To play console games on an Android phone, install an emulator app, obtain game files you are authorized to use, place them in storage the app can access, and scan that folder from inside the emulator. The emulator and the game files are separate: an emulator does not automatically include games.
The exact folders and system files depend on the console. The step-by-step example below uses PPSSPP for PSP games because its Android setup is clearly documented. Other systems may require a different emulator, a BIOS or firmware file, different image formats, and different storage permissions.

- Storage access. Newer Android releases ask you to choose a data or Memory Stick folder. The app must be granted access to the location containing your images.
- Game files you are authorized to use. PPSSPP does not ship games. Its documentation describes creating an image from a disc, copying games from a real PSP over USB, and using free demos or homebrew.
Keep the original image file intact. Do not unzip an ISO or CSO into a collection of files unless the emulator’s own documentation specifically requires extraction.

Install an emulator safely
PPSSPP on Android
PPSSPP can be installed through Google Play or Huawei AppGallery where available. Its introduction also describes installing an APK when those stores are unavailable. An APK installed outside an official store is called sideloading. It adds a manual download and installation step, so use the developer’s official download location, verify that the file is intended for Android, and avoid repackaged copies from unknown sites.
After installation, open PPSSPP once before copying games. The first launch creates or requests the storage location that will act as the PSP Memory Stick.
RetroArch for several systems
RetroArch is a multi-system frontend rather than a PSP-only emulator. You install the frontend, select an appropriate core for the console you want to emulate, and then load compatible content. That extra core-selection step makes it more flexible but less direct for a first setup.

PPSSPP setup: choose its Android storage folder
Android changed how apps access shared storage. The PPSSPP documentation describes two broad arrangements:
- Android 11 and later: PPSSPP asks you to choose a data or Memory Stick folder through Android’s folder picker. A
PSPfolder at the root of the storage location you grant to PPSSPP is the recommended arrangement. - Android 10 and older: the commonly used arrangement is a
/PSPfolder in shared storage.
The exact screen wording can differ by Android version and phone manufacturer. When PPSSPP displays its folder-selection prompt, choose a location you can find later with the Files app. If you create the folder yourself, make the name exactly PSP, including capitalization.

PSP/ISO
Place PSP ISO, CSO or supported CHD files inside ISO. PPSSPP can scan subfolders, so you may organize images below that directory by genre or series if you prefer. Do not create a second, similarly named PSP folder in a different storage area and assume the app can see both; Android’s permission grant applies to the location you selected.
If the game list becomes empty
An Android update, restored backup or changed permission can leave PPSSPP pointing at a location it can no longer read. Open its folder browser and select the data or Memory Stick directory again. Then confirm that the image is physically inside the selected folder, rather than in Downloads or on a removable card that was not granted to the app.
Put an authorized PSP game image on the phone
Transfer the file
Use a USB cable, a file manager, or another transfer method you trust to copy the image into PSP/ISO. USB transfer is often easiest for large files: connect the phone, choose the phone’s file-transfer mode in the Android notification, open its internal storage on the computer, and copy the file into the folder you selected for PPSSPP.
Keep enough free space for the image and for save data. A transfer that appears complete but leaves a zero-byte or partially copied file will not load. Check the file size after copying and safely disconnect the phone before launching the game.

PPSSPP’s own guidance says its application does not include games. It documents making an ISO from a disc, copying downloaded games from a real PSP through USB, and downloading free demos or homebrew. Use those documented, authorized routes rather than downloading commercial game images from sites that do not have permission to distribute them.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s general FAQ explains that copyright protects original works including computer software. That general rule does not answer every question about personal backups, downloads or bypassing a protection measure. Exceptions and enforcement differ by country and by circumstance, so owning a physical copy is not a universal legal guarantee for every method of obtaining or converting a file. If the legal position matters for your situation, consult the law that applies where you live.
Make PPSSPP scan the game
- Open PPSSPP and select the Games tab.
- Browse to the storage folder you granted to the app, then open
PSP/ISO(or the subfolder where you placed the image). - Let PPSSPP scan the directory. Its setup guide says subfolders are scanned as well.
- Tap the game when its title appears. The first launch may create folders for saves, settings and other PSP data.
If no title appears, browse to the exact folder again instead of relying only on a shortcut. Confirm that the extension is one PPSSPP supports: ISO, CSO, or CHD on version 1.17 or newer. A file still inside a ZIP archive, an incomplete transfer, or an image stored outside the granted folder will not appear as a playable title.

