How to Set Up Co-Op in BioShock (and What BioShock 2 Multiplayer Actually Does)

You cannot set up supported co-op for the BioShock story campaigns. The original BioShock and BioShock Infinite were released without multiplayer, and BioShock 2 keeps its multiplayer as a separate competitive mode rather than a way for two people to advance through the campaign together. There is no campaign invite, split-screen option, or co-op networking procedure to enable in the games or in BioShock: The Collection.

Can you play BioShock co-op?

If “co-op” means playing the story with a friend, the answer is no for the supported versions covered by the official descriptions and historical documentation. The single-player campaigns are designed for one player, and none of the cited games provides a campaign lobby, partner slot, or story-progress synchronization.

The original game was reported as having no multiplayer, and BioShock Infinite was likewise reported as not featuring multiplayer. You can read the historical coverage of those decisions in GameSpot’s report on the original BioShock and its report on BioShock Infinite.

That means there is no supported setup sequence such as selecting a host, inviting a second account, choosing a difficulty for two players, or enabling a co-op toggle. Controllers, a headset, a second copy, or a faster connection cannot add a mode that the game does not provide.

Which BioShock games have multiplayer?

Game or edition Story co-op Other multiplayer What the documentation establishes
BioShock (original) Not available Not available Historical reporting says the game shipped without multiplayer.
BioShock 2 (original release) Not available Separate multiplayer mode The PC manual tells players to leave the single-player experience and launch Multiplayer; 2K described combat and matchmaking.
BioShock Infinite Not available Not available Historical reporting says multiplayer was not included.
BioShock: The Collection Not available Do not assume access to the original BioShock 2 multiplayer Official PlayStation and Epic listings describe the included games and single-player content; they do not promise co-op or restore the legacy multiplayer service.

The important distinction is between a multiplayer mode and a cooperative campaign. BioShock 2’s original multiplayer does not let two players move through the single-player story, share objectives, revive one another in the campaign, or carry progress between players.

What BioShock 2 multiplayer actually is

A separate mode, not a campaign option

The BioShock 2 PC manual describes Multiplayer as something launched separately from the single-player experience. In practical terms, finishing or starting the story does not open a two-player version of the same missions. You leave the single-player portion and enter a distinct multiplayer area.

Combat and matchmaking

In its announcement, 2K described BioShock 2 multiplayer as combat across Rapture locations with matchmaking. That description supports competitive multiplayer, not cooperative story progression. It does not establish a shared campaign, campaign checkpoints for a party, or a friend-only co-op lobby.

Why the wording causes confusion

Because the mode is attached to BioShock 2, players sometimes describe any two-player activity as “BioShock co-op.” That shorthand changes the answer. If you want to play the narrative together, BioShock 2 does not provide it. If you are asking whether an original release included a separate multiplayer component, the answer is yes, but it is not the story campaign.

How to check what you own before trying to connect

Use this checklist before following old multiplayer instructions. It prevents the most common mistake: treating a remastered collection or a different platform edition as though it were the original BioShock 2 release.

  1. Identify the game. Write down whether the title is BioShock, BioShock 2, or BioShock Infinite. A collection’s name is not itself evidence that every historical mode is included.
  2. Identify the edition. Separate the original BioShock 2 release from BioShock: The Collection. The official collection pages for PlayStation and the Epic Games Store emphasize the included single-player games and related story content; they do not advertise campaign co-op.
  3. Identify the platform. Record the console or PC storefront and the exact product listing. Legacy-mode availability can differ by platform and edition.
  4. Decide which activity you mean. “Play the story together” requires campaign co-op, while “enter a multiplayer match” refers to BioShock 2’s separate historical mode. They are different requirements.
  5. Check the title’s own available menus. On an original BioShock 2 installation, a Multiplayer entry would represent the separate mode described by the manual, not a co-op conversion of the campaign. Do not infer that a multiplayer menu means story missions support two players.

What you should expect on each game

Original BioShock

Plan on a single-player campaign. There is no supported co-op setup to perform, and adding a second controller or account will not create a partner slot. The historical report linked above is specifically about the absence of multiplayer in the original game.

BioShock 2

The original release is the exception in this series because it had a separate multiplayer mode. Treat it as its own activity: multiplayer combat and matchmaking, outside the single-player experience. It does not provide cooperative story missions.

