How to Set Up Ethernet Link Aggregation Between a PC and Router

To combine two or more Ethernet links between a PC and a router or switch, both ends must support the same link-aggregation method and be configured as one logical group. Use LACP (also called dynamic 802.3ad) when both devices support it; use static LAG only when that is the compatible option. Configure the router or switch and the PC before plugging in the additional cables, then connect only the designated ports.

Link aggregation can spread traffic across several physical links and keep the connection available if one member fails. It does not turn two ports into one faster physical interface, and a single download or file copy may remain limited to one member link. The exact PC procedure depends on your operating system, Ethernet adapter and driver, while router port numbers and menu names vary by model.

What Ethernet link aggregation does

Ethernet link aggregation groups multiple physical Ethernet connections into one logical interface, often called a LAG (link aggregation group). The router or switch and the PC treat the member ports as a coordinated connection rather than as unrelated network adapters.

When traffic is eligible for distribution, the devices select different member links for different traffic flows. This can increase total throughput when several clients, destinations or sessions are active. It also provides redundancy: if one cable, transceiver or port fails, the remaining member can continue carrying traffic, subject to the mode and the endpoint implementation.

Aggregation is not the same as installing a single interface with a higher line rate. MikroTik’s RouterOS documentation states: “Interface bonding does not create an interface with a larger link speed.” A two-link group therefore does not guarantee that one TCP connection will run at the sum of both link rates.

Check compatibility before changing anything

Confirm the router or switch feature

Open the support page or manual for the exact router or managed-switch model. Confirm all of the following:

  • Whether the device supports link aggregation at all.
  • Which physical LAN ports can participate. The ports may be a fixed pair, a numbered range or a selectable group.
  • How many member links are allowed and whether the ports must run at the same speed and duplex.
  • Whether the device supports LACP (dynamic IEEE 802.3ad), static LAG, or both.
  • Whether aggregation is available on LAN ports only; WAN and LAN ports are not interchangeable unless the model documentation explicitly says so.

Consumer-router interfaces frequently hide the feature unless the model has the required switch hardware and firmware. NETGEAR’s overview notes that port limits and supported modes are model-dependent. ASUS likewise instructs owners to verify aggregation support on the product’s model page rather than assuming that every router in a series has it.

Confirm PC hardware and software support

A second Ethernet socket does not prove that the PC can form a team. Check the exact adapter model, operating-system edition and driver or management utility. The adapter must expose a teaming or bonding function that matches the peer device.

Intel documentation distinguishes dynamic 802.3ad LACP from static aggregation and requires the switch to use the matching mode. Its supported-adapter and operating-system qualifications apply to particular hardware and driver combinations; they are not a guarantee for every Intel-based port or every Windows edition. A desktop with two unrelated adapters may need a supported dual-port adapter, vendor teaming software or an operating-system bonding facility.

On Linux, the kernel bonding driver provides an 802.3ad mode, but that mode requires a peer switch that supports dynamic IEEE 802.3ad aggregation. Distribution, network manager and driver details determine how the bond is created and made persistent, so follow the instructions for the installed distribution and adapter rather than copying a configuration intended for another system.

Prepare the physical link

  • Use two matching, known-good Ethernet cables for a two-link setup. The cables need to support the speed you expect; aggregation does not upgrade a cable or port.
  • Record the current port numbers, adapter names and IP configuration so you can roll back if necessary.
  • Do not connect both cables yet. Two independent connections between the same devices can form a switching loop before a LAG is active. NETGEAR warns that “Network loops can slow or stop normal traffic on your network.”

Choose LACP, static LAG or active-backup

The mode must match on both endpoints. LACP and static LAG are not interchangeable settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Mode How it works When to choose it Main limitation
LACP (dynamic 802.3ad) The two endpoints negotiate membership and state for the group. Preferred when both the PC-side software and router or switch support it. A mode, port or driver mismatch prevents the group from becoming active.
Static LAG The ports are placed in a fixed aggregation group without LACP negotiation. Use only when both endpoints document compatible static aggregation. Because there is no negotiation, miswired or mismatched ports can be harder to diagnose.
Active-backup One link carries traffic while another waits for failover. When continuity matters more than distributing traffic across links. It is failover, not load-sharing aggregation; do not expect combined throughput.

