Chrome Remote Desktop lets you reach your own Mac, Windows PC, or Linux computer from another device, or let a helper control your screen for a single support session. For unattended access, install the host at remotedesktop.google.com/access, authorize it with your Google Account, assign a computer name, and create a strong PIN. For one-time help, use remotedesktop.google.com/support to generate a code that the person at the host must approve.
Google states that remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted. Encryption does not remove the need to secure your Google Account, protect the host PIN, approve support requests carefully, and disable hosts you no longer need.

Choose the right Chrome Remote Desktop mode
Chrome Remote Desktop has two distinct workflows. Selecting the wrong one can leave a computer permanently available when you only intended to provide temporary assistance.
| Characteristic | Remote access | Remote support |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Reach your own computer when nobody is present | Help another person interactively |
| Approval by someone at the host | Not required for each connection after setup | Required; the host reviews the helper and selects Share |
| Credential | Persistent host PIN, in addition to Google Account authentication | One-time access code |
| Duration | Until the host is disabled, the computer is offline, or access is otherwise revoked | Temporary; the host is asked to confirm continued sharing every 30 minutes |
| Revocation | Disable remote connections for the computer | Select Stop Sharing at any time; the code works once |
| Best fit | Your desktop, home computer, or work machine that you regularly need to reach | A technician, colleague, friend, or family member helping with a problem |
Use remote access only on computers you control and genuinely need to reach unattended. Use remote support when another person should approve the connection and watch the session.

What you need before setup
- A computer running macOS, Windows, or Linux for the host. Google documents host setup for all three platforms.
- Chrome installed and updated on the host and on the device you will use as the client.
- A Google Account authorized to configure the host.
- Reliable Internet connectivity on both ends.
- A way to keep the host powered on and connected when you expect to reach it remotely. Sleep, shutdown, a closed laptop lid, or a disconnected network can make an otherwise correct setup appear unavailable.
Clients can include another browser, a Chromebook, an Android device, or an iOS device. The host component is separate from the browser or mobile client: the computer you want to control needs the host installation, while the device you connect from needs access to the remote-desktop service or its companion client.
Set up unattended remote access
1. Open the host setup page
On the computer you want to access later, open Chrome and go to https://remotedesktop.google.com/access. Work on this computer first; opening the page only on your phone or travel laptop does not install the host on the computer you want to control.
2. Install the host component
Under Set up remote access, choose the download and installation option for Chrome Remote Desktop. Follow the operating system’s installer prompts. The browser component and the host service perform different jobs: the service allows the computer to accept an unattended connection after you have configured it.
Recommended Free Tools
On macOS or Windows, approve the requested installation and system permissions using an administrator account when your operating system asks for them. If your organization’s device-management software blocks the installer or screen-control permissions, a local user may not be able to complete setup without an administrator.
3. Authorize the host
Continue through the authorization prompts and sign in to the Google Account that should own the host entry. Treat this account as part of the security boundary. Anyone who can take over the account may be able to reach its registered computers, subject to the service’s additional checks and the host PIN.

4. Name the computer
Choose a name that identifies the physical machine without exposing unnecessary personal information. Names such as Office-Desktop or Home-Mac are easier to distinguish than a list of identical default names. If several computers are registered, a clear naming convention prevents you from connecting to the wrong host.
5. Create the host PIN
Create a unique, hard-to-guess PIN when prompted. Google documentation for Compute Engine describes the PIN as six digits; use the requirements displayed by the current Chrome Remote Desktop interface if they differ. Do not reuse a banking, email, device-unlock, or workplace code.
The PIN is not your Google Account password and is not the same as a support code. Store it in a password manager or another protected location, and do not send it through an untrusted channel. A person who has your account credentials but not the host PIN, or your PIN but not the required account access, may not have the complete set of credentials needed for a connection; protect both independently.
6. Confirm the host appears online
Finish setup and check the computer’s entry on the access page. Leave the host powered on, connected to the Internet, and configured not to enter a state in which the host service cannot respond. If the computer is not listed or shows as unavailable immediately, resolve that before testing from another device.
Connect from another computer
- On the second computer, open Chrome and visit https://remotedesktop.google.com/access.
- Sign in with the Google Account that can access the registered host.
- Select the computer by the name you assigned during setup.
- Enter the host PIN when requested and submit it.
- Wait for the remote session to open, then use the remote computer as if you were at its keyboard and screen.
Google says that remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted. Encryption protects the session in transit, but it does not make an unattended host safe to share broadly. Lock the local operating-system account when you finish, close sensitive applications before allowing another person to connect, and disconnect when the task is complete.

