightness may lower display power use. Confirm the control and available levels in the S72 manual.
- Vibration: Vibration can use battery. If you reduce it, consider whether you still need haptic alerts for notifications or activity prompts.
- Wireless links: Bluetooth and other wireless connections can affect battery use. Review connected devices and features you do not need, but keep links enabled when you rely on phone notifications or sensors.
- GPS and music: GPS use and music playback are among Garmin’s general battery factors. Adjust them only in the relevant S72 activity or feature settings, where available; reducing tracking detail or playback can affect what the watch records or plays.
- Pulse Ox: All-Day or sleep Pulse Ox can increase battery use according to Garmin’s broader guidance. Check which measurement options the S72 offers and balance battery life against the health data you want.
Do not assume the Approach S70’s Always On display behavior or defaults apply to the S72. Garmin’s cited Always On information concerns the S70 series, not this model.
