How to set up fingerprint access on a smart lock and add household users

There is no universal button sequence for fingerprint smart locks. First identify the exact lock and fingerprint-reader model, then use that model’s current app or manual. The enrollee may need to be standing at the lock, and a household member should be created as a separate user whenever the system supports individual credentials.

The practical setup differs between a lock with a built-in fingerprint reader, such as the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, and a compatible lock that uses a separate reader, such as the Yale Smart Keypad 2. The steps below show how to tell which workflow applies, enrol a print, invite another resident, remove access later, and recover from common setup failures.

Identify the hardware before pressing any buttons

Fingerprint enrollment is model-specific. A programming sequence that works on one lock can fail on another, even when both use the same brand app. Schlage’s official programming index, for example, separates instructions by individual smart-lock model rather than publishing one procedure for every product. Treat the model number as a required prerequisite, not a detail to check after setup fails.

Built-in fingerprint reader

On a lock with an integrated scanner, the biometric reader is part of the exterior lock. The Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch is an example. Its owner manages fingerprint users through the Yale Access app’s guest workflow, while the person being enrolled must be present at the lock. You do not pair a second keypad or create a separate keypad device in this arrangement.

Yale WiFi Smart Lock Deadbolt, Keypad & Fingerprint Access, Keyless Entry
  • YOUR FINGER IS THE KEY: No codes to remember. No phone to dig out. Just touch and you're in—faster than finding your keys ever was. This keyless entry door lock also offers Auto-Unlock, full smartphone control, a backlit keypad, and a backup key.
  • CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: This electronic door lock puts home security in your pocket, connecting directly to 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi without a hub or bridge. Lock up, let someone in, and get real-time alerts with the Yale Access app (US & Canada Only).
  • UNLIMITED CODES, COMPLETE CONTROL: No more hiding spare keys. Give the dog walker Tuesday access, your parents a permanent code, and your Airbnb guest entry that expires at checkout. Share, schedule, or revoke access in seconds.
  • WONDERING IF YOU LOCKED UP? DoorSense knows when your door is fully closed and Auto-Lock secures it for you. Head to bed, rush out the door, or chase after the kids — your smart front door lock handles the details so you don't have to worry.
  • ENGINEERED FOR RELIABILITY: Grade 2 certified by BHMA, the industry standard for commercial-grade durability. Built to perform from -22°F winters to 140°F summer heat. Low-power alerts let you know when batteries are about to run out.

Separate fingerprint keypad

A separate reader has its own power, pairing, setup and access-management process. Yale Smart Keypad 2 must be powered, added in Yale Home, linked to a compatible Yale lock and then configured for users. The keypad can be mounted with its supplied adhesive pad or screws. A reader that looks compatible is not automatically compatible, so confirm the exact lock and keypad combination in the manufacturer’s current documentation.

Record these details

  • Exact lock model and generation.
  • Exact fingerprint reader or keypad model, if it is separate.
  • App name and the home or property to which the lock is attached.
  • Whether the person needs only a fingerprint or also phone, app and entry-code access.

Keep the lock’s manual or official support page open while you work. Do not combine a programming-button sequence from one model with app instructions written for another.

Prepare the lock and the people who will use it

Completing these checks before enrollment prevents most avoidable dead ends.

  1. Confirm compatibility. A separate keypad must be approved for the lock model and supported by the same account ecosystem. If compatibility is not stated, stop and verify it rather than attempting to pair by trial and error.
  2. Install and sign in to the correct app. Use the manufacturer’s current app and select the correct home or property. An account connected to a different property can make a correctly paired device appear to be missing.
  3. Wake and power the hardware. For a keypad, install or activate its batteries as directed. For a built-in reader, make sure the lock has usable battery power and that its exterior controls respond.
  4. Bring the enrollee to the lock when required. Yale explicitly requires the person whose print is being added to be present for Assure Lock 2 Touch enrollment. A remote invitation alone is not enough for that workflow.
  5. Decide the credential type first. Choose a fingerprint-only user when the person should unlock at the door but not use the app. Choose app access when the person also needs phone control, an entry code or fingerprint access through the account.
  6. Have a fallback credential available. Keep the owner’s existing app, code or physical key option available while testing a new print. Do not remove the only working owner credential before the new one has been verified.

Enroll a fingerprint on the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch

The Assure Lock 2 Touch has two relevant user categories in Yale’s documentation. Fingerprint Only is intended for unlocking by fingerprint without in-app access. App Access can be configured to allow phone, entry-code or fingerprint access. The choice changes what the household member can do after enrollment, so select it deliberately.

  • CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: The included Wi-Fi Bridge manages the connection to your 2.4 or 5 GHz network so your lock doesn't have to—extending battery life and range. Lock, unlock, and get alerts with the Yale Access app (US & Canada Only).
  • UNLIMITED CODES, COMPLETE CONTROL: No more hiding spare keys. Give the dog walker Tuesday access, your parents a permanent code, and your Airbnb guest entry that expires at checkout. Schedule and share codes or revoke access in seconds.
  • WONDERING IF YOU LOCKED UP? DoorSense knows when your door is fully closed and Auto-Lock secures it for you. Head to bed, rush out the door, or chase after the kids—your smart front door lock handles the details so you don't have to worry.

Use the owner’s Yale Access account

  1. Stand at the lock with the person whose fingerprint will be registered. Keep the lock awake and the person’s finger clean and dry.
  2. Open the Yale Access app associated with the property and start the guest or user flow for the Assure Lock 2 Touch.
  3. Choose the user type: Fingerprint Only for door access without app privileges, or App Access for a user who may receive phone, code or fingerprint access.
  4. Follow the in-app prompts at the lock. The app may change wording or screen order over time, so use the prompts shown for your account rather than an older screenshot.
  5. Have the enrollee present the requested finger to the reader whenever the app asks. Complete every scan or confirmation step before leaving the enrollment screen.
  6. Finish the invitation or user setup, then lock and unlock the door with the newly enrolled finger while the owner remains able to use a fallback credential.

If the person needs only entry at the door, Fingerprint Only limits the account relationship to that purpose. If they will manage access from a phone or use an entry code as well, App Access is the appropriate category in Yale’s described workflow.

Check the result

  • Confirm that the user appears in the household or guest list.
  • Use the enrolled finger for a complete unlock test, not merely a reader-light or sound confirmation.
  • Test the owner’s normal credential after the new user is added.
  • Record who owns each credential so that a later removal targets the correct person.

Set up a Yale Smart Keypad 2 before adding fingerprints

The Smart Keypad 2 has its own onboarding sequence. A fingerprint can be registered during initial setup or added later through Access, but the keypad must first be powered and linked to the Yale lock.

Initial keypad pairing

  1. Unclip the keypad’s back panel.
  2. Remove the battery-isolating tab as shown in Yale’s setup guide.
  3. Wait for the front LEDs to blink, indicating that the keypad is ready for setup.
  4. Open Yale Home and use the control for adding a device.
  5. Scan the QR code on the keypad when the app requests it.
  6. Follow the prompts to install any offered firmware and connect the keypad to the compatible Yale lock.
  7. Choose whether to register a fingerprint during onboarding or finish setup and add fingerprints later under Access.
  8. Mount the keypad with the supplied adhesive pad or screws only after pairing and a basic unlock test succeed.

Mounting location affects whether a guest can comfortably reach the reader, but mounting does not replace the account pairing step. A physically installed keypad that has not been linked in Yale Home will not provide the expected user workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add the first print during onboarding

When setup offers fingerprint registration, keep the person at the keypad and follow the displayed scan prompts. Complete the registration before closing the onboarding flow. If you skip it, the same credential can be added later from Access; there is no need to reset a correctly paired keypad just to enrol another user.

Add another household member after setup

For a later addition, the owner starts from Access in Yale Home. Yale’s everyday-use instructions distinguish app-access guests from fingerprint-only guests, so the owner should choose the least-privileged option that meets the household member’s needs.

Owner-led enrollment on Smart Keypad 2

  1. Open Yale Home and select Access for the property and keypad.
  2. Invite a new guest or select an existing guest record.
  3. Open that person’s fingerprint option.
  4. Choose app access or fingerprint-only access according to the intended permissions.
  5. Keep the guest close enough to use the keypad and follow the in-app registration flow while the guest presents the finger as instructed.
  6. After completion, check the guest list for the fingerprint indicator.
  7. Test the enrolled finger at the keypad before the guest relies on it as the only entry method.

Only the owner can register a guest fingerprint on Smart Keypad 2. A household member who has app access but is not the owner should not be expected to enrol another person’s biometric credential.

One person, one registered finger on this keypad

Yale states that Smart Keypad 2 supports up to 10 fingerprints, with one fingerprint registered per user. That limit applies to the Smart Keypad 2 described on Yale Home’s support page, accessed October 13, 2026; it is not a universal capacity for fingerprint locks or other readers. If the keypad reaches its limit, remove an obsolete user through the owner’s Access settings before attempting another enrollment.

Remove a fingerprint or change a household member’s access

Access should be removed from the owner’s user-management screen rather than by deleting an app from the former user’s phone. Deleting the app does not necessarily delete a credential stored by the lock or keypad.

