A route switch can interrupt the existing ingest session, so it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. Measure upload performance at the venue on both links and configure the stream to fit the slower one with headroom.
What backup internet can—and cannot—do
A dual-WAN router changes the internet path used by the FFmpeg computer when its preferred WAN becomes unavailable. That is network failover. It is different from YouTube’s backup-encoder workflow, which uses a second encoder. Either may help, and a high-reliability event may use both, but neither should be assumed to preserve a live session without interruption.

When the router changes WAN, the public network address and active connection can change. FFmpeg may lose its connection to YouTube and need to reconnect; YouTube may show an ingest interruption while that happens. Whether playback resumes cleanly depends on the router, encoder, YouTube stream setup and timing. The only reliable way to learn your setup’s behavior is to test it end to end.

Choose two genuinely independent internet paths
Use fixed broadband as primary and mobile data as standby
Keep your fixed broadband as the preferred WAN and add a 4G or 5G mobile-data connection as the backup. The mobile link needs its own usable connection, such as a compatible cellular modem or router. A phone hotspot that depends on the same broadband connection that failed is not a backup path. Ideally, the two links should not share the same local access network or power dependency; verify this for your venue rather than assuming it.

Test where and when you will stream
Run repeated upload tests on both connections at the actual streaming location and, if possible, at the hours you expect to go live. Check sustained upload performance, jitter and packet loss, not just a single headline speed result. Mobile performance varies with local radio conditions and congestion, so there is no universally best Indian carrier established here.
In India, TRAI requires providers to declare typical speeds but does not prescribe a minimum broadband upload speed. Read the mobile plan’s fair-use terms as well: some plans reduce speed after a usage threshold. Confirm that the allowance and post-threshold performance can support the full stream duration.

Select and configure the dual-WAN router
Choose a router or firewall that supports two WANs, health monitoring and automatic failover. OPNsense documents multi-WAN configuration and use of 3G/4G modems as a failsafe WAN. Hardware, firmware and cellular modem compatibility are not universal: check the exact appliance, modem interface, supported radio bands and carrier compatibility before buying. A compatible USB or miniPCIe modem may be required, depending on the appliance.
- Connect fixed broadband to the preferred WAN and the cellular modem or mobile router to the standby WAN.
- In the router’s multi-WAN or gateway settings, assign fixed broadband higher priority than mobile data.
- Enable gateway health checks that test actual internet reachability. A modem can still report a physical link while upstream internet access is unavailable.
- Set the router to move traffic to mobile data when the primary health check fails, and to return to the preferred WAN according to the router’s supported recovery policy.
- Connect the FFmpeg computer to the router over Ethernet where practical. Verify that its default route goes through the router and that the standby mobile WAN is connected and usable before the stream.

Set FFmpeg and YouTube for the links you have
Budget bitrate from upload capacity
Use the lower of the two links’ measured, sustained upload capacity as your planning limit. YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If you run primary and backup encoders simultaneously, YouTube recommends capacity for both streams plus 20%. Do not size the stream from advertised download speed.
Choose resolution and frame rate first, then consult YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate recommendations and choose an encoder bitrate both WANs can sustain with headroom. The recommended bitrate table can change, so check YouTube’s current live-stream settings guidance when configuring the event rather than relying on an old copied value.

Use stable ingest settings
- Prefer RTMPS for the YouTube ingest connection.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use the same intended resolution and frame rate throughout testing and the event. If the mobile link cannot sustain the chosen settings, reduce the stream bitrate or resolution before going live.
- Use the YouTube stream key for the correct live stream, keep it private, and enter it only in the encoder or service that needs it.
Consider FFmpeg output recovery separately
FFmpeg documents FIFO output recovery options that can help an output recover after a temporary failure. Its documented example includes -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 before the RTMP destination. Adapt options to your installed FFmpeg version and full command; those options do not provide a second internet path, and FIFO recovery does not guarantee YouTube will preserve the same live session. Review FFmpeg’s documentation for option syntax before changing a production command.
Test the failure before an important stream
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream using the same encoder, router, settings and stream path planned for the event.
- Confirm the YouTube preview, stream health, audio and moving video are satisfactory on the primary WAN.
- Cause a real primary-WAN failure by disconnecting the primary WAN feed or its Ethernet cable. Observe whether the router switches to mobile data, what FFmpeg logs, whether YouTube reports an ingest interruption and how viewer playback behaves.
- Restore the primary connection and observe the router’s return behavior. Confirm that FFmpeg and YouTube remain healthy rather than assuming recovery from the router status alone.
- Repeat with the mobile backup unavailable. This establishes what happens if the primary fails while the standby link is also unusable.
- Monitor audio and video continuously during the test. If you keep a local recording, check that it remains intact and continues growing; this helps distinguish an ingest problem from a capture or encoding failure.
YouTube’s own encoder-failover test is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. That test applies when you have configured a second encoder; it is not a substitute for testing router WAN failover.

Which resilience option fits?

These mechanisms address different failure points. For an important event, a second encoder can add another layer beyond WAN failover, but it also requires additional setup and bandwidth. No operator, router model or SIM plan can be recommended universally from the available evidence; local measurements and verified compatibility matter.
Troubleshoot common failover problems
- The router does not switch when broadband is down: The health check may only be detecting modem or Ethernet link status. Configure a check for internet reachability and test by interrupting the primary path.
- Mobile WAN connects but the stream still drops: Switching routes does not ensure an existing FFmpeg-to-YouTube session survives an address change. Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health, then test whether FFmpeg reconnects and playback resumes with your settings.
- The stream is unstable on mobile data: The link may not sustain the selected bitrate at that location or time. Repeat upload tests, reduce bitrate or resolution, and check packet loss, congestion and the plan’s fair-use threshold.
- Cellular modem is not detected or cannot register: Confirm the router supports that modem and interface, the SIM and plan are active, and the device supports the carrier’s required radio bands. Verify the exact hardware and firmware combination.
- FFmpeg reports output errors after a brief outage: Review the full FFmpeg log and version-specific option documentation. FIFO recovery may help with temporary output failures, but it cannot correct unavailable mobile service or guarantee continuation of the YouTube session.
- WAN changes repeatedly between primary and backup: Review gateway health-check reliability and recovery policy in the router. A fluctuating primary link can cause repeated route changes; test and tune against observed link behavior rather than assuming a single disconnect is the only failure mode.
