An imported phone can show an eSIM menu and still fail activation on a US carrier. The reliable order is compatibility first: identify the exact model and regional variant, confirm the phone is unlocked, run the intended carrier’s IMEI check, provide its EID when requested, and only then obtain that carrier’s eSIM activation instructions. After the profile installs, test calls and data before moving a number or cancelling another line. Dual-SIM features are also model- and carrier-specific; matching radio bands or seeing an “Add eSIM” button is not proof that two US lines will work.
The procedures below reflect Apple, T-Mobile, and Verizon guidance available on October 13, 2026. Menus and eligibility rules can change, so use the carrier’s current checker and instructions for your exact device.

What must be true before an imported phone can use eSIM in the US
Four separate checks determine whether setup succeeds:
- Exact device variant: The same product family can have different modem bands, firmware, SIM hardware, and carrier certifications by country or region.
- Network acceptance: The US carrier must recognize the device’s IMEI as eligible for its network and service.
- eSIM eligibility: The carrier may require the phone’s EID and may reject an otherwise network-compatible variant for eSIM activation.
- Unlocked status: A SIM lock can prevent activation, including the use of two lines from different carriers.
Do not port your number, erase your old phone, or buy a plan until the intended carrier confirms the exact device. There is no universal “imported phone” yes-or-no list that covers every regional variant.

Collect the identifiers and software details
Record these details exactly as displayed on the phone and, when possible, photograph the screens before starting:

A product name such as “Galaxy” or “Pixel” is not enough. Give the carrier the complete model code and the IMEI associated with the SIM slot you intend to use.
Check the US carrier before activating
1. Resolve any lock with the original carrier or seller
Ask the original carrier or seller to confirm that the phone is unlocked for another network. If it was recently unlocked, wait for the carrier’s stated processing period before retrying. Verizon says activation after an unlock can take up to 24 hours. A carrier lock can also stop two lines from different carriers from operating on a dual-SIM phone.

2. Run the official BYOD checker
- Open the intended US carrier’s bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker.
- Enter the exact IMEI for the line you want to activate. If the phone has two IMEIs, ask support which one corresponds to eSIM.
- When the checker asks for an EID, copy it directly from the phone rather than typing a value from the box or invoice.
- Save the result and any error code before contacting support.
T-Mobile’s checker distinguishes outcomes such as compatible, blocked, and unknown, and may request the EID when it cannot establish eSIM compatibility. A “compatible” result is evidence for that device and network, not a promise that every feature will work.

3. Treat a passed check as a starting point, not a guarantee
T-Mobile says it cannot test call quality, performance, data speed, feature compatibility, or other functions for devices it did not sell, and that the original carrier’s settings can affect the experience. The checker therefore cannot settle every question about LTE or 5G bands, VoLTE/IMS registration, emergency calling, Wi-Fi calling, roaming, or 5G availability. Ask the carrier specifically about those features for your model and market variant.

Get the carrier-issued eSIM activation
An eSIM profile is issued by the carrier; a generic QR code is not a standalone product. The carrier decides which delivery method is available for your account and device. Apple documents these routes for supported iPhones:
- Carrier activation that appears as a notification during setup or after the plan is assigned.
- A carrier QR code scanned with the Camera during setup, or through Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > Add eSIM after setup.
- A carrier app or activation link.
- Manual entry of server and confirmation details supplied by the carrier.
- Supported device-to-device transfer.
If a carrier does not support the method you expected, ask which method it supports for the exact model. Do not scan a QR code intended for another account or phone.

Using a QR code
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or another working data connection.
- During initial setup, open the Camera and scan the carrier’s QR code. If setup is complete, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Add eSIM and choose the QR-code option.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The carrier may require a confirmation code or account sign-in.
- Wait for the plan to show as active, then label the line so you can distinguish it from another number.
Using carrier activation, an app, or a link
Install the carrier app only from the phone’s official app store, or open the activation link supplied by the carrier. A carrier-activation notification may appear automatically. Keep the phone connected until the status changes to active; closing the process early can leave the profile pending.

Using iPhone Quick Transfer
Apple’s nearby transfer is available only when the carrier supports it. Apple lists these requirements for its documented process: both iPhones use the same Apple Account, the old iPhone is unlocked, the devices are nearby with Bluetooth enabled, and the devices run iOS 18.4 or later. Start the transfer from the new iPhone’s cellular setup screen and approve it on the old phone. When the new plan activates, the old SIM is deactivated. If the transfer option is missing, request the carrier’s QR code, app, link, or manual-entry method instead.
Set up eSIM on an imported Android phone
Android menus differ by manufacturer, region, and software version. Look for Settings > Network & internet, Connections, Mobile network, or SIM manager, then choose an option such as Add SIM, Download a SIM, or Add eSIM. Use the carrier’s device-specific instructions rather than assuming that one Android menu applies to every model.
Some Verizon Android activations require a QR code and direct the customer to instructions for the particular device. Verizon’s stated process says iPhone 12 and newer do not need a QR code under that process; that exception should not be generalized to other carriers or Android phones. If the carrier supplies manual activation details, enter them exactly as provided and do not substitute an EID for an activation code.