Remove or disable an unattended host
When a computer is retired, repurposed, sold, or no longer needs remote access, remove its standing availability. Return to https://remotedesktop.google.com/access, locate the computer, and choose Disable remote connections. This is more reliable than merely uninstalling a browser extension or deleting a desktop shortcut, because the host registration itself is what makes the computer available.
Also disable access before handing a machine to another person or sending it for repair. If the computer is lost or compromised, change the Google Account password, review account sessions and two-factor-authentication settings, and disable the affected host as soon as possible.
Provide one-time remote support
Use the support workflow when the person at the computer should approve and supervise access. It does not create a permanent host entry for the helper.
- On the computer that needs help, open Chrome and go to https://remotedesktop.google.com/support.
- Under the support section, select Generate Code.
- Send the displayed code to the helper using a channel you trust. The code is intended for this single support request.
- When the helper enters the code, review the helper’s displayed email address.
- Select Share only if that identity and the requested assistance are expected.
- Watch the session and select Stop Sharing as soon as the task is finished.
The access code will only work once. Google also says the host is asked to confirm continued sharing every 30 minutes. These prompts are a safeguard, not a reason to leave a support session unattended: stop sharing yourself when the helper is done, and never approve a request you did not initiate.
Understand the three credentials involved
Google Account authentication
Your Google Account identifies the person managing or initiating access. Protect it with a strong, unique password and two-factor authentication. In a work or school environment, the administrator may impose additional sign-in requirements.

Host PIN
The host PIN is the persistent credential created while configuring unattended access. It is used when connecting to that registered computer and should be unique to that host. It is not a temporary invitation and should not be given to a support technician for a one-off task.
One-time support code
The support code is generated for a specific help session. It expires after use and requires the person at the host to approve sharing. Generate a new code for a later session rather than attempting to reuse an old one.
Security hardening checklist
- Enable two-factor authentication: Turn it on for the Google Account that authorizes your hosts. This protects the account even if its password is exposed.
- Use a distinct PIN: Choose a hard-to-guess PIN and keep it private. Do not transmit it in an untrusted chat, email, or public ticket.
- Prefer support codes for occasional help: A one-time code and explicit host approval are safer for a technician or family member than leaving permanent access enabled.
- Review the helper identity: In support mode, verify the email address shown before selecting Share.
- Stop sharing promptly: Select Stop Sharing when the task ends instead of relying only on the 30-minute confirmation prompt.
- Disable unused hosts: Remove remote connections from machines that no longer need them, including old laptops and replaced desktops.
- Keep Chrome current: Updates include security fixes and can resolve compatibility problems between the browser, host component, and service.
- Limit local exposure: Lock the operating-system session when you step away and avoid leaving confidential documents open during support.
Linux-specific considerations
Linux hosts may require installation of the Debian package supplied by the Chrome Remote Desktop host setup. A graphical Linux installation can also need a file named .chrome-remote-desktop-session in the user’s home directory to select the desktop environment that should start for a remote session.
If the remote connection opens to a blank screen, immediately disconnects, or starts the wrong desktop, check the selected session in that file and confirm that the desktop environment is installed and available to the same user that configured the host. Distribution-specific display managers, Wayland versus X11 behavior, and permissions can affect the result, so follow the instructions for the Linux distribution and desktop environment in use rather than copying a session command intended for a different setup.

