To play four-player split-screen in the current Star Fox release for Nintendo Switch 2, open Battle Mode, choose Local Battle, set the console to four players, pair one compatible controller for each player, choose pilots, and select a mission. The four-player option is a local battle feature—not four-player campaign co-op.
If Local Battle is missing, install the game’s free update first. Nintendo says an internet connection and a software update are required to download Local Split-Screen Battle Mode.

Pair the additional controllers
Follow the pairing prompt and have each player pair one controller. Complete the process for all four players. If a controller does not appear, see the troubleshooting section below rather than proceeding with fewer players and expecting the fourth view to appear automatically.

What four-player split screen actually offers
The four-player arrangement belongs to Battle Mode. Nintendo describes this mode as aerial combat with and against other players and CPU-controlled opponents. In practical terms, the four local participants are entering a battle rather than taking four separate roles in the story campaign.
The documented flow ends with pilot selection and a mission selection. Nintendo’s published setup information does not promise a particular screen division, camera arrangement, or television configuration, so treat the visual layout as a game-managed detail rather than something you can choose during setup.
Local Battle is not four-player campaign co-op
The game’s campaign co-op uses a different arrangement: two players share one aircraft, with one player handling the pilot role and the other handling the gunner role. That is cooperative campaign play, not four independent split-screen views.
If your goal is to play the story with a friend, use the campaign co-op route instead. If four people each need their own view and controller on one console, remain in Battle Mode → Local Battle. Selecting the campaign option will not turn it into a four-player split-screen campaign.

How the available multiplayer arrangements differ
| Arrangement | Where it is selected | Players and hardware | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local split-screen battle | Battle Mode → Local Battle | Up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2; one controller per player | Competitive aerial battles on a single console |
| Campaign co-op | Campaign’s co-op setup | Two players sharing pilot and gunner roles | Cooperative story play in one aircraft |
| Online team battle | Online multiplayer route | Nintendo describes four-on-four team battles; separate internet, account, and Nintendo Switch Online requirements apply | Team matches across connected consoles |
| Local GameShare | GameShare feature | A separate local arrangement from one-console split screen; the cited setup information does not define its exact player flow here | Sharing play across compatible consoles rather than using the Local Battle menu above |
The table matters because the game contains several multiplayer labels that sound interchangeable. Only Local Battle under Battle Mode is the documented path for four players sharing one console in split screen.
Update requirements and what to do if Local Battle is missing
Nintendo’s product information states: “Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is available in a free update. Internet connection and software update required to download.” That means a newly installed or unupdated copy may not show the option immediately.
- Connect the Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet.
- Start the system’s software-update process for Star Fox, allowing the free game update to download and install.
- Launch the game again after the update finishes.
- Return to Battle Mode and look for Local Battle.
If the menu still does not match these labels, verify the game’s identity first. An older Nintendo 64 or Nintendo 3DS release will not necessarily receive the same feature or use the same menu path. Also confirm that the update completed rather than merely beginning a download.

Four-player setup requires four controllers that the console accepts. The game-specific instructions say to pair a controller for each player but do not list a preferred model, controller type, or accessory bundle.
Before opening Local Battle
- Count the controllers that are charged or connected.
- Make sure every player has a separate controller rather than sharing one.
- Keep the controllers near the console while the pairing prompt is open.
- If you are borrowing hardware, confirm Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility before the session starts.
During pairing
Pair players one at a time when prompted. Wait for the game to register each participant before moving to the next controller. If the game registers fewer than four players, do not assume the missing player will be added after the mission starts; return to the pairing stage and resolve the controller connection first.
Because Nintendo does not identify specific controller models in the cited instructions, avoid treating a controller as guaranteed to work solely because it works with another Nintendo system. Compatibility can vary by console, accessory, and region.

A reliable first-session checklist
- Confirm the title is the Nintendo Switch 2 release, not Star Fox 64 or Star Fox 64 3D.
- Install the free update that adds Local Split-Screen Battle Mode.
- Place the console where all four players can see the display.
- Have four compatible controllers ready.
- Open the game from the HOME Menu.
- Press A at the title screen.
- Choose Battle Mode.
- Choose Local Battle.
- Set the console’s player count to four and press A.
- Pair each player’s controller.
- Choose pilots.
- Select a mission and begin the battle.
Troubleshooting by symptom
You cannot find Local Battle
Check the update before changing any controller settings. Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is delivered through a free update, and Nintendo identifies internet access and a software update as prerequisites for downloading it. After installation, restart the game and revisit Battle Mode.

The game shows fewer than four players
Return to the player-count step and make sure the number of players using this console is set to four. Then pair the remaining controllers when prompted. Selecting four players and pairing only two controllers does not create two additional participants.
A controller will not join
Check that the controller is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2, has power, and is available for pairing. Keep the controller close to the console, follow the on-screen pairing prompt, and wait for confirmation before starting another pairing attempt. If necessary, leave the local setup and enter it again so the game can repeat the pairing sequence.
You selected campaign co-op by mistake
Exit that setup and return to the main menu. Choose Battle Mode, then Local Battle. Campaign co-op is designed for two players sharing pilot and gunner duties; it is not the four-player split-screen mode.
You are expecting online play on the same screen
Local split screen and online four-on-four battles are separate arrangements. For four people physically sharing one Nintendo Switch 2, use Local Battle. Online play follows a different route and has its own Nintendo Switch Online, account, and internet requirements.

Nintendo’s setup information confirms local split-screen availability but does not specify the exact visual division or television layout. Questions to settle before buying extra hardware
Do I need four identical controllers?
The instructions require one compatible controller per local player, not four identical units. They do not, however, publish a definitive list of supported models in the setup information. Verify each controller’s compatibility with Nintendo Switch 2 before purchasing or borrowing it.
Does every player need a separate Nintendo account?
The local setup instructions describe controller pairing and player selection but do not state an account requirement for Local Battle. Do not apply the account requirements documented for online features to the one-console mode unless the game or console displays an additional prompt.
Do I need internet every time I play locally?
Internet is identified as necessary to download the free update. Once the update is installed, the cited local setup instructions do not state that an ongoing internet connection is required for a one-console Local Battle session. Online features are a separate case with their own connection requirements.
Can four players cooperate through the campaign?
Not according to the documented mode descriptions. Campaign co-op is a two-player pilot-and-gunner arrangement. The four-player local option is Battle Mode, where players fight in aerial combat with other players and CPU-controlled opponents.
Choosing the right mode for your group
- Four people, one console, competitive match: choose Battle Mode → Local Battle, set four players, and pair four controllers.
- Two people, shared story mission: use campaign co-op and divide the pilot and gunner roles.
- Teams across separate consoles: investigate the online four-on-four route and satisfy its Nintendo Switch Online, account, and internet requirements.
- Several nearby consoles using GameShare: use the GameShare feature’s own instructions rather than the one-console Local Battle flow.
Bottom line for a four-player session
The essential path is Battle Mode → Local Battle → four players → pair each controller → choose pilots → select a mission. Install the free update first if that menu is unavailable, and verify that you own the Nintendo Switch 2 release rather than an older Star Fox title. The result is four-player local split-screen battle, not a four-player campaign.
