The party controls described by Square Enix are single-player commands: you control the active hero and issue orders to AI-controlled allies. There is no documented menu for adding a second player, assigning an ally to another controller, or sharing a party between two people.
You can still configure a controller, remap supported inputs, customize some keyboard bindings, and direct your companions efficiently in combat. On PC, an unofficial mod can add extra keyboard-and-mouse options, including a way to switch the selected party leader, but it requires a separate loader and DLL and should not be treated as an official co-op feature.

Can Final Fantasy VII Remake be played in co-op?
The practical answer is no documented co-op setup. The official game-system descriptions explain how one player opens command menus, uses shortcuts, and gives orders to allies. They do not describe a second-player join screen, a two-controller assignment, or a mode in which another person directly controls a party member.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction matters because “party control” can sound like multiplayer control. In Remake, an ally can be selected through the combat command interface and told to use an ability. The game still treats that character as an AI-controlled member of your party. Issuing an order is not the same as handing the character to another human player.

What the documented controls do provide
- One player controls the current combat character.
- Opening the command menu slows time when Wait Mode is active, giving you time to choose an ability or item.
- Command shortcuts can be assigned to buttons for faster use.
- L2 and R2 open command menus for allied characters so you can issue orders to them.
- On PC, the game supports compatible controllers as well as keyboard and mouse input.
What is not documented
| Requested feature | Documented support | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Add a second local player | Not stated in the official game-control material | There is no documented co-op activation sequence to follow. |
| Assign one party member to another controller | Not stated | A second connected controller should not be assumed to control an ally. |
| Give an ally to a second keyboard or mouse | Not stated | Keyboard remapping changes your input device; it does not create a second player slot. |
| Direct an AI ally through the command menu | Described by Square Enix | This is a single-player party-management feature. |
The absence of a setup procedure in the documented material is not proof that nobody has experimented with unofficial tools. It does mean you should not expect a supported couch-co-op mode or troubleshoot a nonexistent in-game player-assignment menu.
Controller compatibility on PC
For the PC version, Square Enix states that FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE supports XInput- and DirectInput-compliant controllers. The examples named by Square Enix are Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 controllers. This is PC guidance; it should not automatically be applied to the PlayStation console versions.
Before you connect a controller
- Install the PC game and complete any platform or operating-system updates that are offered.
- Connect the controller before launching the game when possible. A wired connection is useful for eliminating wireless pairing and battery variables during setup.
- If you use a wireless pad, pair it with the operating system first and confirm that the operating system sees button presses.
- Close other remapping utilities temporarily. Multiple input layers can make a controller appear to have duplicate or incorrect buttons.
Basic PC setup procedure
- Connect a compatible XInput or DirectInput controller.
- Launch FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE.
- Open a save or the title-screen options and verify that the game responds to the controller.
- Open System, then Controller Layout, and choose Custom if you need to change the default arrangement.
- Test movement, camera control, confirm/cancel, the command menu, and the triggers before starting a difficult encounter.
The game may display prompts that correspond to the active input device. If the game responds but shows the wrong prompt style, check whether a desktop remapper or platform-level controller layer is translating the device.

DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 vibration on Steam
A pinned developer announcement dated June 30, 2022 says that DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 vibration functions are supported when Steam Input is deactivated in Steam’s controller settings. Treat that as the stated setup guidance, not a guarantee that every current driver, cable, Bluetooth adapter, or firmware combination will behave identically.
- Open the game’s controller settings in Steam.
- Locate the Steam Input option for the game.
- Deactivate Steam Input, as described in the developer announcement.
- Launch the game and test vibration in a safe area.
- If vibration disappears or the controller stops responding, restore the previous Steam Input setting and test a wired connection before changing more variables.
Disabling Steam Input is relevant to the vibration behavior described in that announcement. It does not add co-op or create a second-player slot.

Remap a controller in the game
Square Enix’s support guidance gives this path: System > Controller Layout > Custom. The same guidance warns that some inputs cannot be changed. The available menu labels can vary by platform, so use the path as a guide rather than assuming every console and PC build exposes identical entries.
Recommended remapping sequence
- Pause the game and open System.
- Select Controller Layout.
- Choose Custom.
- Select an action and assign the button that feels easiest to reach.
- Save or confirm the layout, then return to gameplay.
- Test the layout in a low-risk area, including the command menu and camera controls.
Plan around fixed inputs
Because some inputs cannot be changed, do not design a layout that depends on moving every action. Keep the controls you use under pressure—movement, camera, confirm/cancel, the command menu, guard or evade, and character commands—consistent enough that you can recover if a particular assignment is locked.
- If an action has no remap option, leave it in its default position and move a different, configurable action around it.
- After changing a trigger or shoulder-button assignment, test both ordinary combat and the ally command menus.
- Write down an unusual layout if more than one person uses the PC, because the profile is easy to forget after a reset or reinstall.
Customize keyboard and mouse keybinds
Square Enix support says that some actions can be rebound in the in-game Options menu, while other bindings cannot be changed. The support material does not establish a complete universal list of editable keys, so check the actual menu in your installed version rather than relying on a list copied from another platform.
Change available bindings
- Open the game’s Options menu.
- Go to the keyboard-and-mouse or controls section.
- Select the action you want to change.
- Press the replacement key or mouse button when prompted.
- Confirm the assignment and test it in gameplay.
Make changes in small groups. Change movement or camera input first, test it, and then adjust combat commands. If several actions are assigned to the same key, the menu should identify the conflict; if it does not, test every affected action before entering a mission.
Why a key may refuse to change
- The action is one of the bindings the game reserves.
- The replacement key is already assigned elsewhere.
- A platform overlay or desktop utility is intercepting the key.
- The change was made in a temporary profile and was not confirmed or saved.
Keyboard remapping improves single-player access and comfort. It does not split the party between two people.

