The short answer: connect AR glasses directly only to a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort (DP) Alt Mode and supplies sufficient power. A USB-C shape by itself does not guarantee video. Supported USB-C iPhones, compatible Android phones, and laptops with USB-C DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 4 can usually mirror or extend a screen. Lightning iPhones, HDMI-only laptops, and phones without DP Alt Mode need an active, correctly powered video adapter.
What AR glasses need from the host device
Most consumer AR glasses behave like a very small external monitor. They need three things from the phone or computer:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A video signal: normally DisplayPort over USB-C, also called DP Alt Mode.
- Power: enough current to keep the glasses’ displays and electronics running.
- A compatible cable or conversion path: a full-featured USB-C video cable for a direct connection, or an active adapter when the source uses HDMI, Lightning, or another protocol.
XREAL’s connection guidance states that “the phone must support video output via USB-C.” VITURE’s compatibility guide recommends looking for the terms “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DP Alt Mode,” “Alt DP over USB-C,” or “Thunderbolt 4” in the host-device specifications. A port labeled only for charging or data will not produce an image, even though the plug fits.

Basic display mirroring and vendor-specific spatial features are separate. A phone may show its screen in the glasses without supporting head tracking, 3D modes, a virtual multi-monitor workspace, or other software features advertised for a particular glasses ecosystem.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Check compatibility before plugging anything in
Identify the exact host model
Compatibility is model-specific, especially on Android. Record the complete model name and regional variant, then check its technical specifications or support documentation for external-display output. Do not assume that two phones in the same family share the same USB-C capabilities.
Check the port protocol, not just the connector
- USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode: suitable for a direct glasses connection.
- Thunderbolt 4: carries DisplayPort video and is suitable when the laptop’s port and cable support the required display mode.
- USB-C charge/data only: unsuitable for direct video.
- HDMI or full-size DisplayPort: requires an active converter that outputs USB-C display video; a passive cable is not enough.
Confirm power availability
A phone can support video and still fail because it cannot provide enough current. The symptom is often an image that flashes on and off, glasses that repeatedly restart, or a black screen after a few seconds. Keep a powered adapter or dock available for phones and for adapters that have a separate power input.
Use a video-rated cable
For a direct connection, use the cable supplied with the glasses or a certified, full-featured USB-C cable rated for video and power. Many inexpensive USB-C cables carry charging and USB data only. Cable length, connector quality, and the cable’s supported DisplayPort mode can also affect stability.
Connect AR glasses to a USB-C iPhone
Apple documents that iPhone uses the DisplayPort protocol for connections to USB-C displays. The supported range includes iPhone 15 models and iPhone 16 models except iPhone 16e. Apple’s current support documentation lists external-display connections up to 4K at 60 Hz for supported USB-C iPhones, although the glasses, cable, and application can impose lower limits.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Step-by-step setup
- Confirm the model. Verify that the iPhone is a supported USB-C model and that its specifications include external-display output. Do not treat the USB-C connector on an iPhone 16e as proof of display compatibility.
- Prepare the glasses. Charge them if they contain a battery, or have the glasses’ power accessory ready. Remove any protective caps from the video connector.
- Connect a full-featured USB-C cable. Plug one end into the glasses and the other into the iPhone. Use the supplied cable when possible.
- Wake and unlock the iPhone. Some glasses remain blank until the phone is unlocked and the display handshake completes. Accept any accessory or trust prompt that appears.
- Choose the display behavior. iPhone generally mirrors its screen. An individual app may present a second-screen experience, but iOS does not automatically provide the same desktop interface available through Samsung DeX.
- Test audio and controls. Start a local video or a supported app, check the glasses’ speakers, and adjust volume from the iPhone or the glasses’ controls.
When a powered adapter is necessary
If the glasses shut down, flicker, or go black while the phone remains active, the iPhone may be hitting its accessory-power limit. Add a powered USB-C adapter designed for XR or external displays, such as VITURE’s USB-C XR Charging Adapter Ultra, and connect a charger to the adapter’s power input. VITURE warns that smartphone power limits can cause occasional shutdowns or blackouts. Follow the adapter’s port labels: one port is normally for the phone, one for the glasses, and one for charging.
A powered adapter can solve a power shortage; it cannot add DisplayPort output to an iPhone model that does not support it.
Connect AR glasses to a Lightning iPhone
iPhone 14 and earlier families use Lightning rather than USB-C. A passive Lightning-to-USB-C cable cannot create a DisplayPort signal for the glasses. The reliable route is a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter followed by an active HDMI-to-USB-C display adapter that is designed for USB-C monitors or glasses and accepts external power.
Step-by-step setup
- Attach Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter to the iPhone’s Lightning port.
