What you need before scheduling a restart
Prepare both halves of the operation: a controlled shutdown and an automatic startup. A scheduler can send warnings at the right time, but it cannot recover a process unless a separate supervisor is configured.
- A running Palworld dedicated server.
- Administrative access and a strong, privately stored RCON password.
- RCON enabled in the supported Palworld server settings, with
RCONEnabledturned on andRCONPortset to the port you intend to use. - A scheduler: Windows Task Scheduler, a cron or systemd timer, Docker’s documented automatic-restart variables, or a hosting-provider task.
- A restart mechanism: a systemd service, Docker restart policy, wrapper loop, or provider restart action.
- Permission to write logs and to read or copy the Palworld save directory for backups.
Use a maintenance window that is quiet for your community. One Docker image documents a daily default of 0 5 * * *, while a provider quickstart describes 12-hour or 24-hour schedules. Those are examples, not Palworld requirements; choose a time appropriate for the time zones and play patterns of your community.

How the safe restart sequence works
Keep the following order intact. Sending a stop command first can interrupt a save, while scheduling a stop without a supervisor can leave the server down.
- Check RCON. Send an
Infocommand and abort if the server does not answer. This prevents a script from pretending that warnings or a save succeeded. - Send staged notices. Broadcast a 30-minute, 20-minute, and 10-minute warning, or use a longer sequence for a busy community.
- Save the world. Use
/Savewhere the host exposes slash commands, or the equivalent save command supported by your RCON client and Palworld build. - Request a timed shutdown. A documented hosting interface uses
/Shutdown 60 Restarting_soon; the number is seconds. A Windows example sends a 10-minute countdown withShutdown 600 Server_restarting_in_10_minutes. - Let the supervisor restart. The process should exit cleanly, then systemd, Docker, a wrapper, or the provider panel should start it again.
- Verify recovery. Confirm that the process is running, the port accepts connections, RCON answers, and startup logs show the expected world and configuration.
Command spelling and argument formatting vary among RCON clients and Palworld builds. Test the complete sequence during a maintenance window before enabling it for regular use.

Configure and secure RCON
Enable the control path
In the supported Palworld server configuration, enable RCONEnabled and set RCONPort. Restart the server once manually after changing these settings, then test the port from the same machine or management host that will run the scheduler.
Protect the password and port
Use a long password that is different from operating-system, panel, and game-account credentials. Store it in a protected environment variable, operating-system secret store, or a file readable only by the account running the task. Do not place it in a publicly readable script, paste it into community chat, or print it in command output.
Restrict the RCON port with a firewall to trusted management addresses whenever possible. If the scheduler and server run on the same host, bind and permit only the local management path supported by your setup. A failed reachability check should stop the job before any warning is broadcast.
Perform a health check first
Use your RCON client to send Info. The check should have a timeout and a non-zero failure result so Task Scheduler, cron, a container entrypoint, or a wrapper can record the failure. If the check fails, investigate the address, port, password, firewall, and whether the Palworld process has finished starting before attempting a restart.
Design a warning timetable players can understand
Warnings should tell players what will happen and when. A practical sequence is:

- 30 minutes: announce the planned restart and the expected downtime window.
- 20 minutes: repeat the notice so players who joined recently see it.
- 10 minutes: ask players to leave dangerous areas, finish trades, and avoid starting activities they cannot complete.
- Final countdown: issue the timed shutdown after the save command, using a message that includes the remaining seconds or minutes.
The exact text is yours to choose. Some Palworld RCON examples encode spaces in a Broadcast argument with underscores, such as Broadcast Server_will_restart_in_30_minutes. Other clients use quoting or a different escaping rule. If messages arrive truncated, inspect the client’s quoting and test both spaces and underscores against the Palworld build you run.
For high-population servers, lengthen the lead time rather than sending more frequent short warnings. Publish the regular maintenance window outside the game as well, so a player who misses a broadcast is not surprised.
Windows: Task Scheduler with an RCON script
Build the command sequence
A Windows batch or PowerShell script can call an RCON client such as mcrcon. Keep the server address, RCON port, and password in protected variables or a secret store. The script should write a timestamped log and stop immediately when the initial Info check fails.

Shutdown 600 Server_restarting_in_10_minutesDo not assume that the displayed command syntax is universal. Some interfaces require leading slashes, while others accept the command name without them. Validate each command manually, then run the full script with a test world or a low-risk maintenance period.
Schedule it at startup and on a calendar
In Task Scheduler, create a task that runs under an account permitted to execute the RCON client and write its log. Set the trigger to the chosen daily or weekly maintenance time. The cited Windows approach also uses a boot-start option, which helps re-establish scheduled operation after a host reboot.
Configure the task to run whether or not a user is logged on, prevent overlapping instances, and capture standard output and errors. The restart job itself should not launch a second Palworld process if the supervisor is already responsible for starting it. After the shutdown countdown, the server process should exit and the configured service, wrapper, or provider action should bring it back.

