Set up three separate defenses: real-time alerts and change notifications at your bank, a SIM/port-out lock with your mobile carrier, and a free one-year fraud alert on your credit file if your identity may be exposed. Bank alerts reveal transactions and account changes; carrier locks stop many attempts to take over your phone number; a credit-file alert prompts lenders to verify your identity before opening new credit. None replaces the others.
What each fraud control does
“Fraud alert” can mean several different controls. Choosing the right one starts with the action you want to detect or block.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Control | What it monitors or protects | What happens | Speed | Does it block the action? | Cost and duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank or credit-union alerts | Debit-card purchases, ACH activity, wires, logins, new devices, password resets and profile or contact changes, depending on the institution | You receive an app push, text or email when a selected event occurs | Usually near real time, subject to the institution’s processing and delivery | No. It warns you so you can report or stop activity | Generally included with the account; available alert types vary |
| Carrier number lock, SIM protection or wireless account lock | Attempts to move your number to another carrier or change the SIM/eSIM or device on the line | The carrier requires the lock to be disabled or additional authorization before the change | At the point a SIM change or port request is attempted | Yes, when the feature covers that action and remains enabled | Often free; eligibility and exact coverage depend on carrier, plan and account role |
| Initial credit-file fraud alert | Applications for new credit made using your identity | Prospective creditors are asked to verify your identity before opening an account | When a lender checks your credit report | No. It does not freeze your report or prevent every form of misuse | Free; lasts one year and can be renewed |
| Credit freeze | Access to your credit report for new-credit decisions | Most prospective creditors cannot access the report until you temporarily lift the freeze | At the credit-application stage | It restricts report access, but it does not monitor bank transactions or phone-number changes | Separate process with each credit bureau; terms and procedures are set by the bureaus |
These layers address different takeover paths. A bank alert can expose an unauthorized withdrawal, but it cannot stop someone from transferring your phone number. A carrier lock can protect the number used for account recovery, but it cannot tell you that a fraudulent ACH debit posted. A credit-file alert concerns new credit and is not a substitute for either type of account notification.

1. Open the security and alert controls
- Sign in through the official app or a web address you entered yourself.
- Open the area labeled Alerts, Notifications, Security or a similar setting. Some institutions place alerts under each individual checking, savings, card or loan account rather than in one global menu.
- Review every account and card that can move money. A notification enabled only for your checking account will not necessarily cover a linked savings account, debit card or credit card.
2. Turn on transaction alerts
Enable alerts for every transaction category the institution offers. At minimum, select:
- Debit-card purchases and ATM withdrawals
- ACH debits and credits
- Wire transfers
- Checks or bill-pay transactions, when available
- Large-dollar or unusual-amount transactions
- International transactions or card-not-present purchases, if offered
Federal Reserve interagency guidance identifies transaction alerts as a customer mechanism for monitoring account activity and recommends that institutions explain how customers should report suspicious activity. Choose a delivery method you check reliably, such as an app push notification plus email. Text alerts can be useful, but do not treat a text alone as proof that a message is genuine.
3. Turn on account-access and profile-change alerts
Transaction notifications are only part of the picture. Enable alerts for:

- Changes to your email address, phone number, mailing address or security questions
- New payees, external transfer accounts or linked-bank additions
- Changes to notification preferences
- New account opening, overdraft settings or card-wallet enrollment, where the institution provides those notices
A profile-change alert can arrive before money moves. If an attacker changes the email address or phone number on file, immediately sign in through the official app, contact the institution using the number on your statement, and ask whether access, transfers or contact information were changed.
4. Configure useful thresholds without creating alert fatigue
If the app supports thresholds, set a low enough amount to catch an unfamiliar purchase but high enough that ordinary activity does not cause hundreds of messages. A practical approach is to enable all transaction alerts first, observe the volume for a week, and then adjust only the categories that are overwhelming. Do not disable security alerts merely because they are frequent; instead, change the delivery channel or threshold if the institution allows it.

