“Continuous YouTube music” can mean two different things: keeping music playing for yourself in YouTube Music, or broadcasting a live music stream to viewers on YouTube. For personal listening, use a station, album or playlist in the YouTube Music app; background play depends on your account’s plan benefits. For a public live broadcast, enable YouTube Live in advance and make sure you have the rights to every recording and composition you play.

A YouTube Music station is personal, radio-like playback—not a live broadcast from your channel. YouTube describes stations based on favorite songs, albums and artists, as well as playlist shuffle, as listening options. YouTube Music listening features can help you choose how to keep your own playback going.
Keep music playing for personal listening
Start a station, album or playlist
- Open the YouTube Music app and choose a station, album or playlist.
- For a playlist, use shuffle if you want the tracks played in a different order.
- To keep listening while using other apps or with the screen off, check the plan and playback benefits shown for your account in India.
Check background-play eligibility in India
Plan features and availability can change, so check your account rather than relying on an old price list or assuming that every plan includes music playback in the background. In its India announcement published on 12 March 2026, Google said Premium Lite background play and downloads were being rolled out for most videos. The announcement distinguishes that from YouTube Premium, which includes background playback for music content and YouTube Music Premium. Google’s India announcement explains the distinction; confirm current entitlements in your own account.
Premium Lite’s described rollout for most videos should not be treated as confirmation that it provides background playback for music content. If music with the screen off is the requirement, check the YouTube Premium and YouTube Music benefits available to your account.

Set up a viewer-facing live music stream
1. Enable live streaming before launch
If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable live access and complete phone verification ahead of the planned broadcast. YouTube for Artists advises enabling a first live stream at least 24 hours in advance. Its guidance gives the path Create (+) → Go live → Enable, followed by phone verification. 2. Choose a production method
You can use a simple mobile or webcam stream, or choose an encoder if you need more customization and control. YouTube for Artists describes the encoder as an option, not a requirement. The cited guidance does not establish a particular encoder, computer, audio interface, bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval or 24/7 configuration; do not treat generic values found elsewhere as official requirements for this setup.

3. Clear the rights to every piece of music
Before going live, make sure your channel has the necessary rights for every sound recording, composition and other third-party element in the broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies content, a placeholder may replace it; if the content remains, YouTube says the stream can be interrupted or terminated. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams before scheduling a broadcast.
4. Ask about Content ID allowlisting if you have a licence
A licence does not necessarily prevent an interruption. Ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be allowlisted through Content ID for the licensed music. YouTube warns that a live stream may still be interrupted when the channel has not been allowlisted, even if the creator has a licence.

5. Do not treat Creator Music as a live-stream licence
YouTube’s Creator Music usage details say that its tracks are for long-form videos, not live streams or Shorts. The same help page describes Creator Music as available to U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending; it is not an established music-licensing route for creators in India. 6. Check the terms for music you do not own
YouTube lists possible routes such as permission, a Creative Commons licence used according to its terms, public-domain material, or music from the YouTube Audio Library or Creator Music. These routes are not a guarantee against a Content ID claim or copyright strike. Copyright rules and exceptions vary by country, so confirm that a specific track and its intended use are covered before putting it in a public broadcast. Keep a continuous live stream running
Do-it-yourself broadcasting
The official guidance cited here covers enabling live access, choosing a production method and handling music rights; it does not specify a universal 24/7 setup or encoder settings. For a continuous broadcast using your own production system, select an encoder or other method that suits your source, follow its documentation for connecting to YouTube Live, and verify the stream with music you are authorized to broadcast. Do not assume that an ordinary short live session will automatically continue indefinitely: test your intended workflow, monitor it, and have a recovery plan for a dropped connection or interrupted stream.
Before scheduling a long broadcast, confirm live access is enabled, every track is cleared for the channel and use, any required Content ID allowlisting is in place, and your production method can recover from interruptions. No bitrate, stream-duration limit or fixed encoder configuration is established by the cited official guidance for this article.

Troubleshoot before the next broadcast
- Live access is not available: use the channel’s Create (+) → Go live path, enable access and complete phone verification. For a first stream, allow at least 24 hours for enablement.
- The stream is interrupted after music starts: check YouTube’s live copyright guidance and review whether the channel has rights for the recording and composition. If a rights holder licensed the track, ask whether Content ID allowlisting is required.
- A licensed track still triggers a problem: contact the rights holder about allowlisting; a licence alone may not prevent a live interruption.
