To make an indoor camera private while someone is home, add a HomeKit Secure Video-compatible camera to the Apple Home app, assign it to a room, and set that camera’s Recording Options separately for When Home and When Away. The strictest indoor setting stops both streaming and recording at home, then switches to Stream & Allow Recording when every home member has left.
Apple Home makes that switch from the locations of devices belonging to people in the home. A compatible home hub—Apple TV 4K or HomePod—is required for HomeKit Secure Video processing and remote access, and an iCloud+ plan is needed for the supported recording workflow.

What Home and Away camera modes actually control
Home and Away are per-camera recording states in the Home app, not a single privacy switch for every camera. Each camera can have one behavior when the home is occupied and another when the home is empty. That lets you keep an entry camera active while disabling a camera in a bedroom or living room whenever anyone is present.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Stop streaming and recording: the strongest privacy choice for an indoor camera. The camera does not provide a live feed and does not retain Home-state clips.
- Stop streaming but allow recording: live viewing is disabled, but motion or other configured events can still create recordings. This protects against live viewing, not against footage being captured inside the home.
- Stream and allow recording: live video and event recording remain available. It is useful for pets or children but gives occupants the least privacy.
- Stream and allow recording when away: the usual security setting for an empty house.
These controls are Apple Home’s Recording Options. A privacy mode in a camera maker’s separate app may turn a lens off or close a shutter, but it is not automatically the same setting as Apple Home’s Home/Away behavior. Check which app is controlling the camera before diagnosing an unexpected recording.
Requirements before you begin
A camera listed for HomeKit Secure Video
Choose a model explicitly identified as compatible with Apple HomeKit Secure Video, not merely one that works with a manufacturer’s iPhone app or supports basic HomeKit controls. Compatibility can depend on firmware and region, so verify the current listing and update the camera before adding it.
A home hub
Use an Apple TV 4K or HomePod as a home hub. The hub performs the private analysis and encryption needed for HomeKit Secure Video and provides remote access when you are away. Without a hub, you may be able to view a basic live feed from some accessories, but the complete secure recording workflow and automatic remote operation are not available.

Apple says HomeKit Secure Video content does not count against the iCloud storage limit. The camera still has to be compatible, signed in to the Apple account used for the home, and connected to the home hub for recording to work.
Set up the camera and assign its room
- Update and power the camera. Install the latest firmware offered by the manufacturer, connect the camera to the network used by your home, and place it where you want it. For an indoor privacy setup, avoid aiming through windows or at areas that do not need monitoring.
- Open the Home app. Use the Apple device that manages the home, tap the add-accessory control, and scan the camera’s HomeKit code or enter the setup code supplied with it.
- Choose the home and room. Give the camera a clear name such as “Hallway camera” and assign the correct room. Room assignment matters when you later identify the camera in notifications, automations, and permissions.
- Confirm the hub. In Home settings, verify that an Apple TV 4K or HomePod is connected as a home hub and shows as available. If the hub is offline, secure recording and remote access can stop even though the camera appears powered.
Configure separate When Home and When Away behavior
- Open the camera settings. In the Home app, open the camera tile, tap its settings button, and select Recording Options.
- Set When Home. For maximum indoor privacy, choose the option that stops streaming and recording. If your household needs an event history but not a live feed, choose the option that stops streaming while allowing recording. If the camera watches a pet or child, streaming and recording can remain enabled, but explain that choice to everyone who lives in the home.
- Set When Away. Select Stream & Allow Recording when you want security coverage after everyone leaves. If you only want event clips and not a continuously available live feed, choose the less permissive option offered by that camera.
- Save and repeat per camera. Recording Options are configured for each camera. Changing an entry camera does not change a bedroom camera, and adding a new camera does not inherit the settings you intended for existing devices.
Option names can differ slightly between camera models or Home app releases. Read the description shown beneath each choice and confirm whether it affects streaming, recording, or both before saving.
Turn on useful notifications without confusing them with recording
Open Home Settings → Cameras & Doorbells to configure notifications. You can choose alerts for detected activity, changes in camera status, or an offline event. Notifications tell you that an event or state change occurred; they do not by themselves determine whether a clip is recorded.
- Enable activity alerts for cameras that should warn you about movement while Away.
- Enable offline alerts for cameras whose loss of power or network access would create a security gap.
- Use narrower activity choices where the camera supports them so routine movement does not produce unmanageable alerts.
- Review notifications after changing Home/Away settings; an alert arriving while Home may indicate that the camera is still allowed to record in that state.
Limit who can view the camera
Go to Home Settings → People, select each person, and review camera access. Share viewing only with people who need it. A person’s permission to control accessories and a person’s permission to view camera footage are separate considerations, so remove camera access when it is no longer necessary.