Do not assume that an old manual or announcement proves that matchmaking is operating today. The cited material documents what the original release offered; it does not verify current service status on every console, PC storefront, region, or edition.

BioShock: The Collection (Nintendo Switch)
  • BioShock: The Collection contains all three games within this critically acclaimed franchise
  • BioShock Remastered - Explore the undersea city of Rapture, a haven for society's greatest minds
  • BioShock 2 Remastered - See Rapture through the eyes of Subject Delta
  • BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition - Private investigator Booker DeWitt must take on an impossible task

BioShock Infinite

There is no supported multiplayer or campaign co-op path. The historical report linked above says multiplayer was not part of the game, so there is no friend invite or network setup that turns its story into a two-player session.

BioShock: The Collection

The collection packages the BioShock games and their single-player material. Its official listings do not say that purchasing the compilation unlocks campaign co-op, nor do they establish that it restores BioShock 2’s original multiplayer matchmaking. Buying the collection therefore is not a co-op solution.

Why common “setup” instructions fail

Looking for a co-op toggle

There is no documented campaign setting to enable. Searching every options screen cannot reveal a feature that was not shipped. If the goal is story co-op, stop at the compatibility check rather than changing controller, audio, or network settings.

Trying to invite a friend from the campaign

A campaign save belongs to one player’s single-player session. The available documentation does not describe a campaign invite flow, a second-player loadout, or shared checkpoints. An invite, if an edition exposes one for a separate multiplayer mode, should not be interpreted as an invitation into the story.

Rank #4

Assuming two controllers mean split-screen

Connecting a second controller does not add split-screen support. No cited source documents local co-op, split-screen campaign play, or a second-player setup for any of the listed games.

Using collection instructions for the original game

Instructions written for the original BioShock 2 multiplayer can be wrong for a collection edition. Verify the product listing and platform first. The collection’s official descriptions focus on single-player content and do not promise the legacy multiplayer component.

Assuming an old matchmaking announcement proves current access

The 2K announcement establishes what BioShock 2 multiplayer was designed to do, not whether its matchmaking servers or platform services are available now. Current access was not established for each platform. Treat present-day availability as an edition- and platform-specific question.

  1. If your goal is the story with a friend: BioShock has no supported setup. Choose a different game that explicitly lists campaign co-op rather than trying to unlock it through settings.
  2. If you own original BioShock 2 and want its standalone multiplayer: Confirm the platform and edition, then look for the separate Multiplayer mode described in the manual. A visible menu is evidence that the installed build contains that component; it is not evidence of campaign co-op.
  3. If you own BioShock: The Collection: Use the official store listing for your platform to confirm included content. Do not buy the collection expecting a co-op campaign or guaranteed access to original BioShock 2 matchmaking.
  4. If an old guide tells you to invite a campaign partner: Disregard that step unless it is explicitly documenting a separate, currently supported product or mode. The cited BioShock documentation does not provide such a campaign procedure.

Platform and availability caveats

BioShock 2’s multiplayer history and its present availability are separate questions. The manual and 2K announcement document the original feature, but they do not confirm that matchmaking works today on every platform. Service status can depend on the platform network, the edition installed, regional availability, and whether the product is the original release or a remastered collection.

For that reason, avoid promises such as “the servers are online,” “all versions support multiplayer,” or “the collection includes the mode” unless the store and platform documentation for your exact product says so. The reliable conclusion for the campaign remains unchanged: no supported BioShock story co-op setup exists.

What is and is not possible

  • Possible: Play the BioShock, BioShock 2, or BioShock Infinite story as a single-player experience.
  • Possible in the original BioShock 2 release: Enter a separate multiplayer mode described as combat with matchmaking, subject to the platform and edition you own and any current service limitations.
  • Not supported: Two players advancing through BioShock story missions together.
  • Not established: Current legacy matchmaking availability for every platform and edition.
  • Not a solution: Buying BioShock: The Collection solely to obtain campaign co-op or guaranteed original BioShock 2 multiplayer.

Bottom line for “How do I play BioShock co-op?”

There is no co-op setup for the BioShock story campaigns. The original BioShock and BioShock Infinite have no multiplayer, while the original BioShock 2 includes a separate multiplayer mode that is not cooperative campaign play. The official collection listings do not add co-op or guarantee the legacy BioShock 2 mode. Check your exact platform and edition before attempting any standalone multiplayer, and do not expect a friend invite, split-screen setting, or campaign lobby to appear.
