To monitor a page you can already access while signed in, create a Distill monitor from that page and choose a local browser device. For checks that must run while your computer is off, use a Distill cloud option—such as a Dedicated Cloud Device, a saved-cookie Profile, or a login macro—if the site’s authentication flow and your plan support it.
Choose where Distill should run the checks
Distill’s local monitors run in a browser or app on your device, so that device and the relevant browser or app must be available for checks to run. Cloud monitors run on Distill’s servers and do not depend on your computer being on. Distill explains this distinction in What is Distill?.

| Option | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Local browser | The page is already signed in on your computer, or the site blocks cloud checks. | The device and browser/app must be running when checks are scheduled. |
| Dedicated Cloud Device | You need checks to continue while your computer is off and want a persistent remote browser session. | Distill says these devices preserve cookies and local storage, and are included on all paid plans. |
| Cloud Profile with saved cookies | The site permits a saved-cookie session in a remote browser. | Cookies can expire and need to be saved again; Profile availability depends on the subscription plan. |
| Cloud macro | The login can be replayed through the recorded interactions supported by Distill. | Macro availability depends on the subscription plan, and not every interactive login flow can be automated. |
Distill’s local-monitoring documentation describes login-required pages as a use case that maintains active login sessions without repeated authentication. That is a description of the intended local use case, not a guarantee that every site or login flow will work.

- Install and pin the Distill extension in the browser where you can sign in to the target site.
- Open the target page, sign in manually, and confirm that the specific content you want to watch is visible.
- Click the Distill extension. Choose full-page monitoring or select the specific content area. Watching only the meaningful section can avoid alerts caused by unrelated page changes.
- In the monitor options, choose the local browser as the device. Add a clear monitor name, set a suitable schedule, configure alert actions, and save.
- Keep the browser/app and computer available for scheduled checks. A local monitor cannot run while its device is off.
Distill’s Chrome extension setup guide covers monitor creation, content selection, device choice, schedule, and alerts. For enterprise local-monitoring setups, associate the monitor with the device’s Primary Workspace; use a shared workspace if teammates need to see and manage it. Workspace association is configured per browser/device.

Run checks in Distill’s cloud
Cloud setup depends on how the site handles authentication. Distill documents Dedicated Cloud Devices, Profiles with saved cookies, and macros. The site may require a method the selected feature can actually maintain.
Dedicated Cloud Device
- In Distill’s Watchlist, open Devices and add a Dedicated Cloud Device.
- Open and configure its remote browser, then sign in to the target site.
- Close the device after the login session has been saved.
- Create the monitor and select that Dedicated Cloud Device as its device.
Distill says Dedicated Cloud Devices preserve browser data such as cookies and local storage and can store a login session for authorized content. The feature is included on all paid plans, according to Distill’s Dedicated Cloud Devices documentation.

Profile and saved cookies
- Create a Profile and open its remote browser.
- Sign in to the target site and save the cookies for the Profile.
- Create a “Webpage with profile” monitor and select that Profile.
- If the session stops working because cookies expire, reopen the Profile, sign in again, and save the cookies again.
Distill’s login guide describes this Profile workflow. Profile counts depend on subscription plan; check your account’s current plan details for availability. The guide was published on 2022-01-17, so treat its workflow as Distill’s documented method rather than a statement of current plan quotas. See How to monitor webpages with login and password?.

Login macro
Distill’s guide also describes recording the required login interactions in a macro, then selecting that macro when creating the monitor. Once the macro reaches the authenticated page, select the content to monitor. Macro availability depends on the subscription plan.

Do not assume that multi-factor authentication, email confirmation, CAPTCHA, or other interactive steps can be replayed automatically. Distill’s forum response about email-based authentication describes a case where cloud macros could not automate the email authentication, and recommends local Chrome monitoring with an existing signed-in session as a workaround. That example concerns the case described, not every site or login flow.
Troubleshoot failed checks and missed changes
- Forbidden or unauthorized response: The page may require authentication or expected cookies may be missing. Inspect the check’s error details, then reauthenticate and refresh the saved session; if cloud access is unsuitable, try a local browser check.
- A monitor worked and then stopped: A saved cookie session may have expired. Sign in again in the relevant Profile or Dedicated Cloud Device and save the session again.
- The site blocks cloud access: Try local checks from the signed-in browser instead. Distill lists local checks as an alternative when cloud access is blocked.
- The monitor runs but misses changes: Check that the changing content was selected. If it loads after the initial page load, add a delay before extraction. Distill’s troubleshooting guidance identifies changed selectors and delayed content as possible causes.
- A background check fails on an interactive page: Some pages need an active tab. Distill suggests using its desktop app for local checks or investigating a cloud check.
- An alert did not arrive: Distinguish a failed check from a successful check that found no selected-content change. Review the monitor’s check history/error log, then confirm the session, selection, and loading timing before rebuilding the monitor. Distill’s alert troubleshooting guide covers missed alerts and expired sessions.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Its screenshot call captures a URL, but it is not a Distill change-monitor replacement: use it for one-off screenshots or agent-driven capture, and only where you are authorized to access the page. Do not send private credentials or assume it can authenticate to a protected page unless you have configured an appropriate permitted access method.