Verify the supported hardware combination
Phones may support a physical SIM plus an eSIM, two eSIMs, or only one active line even when multiple profiles can be stored. The exact combination depends on the model and regional variant. Ask the carrier to validate each IMEI or EID and confirm that both lines can be active together.

Add and label the second line
- Activate the first line and confirm it registers before adding the second.
- Open the phone’s SIM or Mobile network settings and choose Add eSIM or the physical-SIM activation option.
- Complete the second carrier’s QR, app, link, transfer, or manual process.
- Assign clear labels such as Personal and Work. Labels help prevent choosing the wrong line for calls or messages.
- Set the preferred voice, messaging, and mobile-data line in the phone’s current SIM settings. The exact menu and whether data can switch automatically vary by device.
Do not promise that both lines provide simultaneous active data. Some phones keep one radio path active for data, limit 5G when two lines are enabled, or require one line to be temporarily disabled.

- Confirm that each line shows the carrier name and an active signal.
- Place an ordinary outgoing call from each line and check that the intended caller ID is used.
- Send and receive a text message on each line if messaging is part of the plan.
- Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a known website with the selected data line.
- Switch the preferred data line and repeat the data test.
- Check that incoming calls reach the correct line while the other line is enabled.
If a call cannot be made after an iPhone eSIM activation, Apple directs the customer to contact the carrier. Give support the full model number, regional variant, IMEI, EID, software version, and the exact error message.
Troubleshoot the common failures
“Incompatible,” “blocked,” or “unknown” IMEI
Re-enter the IMEI without spaces and make sure you used the identifier for the intended SIM slot. If the result is unchanged, ask the carrier whether it represents a network block, an unsupported model, or a database gap. An unknown result should be escalated with the model number and EID; it is not an approval.

Read the EID from the phone’s identifier screen again and compare every digit. Then ask whether the carrier supports eSIM on that exact regional variant. An EID proves that embedded-SIM hardware exists; it does not prove that the carrier will provision it.
Activation is blocked after an unlock
Confirm the original carrier completed the unlock rather than merely submitting a request. Verizon says activation can take up to 24 hours after unlocking. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi, restart it after the waiting period, and retry the carrier’s official activation flow.
The profile installs but there is no service
Check that the line is enabled in SIM settings and that the intended line is selected for data. If calls, texts, or data still fail, the carrier may not have completed provisioning, or original-carrier software settings may interfere with a non-carrier device. Contact the carrier and manufacturer with the identifiers and error details; do not delete the profile unless support tells you to, because reinstalling may require a new activation.
eSIM is unsupported or unreliable
Ask whether the exact model accepts a physical SIM. Verizon explicitly provides a physical-SIM BYOD path when a device lacks eSIM, and T-Mobile also offers a physical-SIM route. Network acceptance, lock status, and feature support still have to be checked for the imported variant.
How to choose between carrier activation paths
When comparing US carriers for an imported phone, compare the operational checks rather than advertising claims:

| Feature support | Are VoLTE/IMS, Wi-Fi calling, emergency calling, roaming, and 5G supported on this precise variant? |
T-Mobile’s published BYOD guidance is explicit that experience on non-T-Mobile devices can vary with the original carrier’s settings. Verizon’s imported-device guidance emphasizes an unlocked phone, and its dual-SIM instructions apply only to listed qualifying Pixel models. Treat those statements as carrier-specific rules, not universal Android or iPhone behavior.
When a physical SIM is the better choice
Use a physical SIM when the imported phone lacks eSIM hardware, the carrier will not provision its EID, or the eSIM process repeatedly fails while the physical slot passes the IMEI check. Request the carrier’s physical SIM and verify that the slot supports the carrier’s required network features. A physical SIM does not bypass an IMEI block or an incompatible regional modem, and it does not automatically make dual-SIM operation possible.
Questions to answer before moving your number
- Has the carrier approved the exact model, region, and IMEI?
- Is the phone fully unlocked, and has any post-unlock waiting period elapsed?
- Has the carrier confirmed EID eligibility and supplied an activation method?
- Does the phone support the desired two-line combination with both lines active?
- Have calls, texts, and mobile data been tested on each line?
- Do you have a physical-SIM fallback or a way to restore the old service if activation fails?
Only after these answers are positive should you port a number, cancel the old plan, or rely on the imported phone as your sole device.
