In Manager Career, the documented route is Squad > Tactical Preset. Save or activate the tactic after testing it; the exact menu location can differ in other modes.
The important distinction is that team settings define the collective shape and risk level, while player Roles and Focuses describe how individuals behave inside that shape. FC 26 makes those roles less restrictive, adds four roles and a Versatile focus, and lets you reuse tactics with shareable codes.

Where to set up custom tactics in FC 26
Use the route that matches your mode rather than assuming every menu is identical.
Manager Career
- From the main Career menu, open the Squad tab.
- Select Tactical Preset. This is EA’s documented entry point for changing the team setup in Career Mode.
- Choose an existing preset or select the option to create or edit a tactic.
Other modes also expose squad and tactics-management screens, but their labels and button paths can vary by platform and interface version. If you do not see Tactical Preset, look for the mode’s squad, team management or tactics screen instead of forcing the Career Mode path.

Start with a preset or build a custom tactic
Why a preset is useful
A preset gives you a coherent starting point: a formation, team approach and initial player assignments that are designed to work together. It is useful when you are learning FC IQ or want to change the team’s behavior quickly without configuring every player first.
Career Mode lists FC Preset, Direct Play, Cautious and Custom as options. Selecting a preset does not lock you out of editing. Once you change a preset setting, Career Mode treats the result as a Custom Preset.
When to create your own
Build from scratch when the preset’s shape does not suit your squad. For example, a slow centre-back pairing may struggle with an extremely high line, while a team with several creative midfielders may waste them in a direct, low-possession setup. Start with the formation and the players you actually intend to use, then tune the team controls and roles around them.
Choose the formation before assigning instructions
Formation is more than the number printed beside it. It establishes the base shape when your team is defending and affects which positions and roles are available. EA describes it this way in the FC IQ system: the formation is how the team lines up without the ball.
Choose a formation by answering three questions:
- Where do you want your first defensive line and midfield screen to be?
- Which players must have a natural position or a realistic alternative?
- How many players should be available behind the ball when an attack breaks down?
A formation with wide midfielders, for example, gives you different defensive coverage and attacking lanes from one with narrow central midfielders. Do not copy a formation only because it is popular. A shape that leaves your full-backs exposed or places your best passer away from the build-up can be less effective for your squad than a less fashionable option.
Set the team-level controls
Build-Up Style
Build-Up Style sets the team’s priority and tempo when moving forward. It affects how quickly players offer for the ball, how aggressively the team tries to progress and how much risk is accepted during possession.
Use a patient setting when you want short options and time to move the opponent. Use a more direct setting when your forwards are faster than the opposing back line or when you want to attack space early. The correct choice depends on your passing ability, forward profiles and the amount of support your formation provides.

Defensive Approach
Defensive Approach combines the defensive line or depth with pressure behavior and run tracking. EA’s FC 25 documentation describes the broad ideas as follows:
- Deep: a safety-first block that protects space behind the defence.
- Balanced: a flexible middle ground between containment and pressure.
- High: a higher, riskier line that compresses the pitch but leaves more room behind it.
- Aggressive: a high press that can win the ball quickly while consuming more stamina.
Those descriptions come from FC 25’s FC IQ documentation. FC 26 can adjust labels or behavior, so read the explanation shown in your current game before choosing a numerical line height or assuming that an old setting works identically. A high line is not automatically better: it requires defenders who can recover, a goalkeeper comfortable outside the box and enough stamina to repeat pressure.
Balance the two settings
Build-Up Style and Defensive Approach should tell the same tactical story. A direct build-up paired with a deep block can be sensible for counterattacks, but it may leave your midfield disconnected if the forwards cannot hold the first pass. A high press with a slow build-up can also create gaps if your team loses the ball before support arrives. Set both controls, then play enough minutes to see whether the team reaches the intended areas together.
Assign player Roles and Focuses
Roles describe a player’s job in the shape; Focuses adjust the emphasis within that job. They influence width, chance creation and pressure rather than acting as isolated statistical boosts. Assign them by asking what the team needs from that position, not simply which option sounds most attacking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

FC 26 adds four roles:
- Ball-Playing Keeper: a goalkeeper role intended to support distribution and possession from the back.
- Wide Back: a full-back role that emphasizes contribution in wide areas.
- Inverted Wingback: a wide defender who can move inside to help the midfield structure.
- Box Crasher: a role for a player who makes more assertive runs toward the penalty area.
The game also adds a Versatile Focus. FC 26 makes roles less restrictive, adds more available positions and uses role familiarity more flexibly. It also reduces the penalty for being out of position. That does not mean every player can perform every job equally well: attributes, work rate, preferred foot, stamina and familiarity still affect the result.
Build assignments around the formation
In a possession-oriented shape, you might use an Inverted Wingback to add a central passing option while a wide midfielder holds the flank. In a counterattacking shape, a Wide Back can preserve width and release the ball quickly to a forward. A Box Crasher may add a late runner, but assigning several aggressive runners at once can remove the midfield cover you need after losing possession.
These are starting combinations, not guaranteed winning formulas. A role that works for a mobile midfielder may be poor for a slower player with limited stamina. Check the player’s familiarity indicator and test whether the movement creates a useful passing lane or simply vacates a dangerous area.