Organizations can enforce controls through Chrome Enterprise policies. Two relevant policy names are:
Best Value
| Policy | Purpose | Operational effect |
|---|---|---|
RemoteAccessHostRequireTwoFactor |
Requires two-factor authentication for remote-access hosts | Users must satisfy the organization’s additional authentication requirement when connecting to managed hosts |
RemoteAccessHostAllowClientPairing |
Controls PIN-less client pairing | The administrator can allow or prevent pairing behavior that would otherwise let a client avoid repeatedly entering the host PIN |
If a policy blocks sharing, pairing, installation, or sign-in, changing settings locally may not be possible. Contact the administrator and provide the exact policy or error shown. Do not try to bypass an organizational restriction by installing an unapproved remote-control tool.
Why Chrome Remote Desktop may not connect
The host is offline or missing
- Confirm the host computer is powered on and connected to the Internet.
- Open the access page on the host and verify that the computer still appears in the registered list.
- Check whether a recent operating-system update, sleep setting, VPN change, or security product stopped the host service.
- Make sure you are signed in to the Google Account that owns or can access the host.
The PIN is rejected
- Enter the PIN for the selected computer, not a Google Account password or an old PIN from another host.
- Check for keyboard-layout or number-entry issues and re-enter the digits carefully.
- If you suspect the PIN has been exposed, change it through the host’s configuration rather than continuing to share it.
- For a support session, do not enter a host PIN: generate a new one-time code on the support page instead.
The support code fails
- Generate a fresh code; Google says each access code works only once.
- Ensure the helper uses the current code and that the host has selected Share after reviewing the helper’s email address.
- If the 30-minute confirmation has elapsed or sharing was stopped, create and approve a new session.
Network traffic is blocked
Google’s troubleshooting guidance calls out the traffic needed for a connection: outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP port 443, and TCP/UDP port 3478 for STUN. A firewall, endpoint-security product, router rule, captive portal, VPN, or work/school network can block one or more of these paths.
- Verify ordinary Internet access on both devices by opening a known website.
- Update Chrome and the Chrome Remote Desktop host component.
- Temporarily inspect firewall and security-software logs for blocked Chrome Remote Desktop traffic, following your organization’s change-control rules.
- Check that outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 are permitted where your network policy allows it.
- Test from a different permitted network, such as a trusted home connection, to distinguish a host problem from a restrictive work or school network.
- If the alternate network works, ask the network administrator whether remote-desktop sharing is blocked or whether the required traffic can be allowed safely.
Do not permanently disable firewall protection as a shortcut. Restore any temporary diagnostic change and document the approved rule if an administrator makes one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The remote screen is blank or behaves unexpectedly
- On Linux, verify the desktop-session configuration and the installed desktop environment.
- On macOS or Windows, confirm that Chrome Remote Desktop has the screen-recording, accessibility, or other permissions requested by the operating system.
- Close and reopen the host service after installing updates, then test again.
- Check whether a local lock screen, fast-user switch, display-driver issue, or device-management policy is preventing interactive control.
A work or school account cannot share
Managed-account administrators may restrict remote access, support sharing, two-factor requirements, or client pairing. Ask the administrator whether the account or device is subject to a Chrome Enterprise policy before changing local settings.
A practical operating routine
For your own computers
- Register only the computers you expect to use remotely.
- Give each host a recognizable name and a unique PIN.
- Enable two-factor authentication on the authorizing Google Account.
- Keep the host online and Chrome updated.
- After use, disconnect and lock the local computer.
- Review the host list periodically and disable entries for retired or replaced devices.
For helping someone else
- Ask the person at the computer to open the support page themselves.
- Have them send the newly generated code through a trusted channel.
- Confirm that the displayed helper email address is correct before they select Share.
- Explain what you need to do and avoid opening unrelated private files.
- Have the host select Stop Sharing immediately when the repair or demonstration ends.
When to use another approach
Chrome Remote Desktop is a good fit when the devices can reach Google’s service, the host can remain available, and you want a browser-centered setup. It may not fit a tightly controlled enterprise network that blocks the required traffic, a computer that must remain powered off, or a support case where the administrator requires a different audited remote-access system. In those situations, resolve the network or policy constraint with the responsible administrator instead of weakening security controls.
