To use two apps side by side on iPhone Duo, open the phone to activate its 7.6-inch inner display, launch the first app, then drag a second app from the home indicator to the left or right edge until the Split View drop area appears. Release it to create two independent app areas in a 50/50 layout.
The layout is designed to survive folding, rotation and switching between the inner and outer screens. The exact result depends on whether each app supports resizable layouts, picture-in-picture and the regular inner-display size class.

What dual-screen multitasking on iPhone Duo actually does
Apple describes iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. When opened, it presents a 7.6-inch inner display; when closed, the outer display measures 5.4 inches. Apple says the inner screen is 50 percent larger than the display on iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the closed outer screen provides 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Those figures are Apple’s 2026 product specifications.
Split View places two app areas on the open inner display. Each half operates independently, so you can keep one app visible while working in the other instead of repeatedly opening the app switcher. Apple’s example shows Siri beside Mail, but the same arrangement can be used with any pair of apps that can render a useful resizable interface.

Apple summarized the feature in its October 15, 2026 newsroom product update: “The expansive display on iPhone Duo supercharges productivity with Split View multitasking and seamless app switching.” In practical terms, the experience has three parts:
- Placement: drag a second app to an edge of the inner display to create Split View.
- Continuation: switch between apps with the normal bottom-edge gesture, while the foldable system adapts the layout to the phone’s pose.
- Adaptation: apps resize or move controls as the phone opens, closes, rotates or rests partly folded.
Displays, poses and terminology
| Phone state | Display used | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Fully open | 7.6-inch inner display | The intended state for 50/50 Split View with two app areas. |
| Fully closed | 5.4-inch outer display | Content moves to the outside screen; the two-column inner layout is no longer visible. |
| Rotated sideways | Inner or outer display, depending on the pose | iOS reorients content and apps resize for the new arrangement. |
| Partly folded | The active portion of the inner display | Controls and interactive elements move toward the stable outer edge or lower half. A picture-in-picture video can remain pinned at the top while the active app becomes shorter vertically. |
Apple’s developer guidance tells app makers to design for regular horizontal and vertical size classes on the inner display rather than relying on fixed interface-orientation checks. That is why two apps can behave differently even when both open normally on iPhone Duo.
What you need before setting up Split View
- An iPhone Duo opened far enough for the 7.6-inch inner display to be active.
- Two installed apps you want to use together.
- Apps that can render a resizable layout. Apps do not have to be built with the iOS 27 SDK to run on iPhone Duo, but apps updated for newer SDKs can make better use of the full inner screen.
- A current system build if a particular app or multitasking behavior is missing. The available evidence identifies iOS 27-era behavior but does not specify a separate minimum point release.
There is no separate multitasking mode to enable in Settings in the documented setup. The operation starts from the open inner display and uses the home-indicator gesture.

- Open iPhone Duo. Unfold the phone until the 7.6-inch inner display is active. Starting with the device closed leaves you on the 5.4-inch outer display, where the inner Split View arrangement cannot be shown.
- Open the first app. Launch the app that should occupy one half of the screen. For a writing session, this might be Mail; for a reference task, it could be a browser or notes app. The first app remains the base view while you add the second.
- Begin the app switch gesture. Place your finger on the home indicator at the bottom edge and drag another app toward the left or right side of the inner display. Apple’s developer guidance documents this edge-placement gesture.
- Wait for the drop area. Keep dragging until iOS shows the destination region on the chosen side. If you release before that region appears, the second app may simply open normally instead of becoming a pane.
- Release the second app. Let go when the drop area is visible. iOS creates a 50/50 Split View with two independent app areas.
- Work in either half. Tap inside a pane to make it active, then use that app normally. Apple’s design guidance treats each half as an independent area, so actions in one app do not replace the other pane.
The documented layout is 50/50. The available guidance does not establish an additional three-column mode or a precise divider-drag control, so do not assume that every iPhone Duo app pair supports a custom width ratio.

Switch apps without losing the two-app workflow
Swipe up from the bottom to open the app-switching view, then choose the app you need. Apple describes the broader experience as seamless app switching, and a MacRumors report says users can save an app pair for returning to it later. The exact save control and its placement can vary by system build, so look for an option associated with the current two-app arrangement in the app switcher rather than expecting a named Settings page.
How to make an app pair useful
- Pair an app that supplies information with one that consumes it, such as Mail beside Siri when dictating or checking a message.
- Keep both apps open while moving between related tasks; switching away should not require rebuilding the pair unless iOS or an app closes one side.
- If a saved pair does not reappear, reopen both apps on the inner display and recreate Split View with the edge-drag procedure. The evidence confirms the ability to save a pair but does not specify how long a saved arrangement persists after a restart, update or app removal.
What happens when you fold, close or rotate iPhone Duo
Closing the phone
When the hinge closes, iOS switches content to the appropriate display. The two independent inner-screen areas cannot remain side by side on the 5.4-inch outer display, so the system presents the active content in a form suited to that screen. Reopen the phone to return to the larger inner-display workspace.
Rotating the phone
Turning iPhone Duo sideways causes iOS to reorient the interface. Apps that support resizable layouts adapt to the new horizontal and vertical size classes. Apple recommends that developers respond to those size classes instead of hard-coding an orientation check, which helps a Split View pair continue working after rotation.

