Set up YouTube’s stream destination and key, configure OBS for a supported encoder profile, test the actual cloud workload and network, and plan separate recovery and recording. This guide covers the do-it-yourself setup; if you would rather not maintain a cloud computer, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only alternative that loops uploaded videos from its cloud service.
What you need before setting up cloud-hosted OBS
- A cloud VM with an operating system and remote access on which you can install and operate OBS Studio. OBS lists baseline system requirements, but those alone do not establish that a particular VM can encode your chosen stream reliably: encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect workload. See the OBS system requirements.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Your stream URL and stream key from YouTube. The key is sensitive: YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address. Do not share it or expose it in screenshots, logs, or public configuration.
- A stable, sustained network path from the VM to YouTube’s ingest service, with enough usable upload capacity for the bitrate you configure.
- A plan for restarts, dropped connections, and recordings. YouTube may not capture a live stream longer than 12 hours as a complete archive.
This is an OBS encoder workflow, not a cloud-provider deployment recipe. The available official OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish a suitable VM size, GPU requirement, provider, operating-system image, or cloud firewall configuration for every workload. Validate those details with your provider and the actual stream profile you intend to run.
1. Create or select the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a live stream or select an existing one.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream’s settings. If OBS offers YouTube as a service, you may be able to enter the key there; for a custom destination, you will need the server URL supplied by YouTube as well.
- Check the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube supports these controls, but do not assume they are enabled or behave as you intend; confirm the selected settings in Live Control Room.
- If the key is exposed or you suspect someone else has it, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the stored key in OBS. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send a feed to your stream.
For the platform’s current controls, see YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
2. Install and connect OBS on the cloud VM
- Install OBS Studio on the cloud VM using the OBS instructions for its operating system. Connect to the VM using your provider’s remote-access method.
- Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream.
- Choose YouTube if it is available in the service list, then enter the stream key. If you are using a custom destination, enter YouTube’s server URL and the matching key.
- Click Apply and OK, then create or select the scenes and sources you need. Confirm that the video and audio sources are actually present in the cloud session; sources that depend on your local computer will not automatically appear on the VM.
The OBS Studio overview documents the service, server, and key fields and recommends testing scenes and settings before broadcasting.

3. Configure OBS output for YouTube
Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec together
Set the output resolution and frame rate to the stream you want viewers to receive, then choose a bitrate from YouTube’s row for that exact codec and mode. Do not assume a bitrate suitable for one resolution or frame rate will suit another. YouTube’s current encoder table recommends H.264 ingest at 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; other modes and codecs have their own values. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the specific output you select.
Use the recommended rate control and keyframe interval
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. In OBS, configure the output encoder accordingly, and confirm the selected codec and output mode match the values you looked up in YouTube’s table. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard RTMP-family ingest. Its Live Control Room detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming source into multiple playback formats.

Check whether the VM can encode this workload
A VM that meets a basic compatibility requirement may still fail to encode your particular scenes and output smoothly. The load depends on the encoder type, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Test the complete OBS scene collection and intended output profile on the chosen VM rather than treating a generic system requirement or a provider’s VM label as proof of capacity. The OBS system requirements explain the distinction between basic compatibility and workload needs.
4. Test the stream before relying on it
- Start the stream from OBS while the YouTube broadcast is prepared in Live Control Room.
- Wait for YouTube to receive the feed and show a preview before making the broadcast public or relying on it for a scheduled event.
- Check moving video, audio levels, synchronization, and the stream-health indicators. Confirm the stream is not merely connected but delivering the content you expect.
- Leave the test running long enough to expose problems that occur after startup, including unstable network conditions or an overloaded encoder.
- If you have designed a backup encoder, test a real failover in advance and confirm what viewers see and how the primary feed resumes. YouTube recommends setting up encoders early and testing backup-encoder failover where redundancy is used.

5. Plan recovery and a separate archive
A 24/7 live session is not a guaranteed complete YouTube recording
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. A stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a dependable full-length archive. If keeping the complete program matters, use an independent recording or retention method and test that it works in the cloud environment you actually use. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Decide how OBS and the VM recover
OBS running in a VM is not, by itself, a recovery plan. Decide how the process will be restarted if OBS exits, the VM reboots, or the network drops, and who can access the machine to investigate. Test recovery rather than assuming that a reconnect setting, VM restart policy, or backup encoder will preserve an uninterrupted viewer experience. The sources here do not verify a particular provider’s restart behavior or a universal configuration for it.

Troubleshooting common cloud OBS problems
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed
- Check the stream key and destination. Make sure the selected service is YouTube, or that the custom server URL and key both came from the intended Live Control Room stream. Replace the key in OBS if you reset it in YouTube.
- Check YouTube’s stream state. Confirm the selected stream is ready to receive an encoder feed and that auto-start settings match the behavior you expect.
- Check the VM’s outbound connection. A VM or network policy can prevent OBS from reaching the ingest service. Provider-specific firewall and routing details are outside the scope of the general OBS and YouTube guidance; check the provider’s network controls.
OBS reports dropped frames or the stream stutters
OBS identifies an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate above the available stable upload capacity as common causes. Reduce bitrate if needed, using the appropriate YouTube row for your chosen codec and video mode, and investigate network instability between the VM and ingest server. Lowering bitrate can help when upload capacity is the constraint, but it does not repair an unstable route. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
The VM cannot keep up with encoding
Check whether the problem coincides with a demanding encoder choice, higher output resolution or frame rate, or complex scenes. Test a less demanding profile and simpler scenes, then validate the revised setup under sustained operation. Do not infer a VM’s capacity from its nominal specifications alone; the actual workload must be tested.

The stream works, but the archive is missing or incomplete
Check how long the broadcast ran. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams shorter than 12 hours; streams exceeding that duration may not be captured. Use an independent archive strategy when you need to retain a full 24/7 program.