Use Focus to solve a specific problem
Pick the Focus that addresses what is missing from the team:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose a more defensive emphasis when the full-back or midfielder must protect a vulnerable side.
- Choose a progressive or attacking emphasis when the team reaches the final third without enough runners.
- Use Versatile when you want a less rigid interpretation of the role and the player has the attributes to adapt.
Do not give every player the most aggressive Focus. A stable tactic normally needs a mixture of players who advance, players who connect play and players who remain in position when the ball is lost.
Career Mode: Tactical Vision and role familiarity
FC 26 Career Mode removes the former requirement that Player Roles must match a Tactical Vision. You can customize the setup for your squad and preference instead of being blocked by a role mismatch.
Familiarity still matters. EA’s example is a possession-oriented striker who can use False 9 or Poacher, with the role that fits the coach’s vision receiving a familiarity boost. Treat that as added flexibility, not proof that every available role performs identically. If two roles are tactically viable, the familiar one may provide the more reliable behavior.
Presets are designed to be compatible with available formations. EA warns that Custom Presets can become incompatible after several changes. If the game reports a mismatch, check whether a role, position or team setting no longer fits the selected formation, then remove the conflicting change or choose a compatible preset as a new base.

FC 25 codes are compatible with FC 26 and are converted when applied. After loading an older code, inspect the formation, roles, Focuses and team controls rather than assuming the conversion preserved every behavior exactly. Save the converted version as a new code once you are satisfied.
Test the tactic before judging it
A tactic can look correct in the menu and still create poor spacing in play. Test one change at a time so you know which setting caused an improvement or a new weakness.
- Check the defensive shape. Lose possession deliberately and watch whether the intended number of players protects the centre and both flanks.
- Check the first pass. From the goalkeeper or centre-backs, identify whether at least two safe options appear. If not, lower the risk of the build-up or alter a nearby Role.
- Check progression. See whether the midfield and forwards move into different lanes instead of occupying the same channel.
- Check transition coverage. Attack with the tactic, then observe who remains behind the ball when a pass is intercepted.
- Check stamina. An aggressive approach can drain players earlier, making the same press ineffective late in the match.
- Save a revision. Duplicate the tactic before major edits so you can return to the previous version.
How to compare two custom tactics
When deciding between setups, compare the same dimensions rather than relying on a single match result:
| Dimension | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Defensive line and risk | How much space is left behind the defence, and can the defenders recover? |
| Build-up speed | Does the team advance at the tempo you can control, or does it force rushed passes? |
| Width and coverage | Do formation and Roles protect the wings while keeping a central outlet? |
| Role suitability | Do the players have the familiarity, attributes and stamina for their assignments? |
| Endurance | Can the team maintain its pressure and runs for the full match? |
| Attack and defence balance | Does the shape create enough final-third options without losing protection after turnovers? |
EA’s FC 26 tactical breakdown summarizes setups through six dimensions: Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length and Endurance. Use those categories as a checklist, but judge them against your own squad and play style rather than treating a high displayed value as universally better.

The following templates illustrate how to think about relationships between settings. They are not claims that one formation or role combination is the best for every player.
Controlled possession
- Choose a formation that gives the centre-backs and midfielders several short outlets.
- Use a patient Build-Up Style.
- Keep the Defensive Approach balanced enough to protect against a lost pass.
- Assign one player to hold position, one to connect play and only selected players to make forward runs.
This approach suits a squad that values passing angles and can resist pressure without forcing the ball forward.
Recommended Free Tools
Direct counterattack
- Choose a shape with clear wide or forward outlets.
- Use a more direct Build-Up Style.
- Use a deeper or balanced defensive approach if your defenders are vulnerable to balls in behind.
- Give the quickest forwards permission to attack space while retaining at least one midfielder to support the second ball.
The trade-off is that you may concede possession and spend longer defending if the first forward pass fails.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
High-pressure recovery
- Use a formation that keeps enough players near the ball to press in pairs or triangles.
- Choose a high or aggressive Defensive Approach only if the squad has the stamina and recovery speed for it.
- Use progressive Roles selectively so that the press does not leave the centre completely open.
- Keep a fallback option for matches in which the opponent repeatedly escapes the first wave.
This setup can create turnovers near goal but carries the clearest risk of fatigue and exposed space.
Common problems and fixes
The tactic cannot be applied
Check the formation first, then inspect positions and Roles for incompatibilities. A Custom Preset can become invalid after multiple edits. Revert the last change, duplicate a compatible preset or assign players to positions supported by the formation.
The team is too open after losing the ball
Lower the defensive risk, keep a midfielder or defender on a holding Role and avoid assigning too many Box Crashers or other forward-running jobs. Re-test the transition rather than judging only the attacking phase.

Reduce the intensity of the Defensive Approach or reserve the aggressive tactic for selected match situations. Review stamina as part of the tactic, not as an afterthought.
Players do not make the expected runs
Confirm that the formation provides the relevant position, then inspect the player’s Role, Focus and familiarity. A role may be technically available but poorly suited to that player’s attributes or to the neighboring assignments.