RouterOS documentation lists aggregation-capable bonding modes separately from active-backup. Do not infer that a configuration offering both choices will provide the same traffic distribution or failure behavior.

Set up the router or switch first

Use the model-specific interface and leave the cables disconnected until the group is configured. The following paths illustrate two common interfaces; labels and available ports can differ on another firmware version.

NETGEAR Nighthawk example

  1. Sign in to the router’s administration interface.
  2. Open ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Ethernet Port Aggregation. Some models label the page Ethernet Settings.
  3. Choose the designated LAN ports shown by the router.
  4. Select Enable (LACP-IEEE 802.3ad) when the PC-side device supports LACP. Select Enable static LAG only when static aggregation is the matching capability on both ends.
  5. Apply the setting and wait for the router to finish changing its switch configuration.

The number and identity of aggregation ports are model-specific. Do not substitute adjacent ports simply because they look identical.

ASUS example

  1. Sign in to the router.
  2. Open LAN > Switch Control > Bonding / Link aggregation.
  3. Set the feature to Enable and select Apply.
  4. On the peer device, enable LACP when that is the supported mode.

ASUS’s support guidance, updated July 22, 2024, says to check the exact model page for supported aggregation. A menu item or similar wording on another ASUS model does not establish that its ports can be bonded.

Configure the PC without assuming a universal Windows procedure

There is no single set of Windows clicks that applies to every adapter. Intel’s teaming functions vary by adapter generation, driver package and Windows version, and consumer Windows editions do not necessarily expose the same facilities as Windows Server.

  1. Identify the exact Ethernet adapter(s) in the operating system and install the manufacturer-supported driver for that adapter and OS.
  2. Open the adapter’s supported teaming or bonding utility, if one is provided. Select the same mode chosen on the router: dynamic 802.3ad/LACP or compatible static aggregation.
  3. Add only the physical ports that are intended to be members of this group. Do not add a Wi-Fi interface or an unrelated Ethernet adapter unless the utility explicitly supports it.
  4. Apply the team configuration and wait for the logical team interface to appear. Keep the physical cables disconnected while the peer device is still being configured.
  5. Assign or preserve the IP configuration on the logical team interface, not independently on each member port, following the adapter utility’s instructions.

If the adapter utility does not offer a supported team or bond mode, a second port alone is insufficient. You may need a dual-port Ethernet adapter with documented LACP support, a different driver, a supported operating-system edition or a managed switch arrangement that meets the adapter vendor’s requirements.

Linux bonding considerations

Linux’s bonding driver supplies an 802.3ad mode for a bonded interface. The peer must support dynamic IEEE 802.3ad aggregation, and the bond must be configured through the network-management system used by your distribution. The member interfaces should not retain separate, conflicting address settings once they belong to the bond.

Because distribution tools and network-manager versions differ, use the distribution’s documented bonding workflow and verify that the bond is enabled at boot. If you select a static peer mode, use the bonding method that your adapter and distribution document for static aggregation; do not mix static and LACP assumptions.

Connect the cables only after both sides are configured

  1. Verify that the router or switch shows the LAG enabled and that the PC shows the logical team or bond configured.
  2. Connect cable one to the first designated router port and the first PC member port.
  3. Connect cable two to the second designated router port and the second PC member port. For three or more links, repeat only for the documented member ports.
  4. Wait for link lights and the LAG or LACP state to settle. A brief renegotiation or interface reset is normal when a team is created.
  5. Confirm that the PC has network connectivity through the logical interface. Do not assign separate addresses to each member merely to make them appear active.

Connecting multiple cables before configuration can create a loop when neither endpoint has loop prevention for the temporary topology. If the network becomes slow or unreachable immediately after cabling, disconnect the extra links, restore service with one cable, configure both ends, and reconnect in the documented order.

