To use Dolby Atmos, you need an Apple TV 4K, an Atmos-compatible soundbar, AV receiver or supported HomePod setup, an HDMI connection that matches that equipment, and a title that includes an Atmos track. For a soundbar or receiver, connect Apple TV 4K directly to the device, then connect the device to the television. Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and look for Dolby Atmos under Immersive Audio. Finally, check the current title for the Dolby Atmos icon. Apple says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC in the soundbar/receiver arrangement, so the connection route matters.
What you need before setting up Dolby Atmos
This procedure applies to Apple TV 4K. Apple’s documentation does not present every Apple TV model as Atmos-capable, and Atmos is not guaranteed in every app, film, programme or audio chain. The device, audio system, television connection and the title you are watching all have to support the required format.

| Requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Apple TV | An Apple TV 4K connected to the television by HDMI. |
| Audio equipment | A Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbar, AV receiver or supported HomePod arrangement. HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos. |
| Content | The film, programme or app must provide an Atmos audio track. A compatible system cannot add Atmos to a title that does not include it. |
| Connection | For a soundbar or receiver, use Apple TV 4K HDMI output to an Atmos-capable HDMI input, then the device’s HDMI output to the television. |
| Cable | For a 4K television with HDR, Apple specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, sold separately, where the existing cable is inadequate. |
| Quick Start | Quick Start must be enabled; Apple says Dolby Atmos will not play when it is off. |
A cable can carry the signal required by the system, but it cannot make a non-Atmos soundbar, receiver, television or title support Atmos. When replacing equipment, check Atmos support and the HDMI input/output specifications rather than choosing solely by cable or product branding. Apple’s setup guide explains the basic Apple TV 4K connection and cable requirement at Apple’s Apple TV 4K setup guide.
Choose the correct audio connection
Your wiring depends on whether the speakers are an Atmos soundbar or receiver, or a HomePod system. These routes are not interchangeable.

| System | Recommended route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Atmos soundbar | Apple TV 4K HDMI output → soundbar HDMI input; soundbar HDMI output → television HDMI input. | Apple says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC connections in this soundbar/receiver setup. |
| Atmos AV receiver | Apple TV 4K HDMI output → Atmos-capable receiver HDMI input; receiver HDMI output → television HDMI input. | The receiver must support Atmos and pass through the desired HDR or Dolby Vision video format if you want both audio and video capabilities. |
| One or two HomePod speakers | Set the HomePod or stereo pair as Apple TV’s default audio output. For television audio, use a supported Apple TV 4K and the television’s eARC connection. | HomePod mini does not support Atmos. The eARC HomePod route is different from sending Apple TV audio over ARC to a soundbar or receiver. |
Apple’s soundbar and receiver guidance is explicit: “Apple TV 4K uses a high bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that doesn’t work over ARC connections.” This statement concerns Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos signal and Apple’s documented soundbar/receiver arrangement; it is not a universal claim that every Atmos signal on every device can never use ARC. See the Apple Support setup instructions for the equipment-specific diagram.
Set up an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver
- Connect Apple TV 4K to the audio device. Plug the Apple TV 4K HDMI output into an HDMI input on the Dolby Atmos soundbar or AV receiver. Use an input that the device identifies as supporting the required audio and video formats.
- Connect the audio device to the television. Run an HDMI cable from the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the television.
- Check video pass-through before choosing this route. Apple notes that an audio device may handle Atmos but fail to pass through HDR10 or Dolby Vision. If your receiver or soundbar cannot pass the video format you want, you may instead need to connect Apple TV 4K directly to the television for that video format. To receive both the desired high-quality video and Atmos through one chain, the television, receiver or soundbar must support both.
- Turn on the television and audio device. Select the HDMI input receiving the soundbar or receiver output. The exact input names vary by television and audio device.
- Leave ARC out of this signal path. Do not route Apple TV 4K through the television and expect the television’s ARC connection to carry Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos signal back to the soundbar or receiver. Use the direct HDMI route above unless your equipment documentation describes a different, supported arrangement.
- Open Apple TV’s audio settings. On Apple TV 4K, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. Under Immersive Audio, Dolby Atmos should be available when the connected system is recognised as compatible.
Most televisions do not support Dolby Atmos pass-through to soundbars and receivers, according to Apple. A television can therefore display video correctly while the audio route prevents the Atmos option from appearing.
Set up HomePod for Apple TV Atmos
HomePod is a separate supported route. Apple lists one or two HomePod speakers for Apple TV 4K Atmos use and says HomePod mini does not support Atmos.