HomeKit Secure Video footage is analyzed privately and encrypted on the home hub before being uploaded securely to iCloud. Apple describes Home data and HomeKit Secure Video as end-to-end protected so that Apple and other third parties cannot read the video content. Anyone you deliberately share access with can still view footage, so account security and the guest list remain part of the privacy design.
How Apple decides that everyone is home or away
Apple states that the Home app uses the location of devices belonging to members of the home to switch modes. When the last relevant household device leaves, the camera can move from its When Home settings to When Away; when a member’s device returns, it can switch back.
This is a device-location model, not a camera-person-detection model. The result can be wrong or delayed when:
Recommended Free Tools
- a resident’s iPhone or other participating device has location sharing disabled;
- a household member leaves a phone, tablet, or watch at home while the person leaves;
- a device has no network, low battery, or stale location data;
- the wrong person is included in or excluded from the home’s People list;
- another configured household device still reports the person as present.
For that reason, test with the actual devices your household carries. Leave with one household iPhone, wait for the home state to update, and check the camera tile or its Recording Options. Return and verify that the Home behavior is restored. This confirms the trigger for your home; it does not prove that every possible network or location failure will behave identically.

Privacy-focused choices for common rooms
| Use case | When Home | When Away | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom or living room | Stop streaming and recording | Stream & Allow Recording | Strongest occupant privacy; no clips are retained while home is occupied |
| Pet monitoring | Stream and allow recording, or stop streaming while allowing recording | Stream & Allow Recording | You retain visibility at home but occupants are recorded if recording remains enabled |
| Entryway | Stop streaming and recording, unless residents accept monitoring | Stream & Allow Recording | Balances privacy at home with empty-home security |
| Child’s play area | Choose based on consent and household rules | Stream & Allow Recording | Recording may capture visitors or sensitive activity; explain access clearly |
There is no universal “best” setting. The important distinction is whether your chosen Home state still records people inside. Stopping the live stream alone does not make an indoor camera non-recording.
Current camera choices and what to verify
Apple’s current HomeKit Secure Video catalog lists the Eve Cam – Smart Indoor Camera, Aqara G100 Indoor Camera, and Logitech Circle View Apple HomeKit-Enabled Security Camera. Product availability, regional support, firmware requirements, and prices can change, so verify those details immediately before purchase.
| Camera | HomeKit Secure Video listing | Indoor placement | Hardware privacy control | Power and availability notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eve Cam – Smart Indoor Camera | Listed by Apple as compatible | Indoor camera | Not stated in the supplied Apple listing; verify the current hardware | Current price and regional availability not stated; verify before purchase |
| Aqara G100 Indoor Camera | Listed by Apple as compatible | Indoor camera | Not stated in the supplied Apple listing; verify the current hardware | Current price and regional availability not stated; verify before purchase |
| Logitech Circle View Apple HomeKit-Enabled Security Camera | Listed by Apple as compatible | Indoor-capable wired camera | Rear button can quickly disable streaming and recording | Wired; current price and regional availability not stated; verify before purchase |
For an indoor installation, prioritize an explicit HomeKit Secure Video listing and a physical privacy control if you want a way to disable the camera without relying on location detection. A hardware button or shutter is a separate control path from Apple Home’s automatic Home/Away setting.

The home has not recognized the resident’s return
Check the People list, location-sharing permissions, device battery, and network connection for every resident whose presence should affect the mode. A phone left at home can make Apple believe that someone is still present; a phone with stale location data can delay the transition in either direction.
You are viewing a different control system
The camera manufacturer’s app can have its own privacy mode, schedules, or recording service. Those controls do not necessarily change Apple Home’s Recording Options. Check both apps and remove conflicting schedules where possible.
The hub or camera is offline
HomeKit Secure Video processing depends on the home hub. Confirm that the Apple TV 4K or HomePod is online, the camera has power, and the home network is working. An offline camera cannot follow a new state until it reconnects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNotifications are being mistaken for clips
An activity or status notification does not prove that a video was stored. Open the camera’s timeline and review the event, then check the selected recording behavior for the state in which it occurred.
Use a manual fallback for sensitive spaces
Location automation is convenient but cannot account for every human situation, such as a guest arriving, a resident leaving a phone behind, or a family member temporarily disabling location sharing. Keep a manual fallback for rooms where recording would be unacceptable.
- Use a camera’s physical privacy button or shutter when the model provides one; on the Circle View listing, Apple describes a rear button that disables streaming and recording.
- Change the camera’s Recording Options manually before a guest, meeting, or other sensitive activity.
- Use a Home scene or compatible accessory that cuts power to the camera when you need a clearly visible, manual off state. Power removal prevents recording but also removes remote access until the camera restarts.
- Tell every home member which state the camera is in and who can view footage.
Document the fallback near the camera or in household instructions so that disabling a camera is not dependent on one person’s Apple account.
A practical verification checklist
- The camera appears in the Home app and is assigned to the intended room.
- An Apple TV 4K or HomePod is available as a home hub.
- The camera’s When Home setting matches the privacy rule you agreed on.
- The camera’s When Away setting matches the security rule for an empty home.
- Each household member is listed correctly under Home Settings → People.
- Location sharing is enabled for devices that should drive the Home/Away switch.
- Notifications for activity, status changes, and offline events are intentional.
- A real leave-and-return test confirms the state transition.
- A manual privacy control or fallback exists for location failures and guests.
Choosing the right design
For maximum privacy, use an indoor camera that supports HomeKit Secure Video, set When Home to stop streaming and recording, set When Away to stream and allow recording, restrict viewing permissions, and verify the transition with the devices your household actually carries. If you need a pet feed or indoor event history, understand that allowing recording while Home means people in the room can still appear in clips. If location reliability is a concern, select hardware with a physical privacy control and treat it as the final override.