Use the party command system in combat
Wait Mode and the command menu
When Wait Mode is active, opening the command menu slows time. This gives you a planning window to select an ability, spell, item, or other available command without pretending that combat has become turn-based. Enemies and battlefield conditions still matter, so use the pause in time to make a specific decision rather than leaving the menu open indefinitely.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The game lets you assign command shortcuts to buttons. Shortcuts are useful when you repeatedly use the same ability and do not want to navigate through multiple menu levels. Choose shortcuts that remain reachable while you are moving and watching the battlefield, then verify that the assignment does not conflict with a fixed input.
Issue orders to allies with L2 and R2
Square Enix’s system description says that L2 and R2 open ally command menus. From those menus, the single player can tell an AI-controlled companion to use an available command. This is the closest built-in feature to “party control,” but it is still not multiplayer control: the ally’s movement, targeting, positioning, and other behavior remain governed by the game until you switch to that character through the game’s own mechanics.
A practical combat-control routine
- Position the active character so the camera and target are readable.
- Open the command menu when you need a precise action.
- Use the ally command menu on L2 or R2 to queue a needed order for a companion.
- Use a shortcut for a frequently repeated command if you have assigned one.
- Close the menu and resume movement, watching whether the AI ally carried out the order.
If an ally appears unresponsive, check whether the command was available, whether the character was staggered, interrupted, out of range, or otherwise unable to perform it. A delayed or failed order is a combat-state issue, not evidence that another controller has taken over.
What happens if you connect a second controller?
Connecting another controller to a PC or console does not, by itself, establish a second player. The documented control information contains no player-join prompt or ally-assignment procedure. If both devices are active, the game may still treat one as the current input device, or the operating system and platform layer may compete over which device receives input.

Check the situation without mistaking it for co-op
- Disconnect the second controller and confirm that the primary controller works normally.
- Reconnect the second device and watch for an in-game “press a button to join” prompt. Do not assume that a prompt from the platform overlay belongs to Remake.
- Open the controller layout menu and see whether it lists one configurable device or a player-two slot. The documented setup provides the former, not the latter.
- Test the command menu and ally controls. If they still issue orders from one player’s interface, the game is operating in its documented single-player mode.
Troubleshoot controller and keybind problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No response from the controller | Pairing, cable, battery, or operating-system detection | Verify the device outside the game, reconnect it, and launch the game after detection. |
| Wrong button prompts | Steam Input or another remapper | Temporarily disable the extra translation layer and test again. |
| PlayStation vibration is missing | Steam Input setting | Use the June 30, 2022 guidance to test with Steam Input deactivated, then check connection and driver variables. |
| An action cannot be reassigned | Fixed game binding | Leave that input in place and move a different configurable action. |
| Keyboard change does nothing | Unsupported binding or conflict | Reopen Options, verify the action is editable, and test a key that is not already assigned. |
| Second controller does not control an ally | No documented player-two assignment | Use the ally command menus as a single player; do not expect a second-player slot. |
Use a controlled test after every change
- Change one setting only.
- Return to gameplay and test movement, camera, command-menu access, and one ally order.
- Record whether the result changed.
- Only then alter the next setting.
This approach prevents a Steam Input change, a remapped button, and a wireless reconnection from obscuring one another.

A Nexus Mods listing titled “Improved Keyboard and Mouse Controls” describes extra keybind options, including keys to switch the selected party leader during combat. It also describes map and minigame changes. The listing requires a separate Native Mod Loader and installation of a DLL.
That is an unofficial modification, not a built-in setup step. Its latest update shown is October 12, 2024, and current compatibility was not independently confirmed. Game updates, storefront builds, loaders, security software, and other installed modifications can all affect whether it works.
If you evaluate the mod
- Back up your saves and note the exact game version before installing anything.
- Read the mod listing’s current requirements and compatibility notes.
- Install the specified Native Mod Loader first, following its own instructions.
- Install the mod’s DLL exactly where its documentation requires; do not rename files or guess at folders.
- Launch the game without adding other variables and test the new keybinds in a safe save.
- Remove the DLL and loader if the game becomes unstable, input stops working, or an update makes the setup incompatible.
Even if leader switching works, it changes how one person selects or controls party members. It does not demonstrate that a second human can join, does not create a network session, and does not assign one controller to an AI ally.

You want reliable solo controller play
Use a supported XInput or DirectInput controller, configure it through System > Controller Layout > Custom, and leave unchangeable actions in their default positions. If you use a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 on Steam and want the vibration behavior described by the developer announcement, test with Steam Input deactivated.

You want a keyboard layout that fits your hand
Open the in-game Options menu, change only the actions the game exposes, and test each group of changes. Keep a written record of the final layout so you can restore it after a reset.
You want faster control of AI companions
Learn the Wait Mode command menu, assign practical shortcuts, and use L2 or R2 to open ally command menus. This gives you direct tactical orders without adding another player.
You want to experiment with party-leader switching on PC
Evaluate the unofficial mod only as a third-party experiment. Check its current requirements and compatibility first, back up saves, and remember that a leader-switch key is still a single-player control enhancement rather than co-op.
Bottom line on “co-op controls”
There is no documented procedure for setting up two-player co-op in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Configure one controller or keyboard-and-mouse setup, use the party command system to direct AI allies, and treat any PC mod that adds leader-switching or extra keybinds as an unofficial modification—not as a second-player feature.