A partly folded phone changes both the available height and the most stable area to touch. Apple’s design guidance moves controls and interactive elements toward the stable outer edge or lower half. This reduces the need to reach across the hinge. A video running in picture-in-picture can remain pinned at the top while the active app resizes vertically beneath it.

Changing poses in practice
Move the phone gradually when possible, especially while entering text or tapping small controls. iOS may resize an app as the hinge angle changes. If a control appears to move, use the new lower or outer-edge position rather than repeatedly forcing the previous layout. Apps that do not handle the regular inner-display size class well may show a less useful arrangement until they are updated.
App compatibility: what determines a good two-app pair
Every app can run on iPhone Duo even if it was not built with the iOS 27 SDK, according to Apple’s developer guidance. That does not mean every app offers an equally good Split View experience. Evaluate a candidate pair on four axes.
| Compatibility axis | Why it matters | What you should look for |
|---|---|---|
| Resizable layout | The app must redraw itself as each pane becomes narrower or shorter. | Text, buttons and navigation remain visible without being clipped or forced into an unusable desktop-like view. |
| Picture-in-picture support | A video can occupy a floating region while the main app changes size. | The video stays visible when the hinge is partly folded and does not cover essential controls. |
| Useful sidebar or split navigation | The regular inner-display size class provides more room for navigation and content. | A sidebar, list-detail view or other secondary column remains available instead of collapsing immediately. |
| Hinge and edge behavior | The hinge and stable outer edge affect where you can comfortably tap. | Controls move toward the lower or outer edge in a partly folded pose and remain reachable after rotation. |
Newer SDK support can improve how an app uses the complete inner display, but an SDK version alone does not guarantee a particular Split View layout. Check the app’s behavior in both the fully open and partly folded positions.
Practical setups for work and media
Reference while writing
Open a notes, mail or document app first, then place a reference app on the other side. Keep the text-entry app in the pane where the keyboard and primary controls are easiest to reach. If the reference app exposes a sidebar at the regular inner-display size class, leave it open rather than repeatedly switching screens.

Voice assistance beside a message
Apple’s own demonstration places Siri beside Mail. This pairing is useful when you want an assistant surface visible while reviewing or composing a message. The two panes remain independent, so tapping Mail does not replace the Siri area unless you deliberately switch or close it.
Video with a control app
Use a video app that supports picture-in-picture alongside another app. In a partly folded pose, Apple’s guidance allows the video to remain pinned at the top while the active app resizes vertically. If the video disappears, verify that the video app actually supports picture-in-picture; Split View support alone does not establish it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.StandBy on either display
StandBy can run on either display even when iPhone Duo is not charging. In that mode, the phone can act as a clock, widget hub or photo frame. StandBy is a separate presentation mode rather than a second Split View pane, so use it when you want glanceable information instead of two interactive apps.

Troubleshooting when the second app will not dock
No drop area appears
- Confirm that iPhone Duo is fully open and that the inner display is active.
- Start the drag from the home indicator and continue toward the left or right edge; releasing in the middle of the screen does not invoke edge placement.
- Try the other edge. The documented gesture supports left- or right-side placement.
- Test a different app. An app that does not provide a useful resizable layout may not expose the expected destination behavior.
The app opens but does not share the screen
Recreate the arrangement from the first app: open the base app, drag the second app from the home indicator, wait for the visible drop region, and release only after it appears. If the result is still a single full-screen app, the pair may not be compatible with the available Split View behavior.

Controls are hidden after folding
Change the hinge angle slightly and look toward the stable outer edge or lower half. Apple’s foldable design guidance intentionally moves interactive elements there. An app that has not adapted to the regular size classes may need an update before its controls become comfortable in a partly folded pose.
The layout breaks after rotation
Return briefly to the fully open position, let the interface settle, then rotate again. If only one app consistently fails, that app may be relying on fixed orientation assumptions rather than responding to size classes. Updating the app is the appropriate long-term fix; Apple says newer SDKs improve full-screen use but does not promise a universal compatibility result.
Limits to keep in mind
- The documented Split View arrangement is 50/50; the available product guidance does not confirm arbitrary pane widths.
- Two apps can be visible independently, but their internal features still depend on each app’s own support for resizing, sidebars and picture-in-picture.
- Closing the phone changes the active display, so the inner two-pane workspace should be treated as an open-device layout.
- A saved app pair is reported as available, but its exact control, persistence rules and behavior after updates are not specified in the available product documentation.
- Apps built without the iOS 27 SDK can run, yet they may not take full advantage of the 7.6-inch inner display or changing hinge poses.
A reliable daily routine
- Open iPhone Duo before starting the task.
- Launch the app you will use most and place the supporting app on the left or right edge.
- Confirm both panes render correctly in the fully open position.
- Rotate once if you need a landscape arrangement, then wait for both apps to resize.
- If you plan to hold the phone partly folded, test where each app’s controls move before entering important text.
- Use the bottom swipe to switch apps, and save the pair when the app-switching interface offers that option.
- Close or reopen the phone only after saving work that depends on the inner-screen arrangement; closing moves content to the outer display.
With that routine, dual-screen multitasking on iPhone Duo is straightforward: open the phone, dock a second app from the home indicator, and let iOS adapt the pair to the hinge position. The quality of the result ultimately depends on each app’s resizable interface rather than on the Split View gesture itself.