5. Confirm delivery and reporting instructions
- Trigger a harmless test, such as a small purchase, if the institution provides a test-alert button.
- Check that the message identifies the correct account without exposing a full account number.
- Save the institution’s fraud-reporting number from your statement or official app in your contacts.
- Review whether alerts are enabled for joint owners, authorized users and each cardholder. One person’s notification settings may not cover another person’s card.
Do not wait for an alert to report a transaction you do not recognize. An alert is a monitoring mechanism, not proof that the bank will automatically reverse a transaction or that a reporting deadline has been extended.
Lock your mobile number against SIM swaps and port-outs
Criminals who obtain control of a phone number may receive password-reset codes or calls intended for you. A carrier lock adds a barrier before the number is transferred or the SIM/eSIM is changed. The feature’s name and coverage differ by provider, plan and account role.
Verizon: Number Lock and SIM Protection
Verizon documents two account-security controls. Number Lock blocks moving your mobile number to another carrier until the lock is turned off. SIM Protection blocks unauthorized SIM or device changes. Sign in through the official Verizon app or website, open the account-security or line-management area, and look for both settings. Check each line individually if the account has multiple numbers. Verizon’s description is explicit: “When Number Lock is turned on, it blocks anyone from moving your mobile number to another carrier until it is turned off.”
Before changing phones, replacing a damaged SIM or transferring service yourself, verify whether the relevant lock must be temporarily disabled. Re-enable it immediately after the authorized change and confirm that the status shows active.
T-Mobile: SIM Protection eligibility matters
T-Mobile says eligible postpaid customers can enable SIM Protection after signing in. Its support information excludes T-Mobile Business, Prepaid and Metro by T-Mobile. If your account is in one of those categories, do not assume the same control is available; look for the security options displayed for your plan or ask support through an authenticated channel.

After enabling the feature, review all lines and authorized users. A protection setting on one number may not cover every line on a family or multi-line account. If you are replacing a phone, follow the carrier’s authorized-change process rather than turning off protection in response to an unsolicited message.

AT&T: Wireless Account Lock
AT&T documents a free Wireless Account Lock. It blocks SIM/eSIM swaps and transfers to or from another carrier. Open the official AT&T app or website, find the wireless account-security controls, and turn on the lock for the account or line as the interface directs. AT&T’s support page was last updated April 12, 2026; labels and placement can still change, so use the current authenticated account view.
Account Lock can interfere with legitimate upgrades, replacements and number transfers while it is active. Plan the change, authenticate through the carrier’s normal process, disable the lock only when necessary, and turn it back on when the work is complete.
For any carrier: verify the lock and protect the account itself
- Take a screenshot or note the date and time when the lock shows enabled.
- Set a unique carrier-account password that you do not reuse at your bank or email provider.
- Use the strongest account authentication the carrier offers, such as an authenticator app or a carrier PIN, rather than relying only on SMS codes.
- Ask whether an account PIN, transfer PIN or port-out PIN is required in addition to the lock.
- Review authorized users and remove people who no longer need account access.
- Keep your billing email secure because carrier notices and reset links may be sent there.
A lock reduces risk; it does not make the number invulnerable. Social engineering, compromised email, an exposed carrier PIN or an attacker already signed in to the account can still create problems. Treat an unexpected loss of cellular service as urgent, especially if it happens together with password-reset messages.
Place a free one-year fraud alert on your credit file
If you suspect identity theft or believe personal information has been exposed, place an initial fraud alert with any one of the three nationwide credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. The bureau you contact must notify the other two. The initial alert lasts one year and can be renewed.

How to place the alert
- Use the bureau’s official fraud-alert process or contact method that you independently locate. Avoid search ads, unsolicited calls and links in messages.
- Provide the identity-verification information requested by the bureau.
- Record the confirmation, start date and expiration date.
- Check that the other two bureaus received the alert. The notifying bureau is required to pass it along, but retaining the confirmation helps if a lender later questions the alert.
The alert asks prospective creditors to verify your identity before opening new credit. It does not freeze access to your credit report, stop existing-account fraud, monitor checking-account withdrawals or block a criminal from filing a tax return. If you need to restrict report access more strongly, investigate a separate credit freeze with each bureau; a freeze is a different control with different procedures.
When a fraud alert is appropriate
- You find an unfamiliar inquiry or account on a credit report.
- Your wallet, identity documents or personal data were stolen.
- You receive a credit-application decision for an account you did not request.
- A company notifies you that information involved in an incident may have been exposed.
- You detect a SIM-swap attempt or account takeover and believe the attacker may know your identity details.
A credit alert is not required merely because your bank sends transaction notifications. Bank alerts and credit-file alerts watch different events, so the decision depends on whether your identity or credit application information may be at risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Respond safely when an alert or call looks suspicious
Fraudsters often impersonate a bank, carrier or “fraud department” immediately after a real or fabricated alert. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2024 consumer guidance is unambiguous: “Never share a verification code. Ever.” It also warns: “Never move or transfer your money to ‘protect it.’”
Use a trusted channel, not the inbound message
- Do not call the number in an unexpected text, email or pop-up.
- Do not reply, click a link, install remote-access software or read a one-time code to the caller.
- Open the official bank or carrier app yourself, type the known website address, or use the phone number printed on a statement or payment card.
- Tell the representative that you received a suspicious contact and ask them to review recent logins, profile changes, transactions, SIM changes and transfer requests.
A legitimate representative may ask you to authenticate in the app, but you should initiate the contact. No legitimate fraud process requires you to move money to a new “safe” account controlled by the caller.

