How to set up Cambridge Audio L/R X speakers for the best stereo sound

For the best stereo result from Cambridge Audio L/R X, complete the primary speaker’s network setup in the StreamMagic app, link the second speaker, verify which cabinet is left and right, and place the pair as free-standing speakers before changing EQ. Then use StreamMagic’s Room Acoustics controls for your room, make small balance and seven-band EQ adjustments, and add DynamEQ only if quiet listening makes bass and treble seem diminished. The pair is designed to play full range, so a subwoofer is optional rather than a requirement.

The practical order matters: a wrong left/right assignment, unstable network link or poor placement cannot be fixed reliably with tone controls. The Cambridge Audio manual provides app paths and input requirements, but it does not prescribe one universal speaker spacing, wall clearance or toe-in angle. Treat placement as an incremental, symmetrical listening adjustment for your room.

What you need before starting

  • Two Cambridge Audio L/R X speakers and access to a mains outlet for each.
  • A home router. Use a Category 5/5E straight-through Ethernet cable for a wired network setup, or have the Wi-Fi password ready.
  • The StreamMagic app on your phone or tablet.
  • Either the supplied 5 m USB-C speaker-link cable or a reliable WiSA HT wireless link.
  • Your source equipment, such as a TV, turntable or streaming account, if you are connecting it during setup.

Keep the primary speaker close enough to the router for initial setup. If you intend to use Wi-Fi and the primary speaker is connected by Ethernet, unplug Ethernet before starting the wireless setup. The manual says L/R X does not support captive-portal networks, such as those that require a web page before granting access. It also advises avoiding powerline adapters and Wi-Fi extenders where possible because they can reduce connection reliability.

Complete network setup in StreamMagic

Ethernet setup

  1. Turn off or leave the primary speaker unpowered while you connect a Category 5/5E straight-through network cable from the router to the primary speaker.
  2. Power the primary speaker and wait for it to start.
  3. Open StreamMagic and choose the option to set up a new product.
  4. Follow the app prompts to identify the speaker and join it to your system.

Ethernet is the sensible first choice when the router is nearby or the Wi-Fi signal is inconsistent. It keeps the primary network path independent of wireless interference; the second speaker can still use the selected wired or wireless speaker-link method.

Wi-Fi setup

  1. Place the primary speaker within normal router range and disconnect any Ethernet cable.
  2. Power the speaker, open StreamMagic and select new-product setup.
  3. Choose your home Wi-Fi network, enter its password and complete the prompts.
  4. Wait for the app to confirm the speaker is on the network before moving it to its final position.

A hotel, apartment or public Wi-Fi login page is a captive portal and is not supported. If setup repeatedly fails, temporarily move the primary speaker closer to the router, remove Ethernet, disable a powerline adapter or extender, and retry. Once setup succeeds, return the speaker to the listening room and check that StreamMagic can still connect.

Give the system a useful name

During setup, assign a unique name such as “Living room stereo” rather than leaving a generic product name. StreamMagic, your network, streaming services and smart-home controls will use that name, making it easier to select the correct pair when more than one room has audio equipment.

Link the two speakers

Wireless WiSA HT linking

L/R X supports wireless WiSA HT speaker linking. Choose the wireless option in the app and follow its pairing instructions. Wireless linking leaves the speakers physically independent, which is useful when a cable would cross a walkway or the cabinets must be separated by furniture. Reliability still depends on the room and wireless conditions, so listen for dropouts after moving the speakers into their final positions.

Wired USB-C linking

The product package includes a 5 m USB-C speaker-link cable. Select the wired linking mode in StreamMagic and connect the two speakers with that cable. A wired link is the manufacturer’s practical alternative when wireless linking is unreliable. You do not automatically need to buy another cable; consider a replacement only if the supplied one is missing or damaged, and verify compatibility before ordering.

After either method connects, play a track and confirm that both cabinets produce sound. If only one plays, check the link mode, cable seating (for wired use), and the app’s speaker status before changing EQ.

Set the primary side and correct stereo balance

  1. In StreamMagic, open the L/R X system controls and choose whether the primary speaker is the left or right channel.
  2. Stand or sit at the intended listening position and play a recording with a centered vocal or other centered image.
  3. Use the app’s stereo output-level control to match the two speakers if one is noticeably louder.
  4. Use Balance in small steps if the image pulls left or right. Recheck the physical channel assignment before making a large adjustment.

A reversed channel assignment can make a familiar recording feel spatially wrong even when both speakers are equally loud. Balance should compensate for a modest room or seating asymmetry, not conceal a disconnected speaker, a faulty cable or a major placement difference.

Place L/R X for a stable stereo image

Start with the manual’s design assumption

“L/R X is tuned for large rooms with free-standing speakers.”

That sentence from the Cambridge Audio manual is the most specific placement guidance supplied for this model. It does not establish a universal distance from the rear wall, a required gap between cabinets, a stereo-triangle dimension or a toe-in angle. Avoid treating a number borrowed from another speaker as an L/R X requirement.

Use a repeatable placement process

  1. Put both speakers on stable, level supports with their tweeters at approximately the same height relative to your ears.
  2. Keep the left and right positions as symmetrical as your room allows. Similar nearby surfaces help the two channels develop a comparable tonal balance.
  3. Face both speakers toward the listening area. If the center image is vague, make small, equal toe-in changes rather than turning one speaker independently.
  4. Move the pair together in small increments while replaying a centered vocal, a recording with a wide stereo spread and a track with sustained bass.
  5. Stop when the center image is stable, instruments are not obviously pulled toward one cabinet and bass does not change dramatically with a small head movement.

