Assetto Corsa Content Manager can download missing cars and tracks when a player joins, but only if the server publishes a correct content.json manifest and the HTTP service can be reached. Managed hosting usually builds that manifest through a CM Auto Download switch; a self-hosted AssettoServer setup requires you to define download URLs or local archives, enable server details, expose the HTTP port, and keep package versions synchronized.

What Content Manager auto-download actually does
Auto-download is a handoff between the server and Content Manager (CM). The server advertises the cars and track selected for its active lobby, then publishes where each required package can be obtained. CM compares that list with the client installation, downloads missing items, installs them, and allows the join to continue when the installed files match the server’s expected checksums.

It is a manifest, not a repair utility: it connects the currently selected entry-list cars and map to either web download locations or archives stored alongside the server. Enabling the feature cannot fix a corrupt ZIP, make two different mod releases compatible, or correct a client that has the wrong files.
- Only cars in the active entry list and the selected track/layout are offered.
- Other mods sitting in a host’s file storage are not automatically advertised.
- A successful transfer does not guarantee a successful join; version and checksum validation still applies.
Assetto Servers’ provider guide, updated August 26, 2026, describes CM Auto Download as publishing download information for selected content rather than repairing archives or reconciling incompatible versions.

Choose a managed host or self-hosted AssettoServer
Your first decision determines how much of the manifest and web service you maintain. The two routes support the same client workflow but have different operational responsibilities.

AssettoServer supports Windows and Linux. Its documentation identifies version 0.0.54 on the cited introduction page and says the easiest starting point is creating a configuration with Content Manager.

Complete these checks before changing the server configuration:
- Install the intended car packages and track layout on the server, and decide which exact release will be used for the event.
- Open the server’s entry-list or Content Manager preset and identify the cars that will actually be placed on the grid.
- Confirm the selected map and layout; changing either changes the required download set.
- Obtain direct download links from the mod author or an authorized host, or prepare archives that you are permitted to serve yourself.
- Record the version shown in Content Manager’s Author field for each mod that has one.
- Reserve a reachable HTTP port and check firewall/router rules if the server is self-hosted.
- Keep a separate client installation, or remove the custom car and track from a test installation, so you can perform a genuine missing-content test.
Set up CM Auto Download on managed hosting
Panel labels vary, but the documented workflow is consistent: select the lobby content, enable the feature, and apply the selection so the host writes the manifest.

- Open the server’s content or entry-list editor. Add every car that can appear in the active session. Do not rely on files merely being uploaded to the account.
- Select the track and layout. The manifest follows this active map choice; an unused layout is not offered to joining clients.
- Turn on CM Auto Download. This option may be available only on a paid Assetto Corsa hosting plan.
- Press Apply Selection. The panel generates or refreshes
cfg/cm_content/content.jsonwith download entries for the selected cars and map. - Restart the server. A restart ensures the running process is using the newly generated metadata rather than an older in-memory configuration.
- Copy the server’s Join in CM link. Use that link for testing; it launches the Content Manager join flow that reads the server’s advertised content.
If you replace a ZIP, add or remove a car, change the track or layout, or switch a download source, return to the content selector and press Apply Selection again. A previous manifest can continue pointing to an obsolete package even though the panel now contains a newer file.
Configure auto-download on a self-hosted AssettoServer
Self-hosting gives you control over delivery, but every path and network dependency is yours to maintain. Use the Content Manager server preset to create the initial configuration, then choose one of the two supported delivery styles.
Install and create the server configuration
- Install AssettoServer on Windows or Linux and create a server folder that will remain stable when the service starts.
- Use Content Manager’s server configuration workflow to create or edit the preset, as recommended by the AssettoServer documentation.
- Populate the entry list with the cars that can be selected in the lobby and choose the track and layout.
- Locate the generated
cfg/cm_content/content.json; this is the file you will validate after every content change.
Option 1: publish authorized direct URLs
In the Content Manager server preset, choose the download URL or share mode and enter a direct URL supplied by the mod author or an authorized host. The URL must deliver the archive itself rather than an HTML landing page, login screen, or expiring link that the joining client cannot access.
AssettoServer’s FAQ specifically advises: “Please use the download links the authors of the content you’re using provide unless you’re explicitly allowed to reupload them for yourself.” Do not mirror a mod merely to make your own setup easier when its author has not granted permission.

After saving the preset, inspect the resulting manifest and confirm that each URL corresponds to the exact package used by the server. If a host changes or removes a file, the manifest may remain syntactically valid while every new client fails to download it.
Option 2: serve local archives with file entries
You can select or repack the server’s packed archive, keep it under the server root or another known path, and reference it with a file entry in content.json. Relative paths such as cfg/cm_content/car_name.zip are supported.
- Keep the archive in the path recorded by the manifest.
- If you move the server directory, update every affected path; a relative path is resolved from the new server location.
- Do not replace an archive without regenerating or rechecking the manifest and testing the new checksum.
- Use a package that contains the same car or track files installed on the server, not a similarly named release.
Expose server details and the HTTP service
Set EnableServerDetails: true in extra_cfg.yml. The AssettoServer FAQ identifies this setting as required for the server description and content metadata to be exposed to clients.
Then make the configured server HTTP port reachable from the internet. AssettoServer development documentation lists ServerHTTPPort as a server setting and describes HTTP-served resources. Check all of the following:

- The process is listening on the port you configured.
- The operating-system firewall permits inbound TCP traffic to that port.
- Your router or cloud security group forwards the port to the correct machine when applicable.
- The public address used by clients resolves to that machine and is not limited to
localhostor a private LAN address.
A manifest can be perfectly formed and still appear broken to players if the HTTP endpoint is blocked. Test from a network outside the server’s LAN rather than relying only on a local browser.
Understand the manifest’s important values
You do not need to hand-author every field when Content Manager generates the file, but you do need to understand what can invalidate it.

A stale or mismatched package can download successfully and still fail checksum validation. Treat the version value and archive contents as a pair: changing one without the other creates a misleading “download worked” result.

Testing from a computer that already has every mod installed checks only that the client can join. It does not prove that the server exposes metadata, that the URL is reachable, or that CM can install the package.
- Restart after configuration changes. Make sure the server is running the current manifest and HTTP settings.
- Use the Join in CM link. Open it from a separate installation or a test client where the custom car and track have been removed.
- Confirm both missing items are detected. Content Manager should identify the custom car and the selected track/layout rather than reporting only a generic connection failure.
- Start the download and watch the result. Verify that each archive transfers from the advertised URL or local file entry and is installed into the expected content folders.
- Join only after installation completes. The final join is meaningful only when CM has finished its checksum and version checks.
- Repeat after every content change. Replace an archive, alter a source, or change the entry list, then run this test again before an event.
For a stronger test, perform the first attempt from an external internet connection. That catches firewall, router, DNS, and private-address mistakes that a local client can hide.

Maintain the server between races
Make manifest maintenance part of your event checklist rather than treating it as a one-time switch.
- Freeze the car, track, layout, and package versions for the event.
- Replace or add archives only through an authorized source.
- Regenerate the manifest after every replacement, selection change, path change, or URL change.
- Restart the server and inspect the active configuration.
- Run the clean-client download test from outside the server’s local network.
- Keep a copy of the working archives and configuration so a failed update can be rolled back to the last known-good set.
This discipline matters because the active lobby selection, manifest entries, HTTP availability, and file checksums are separate dependencies. A failure in any one of them can look like a generic “content missing” message to a driver.