Verify that aggregation is actually working

Link lights only prove that individual physical links have carrier. They do not prove that the links belong to the same LAG.

  • On the router or switch, check the LAG page for an active group, the expected member ports and an established LACP state when using dynamic mode.
  • On the PC, check that the team or bond reports all intended members as connected rather than showing one as standby, failed or detached.
  • Confirm speed and duplex on every member. A speed or duplex mismatch can prevent a healthy group even when the port LEDs are lit.
  • Generate more than one traffic flow, such as simultaneous transfers to different destinations, when testing distribution. A single transfer is not a valid test of aggregate capacity.
  • Disconnect one member cable briefly only after the group is established and you have a recovery plan. The remaining member should retain connectivity if the selected mode supports failover.

Intel identifies speed/duplex, jumbo-frame settings and spanning-tree configuration among peer settings that can cause mismatches. Compare those settings on both sides before changing unrelated network parameters.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What performance to expect

The group’s advertised capacity is a theoretical total of its member links, not a promise for every application. Intel notes that throughput is higher to multiple addresses than to one destination regardless of adapter count. Linux 802.3ad selects an outgoing member using a transmit hash policy, so the traffic pattern, hash inputs and endpoint implementation determine how evenly flows spread.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, two 1-Gbps links may let several clients exchange data concurrently without competing for one physical link. A single file copy between one PC and one server may remain close to one link’s practical rate if the hash keeps that flow on one member. CPU load, storage speed, protocol overhead, router switching capacity and the other endpoint can also become bottlenecks.

Do not quote a fixed percentage improvement. No universal gain is established because the result depends on the number of flows, destinations, link speeds, switch architecture and workload.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The LAG never becomes active LACP and static settings do not match, or one endpoint does not support the selected mode. Confirm the exact mode on both devices and verify that the PC driver and router firmware support it.
One member is down while the other works Wrong port, bad cable, unsupported port speed or a port excluded from the configured group. Move only one cable at a time to the documented member ports; test each cable and compare speed/duplex.
The network slows or stops after both cables are connected A temporary switching loop or an incorrectly formed static group. Disconnect the extra cable, restore a single-link connection, then configure the group before reconnecting.
Connectivity works but one transfer is not faster The flow is hashed to one member; this is normal for many aggregation implementations. Test simultaneous flows to multiple destinations and check the LAG’s member counters.
Intermittent drops or renegotiation Peer settings differ, such as jumbo frames, duplex or spanning-tree behavior. Make the relevant settings consistent and review the adapter and switch event logs.
The PC has two ports but no team option The adapter, driver or OS does not provide teaming support. Check the precise adapter/OS support list; consider a documented dual-port NIC or use a single link.

When new hardware is necessary

If the router lacks aggregation, replacing or adding a router or managed switch with the required LACP or static-LAG feature may be necessary. Choose only after checking the exact model’s supported ports, member count and peer requirements.

If the PC lacks compatible ports or teaming support, a dual-port Ethernet adapter is a conditional option. Before buying, verify the adapter’s operating-system and driver support, its supported LACP or static mode, port speeds and compatibility with the router or switch. A generic two-port adapter without documented teaming support will not create a LAG by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the primary need is uninterrupted service rather than more simultaneous throughput, a single reliable link plus a separately configured active-backup design may be simpler. That decision still requires matching support on both endpoints; active-backup is not a substitute for LACP when the goal is load distribution.

How to roll back safely

  1. Disconnect all but one physical link.
  2. Disable the LAG on the router or switch and remove the team or bond on the PC using the same management tools that created it.
  3. Restore the original IP settings to the remaining physical interface if the team interface held them.
  4. Verify normal connectivity before experimenting with a different mode.

Keep a record of the original port assignments and settings. If a firmware update, driver change or operating-system upgrade removes teaming support, reverting to one link is safer than leaving mismatched member ports connected.
