For most handheld PCs, use Cyberpunk 2077’s built-in path: open Settings → Graphics, select AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 in the resolution-scaling controls, then turn on the separate FSR Frame Generation option. The frame-generation switch remains unavailable unless FSR 3 upscaling is enabled. CD PROJEKT RED recommends a stable pre-generation result of at least 60 FPS and a display refresh rate of 120 Hz or higher, but those are recommendations rather than a guarantee that every handheld can reach them.
Which frame-generation method should you use?
The correct method depends on the handheld’s graphics hardware and operating system. Cyberpunk 2077 has an in-game FSR 3 route, while AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is a separate driver-level feature for supported Windows systems. NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation is another separate route limited to specific GeForce RTX generations. These options should not be treated as interchangeable toggles.

If you are unsure which route applies, start with the in-game FSR 3 procedure. It is the documented Cyberpunk 2077 control and does not require you to configure a separate driver feature.
Before changing settings
Confirm the game version
FSR 3 with Frame Generation was added to the PC version in Patch 2.13, released on September 12, 2024. Update the game before troubleshooting a missing FSR 3 or Frame Generation option. Later patches may alter menus or supported hardware, so install the current game update offered by your platform.

Identify the handheld and operating system
Record the exact GPU family and whether the device is running Windows or SteamOS. A Windows handheld with an eligible Radeon or Ryzen graphics processor can potentially use AFMF if every AMD requirement is met. AMD’s published AFMF requirements are for Windows 10 and Windows 11; the official material does not provide a universal SteamOS procedure. Do not assume that Windows Adrenalin steps transfer to SteamOS.
Check display mode and refresh rate
CD PROJEKT RED advises using a display with a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz for Frame Generation. Many handheld panels run at lower refresh rates, and some devices allow the refresh rate to be changed in the operating system. A 120 Hz recommendation does not guarantee smooth output; it is a display-side condition suggested by the developer.
Update drivers and Windows graphics scheduling
CD PROJEKT RED’s FSR 3 support guidance calls out Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) and AMD, NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers. Enable HAGS where your Windows installation exposes the setting and use current drivers from the relevant GPU vendor. The driver versions listed in the support article are tied to that guidance and should not be presented as the latest versions in 2026.
Set up the built-in FSR 3 Frame Generation option
1. Establish a baseline without frame generation
Launch Cyberpunk 2077 and play the area or activity that normally stresses your handheld. Leave Frame Generation off while you adjust resolution and graphics quality. The aim is a reasonably stable baseline near the developer’s recommended minimum of 60 FPS before generated frames are added.

This is not a universal handheld preset. A setting that reaches the target on one device may not do so on another because of GPU power limits, cooling, memory configuration, resolution, ray-tracing choices and the selected game scene. Reduce output resolution or demanding graphics options until frame delivery is stable enough to evaluate.
- Measure the game with Frame Generation disabled.
- Use the same resolution and graphics settings when comparing the result after enabling it.
- Pay attention to consistency, not only the highest number shown by an overlay.
- If the baseline remains well below the recommended level, treat Frame Generation as a poor fit for that configuration rather than a cure for the underlying performance limit.
2. Enable FSR 3 upscaling
- Open Cyberpunk 2077.
- Open Settings.
- Select Graphics.
- Find the resolution-scaling or upscaling controls.
- Select AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.
- Apply the setting if the game asks you to confirm changes.
FSR 3 upscaling is a dependency, not merely an optional companion. CD PROJEKT RED states that FSR Frame Generation can only be used when AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 upscaling is enabled.
3. Turn on the separate Frame Generation control
- Remain in Settings → Graphics.
- Locate the separate FSR Frame Generation control.
- Enable it.
- Apply the change and return to the game.
Do not confuse the upscaler selector with the Frame Generation switch. Selecting FSR 3 without enabling the separate control changes resolution scaling but does not activate generated frames. Conversely, the Frame Generation control cannot be used while FSR 3 upscaling is disabled.

4. Check the result in motion
Walk, drive and turn the camera through a repeatable scene. Look for changes in motion clarity, frame pacing and visible artifacts rather than relying only on an FPS counter. CD PROJEKT RED warns that artifacts can become more prominent and frame pacing can suffer when the pre-generation frame rate is low.

If the game feels less consistent after enabling the feature, turn it off and raise the baseline first. Frame Generation is intended to build on an adequately fast render rate; it does not replace the work performed by the game’s regular rendering pipeline.
How to use AMD Fluid Motion Frames on a Windows handheld
AFMF is not Cyberpunk 2077’s FSR 3 setting. It is a driver-level AMD feature configured in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Use it only when the handheld meets AMD’s stated requirements.
Verify the requirements
- The handheld must use eligible Radeon or Ryzen graphics hardware supported by AFMF.
- The operating system must be Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition must be version 25.3.1 or later.
- VSync must be disabled in the AMD driver and in Cyberpunk 2077.
These conditions are separate from the in-game FSR 3 dependency. A device can have an FSR 3 menu option in the game and still fail AFMF’s hardware, Windows or driver requirements.
Configure AFMF globally
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Go to Gaming → Graphics.
- Find the Fluid Motion Frames control and enable it according to AMD’s current interface.
- Confirm that VSync is disabled in the driver.
- Open Cyberpunk 2077 and disable VSync in the game’s graphics settings.
- Test the game with a stable baseline and observe frame pacing and artifacts.
Configure AFMF for Cyberpunk 2077 only
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Go to Gaming → Games.
- Select Cyberpunk 2077, or add its executable if it is not listed.
- Enable the AFMF control in that game profile.
- Disable VSync in both the profile or global driver settings and the game.
- Launch the game and evaluate the same repeatable scene used for the baseline test.
AMD’s Windows requirements do not establish a SteamOS procedure. If the handheld runs SteamOS, do not copy these Adrenalin instructions into a compatibility guide and assume they will work. Use the game’s documented FSR 3 controls unless you have separate, verified support information for the specific operating-system and driver stack.

NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation: when it applies
DLSS Frame Generation is relevant only to a handheld equipped with supported GeForce RTX graphics. Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 2.21, dated January 23, 2025, identifies single Frame Generation support for RTX 40 and RTX 50 GPUs. It identifies Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series hardware.
This is a hardware-specific path, not an alternative switch for every handheld. Integrated Radeon graphics, integrated Intel graphics and handhelds without a supported RTX GPU cannot use the RTX-specific option simply because the game includes it. On a qualifying device, use the NVIDIA-related controls exposed by the current game version and driver, while keeping the same baseline and motion checks described for FSR 3.

The 60 FPS recommendation is a starting condition
CD PROJEKT RED’s explicit guidance is to run the game at a baseline minimum of 60 FPS before enabling Frame Generation “for it to work properly.” This is a developer recommendation, not a benchmark proving that every handheld will reach or maintain 60 FPS. Check the baseline in the actual game scene you care about, because a menu or quiet interior can produce a very different result from driving through a dense city area.

Generated frames do not remove the original workload
Frame Generation adds displayed frames between conventionally rendered frames, but the handheld still has to render the underlying frames. If the original render rate is unstable, the displayed result can inherit uneven pacing or make artifacts easier to notice. Lowering resolution or demanding quality settings can be more effective than enabling generation immediately.
Refresh rate and frame caps
The developer’s 120 Hz-or-higher advice concerns the display. It is not a promise that a 120 Hz panel will make a low-baseline configuration smooth. Match the game and handheld’s frame-pacing controls to what the panel can display, and judge the result by consistent motion. If the panel cannot operate at 120 Hz, you can still test the feature, but you should treat the result as outside the developer’s stated display recommendation.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Frame Generation option is missing or unavailable
- Confirm that the PC game is updated to a version that includes Patch 2.13 or later.
- Return to Settings → Graphics and select AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.
- Verify that you are looking for the separate Frame Generation control, not only the upscaler selector.
- Restart the game after applying graphics changes if the control does not refresh.
- Check current GPU drivers and Windows graphics settings where applicable.
AFMF will not enable
- Confirm Windows 10 or Windows 11 is installed.
- Check that the GPU or Ryzen processor is on AMD’s supported hardware list.
- Verify Adrenalin 25.3.1 or later.
- Disable VSync in both AMD Software and Cyberpunk 2077.
- Remember that AFMF is not the in-game FSR 3 feature and cannot be assumed to work on SteamOS.
The game feels uneven after enabling generation
- Recheck the non-generated baseline; CD PROJEKT RED warns about artifacts and frame-pacing problems at lower baseline rates.
- Lower resolution or demanding graphics options until the baseline is more stable.
- Test with Frame Generation off, then on, in the same scene.
- Check the handheld’s refresh-rate setting and compare it with the developer’s 120 Hz recommendation.
- Use the route appropriate to the hardware instead of stacking multiple frame-generation systems without documented support.
Artifacts are more visible than expected
Artifacts are a known trade-off, particularly when the baseline frame rate is low or motion is complex. Compare fast camera pans, driving sequences and moving characters. If the artifacts distract more than the added smoothness helps, disable Frame Generation or improve the baseline rather than assuming a different toggle will solve it.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the OS: Windows or SteamOS.
- Identify the GPU family: Radeon/Ryzen, GeForce RTX, or another graphics solution.
- Update the game: FSR 3 requires the PC feature introduced in Patch 2.13.
- Measure without generation: aim for a stable baseline near 60 FPS.
- Use the in-game route first: select FSR 3, then enable FSR Frame Generation.
- Use AFMF only on supported Windows hardware: meet AMD’s OS, driver and VSync requirements.
- Use DLSS Frame Generation only on the RTX generations named by the patch notes.
- Evaluate motion and pacing: check artifacts and consistency, not only the counter.
- Keep expectations qualified: the 60 FPS and 120 Hz figures are developer recommendations, not handheld performance guarantees.
What this means for SteamOS handhelds
The documented game-level FSR 3 controls are the clearest starting point for a SteamOS device, but the available official materials do not establish a universal SteamOS frame-generation procedure. AMD’s AFMF requirements specifically name Windows 10 and Windows 11, so a Windows-only Adrenalin workflow should not be presented as a SteamOS solution. Compatibility can depend on the handheld’s graphics stack, game compatibility layer and driver implementation; verify those details for the exact model before treating a driver-level method as supported.

Open Settings → Graphics in Cyberpunk 2077, enable AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3, and then enable FSR Frame Generation. Build a stable baseline first, with CD PROJEKT RED recommending at least 60 FPS and a 120 Hz-or-higher display. AFMF is a different Windows-and-driver feature with AMD hardware and VSync requirements, while DLSS Frame Generation is limited to supported RTX generations. Your handheld model, GPU and operating system determine which of these routes is actually available.
