Start enrollment in the watch’s companion app, complete the carrier’s eSIM activation prompts, then test the watch away from the phone. Bluetooth- or Wi-Fi-only watches cannot be upgraded to cellular by adding a plan.
What you need before activation
Cellular setup is a compatibility check followed by an eSIM enrollment. A watch can look identical to a cellular model while lacking the radio and antenna required for mobile service, so verify the hardware before opening the companion app.

1. Confirm the exact watch model
- Find the full model name and size in the watch settings, packaging, or the manufacturer’s account page.
- Confirm that it is the cellular, LTE, or LTE + GPS version. A Bluetooth/GPS or Wi-Fi-only version cannot gain cellular service through software or a new plan.
- Check the model’s purchase region. Cellular watches use regional radio bands and certifications; a model bought in another country may not be accepted by a local carrier.
2. Separate cellular capability from 5G capability
“Cellular” usually means LTE service. It does not automatically mean 5G. Most smartwatch activation instructions are written for LTE, and a carrier may activate an LTE plan even when the watch has no 5G radio. Apple’s current setup documentation identifies Apple Watch Series 11 and later, Apple Watch SE (3rd generation), and Apple Watch Ultra 3 and later as able to connect to LTE and 5G where a participating provider offers 5G. Earlier Apple Watch generations are described as connecting to LTE and 3G. Do not assume that every cellular watch, every carrier plan, or every region supports 5G.
3. Check the phone, account, and country together
The same watch may be eligible with one account and rejected by another. Before troubleshooting an app screen, ask the carrier to confirm all of these items:

- Your phone line is active and, where required, on the same account as the watch.
- The account is eligible for smartwatch service. Prepaid, enterprise, older, and restricted account types may be excluded.
- The carrier offers the service in your country and at your address, with usable coverage where you expect to wear the watch.
- The plan supports the arrangement you want: number sharing, a separate watch line, family setup, or standalone service.
How watch numbers and plans work
A paired watch often uses the phone’s number for calls and messages, but the carrier still provisions a separate wearable line behind the scenes. A number displayed in the carrier account may be an internal billing or tracking number rather than a number that other people should dial. Plan behavior is a carrier feature, not a universal property of the watch.
| Arrangement | What the user experiences | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Number sharing | The paired watch and phone present the same reachable number for supported calls and messages. | The carrier may still create a separate line for billing and network management. |
| Dedicated watch line | The watch has its own mobile line and may operate independently of the phone. | Whether calls and messages use that line depends on the carrier and watch platform. |
| Family setup | A watch is configured for a family member who does not use the owner’s phone account in the ordinary way. | Only certain carriers, regions, and watch models support it. |
| Standalone service | The watch is activated without a paired phone line for normal use. | Some carriers prohibit standalone activation even when the hardware can technically operate alone. |
For example, Pixel Watch LTE documentation describes a separate line that shares the phone’s number after pairing. Google Fi’s covered smartwatch service is narrower: it requires an active Fi plan and paired Android phone and does not activate the watch as a standalone plan. Verizon’s Galaxy Watch instructions distinguish Number Share from standalone service, and a watch cannot use both modes at once.
Set up cellular on Apple Watch
Requirements and model limits
You need a cellular Apple Watch, an eligible plan with a participating carrier, and an iPhone connected to that provider during ordinary paired setup. Apple says the iPhone and watch generally must use the same provider. Apple Watch For Your Kids follows different participating-carrier rules. Some prepaid, enterprise, and older accounts are not supported, so ask the provider to check the account rather than assuming the app is malfunctioning.

There is no single Apple Watch cellular model that works worldwide. Models are optimized for the country or region where they are sold, so confirm regional compatibility before buying or importing one. For 5G, Apple states that connectivity requires a mobile plan with a participating network provider; an eligible watch alone is not enough.
Activate during or after pairing
- Turn on the iPhone and Apple Watch, keep them close together, and complete pairing if you have not already done so.
- On the iPhone, open the Watch app and select My Watch.
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile in some regional labels), then choose Set Up Cellular.
- Follow the carrier’s sign-in, address, plan-selection, and eSIM prompts. The carrier may redirect you to its account page or request an authorization code.
- When prompted, confirm the watch’s plan and any number-sharing or family option. Read whether the enrollment creates a separate billed line.
- Wait for the app to report that the plan is active. Leave the watch paired and connected to Wi-Fi or the iPhone’s network until the carrier finishes provisioning.
- Turn off Bluetooth or move away from the iPhone only after activation completes, then place a call or use a data app to test the watch over cellular.
If you are setting up a new watch, the cellular step can appear during the initial Apple Watch setup flow. Choosing it there leads to the same carrier enrollment, but the watch must still be a supported cellular model and the account must pass the carrier’s eligibility checks.
Apple Watch activation failures
When the cellular option is missing, verify the model and the carrier account first. A Wi-Fi-only watch, an unsupported regional variant, or an excluded prepaid or enterprise account will not be fixed by reinstalling the app. For a stalled enrollment, Apple recommends toggling Airplane Mode on both the iPhone and watch, turning it off again, and restarting both devices before contacting the provider. Give the carrier the watch identifier it requests and ask it to confirm that the eSIM provisioning order completed.