- Provide power to the Lightning adapter. Plug a charger into its Lightning power input. This reduces the chance of a failed handshake and is required for some protected or high-power content.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter’s HDMI output to the HDMI input of an active HDMI-to-USB-C display adapter.
- Power the active HDMI-to-USB-C adapter through its USB-C or other power input, following its labeling. The adapter must generate USB-C display output; a passive HDMI cable with a USB-C plug will not work.
- Connect the adapter’s USB-C display output to the glasses. Use the glasses’ recommended cable and select the correct HDMI source if the adapter or dock offers more than one.
- Unlock the iPhone and start playback. The Lightning Digital AV Adapter mirrors what is displayed on the iPhone and supports video and audio up to 1080p HD according to Apple’s product documentation.
Why this chain is more demanding
The Lightning adapter converts the phone’s output to HDMI. The active HDMI-to-USB-C unit then converts HDMI into the USB-C display signal and often injects power. Every stage must support the required resolution, refresh rate, HDCP behavior, and audio path. If any stage is passive, underpowered, or designed only for USB-C laptop monitors with a different signal direction, the glasses may remain black.

Connect AR glasses to an Android phone
Android support cannot be determined from the USB-C connector alone. Check the exact handset specification for “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DP Alt Mode,” “Alt DP over USB-C,” or an explicit statement that the phone supports video output via USB-C.
Direct USB-C setup
- Look up the exact model and region. Use the manufacturer’s specification page or manual, not a listing for a similar phone.
- Confirm DP Alt Mode. If the specification mentions only USB 2.0, charging, or file transfer, that does not establish video support.
- Connect the supplied or certified full-featured USB-C cable between the phone and the glasses.
- Unlock the phone. Watch for an external-display, USB-accessory, or desktop-mode prompt and select the offered display option.
- Test mirror or desktop output. Many Android phones mirror the home screen; some provide a desktop interface or app-specific second screen.
Samsung DeX phones
Samsung phones that support DeX can use an HDMI adapter or DeX dock as the external-display path. Connect the phone to the adapter or dock, power the dock if required, connect HDMI to an active HDMI-to-USB-C adapter for the glasses, and select the correct HDMI source. DeX may present a desktop-style interface rather than a simple mirror. The exact DeX behavior depends on the phone, Android version, adapter, and display resolution.
What to do when an Android phone lacks DP Alt Mode
A passive USB-C cable cannot turn a charge/data-only port into a video output. A manufacturer-approved conversion dock may work only when it explicitly supports that phone and the glasses. Generic USB graphics solutions use a different technology, may require drivers or an app, and are not interchangeable with a DisplayPort Alt Mode connection.

USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 laptop
- Inspect the laptop port. Look for a DisplayPort logo, a monitor icon, or Thunderbolt 4 marking. Consult the manual because some laptops include several USB-C ports with different capabilities.
- Connect the glasses directly with a video-rated USB-C cable. If the laptop has multiple compatible ports, use one connected to the discrete GPU or the port identified for display output.
- Set the display mode. In Windows, open
Settings > System > Display, select the glasses, and choose Duplicate (mirror) or Extend. In macOS, openApple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the glasses, and configure mirroring or arrangement. - Choose resolution and refresh rate. Start with the recommended setting. A higher mode may exceed the glasses, cable, dock, or laptop-GPU limit.
HDMI-only or DisplayPort-only laptop
Use a compatible active HDMI-to-USB-C or DisplayPort-to-USB-C display adapter, or a powered dock that explicitly outputs USB-C video for monitors or glasses. The adapter must be directional: source HDMI or DisplayPort goes in, USB-C display output goes out. A USB-C-to-HDMI cable used backward will not perform this conversion.

Connect the laptop to the adapter, supply power through the adapter’s power input, then connect its USB-C display output to the glasses. In Windows or macOS, apply the mirror or extend setting after the adapter is detected.
Protected video and HDCP
A laptop may detect the glasses while a streaming service displays a blank window. Check the adapter and dock’s HDCP support, firmware, and documented resolution limits. Protected content can fail through an adapter that handles ordinary desktop output but not the service’s required HDCP version.
