To set up BattlEye filters on an Arma 3 dedicated server, enable BattlEye, put mission-specific plain-text filter files in the active profile’s BattlEye directory, begin with logging rules, and tighten only the exact strings that your logs confirm are abusive. The directory is normally created inside the server profile directory, but custom profile and startup parameters can move it. A filter that works for one mission or mod collection can produce false kicks on another, so copying a generic filter pack unchanged is unsafe.

What BattlEye filters control
BattlEye filters are server-side text rules that watch classes of script and command activity. When a line matches, its leading action number tells BattlEye how to handle the match. The documented form is an action number from 1 through 7, one space, and a keyword or phrase. The exact action behavior belongs to BattlEye’s filter documentation; do not assume that a number means the same thing in every context without checking the version you run.

A match can appear to a player as a BattlEye “restriction” kick. That message means a BattlEye filter detected activity covered by a rule; it does not, by itself, prove that the player intentionally cheated. Mission frameworks, scripted vehicles, remote calls, and mod updates can all change the strings that a legitimate client sends. The useful response is to read the corresponding server log, identify the precise match, and adjust only the necessary rule.
Arma 3 also has a separate CfgRemoteExec configuration. It determines which commands, functions, and targets may be remotely executed. BattlEye’s remoteexec.txt filter adds another layer. A remote call can therefore be allowed by one layer and denied by the other, so troubleshooting must examine both.

Requirements and decisions before editing
- A running Arma 3 dedicated server with access to its active profile directory.
- Permission to edit the server configuration, profile files, and firewall rules.
- Access to BattlEye logs and the server console.
- A way to stop, start, or otherwise reload the server safely, plus a rollback copy of the current files.
- The exact mission and mod set that players will use. Filter content must be written for those scripts, not for an abstract “vanilla” server.
Decide where the server’s profile is actually being loaded before creating files. Startup parameters and custom profile settings can change the default location. A filter saved in an unused profile can look perfectly valid while the running server ignores it.
Find the active BattlEye working directory
Arma 3 normally creates the BattlEye directory beneath the server profile directory. The active profile is the one selected by the server’s configuration and startup parameters, not necessarily the directory beside the executable or the profile you last edited.
- Open the server configuration and confirm that BattlEye is enabled with
BattlEye = 1. - Check the startup parameters for a custom profile or profile path. Record the path used by the process that is currently running.
- Inside that active profile, locate the
BattlEyeworking directory. Existing log files are a useful sign that you have found the directory the server is using. - If more than one profile exists, stop the server briefly and verify the process or startup configuration rather than guessing from folder names.
When filters appear to have no effect, this location check is the first diagnostic step. Confirm BattlEye is enabled, the files are in the active profile’s BattlEye directory, and the server is using the startup parameters you inspected.
Back up the profile and filter files
Before changing a rule, copy the entire active BattlEye directory and the relevant profile configuration to a dated backup. Keep the original filenames and encoding. A new rule can kick every player in a mission, and a quick rollback is safer than trying to reconstruct a working file while the server is busy.
- Use a timestamp in the backup name so you can identify which mission and mod set it represents.
- Save a copy of the startup/profile settings that determine the active directory.
- Change one logical rule at a time and record the reason, date, mission, and mod versions.
- Never treat deleting a filter file as a permanent fix for a false positive; preserve a baseline and create a narrow exception instead.
Choose the filter files your mission needs
Filter files are ordinary text files whose names correspond to monitored command or script classes. Create only the files relevant to your server. A maintained filter collection commonly includes the following names:

Use the action-and-keyword format
Each rule starts with an action number from 1 to 7, followed by a space and the keyword:
5 B_MRAP_01_
5 "some phrase"
The examples show syntax only, not a universal recommendation for action number 5 or either keyword. A prefix such as B_MRAP_01_ can cover a family of class names, but it may also match a legitimate variant you did not anticipate. Test a prefix against normal mission behavior before using a stronger action.
Quote phrases that contain spaces
Put a phrase containing spaces inside quotation marks. Keep the quotation marks in the text file. If the logged string includes punctuation or a longer surrounding expression, match the smallest stable portion that distinguishes the abusive activity from legitimate activity.
Escape regular-expression metacharacters where supported
Ordinary BattlEye filters treat characters such as ^, $, ., |, ?, *, +, (, ), [, ], and { or } as regular-expression metacharacters. Escape them when you intend to match the literal character. The important exception is scripts.txt: it does not support regular expressions, so do not apply regex assumptions to that file.

For a literal match, copy the relevant text from the log carefully, then remove only the variable portion that must be generalized. A rule that is too broad can match an entire mission system; a rule that is too narrow may miss the abusive variation.
Build filters in logging mode first
Start with normal gameplay
Begin with logging actions while the server runs the real mission and mod set. Have administrators exercise ordinary gameplay: spawning mission-approved objects, using scripted interactions, changing positions through legitimate systems, and invoking expected remote functions. This establishes which strings are normal on your server.
Read the matching log entry
When BattlEye records a match, capture the filter file, the exact string, the player or network context shown, the mission, and the time. Compare repeated entries rather than reacting to one line in isolation. A mod update can alter capitalization, parameters, class-name prefixes, or serialized values without changing the visible feature.
Tighten one exact condition
After confirming that a string is abusive or impossible for the mission’s legitimate code, change only that rule to a stronger action. Leave unrelated rules at their previous setting. Restart or reload using the method supported for that file, then reproduce the event in a controlled test. There is no universal threshold for an acceptable rule: scripting differs between missions and mods.