Yale Security Assure Lock 2 Touch Deadbolt, Satin Nickel Keyed Smart Entry Door Lock with Wi-Fi Connected Keypad and Fingerprint Scanner for Code Entry and Remote Access, YRD410-F-WF1-619
  • UNLOCK WITH YOUR FINGERPRINT: The one key that is completely unique to you, and can never be lost or duplicated. With a 99% accuracy and <0.5 recognition time, your fingerprint is the fastest and most secure way to unlock your home. Note: This product only works on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and in the U.S. and Canada.
  • NO LOCKSMITH NEEDED: The lock replaces your deadbolt on most standard US entry doors using just a screwdriver; no DIY experience required.
  • HANDS FULL? NO PROBLEM. A door that auto-unlocks as you approach - now that’s a warm welcome. With this hands-free option, you don’t need to touch your lock or your phone. Always let Yale get the door.
  • DON’T WORRY, IT'S LOCKED: Never worry again about remembering to lock the door with Auto-Lock.
  • SECURITY AT YOUR FINGERTIPS. The one key that can never be lost or duplicated — your fingerprint. Also, ensure only the right people have access with two-factor authentication, biometric verification, and matte keypads for fingerprint resistance.

Smart Keypad 2 removal

  1. In Yale Home, open the person’s Access settings.
  2. Open the Fingerprint tab.
  3. Use the delete or remove control for that registered print.
  4. Confirm the change, then test the reader with the removed finger if appropriate and with an active household credential.

Yale’s instructions state that only the owner can delete a registered Smart Keypad 2 fingerprint. If a person moves out, loses authorization or no longer needs biometric entry, remove the fingerprint and any separate app or code permission assigned to that person.

Assure Lock 2 Touch changes

Manage Assure Lock 2 Touch fingerprint users through the same official enrollment and guest pathway used to add them. Open the person’s user record, remove or change the credential offered by the current app flow, and verify that the former user no longer unlocks the door. The exact labels may change as the app is updated.

Troubleshoot enrollment failures without guessing

The app cannot find the reader

  • Recheck the exact lock and keypad model numbers.
  • Confirm that the keypad is awake, has active batteries and has completed its QR-code pairing flow.
  • Verify that Yale Home or the relevant manufacturer app is signed in to the property where the lock is installed.
  • Restart the model-specific setup flow rather than applying a programming sequence copied from another lock.

The fingerprint will not register

  • Make sure the required person is physically at the lock or keypad. Assure Lock 2 Touch enrollment specifically requires the enrollee’s presence.
  • Follow the scan prompts exactly and keep the finger in the position requested by the reader.
  • Check that the reader is awake and that the lock or keypad has adequate power.
  • Confirm that the user has not already reached a device-specific capacity limit. Smart Keypad 2 allows up to 10 total fingerprints and one per user.

The print enrolled but will not unlock

  1. Check the guest list or user record for the fingerprint indicator.
  2. Test the same finger again at the enrolled reader, not at a different keypad or lock.
  3. Use the owner’s app, code or other fallback credential to confirm that the lock itself is operating.
  4. If the credential is listed but still fails, repeat the official model-specific enrollment flow and then consult that model’s manual or support page.

A former user still appears to have access

Review both credential types. A fingerprint can be removed while a separate app invitation or entry code remains active, or vice versa. Delete every permission the person no longer needs, then perform a real unlock test with an active user. If the app does not expose the expected removal control, use the exact model’s support instructions rather than resetting the entire lock blindly.

Built-in reader or separate keypad: how to decide

Decision factor Built-in fingerprint lock Compatible separate keypad
Installation Reader is part of the lock hardware Requires powering, pairing and mounting another device
Setup path Lock-specific user enrollment in the manufacturer app Keypad onboarding first, then Access-based user enrollment
Physical presence May be required; Yale requires it for Assure Lock 2 Touch Guest must be close enough to use the keypad during registration
Capacity Depends on the exact lock; not stated universally Smart Keypad 2: up to 10 fingerprints, one per user
Best fit A new installation where the integrated reader is supported An existing compatible lock that needs fingerprint entry without replacing the lock

Do not treat this as a performance ranking. The available manufacturer instructions establish workflow, permissions and capacity for the named models, not a broad brand-to-brand accuracy or success-rate comparison.

Household practices that prevent access problems

  • Give every resident an individual user record instead of sharing one fingerprint or app login. Individual records make departures and permission changes manageable.
  • Use fingerprint-only access for people who need entry but should not control the lock remotely, when the model offers that distinction.
  • Reserve owner privileges for the person responsible for registering and deleting credentials.
  • After every enrollment or deletion, perform a physical unlock test and verify that an existing owner credential still works.
  • Keep the model number and current manual with the property records. A future battery change, app migration or replacement keypad may require the same information.
  • When moving a keypad, changing the lock or transferring the property, review both the lock’s user list and the app’s guest list; they are related but may contain different permissions.

What to do when the documented flow still fails

There is no manufacturer-neutral troubleshooting sequence that can safely cover every fingerprint lock. If the model, power, pairing, account and capacity checks above are correct but enrollment still fails, open the exact product’s current support page or manual and follow its escalation path. Include the lock model, keypad model if present, app name, visible error and the step at which registration stopped. Avoid factory-resetting a working lock until the official instructions explain how existing users, codes and paired devices will be restored.