Use HomePod as the Apple TV audio output
- Place and configure the HomePod or stereo pair so it is available to Apple TV.
- On Apple TV, select the HomePod or stereo pair as the default audio output.
- Return to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and check whether Dolby Atmos appears under Immersive Audio.
Use television audio through eARC
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) includes eARC. With a television that supports eARC, this can pass full-resolution audio, including Dolby Atmos, from the television to Apple TV 4K and then to HomePod. The television, not merely the cable, must provide an eARC-capable HDMI port.
- Connect Apple TV 4K and the television using the television’s designated eARC HDMI port, following Apple’s HomePod home-theatre arrangement.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the television and any related device settings required for the television to control the connection.
- On Apple TV, choose the HomePod as the default audio output.
- Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output > Audio Return Channel > Play Television Audio.
- Apply any additional eARC, CEC or audio-output setting required by the television’s own menu.
This eARC path is not the same as connecting a soundbar or receiver through ARC. If you are troubleshooting a soundbar or receiver, use the direct HDMI arrangement described earlier; if you are troubleshooting HomePod television audio, confirm the Apple TV 4K generation and the television’s eARC support first. Apple’s detailed HomePod instructions are available in its HomePod and AirPlay-enabled speakers home-theatre guide.

Turn on Dolby Atmos and understand the format choices
Check the Immersive Audio setting
On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. Under Immersive Audio, confirm that Dolby Atmos is shown and enabled. If the Immersive Audio section and Dolby Atmos option are missing, Apple indicates that the connected home-entertainment setup may need to change; it is not a sign that every title has suddenly lost Atmos.
Let Apple TV select the highest supported quality
Apple says Apple TV 4K automatically plays the highest quality supported by both the connected entertainment system and the content. This means you normally should not force a manual format simply because a receiver display shows a different label.
If you need to select a format manually, use Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format > Change Format. Apple describes the choices as follows:
- Stereo: uncompressed two-channel PCM.
- Dolby Digital 5.1: a compressed 5.1 re-encode.
- Dolby Atmos: the Atmos on/off choice when the system and content support it.
Apple recommends Dolby Digital 5.1 only when the equipment does not support Atmos or multichannel PCM. Do not use a forced format as the default fix for an incorrectly wired system.
Interpret the receiver’s display carefully
Apple also documents Continuous Audio Connection, sometimes described with Dolby MAT. When it is enabled, an older receiver may indicate an Atmos signal even while the original programme audio is playing as intended. The receiver display alone can therefore be misleading. Check three things together: Apple TV’s format setting, the title’s own audio information and the receiver’s readout. A receiver label by itself does not prove that the programme currently contains an Atmos track.

Enable Quick Start
Apple states that Dolby Atmos will not play when Quick Start is off. The documented path is Settings > Apps > iTunes Films and TV Shows > Quick Start. Menu wording can vary with the software language or release, so look for the equivalent Quick Start control if the labels are localised differently.
Check whether the title is actually playing Atmos
A correctly configured system can still play ordinary surround sound when the selected title or version has no Atmos track. Verify the programme you are watching instead of relying only on the global setting.
Apple TV+
While viewing an Apple TV+ title, press Menu on the Apple TV remote. Look for the Dolby Atmos icon in the title information. The icon is a content-availability cue for that programme or film.
iTunes Movies and third-party apps
For an iTunes Movie or a title in a third-party app, swipe down on the Apple TV remote’s Touch surface and open Info. Check the listed audio information for the Dolby Atmos icon.
If the icon is absent, first establish whether that particular title, language version or app stream supplies Atmos. Do not infer a hardware failure solely from one title lacking the badge.

