How to Set Up Bluehost’s MCP Server with Claude, ChatGPT, and Other AI Assistants

Bluehost’s remote MCP server is available at https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp. To connect it, choose the setup path for your AI assistant, complete Bluehost’s authorization flow, and verify that the connector is connected and its tools are visible. The steps below follow Bluehost’s guidance updated September 16, 2026; client interfaces and eligibility can change.

Before you connect

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a shared way for an AI application to connect to external systems. In this setup, the assistant is the host, its internal MCP client connects to Bluehost’s remote server, and that server exposes a set of capabilities. The assistant can only do what Bluehost’s server makes available; connecting does not give it unrestricted access to Bluehost. See Bluehost’s MCP overview.

  • Have a compatible assistant installed or open, and be signed in to it.
  • Be ready to sign in to or create a Bluehost account and approve the authorization request.
  • Use https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp when the client asks for the server address.
  • If you use an npx-based local setup, install Node.js 18 or later. The remote-endpoint examples below do not require you to run Bluehost’s MCP server locally.
  • For ChatGPT Business or Enterprise managed workspaces, an administrator may need to enable custom connectors.

Bluehost’s setup guide covers Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Claude.ai, ChatGPT, Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, and nanobot. Choose the exact client you use; their configuration methods are not interchangeable.

Connect from Claude Desktop

Recommended: install the directory extension

  1. In Claude Desktop, open Settings → Extensions.
  2. Search the directory for Bluehost MCP Prod and select it.
  3. Sign in to Bluehost when prompted and approve access.
  4. Open a chat and check its connector list for the connected Bluehost service.

Manual configuration

Bluehost also documents a manual developer-configuration route that launches a remote bridge with npx -y mcp-remote https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp under an mcpServers entry. The configuration format can change with Claude Desktop releases, so use the current Bluehost setup instructions and Claude’s current client documentation for the exact file location and JSON syntax. After saving the configuration, restart Claude Desktop and confirm that the connector and tools appear.

Connect from Claude Code or Claude.ai

Claude Code

  1. In a terminal where Claude Code is installed, register the remote HTTP server:
claude mcp add --transport http bluehost https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp
  2. Check the registration:
    claude mcp list
  3. If the session requests authentication, enter /mcp in the Claude Code session and choose Authenticate, then complete Bluehost’s sign-in and approval flow.

Claude.ai on the web

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and add a custom connector.
  2. Enter https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp.
  3. Sign in to Bluehost and approve the authorization prompt.
  4. Check the connector list to confirm it is connected.

Bluehost notes that payment method setup, if needed for a later purchase, takes place in a browser.

Connect from ChatGPT

Bluehost’s September 2026 guide says custom MCP connectors are available in the ChatGPT web app on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans, not in mobile apps. Plan eligibility and interface labels can change, so check current OpenAI instructions if the options below are missing.

  1. In the web app, open Settings → Apps → Advanced settings and enable Developer mode.
  2. Go to Settings → Connectors and create a connector.
  3. Enter the Bluehost endpoint, https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp, and choose OAuth auto-discovery when prompted.
  4. Complete Bluehost sign-in and authorization, then verify the connector is available.

In a managed Business or Enterprise workspace, ask the administrator to enable custom connectors if the setting is unavailable. Keep confirmations for write actions enabled while you learn what the connector can do.

Connect from Hermes Agent

  1. Add the server with OAuth:
hermes mcp add bluehost --url https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp --auth oauth
  2. Sign in:
    hermes mcp login bluehost
  3. Check the connection and run the client’s test:
    hermes mcp list
    hermes mcp test bluehost

Start with a read-only query and review logs before allowing write actions.

Connect from OpenClaw

Bluehost documents adding a remote Streamable HTTP server through OpenClaw’s Control UI or CLI. The CLI example is:

  1. Register the server:
openclaw mcp add bluehost --url https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp --transport streamable-http --auth oauth
  2. Complete OAuth login using OpenClaw’s documented flow, then use its status or health checks to verify the connection.

OpenClaw’s configuration schema can change. Check its current documentation before using a direct configuration example. Preserve TLS verification and expose only the tools the agent needs.

Connect from nanobot

Bluehost’s guide describes a nanobot route through the application’s Apps tab or a manual tools.mcpServers entry in ~/.nanobot/config.json. For manual configuration, add the server using the current nanobot syntax, save the file, and restart the agent. Confirm the project and its current installation instructions before following commands: Bluehost distinguishes nanobot from the separate project called NanoClaw.

Verify the connection and fix common problems

A saved server entry alone does not prove the assistant can use it. Look for a connected status and visible tools, or run the client’s connection test.

  • Claude Desktop or Claude.ai: Check the connector list.
  • Claude Code: Run claude mcp list and use /mcp in the session if authentication is needed.
  • Hermes Agent: Run hermes mcp test bluehost.
  • OpenClaw: Use its status or doctor checks.
  • nanobot: Confirm the server is connected and its tools appear in the application.

If the status says “Needs authentication”

This usually means the client can reach the server but OAuth has not completed. Use the client’s authentication flow and approve Bluehost’s request; deleting and re-adding the server is generally unnecessary.

If tools do not appear

Check whether the client configuration restricts tools through an allow-list such as enabledTools or --include, and confirm any required environment variables are set. Then refresh or restart the client as its documentation recommends.

What the Bluehost MCP server lets you do—and what it does not

Bluehost says its server can expose account and hosting information, relevant billing details, Self-Managed VPS plan options, regions and operating systems, purchase flows for a Self-Managed VPS or domain, SSH key setup when a server is provisioned, and order status. Account details that may be visible include billing account ID, feature set, product instance ID, current and maximum site counts, region and server details, server status and IP, hosting add-on status, and account status. Bluehost says expiration dates are not currently visible. See the Bluehost MCP FAQ.

  • MCP access is limited to US customers paying in USD.
  • Payment methods must be added or changed in a browser.
  • The connector does not support server cancellation or decommissioning.
  • Purchases through this path are limited to Self-Managed VPS plans, not Managed VPS.
  • Bluehost says connecting itself does not incur a charge. Purchases require a payment method already on file; check Bluehost’s current checkout for prices.

Privacy and safe use

An authorized assistant may view account details and perform actions, including purchases. Connect only an assistant you trust, review its available tools, and disconnect or revoke the connector through the assistant’s connector or extension settings when you no longer want it connected.

Newfold’s privacy addendum applies specifically to the Bluehost Claude Connector, not automatically to every client. It describes the connector as optional, says Bluehost authorization scopes require user approval, and says requests are sent when the Claude session asks the connector to act. The addendum lists authorization records, server-side operation logs, and relevant account data requested by the user among the information processed; it says Connector data is not used to train AI models.

For self-hosted agents such as OpenClaw and nanobot, Bluehost also advises isolating the agent in a container or virtual machine, not exposing it publicly, limiting tool access, reviewing server sources, and avoiding plaintext secrets in configuration.