Verify a Windows run
- Confirm the log records a successful
Inforesponse. - Check that each broadcast appears in game and is not truncated.
- Confirm the save command completes before the shutdown request.
- Watch the process exit after the requested countdown.
- Confirm the supervisor starts one process, not two, and that RCON answers after startup.
Linux: cron or a systemd timer plus a supervised service
Separate the timer from the service
Run the warning-and-shutdown script from cron or a systemd timer, while a systemd service or wrapper owns the Palworld process. This separation means a clean shutdown can be followed by an automatic launch without asking the timer to manage a long-running game process.
Use the actual unit name and paths from your installation. The service should restart after a clean exit according to your chosen policy, and its logs should remain available for diagnosing failed starts. The timer should record RCON failures, command responses, and the final shutdown request.
Make the script idempotent
Before broadcasting, check RCON and, where practical, confirm that the expected Palworld process belongs to the intended instance. If the timer runs twice because of an administrative mistake, the health check and a lock mechanism should prevent two overlapping countdowns. Never start a second server merely because the warning script cannot reach the first one; first determine whether the process is still starting, stopped, or listening on a different port.
Test recovery after a clean exit
Run the script manually, observe the save and shutdown, and then inspect the systemd service status and journal for the automatic restart. The final test is a host reboot: the service must start on boot, the timer must remain enabled, and the first scheduled run must still be able to authenticate to RCON.

Container images expose different variable names, so use the names documented by the image you selected. One documented image provides:

Another container documents AUTO_REBOOT_ENABLED, AUTO_REBOOT_WARN_MINUTES, and cron scheduling, and requires RCON for automatic reboots. Do not mix variable names from one image with another; inspect the image’s own documentation and confirm the container logs show that the variables were accepted.
Choose a Docker restart policy
Set restart: unless-stopped or restart: always when that matches your operational policy. The cited container documentation warns that without a restart policy the server can stop after a clean shutdown and require manual intervention. Decide whether a deliberate administrator stop should remain stopped (unless-stopped) or whether the container should return whenever the Docker daemon starts (always).

Keep the save directory on persistent storage, not only in the container’s writable layer. Before changing the image, environment variables, or command wrapper, copy the save directory to separate storage and retain enough history to recover from a bad update.

Many providers expose a scheduled restart or quickstart task instead of requiring you to maintain cron. Use the panel’s restart action only when it performs the same safe sequence: player notices, a save, a timed shutdown, and a supervised start. If the panel merely kills and relaunches the process, add an RCON script or use the panel’s documented warning fields.
If the panel offers “only when empty,” “defer while occupied,” or an equivalent option, enable it for routine maintenance. Continue publishing the maintenance window, because a server can remain occupied indefinitely and the job may be postponed. A documented operator tool implements staged REST announcements through /v1/api/announce and an onlyWhenEmpty behavior based on the current player count.
For updates, combine the update and restart in one announced maintenance window. Do not let an update task race a separate restart task; coordinate their schedules so the save, shutdown, update, and startup happen in a known order.
Backups and rollback protection
Enable Palworld backup saves carefully
Palworld’s backup setting bIsUseBackupSaveData enables backup save data. The official guidance notes that it increases disk load, so monitor available space and disk activity rather than enabling it blindly on a constrained host.
Make a separate copy before changes
A backup inside the same disk or container does not protect against disk loss or a damaged update. Copy the save directory to separate storage before major Palworld updates, image changes, configuration edits, or script changes. A provider workflow can combine the backup with the scheduled restart, but verify where the copy is stored and how long it is retained.
Prove that recovery works
Restore a copy to a test instance or otherwise verify that the files can be read. A backup that has never been checked is only an assumption. Keep the original save untouched until the restarted server has loaded successfully and players can confirm their recent progress.
Verification checklist for every deployment
- RCON responds to
Infofrom the scheduler host. - The password is not exposed in task listings, container logs, or world-readable scripts.
- Each warning appears in full, with the intended remaining time.
Savecompletes beforeShutdownis sent.- The shutdown uses seconds appropriate to the chosen countdown.
- The supervisor or container policy starts exactly one Palworld process after exit.
- The server accepts game connections and RCON commands after startup.
- Logs show warning, save, exit, startup, and any update steps in order.
- A tested backup exists before the first production run.
Troubleshooting automatic restarts
No warnings appear
Check RCONEnabled, RCONPort, the password, firewall rules, server address, and the client’s authentication flags. Run Info manually from the same account and host used by the scheduler. If that fails, the script should not continue to the broadcast stage.

Review quoting and command parsing in the RCON client. The cited Windows example uses underscores in broadcast arguments because spaces may be split by the client. Test the exact string in a controlled window and use the escaping method required by your client.
The server stops and stays down
Inspect the Docker restart policy, systemd service status, wrapper output, or provider restart setting. A clean Palworld shutdown is not itself a process supervisor. Add unless-stopped or always where appropriate, or configure the service to start after exit and at host boot.
Players lose recent progress
Increase the warning lead time, send Save before Shutdown, and verify that the backup copy contains the latest files. Avoid forcing a restart while players are in high-risk activities, and defer when the server is occupied if your tooling supports that behavior.
An update collides with the restart
Place update and restart jobs in one maintenance window, announce the boundary, and ensure only one job owns the shutdown. Operator tooling that supports planned announce boundaries can keep players informed while the update is applied.

Choose the option that gives you observable logs, protected secrets, a tested save, and a guaranteed startup path. The most elaborate scheduler is not safer if nobody can tell whether RCON, the save, or the supervisor failed.