Troubleshoot Dolby Atmos in the right order
The Dolby Atmos option is missing
- Confirm that the device is an Apple TV 4K.
- Check that the soundbar, receiver or HomePod arrangement is Atmos-compatible. HomePod mini is not an Atmos solution.
- For a soundbar or receiver, verify that Apple TV 4K is connected directly to an Atmos-capable HDMI input and that the device’s HDMI output goes to the television.
- Check whether the television is being used as an ARC pass-through route. Apple’s documented high-bandwidth Apple TV 4K Atmos signal does not work over ARC in the soundbar/receiver setup.
- Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format again after correcting the wiring. If Immersive Audio still does not appear, the equipment chain may not advertise a supported Atmos configuration.
The option appears, but a title has no Atmos
Open the title’s information panel and look for the Dolby Atmos icon. Apple TV+ uses the Menu button; iTunes Movies and third-party apps use the Touch surface and Info. The system can be ready while a particular title or version lacks an Atmos track.
The receiver says Atmos, but the programme does not sound like Atmos
Check Apple TV’s selected format and the title information together with the receiver display. Continuous Audio Connection and Dolby MAT can cause some older receivers to show an Atmos indication while the original audio is being delivered as intended. Treat the title’s information as the content check and the Apple TV setting as the system check.
The soundbar handles Atmos but video quality is wrong
Check pass-through specifications for HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Apple notes that some receivers and soundbars support Atmos but cannot pass one or both high-quality video formats. You may have to connect Apple TV 4K directly to the television for video, or use an audio device that supports both the desired video format and Atmos.
HomePod does not play television audio in Atmos
- Confirm that the Apple TV 4K is second generation or later for the documented eARC capability.
- Confirm that the television has an eARC HDMI port and that Apple TV is connected according to the HomePod arrangement.
- Enable HDMI-CEC and the television’s eARC function.
- Set HomePod or the stereo pair as the default audio output.
- Use Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output > Audio Return Channel > Play Television Audio.
- Check the television’s own audio settings, since Apple notes that additional TV configuration may be required.
Atmos stopped working after a setting change
Check Quick Start at Settings > Apps > iTunes Films and TV Shows > Quick Start. Apple explicitly says Atmos will not play while Quick Start is off. Then repeat the title-information check so you know the current content still offers Atmos.

How to choose a cable or replace equipment
Only replace hardware when the current chain fails one of the documented requirements. For a 4K television that supports HDR, Apple identifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable as the relevant cable class. Match the cable to the HDMI connection carrying the required video format; buying by brand alone does not establish Atmos compatibility.
| Decision | What to verify | When a change is justified |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the existing HDMI cable | It reliably carries the television’s required 4K and HDR signal on the chosen route. | No change is needed when the cable and ports already meet those requirements. |
| Buy an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable | The television requires 4K HDR and the existing cable cannot reliably carry it. | Use the cable class Apple specifies for that 4K HDR setup. |
| Replace or add a soundbar/receiver | The current audio device lacks Dolby Atmos support, the needed HDMI input/output path or required video pass-through. | Choose equipment that supports Atmos and the HDR10 or Dolby Vision formats you intend to use. |
| Use HomePod instead | You have a supported HomePod or stereo pair and, for television audio, an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) with an eARC-capable television. | Use this only when the HomePod/eARC requirements match your system; it is not a workaround for an ARC soundbar path. |
Apple’s format guidance and setup notes are at Apple’s Apple TV 4K audio-format support page. They explain automatic selection, manual format choices and the equipment conditions behind Dolby Atmos playback.
A final three-part verification
- System: On Apple TV 4K, Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format shows Dolby Atmos under Immersive Audio.
- Content: The current title’s information panel shows the Dolby Atmos icon.
- Path: The HDMI wiring matches the audio system: direct Apple TV 4K HDMI to a soundbar or receiver, or the separate eARC and HomePod arrangement.
When all three checks pass and Quick Start is enabled, Apple TV 4K can select Atmos automatically whenever the connected equipment and the title support it.