Set up cellular on Google Pixel Watch
What Pixel Watch LTE service provides
Google describes Pixel Watch cellular as 4G LTE. After pairing and activation, a compatible carrier setup lets the watch make calls and use apps away from the phone while sharing the phone’s number. The watch still requires a separate carrier line, even though the user-facing number can match the phone’s number.

- Pair the LTE Pixel Watch with the compatible Android phone and update the phone, watch, and Pixel Watch app.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app and look for the mobile or cellular setup option in the watch’s connectivity settings.
- Select your carrier and sign in when the carrier page opens. Use the carrier’s Pixel Watch instructions for your country; menu names and eligibility rules differ by provider.
- Approve the wearable line and number-sharing arrangement shown by the carrier. Check whether the line is billed separately from the phone plan.
- Complete any eSIM download or confirmation steps, then wait for the app and watch to show an active mobile plan.
- Move away from the phone, leave Wi-Fi, and test a call or data-connected app in an area with the carrier’s coverage.
Find the Pixel Watch EID
A carrier may request the watch’s EID during manual activation or support. On the watch, open Settings > Connectivity > Mobile > SIM status and read the EID exactly as displayed. Do not substitute the phone’s EID or IMEI; the carrier needs the identifier for the watch being provisioned.
Google Fi is a provider-specific example
Google Fi’s smartwatch requirements illustrate why a general Pixel Watch rule is unsafe. Its covered US models require an active Fi plan and a paired Android phone, along with other account and device conditions. Fi says its smartwatch service shares the phone number and cannot be activated as a standalone plan, and it lists geographic limitations. Other carriers may offer different arrangements.

Set up cellular on Samsung Galaxy Watch
Check the LTE model and phone prerequisites
Samsung’s cellular directions apply to an LTE Galaxy Watch and a carrier plan that supports that model. In the US activation path described by Samsung, the phone must run Android 5.0 or later, have at least 1.5 GB of RAM, and be connected through Wi-Fi or mobile data. Those are page-specific requirements that can change with software and carrier support; use the current instructions for your model and market.
Activate through Galaxy Wearable
- Pair the LTE watch with the phone and install available updates for both devices and Galaxy Wearable.
- Open Galaxy Wearable. Depending on the software version, choose Watch settings or Home > Mobile plans.
- Tap the option to add or activate a mobile plan and select the carrier shown for your region.
- Follow the provider’s enrollment page. Some carriers, including AT&T or Verizon in Samsung’s US guide, require a carrier-issued QR code.
- Scan the QR code only when the carrier instructs you, or enter the requested account credentials. A QR code may be tied to one activation and should not be reused after a reset or service change unless the carrier confirms that it remains valid.
- If requested, provide the watch’s EID, IMEI, or ICCID. On the watch, these identifiers are under Settings > About watch > Device.
- Wait for Galaxy Wearable to show the plan as active, then disable the phone connection or walk out of Bluetooth range and test the watch in a covered location.
Number Share versus standalone Galaxy Watch service
Verizon’s Galaxy Watch example offers two distinct paths. Number Share requires an active Verizon phone on the same account as the watch. Standalone service is a different mode and cannot be combined with Number Share. The guide also calls for coverage and, for one route, an activation QR code. Your carrier may name or restrict these options differently, so choose the mode before accepting the plan.