Connection methods compared
| Method | Source requirement | Power considerations | Typical result | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct USB-C DP Alt Mode | Phone or laptop USB-C port with DisplayPort video | Host must provide enough current; a powered accessory may be needed | Mirrored phone screen or laptop mirror/extend mode | USB-C shape does not prove video support |
| Thunderbolt 4 | Laptop Thunderbolt 4 port and compatible cable | Usually strong laptop power, but the glasses still draw from the host or dock | External display with Windows or macOS controls | Not every USB-C port on the same laptop is Thunderbolt |
| Lightning to HDMI to active USB-C | Lightning iPhone, Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter, active HDMI-to-USB-C adapter | Both conversion stages may need charging | Mirrored iPhone display, up to 1080p HD from Apple’s Lightning adapter | More cables, conversion limits, and HDCP compatibility checks |
| HDMI or DisplayPort laptop to active USB-C | Video-output port plus directional active adapter or powered dock | Adapter power input is often essential | Mirror or extend on Windows/macOS | Passive cables and reversed adapters do not convert the signal |
Mirror mode, extend mode, and spatial features
Phone mirroring
Most iPhone connections mirror the phone’s display. The glasses show the same apps, menus, and video that appear on the handset. This is useful for private viewing but does not create a separate desktop workspace.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
Laptop mirroring and extension
Duplicate or mirroring shows the same image on the laptop and glasses. Extend creates a second desktop area, allowing a window to move into the glasses while the laptop retains its own screen. If the glasses appear in display settings but the pointer or window does not move there, the system is probably still in mirror mode or the display arrangement is incorrect.
Spatial features are a separate compatibility layer
Display output alone does not guarantee six-degree-of-freedom tracking, pinned virtual screens, 3D video, or vendor-specific controls. Those features can require a particular glasses model, phone sensor, operating-system version, companion app, or a dedicated accessory. First establish a stable 2D display connection, then check the glasses manufacturer’s requirements for spatial functions.
Troubleshoot a black screen, shutdown, or missing display
No power or the glasses repeatedly restart
- Connect a charger to the powered adapter or dock.
- Try the glasses’ supplied cable and confirm that it is fully inserted at both ends.
- On a phone, add a powered XR charging adapter rather than relying on the handset’s accessory-power budget.
- Test with the phone unlocked and the glasses’ battery charged.
The phone or laptop does not detect the glasses
- Verify DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4 for the exact port and model.
- Try a different compatible USB-C port on the laptop.
- Replace a charge-only cable with a full-featured video cable.
- Disconnect other docks, hubs, and USB devices that may change power or display negotiation.
- Restart the host with the glasses disconnected, then connect after the operating system loads.
The adapter is connected but the image is black
- Confirm that the adapter is active and directional. HDMI-to-USB-C display adapters are not interchangeable with USB-C-to-HDMI cables.
- Supply power to every adapter input that requires it.
- Select the correct HDMI input or dock output.
- Lower the laptop’s resolution or refresh rate to a mode documented by the glasses and adapter.
- Check HDCP support when only protected video is blank.
One phone works and another does not
This usually indicates model-level compatibility rather than a defective pair of glasses. Compare the two phones’ specifications for DisplayPort output, power delivery, desktop-mode support, and regional model numbers. A matching USB-C connector is not a meaningful compatibility test.
The screen works but spatial features do not
Treat this as two separate problems. The display path is functioning; now verify the glasses model, companion software, phone sensors, permissions, and operating-system requirements for the spatial feature. Do not replace a working video cable solely because a vendor feature is unavailable.
A practical adapter-buying checklist
- For a supported USB-C phone: start with a full-featured USB-C video cable. Add a powered USB-C display adapter if the phone cannot supply stable power.
- For a Lightning iPhone: use Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter, an HDMI cable, and an active, powered HDMI-to-USB-C adapter designed for USB-C displays or glasses.
- For Samsung DeX: use a compatible HDMI adapter or DeX dock, then an active HDMI-to-USB-C path if the glasses require USB-C input.
- For a USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 laptop: connect directly with a video-rated cable and configure mirror or extend mode.
- For an HDMI-only laptop: choose a powered, directional HDMI-to-USB-C display adapter or dock with documented monitor/glasses support.
Before buying, verify the adapter’s supported input and output direction, maximum resolution and refresh rate, power-input requirement, HDCP behavior, audio support, and compatibility with the specific glasses model. “USB-C” in a product title is not enough evidence that it can generate a USB-C display signal.
Final pre-flight check
- Write down the exact phone, laptop, and glasses models.
- Confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4 on the source port, or identify the required active conversion path.
- Use a cable rated for video, not charging alone.
- Prepare a charger for the phone, adapter, or dock.
- Connect in source-to-display order and wait for the host to detect the glasses.
- Set mirror or extend mode in the operating system, then test a non-protected local video.
- If the display is stable but spatial features are missing, troubleshoot software and sensor requirements separately.
The dependable rule is simple: direct USB-C works only when the port carries DisplayPort video and enough power. When the source uses Lightning, HDMI, or a USB-C port without DP Alt Mode, use an active conversion device with its own power path rather than a passive cable.