Adjust graphics only after the game loads
Start with the default settings. Change one option at a time so you can identify the setting responsible for an improvement or a new problem.
Choose a graphics backend
PPSSPP’s guide suggests trying Vulkan on current phones. If Vulkan produces a black screen or an immediate crash, switch the graphics backend to OpenGL on Android and try again. This is vendor guidance, not a promise of a particular frame rate: performance varies by phone, Android version, game and selected enhancements.
Use a recovery sequence
- Close the running game and return to PPSSPP’s graphics settings.
- Change only Vulkan to OpenGL, or OpenGL to Vulkan if you are testing the reverse.
- Launch the same game again and check whether the original symptom remains.
- If the change makes things worse, restore the previous backend before changing another option.
A black screen or crash is not evidence that the image is bad. First test the alternate backend, verify the file transfer, and try the emulator’s default enhancements before deleting files.
Save progress reliably
PSP games have their own in-game save menus. Use them for important progress. PPSSPP says save states are tied to the version that wrote them, so a future app update or a different PPSSPP build may not reliably read every state.
Use a save state as a convenience for pausing or experimenting, but create a normal in-game save before changing emulator versions, moving the Memory Stick folder, or troubleshooting. Back up the PPSSPP save-data folders if the progress is valuable and you are about to reset storage permissions or replace the phone.
Set up controls for a phone
Touch controls
PPSSPP displays an on-screen PSP control layout. Its control settings let you move, resize or hide virtual buttons so your thumbs do not cover the action. Open the control-mapping or on-screen-control configuration, select a button, and drag or resize it. Make small changes, test them in a game, and then continue.
Hardware controllers
PPSSPP supports hardware control mapping. A Bluetooth or USB controller is optional; no particular model, price or phone combination is established here. Check that the controller connects to Android and that its buttons can be assigned in PPSSPP before buying it for this purpose. The phone’s Bluetooth version, USB adapter and physical clearance can affect the experience.

When a multi-system frontend makes sense
Choose a standalone emulator when you mainly want one console and prefer the fewest moving parts. Choose a frontend such as RetroArch when you want one library interface for several systems and are willing to configure a core for each one.
Do not copy the PPSSPP folder recipe to every RetroArch core. Console systems can differ in image formats, BIOS or firmware requirements, naming conventions and permitted storage locations. Read the core’s Android instructions, identify whether a system file is required, and create the folders it specifies. The available evidence does not establish that RetroArch will run faster or better than a standalone emulator on a particular phone.
Do not confuse the Android Studio Emulator with console emulation
Android Studio’s Emulator is a virtual Android device intended for application development and testing. It runs on a computer and is not the ordinary workflow for adding PSP games to a physical Android phone.
For development, Android Developers says dragging a file onto the virtual device places it in /sdcard/Download/. You can then find it in Device Explorer or the virtual device’s Downloads or Files app. That transfer behavior applies to the Android Studio virtual device, not to PPSSPP’s PSP Memory Stick folder on a phone. The Android Developers page was last updated March 6, 2026 UTC.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The emulator is installed, but no games appear
- Open the app’s folder browser and select the granted data or Memory Stick folder again.
- Check that the file is in
PSP/ISOunder that exact location, not merely in Downloads. - Confirm the extension is ISO, CSO or, for CHD, PPSSPP 1.17 or newer.
- Make sure the file is not still compressed in ZIP or another archive.
- Check that the copy finished and that the file is not zero bytes.
The game appears but will not start
- Try another authorized image or verify the original transfer before changing graphics settings.
- Return graphics enhancements to their defaults.
- Switch between Vulkan and OpenGL; use OpenGL if Vulkan causes a black screen or immediate crash.
- Confirm that the image belongs to the system the emulator supports. A file for a different console cannot be made playable by renaming its extension.
Progress disappeared
- Look for the game’s normal save through its in-game load menu.
- Check whether you changed the selected Memory Stick folder or Android storage permission.
- Remember that save states are version-tied; open them with the PPSSPP version that created them when possible.
- Restore backed-up save data only after selecting the correct storage folder.
An APK will not install
Verify that the APK came from the emulator developer’s official distribution route, matches the phone’s Android architecture, and was downloaded completely. Android may block installation from an unknown source until you grant the relevant installer permission. If the package or source cannot be verified, use a supported app store or do not install it.
A practical first-session checklist
- Install PPSSPP from a supported store or its official Android distribution.
- Launch it and choose the Android data or Memory Stick folder when prompted.
- Create
PSP/ISOinside that selected location. - Copy an authorized ISO, CSO or supported CHD image into the folder.
- Open Games, browse to the folder and let PPSSPP scan it.
- Launch the title with default graphics settings.
- Use the game’s own save menu for important progress.
- Adjust touch controls, add a compatible controller, or test Vulkan/OpenGL only if needed.
This workflow is PSP-specific. For another console, identify the correct emulator, file format, BIOS or firmware requirement, and Android storage instructions before copying files.