A platform-neutral activation checklist
Use this sequence when the manufacturer’s instructions and carrier portal divide the work between two apps:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Identify the hardware: record the exact model, cellular/LTE designation, country of purchase, and whether the model has documented 5G support.
- Confirm eligibility: ask the carrier to check the model, account type, phone line, region, coverage, and desired number-sharing or standalone arrangement.
- Prepare software and connectivity: update the phone, watch, and companion app; charge both devices; connect the phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data as the provider requires.
- Keep the devices paired: begin in the Apple Watch app, Google Pixel Watch app, or Galaxy Wearable rather than trying to add an eSIM from a generic phone settings screen.
- Complete the carrier flow: sign in, accept the wearable line, and follow the provider’s eSIM instructions. Supply the watch EID, IMEI, or ICCID only when requested.
- Use QR codes carefully: scan a carrier-issued code once and do not reuse it after resetting the watch or changing service without confirmation from the provider.
- Verify before testing: wait for an active-plan status in the app and watch settings, then test away from the phone in an area with coverage.
Troubleshoot a missing or failed cellular activation
The cellular option does not appear
- Recheck that the watch is the LTE/cellular edition, not the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi edition.
- Confirm that the phone and watch are paired in the manufacturer’s app and that both have current software.
- Ask the carrier whether the exact model and regional variant are supported. A watch purchased abroad can be incompatible even when the same product name is sold locally.
- Check whether prepaid, enterprise, older, family, or other account restrictions exclude wearable lines.
The carrier rejects the plan or number-sharing request
Ask which arrangement the account supports. A provider may require the phone and watch to share an account, require a separate wearable line, or prohibit standalone service. Pixel Watch service on Google Fi, for example, cannot be activated as standalone service, while Verizon documents separate Number Share and standalone Galaxy Watch paths. Do not select a different option merely to make the screen advance; it may create the wrong line or fail later.
Activation is stuck at eSIM download
- Keep the phone on a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile connection and keep the watch nearby and paired.
- Check that the carrier account credentials and security verification are correct.
- Restart the phone and watch. Apple specifically recommends toggling Airplane Mode on both devices and then restarting when activation stalls.
- Retry only after the carrier confirms that the previous enrollment did not complete. Repeated attempts can create duplicate or pending orders.
The carrier asks for an identifier
Read the identifier from the watch, not from the phone. Pixel Watch EID: Settings > Connectivity > Mobile > SIM status. Galaxy Watch EID, IMEI, or ICCID: Settings > About watch > Device. Apple and other platforms may display the required identifier in the watch app or device information screen. Type every character exactly and keep the identifier private when sharing screenshots.
The plan shows active but the watch has no service
- Move outside, check the carrier’s coverage, and wait several minutes for the network registration to finish.
- Confirm that the watch is not still relying on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi; temporarily disable those connections for a clean cellular test.
- Restart the watch after the carrier reports activation complete.
- Check the plan status again in the companion app. If it is active but the watch still cannot register, contact the carrier with the model and EID/IMEI/ICCID and ask it to reprovision the wearable line.
Choosing between LTE and 5G service
For ordinary calls, messaging, notifications, and app data, LTE support is the baseline used by most smartwatch activation guides. Choose a 5G-capable model only when the manufacturer identifies 5G for that generation, your carrier offers compatible 5G smartwatch service, and the service is available in your region. A 5G-capable watch can still fall back to LTE when 5G coverage or plan support is absent.
Do not treat a carrier’s phone 5G coverage map as proof that its smartwatch plan supports 5G. Verify the wearable plan separately. Apple’s documented 5G requirement is a participating network provider and an eligible plan; the cited Pixel Watch documentation describes 4G LTE, and Samsung’s activation guidance is framed around LTE.
What to verify before buying a cellular watch or plan
| Decision point | Why it changes the setup | Question to ask the carrier or manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| Radio and model | Only cellular hardware can connect; 5G is not guaranteed by an LTE label. | Is this exact model and regional variant supported, and does it support 5G on this network? |
| Country and carrier | Watch radios and carrier approvals vary by market. | Can this watch be activated at my address and in the country where it was purchased? |
| Phone and pairing | Companion apps and operating-system requirements differ. | Which phone OS, app version, and pairing arrangement are required? |
| Plan structure | Number sharing, a separate line, family setup, and standalone service are different products. | Will the watch share my number, receive its own line, or require a paired phone? |
| Account eligibility | Prepaid, enterprise, older, and restricted accounts may be excluded. | Is my current account eligible without changing account type? |
| Coverage and price | Service and cost are carrier-specific and can change. | What is the current wearable-plan price, recurring charge, activation fee, and coverage for this exact option? |
| Activation method | Some providers use an app flow; others require account login, an EID/IMEI, or a QR code. | What identifier or QR code will I need, and does it remain valid after a reset? |
When to contact the carrier
Contact support after you have confirmed the model, account, coverage, and companion-app connection, or sooner if the carrier portal reports an eligibility error. Have the watch model, purchase region, phone number, account email, and requested EID/IMEI/ICCID ready. Describe whether you are requesting number sharing, a separate line, family setup, or standalone service. Ask support to confirm the eSIM provisioning state rather than simply repeating the enrollment.
Carrier screens, eligible models, 5G availability, plan names, and prices change. Verify the exact terms immediately before activation; the documented requirements and menu labels are current guidance, not a guarantee that every provider uses the same flow.