This is an adjustment method, not a manufacturer-measured optimization procedure. Keep notes of each move so you can return to the best position instead of relying on memory.

Use Room Acoustics controls after placement

  1. Open the L/R X controls in StreamMagic and enable Room Acoustics.
  2. Set the room-size slider to the closest description of your actual room.
  3. Set the placement slider to reflect how freely the speakers stand in the room rather than choosing a setting that merely sounds louder.
  4. Use the room-surface compensation control if the room sounds excessively bright or dull. Make one change at a time and allow a familiar recording to play before judging it.

These controls account for broad room behavior; they do not replace symmetrical placement or channel-level checks. If a wall, window or large reflective surface makes one side very different from the other, solve as much of that mismatch as practical physically before relying on Balance.

Set EQ and DynamEQ without masking setup problems

Seven-band EQ

Once placement, linking and balance are correct, use the seven-band EQ for modest tonal changes. Start from a flat or factory preset, change only one or two bands, and compare with several recordings. Excessive boosts can make the sound bright, boomy or fatiguing and can hide a level mismatch that should be corrected with Balance.

DynamEQ for quiet listening

The manual describes DynamEQ as compensation for the reduced perception of bass and treble at lower volume. Its intensity is adjustable. Enable it when quiet evening listening sounds thin compared with your normal level, then reduce the intensity if bass becomes dominant or vocals lose clarity. DynamEQ is a listening-level preference, not evidence that the speakers need additional amplifier power.

Connect common sources correctly

Television

Use HDMI eARC when your television and L/R X support it. If you use optical, set the TV’s digital-audio output to PCM stereo. L/R X does not support multichannel audio, so a TV set to Dolby Digital, DTS or another multichannel format may produce silence or an incompatible signal. The manual describes optical PCM operation and does not recommend TOSLINK at 192 kHz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turntable

An MM-cartridge turntable without an integrated phono stage can connect directly to the L/R X MM Phono input. Attach the turntable’s ground wire to the speaker’s ground tab to reduce hum. If the turntable has an integrated phono stage, use a line-level input instead and follow the turntable’s line-output setting.

Network streaming

After network setup, the manual documents Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Deezer and Amazon Music, along with Google Cast and AirPlay. Service availability and features can vary by territory and may change, so the services visible in your StreamMagic app are the authority for your account and region.

Decide whether to add a subwoofer

With subwoofer output disabled, the L/R X pair plays its full frequency range. Add a subwoofer only for a specific room or listening need, such as wanting more low-frequency output at the seat or reducing the main speakers’ bass workload. It is not a prerequisite for a balanced stereo setup.

  1. Connect an active subwoofer with an RCA input to the L/R X subwoofer output.
  2. Enable subwoofer output in StreamMagic and set the subwoofer level conservatively.
  3. Choose a crossover in the app’s 20–250 Hz range, matching the setting to the subwoofer’s own controls and capabilities.
  4. Listen to bass lines and kick drums from the seating position. If bass sounds thin, hollow or partly cancelled, try phase inversion on the subwoofer.
  5. Enable the main-speaker high-pass filter when the subwoofer should handle frequencies below the selected crossover.
  6. Recheck level and phase after moving either the subwoofer or the main speakers.

Subwoofer integration is a system adjustment: level, phase and crossover interact with room modes and placement. A higher subwoofer level is not automatically deeper or more accurate.

Troubleshoot the most common setup problems

Symptom Likely check Action
StreamMagic cannot find the primary speaker Network path or Wi-Fi setup For Wi-Fi, unplug Ethernet; move the speaker nearer the router; avoid captive-portal networks, powerline adapters and extenders; retry new-product setup.
Only one cabinet produces audio Speaker link Confirm WiSA HT pairing or reseat the USB-C link cable, then check the app’s speaker status.
Center vocal appears on the wrong side Primary-side assignment Set the primary speaker to the physical left or right channel in StreamMagic and replay a centered recording.
Image is slightly louder on one side Room asymmetry or level mismatch Check placement and channel assignment first, then adjust Balance in small steps.
Sound is too bright or dull Room surfaces or Room Acoustics setting Enable Room Acoustics, select the appropriate room and placement settings, then try room-surface compensation before larger EQ changes.
Quiet listening sounds thin Normal low-level hearing balance Enable DynamEQ and adjust its intensity to taste; do not use it to correct a wiring or placement error.
TV is silent over optical Unsupported TV output format Set the television’s optical output to PCM stereo and avoid multichannel modes.
Turntable hums Missing ground connection or wrong input Ground an MM turntable without its own phono stage to the speaker’s ground tab; use a line input only when the turntable supplies line level.
Subwoofer bass is hollow Phase or crossover interaction Try phase inversion, then adjust level and crossover within the app’s 20–250 Hz range.

Final setup check

  • StreamMagic shows the intended system name and both speakers are online.
  • The primary side matches the physical left/right placement.
  • Both speakers play at similar levels before Balance is changed.
  • Room Acoustics reflects the room and free-standing placement, with room-surface compensation used only as needed.
  • EQ changes are modest and DynamEQ is enabled only for the listening level where it helps.
  • The TV outputs PCM over optical, or uses eARC where available.
  • The turntable uses MM Phono with its ground wire attached, or a line input when its phono stage is integrated.
  • Any subwoofer has its level, phase, crossover and main-speaker high-pass settings checked from the listening position.

Once these checks pass, leave the system unchanged for several listening sessions before making another adjustment. This prevents chasing short-term impressions and lets you identify whether a change actually improves the stereo image in your room.