Handle remote execution in both configuration layers
Remote execution is governed by two mechanisms. The mission’s CfgRemoteExec configuration controls which commands, functions, and targets are allowed. BattlEye’s remoteexec.txt independently filters remote-execution strings. The more local Arma configuration takes precedence in this order: mission description, then campaign, then game or mod configuration.
- Identify the exact command or function in the BattlEye log.
- Check the active mission’s
CfgRemoteExecpolicy, including allowed targets and functions. - Check campaign and game/mod configurations if the mission does not define the relevant setting.
- Inspect the matching
remoteexec.txtrule and its action. - Test the legitimate call again before changing an exploit-related rule.
If the BattlEye line looks correct but a legitimate remote call still fails, the Arma configuration may be denying it. Conversely, allowing a function in CfgRemoteExec does not override a BattlEye filter match.

RCon is the administrative channel used for commands such as reloading a script filter. It is configured separately from the filter files in beserver.cfg, or in beserver_x64.cfg when the server uses the 64-bit configuration. Place the file in the active BattlEye working directory.

- Do not publish the password in a panel screenshot, chat message, repository, or support ticket.
- Connect from an administrator client and verify that commands reach the same server profile whose files you edited.
If RCon cannot connect, verify the active BattlEye directory, filename, password, port, firewall rule, bind address, and the requirement that the RCon port sit outside the game-port range.

Reloading scripts.txt
BattlEye documents the RCon command loadScripts for loading scripts.txt without restarting the server. After saving the file, issue that command through the secured RCon connection, confirm that the server accepts it, and watch the log while a controlled test exercises the relevant script.

Other filter files
Do not assume that every filter file supports the same live-reload command. Use the restart or reload workflow supported by your server management setup for the file you changed. If a restart is required, announce a maintenance window, preserve the backup, and verify that the process starts with the intended profile parameters.
Use a controlled verification test
- Record the file and rule changed.
- Run a test mission containing the legitimate behavior that previously produced the log entry.
- Confirm that the expected behavior works and that the log no longer records an unwanted match.
- Trigger a known test string or administrator-controlled event where safe, and confirm that the intended action occurs.
- Observe real players for a complete mission cycle before applying the same rule to a larger public population.
Diagnose common BattlEye filter problems
Players receive a restriction after a mod update
Compare the complete logged string with the rule that matched it. Mod updates frequently change class names, parameters, or generated script text. Add a narrow mission-specific exception or revise the exact prefix after testing; do not delete every protection rule simply because one legitimate action changed.
A scripts.txt pattern behaves unexpectedly
Remove regex assumptions. That file does not support regular expressions. Match the literal script text supported by the file’s syntax, and test whether punctuation, spacing, or a generated value changes between runs.
A remote call fails even though the BattlEye rule looks right
Inspect the active mission’s CfgRemoteExec, then its campaign and game/mod fallbacks, together with remoteexec.txt. The local configuration can deny a call before the BattlEye rule is relevant, or BattlEye can deny a call that Arma otherwise permits.
Filters appear to be ignored
- Confirm
BattlEye = 1in the configuration actually loaded by the running server. - Confirm the files are plain text and are in the active profile’s BattlEye directory.
- Check startup parameters for a different profile path.
- Verify the exact filename, including spelling and extension.
- Reload or restart using the supported procedure for that file.
- Watch a fresh log entry while testing; an old log cannot prove that a new file was loaded.
RCon will not connect
Check that beserver.cfg or beserver_x64.cfg is in the active BattlEye directory, the password matches, the port is open to your administrator address, the bind address is correct, and the port is outside the game server’s reserved range. Also make sure your RCon client is pointed at the same host and port that the server is listening on.
A rule causes widespread false kicks
Restore the dated backup or revert only the changed line, then return the rule to logging while you collect normal mission behavior. Broad prefixes and catch-all strings are the usual cause. Replace them with the smallest stable abusive string confirmed by the logs.
Operating practices that keep filters maintainable
- Keep separate filter sets for materially different mission and mod combinations.
- Version-control or archive every change with the server build, mission, mod versions, and date.
- Review logs after every major mod or mission update before enabling stronger actions.
- Use a staging or password-protected test instance for new rules whenever possible.
- Give administrators a documented rollback procedure and access to the latest known-good backup.
- Limit RCon to trusted administrators and rotate its password when staff access changes.
- Review disk usage so verbose logging does not silently fill the profile volume.
- Do not publish filter contents that reveal private server details, administrator credentials, or security-sensitive exceptions.
Self-hosted versus managed server requirements
The important distinction is not a provider name; it is whether the service gives you the controls BattlEye administration requires. Compare any deployment using the following criteria:
| Requirement | Why it matters | Question to ask a host or administrator |
|---|---|---|
| Access to the BattlEye working directory | Filters and RCon configuration must be edited in the active profile. | Can I view and edit the actual profile’s BattlEye files? |
| Custom profile and startup parameters | The default directory can change when profiles or startup settings are customized. | Can I see and change the parameters that select the active profile? |
| RCon port and firewall control | RCon needs a non-conflicting port and restricted network access. | Can I choose the port and limit its firewall sources? |
| Log access | Safe tuning depends on seeing the exact matched string. | Can I download or stream BattlEye and server logs? |
| Backups and rollback | A false-positive rule must be reversible quickly. | Can I create and restore dated profile backups? |
| Restart and reload controls | loadScripts can reload scripts.txt, while other changes may require a restart. |
Can authorized administrators reload or restart on demand? |
A managed service that hides the profile directory, logs, firewall, or startup parameters may prevent reliable filter maintenance even if it advertises BattlEye support.
Quick Recap