- Call the bank and carrier immediately using trusted contact information and state exactly what was disclosed.
- Change the affected passwords from a device you trust, beginning with your email account because it can reset other accounts.
- Ask the carrier to restore the correct SIM/eSIM, add or reset the account PIN, and review port-out or device-change activity.
- Ask the bank to block transfers, replace cards, review beneficiaries and investigate unauthorized transactions.
- Place a credit-file fraud alert if identity information may have been exposed, and consider a credit freeze if new-credit misuse is a concern.
- Document times, case numbers, messages and the names of representatives.
What monitoring services can and cannot tell you
Commercial credit-monitoring or identity-monitoring services are optional additions, not replacements for account controls. The FTC notes that credit monitoring will not alert you when someone withdraws money from your bank account, and it will not tell you when someone uses your Social Security number to file a tax return and collect your refund. Bank transaction alerts are the relevant control for withdrawals; tax-agency account protections and timely tax-fraud reporting address the second risk.
Best Value
Before paying for any monitoring product, identify the event it covers, the delay before notification, whether it includes recovery assistance, and whether the coverage is limited to a particular bureau or data source. A service that reports a new credit inquiry still does not lock a carrier account or stop an ACH debit.
A practical setup sequence
Completing the controls in this order gives you a clear baseline without waiting for a suspicious event.
- Secure email first. Use a unique password and strong non-SMS authentication for the email account that receives bank and carrier notices.
- Configure each financial account. Turn on transaction, login, password-reset and profile-change alerts for checking, savings, cards and transfer-enabled accounts.
- Save trusted contact paths. Record phone numbers from statements and official apps, and bookmark sites you entered yourself.
- Enable the carrier control. Turn on Number Lock, SIM Protection, Wireless Account Lock or the equivalent available for each line. Verify the status.
- Review recovery methods. Remove obsolete phone numbers and email addresses, and add an authenticator method where supported.
- Assess credit exposure. If there is a specific identity-theft or exposure concern, place the free one-year alert with one bureau and retain the confirmation.
- Test your notification path. Confirm that push notifications, email and text delivery reach you and that your phone’s battery-saver or notification settings are not suppressing them.
- Recheck after account changes. When you change a phone, email address, card or authorized user, verify the alert and lock settings again.
Troubleshooting common failures
No alert arrived for a transaction
- Confirm the alert is enabled for the specific account or card, not only for another product at the same institution.
- Check whether the transaction type is excluded, pending, below a threshold or processed in batches.
- Verify your phone number and email address in the institution’s profile.
- Check app notification permissions, spam folders and carrier message blocking.
- Contact the institution promptly even if the alert arrived late; notification timing does not change your duty to report an unauthorized transaction.
The carrier lock option is missing
- Check whether you are the primary account owner or an authorized user with permission to change security settings.
- Confirm the plan category. T-Mobile’s documented SIM Protection, for example, excludes Business, Prepaid and Metro by T-Mobile accounts.
- Look under account security, line management, SIM, number lock or port-out settings rather than general phone settings.
- Ask the carrier through an authenticated support channel what protection is available for your exact line.
You cannot complete a legitimate SIM or number transfer
A lock is designed to stop that action. Start the carrier’s normal authenticated upgrade or replacement process, temporarily disable only the required control, complete the change, confirm the new SIM or eSIM works, and re-enable the protection. Never disable it because an unexpected caller says the step is necessary.
You placed a credit alert but a lender still calls
The alert requests identity verification; it does not guarantee that every lender will use the same procedure or that all accounts will be blocked. Answer through a trusted channel, tell the lender that a fraud alert is active, and review your bureau confirmations and credit reports for unauthorized inquiries or accounts.
How to maintain the protections
- Review bank and carrier security settings at least every few months and after any suspected compromise.
- Keep contact details current so alerts do not go to an old number or mailbox.
- Renew the one-year credit alert before it expires if the identity-theft risk remains.
- Revoke former employees, household members or service providers who no longer need account access.
- Use separate passwords for email, banking and your carrier account.
- Teach every joint account holder not to disclose verification codes or transfer money at an unknown caller’s direction.
The strongest setup combines early warning with a control that can stop a high-impact change. Bank notifications tell you what happened to money and account access, carrier locks make number takeover harder, and a credit-file alert adds identity verification at the point of a new-credit application.
