To set up Apple TV 4K, connect it to power and an HDMI display, select the correct HDMI input, join the internet, and sign in with an Apple Account. An iPhone can transfer your Apple Account and Wi‑Fi details automatically, while manual setup works from the television. After the initial setup, install apps from the App Store, add household profiles, and choose whether to use the included Siri Remote, an iPhone or iPad, Apple Watch, a television remote, a Home-compatible controller, or a learned infrared remote.
For 4K HDR video, use an HDMI 2.0-or-later cable and a television that supports 4K, HDR, or both. Apple TV 4K also needs internet access for services and app downloads; models with an Ethernet port can use a wired router connection instead of Wi‑Fi.

- A television or other HDMI display. The display should support the resolution and HDR format you intend to use.
- An HDMI cable. Apple specifies HDMI 2.0 or later for 4K HDR. An older cable may still show a picture at lower settings, but it is not the stated requirement for 4K HDR.
- Internet access. You can join a Wi‑Fi network during setup. If your model has an Ethernet socket, you can connect it directly to a router with an Ethernet cable.
- An Apple Account. You can create or recover an account separately, but a signed-in account is needed for a complete setup and for services such as the App Store.
- The included Siri Remote or another supported controller. You can begin with the Siri Remote and add an alternative later.
Keep the television remote nearby. You may need it to select the HDMI input, adjust the television’s volume, or enable HDMI-CEC if you want that remote to control Apple TV.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect the hardware and select the right input
- Plug the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on Apple TV 4K and an HDMI input on the television or display.
- Connect Apple TV 4K to power. It starts when power is available; there is no separate power switch.
- Turn on the television and use its remote to select the exact HDMI input used in step one. If the screen stays blank, check the input number and reseat both HDMI plugs before changing settings.
- For 4K HDR, confirm that the cable is HDMI 2.0 or later and that the display supports 4K HDR, 4K, or HDR as applicable. A display that lacks one of those capabilities cannot show that capability even when Apple TV and the cable support it.
The Apple TV welcome screen appears after the display establishes a signal. If you see a message about no signal, troubleshoot the physical connection first rather than attempting account setup.
Complete the first-run setup on the television
Choose language, country, and Siri
Use the Siri Remote’s clickpad to select your language and country or region. The region affects available apps, media, and Siri features. When prompted, choose whether to use Siri where it is supported. You can continue without Siri if it is not available or you do not want voice control.
Connect to Wi‑Fi or Ethernet
Select your Wi‑Fi network and enter its password when prompted. Keep Apple TV within reliable range of the router during this step. If the hardware has an Ethernet port, connect an Ethernet cable from Apple TV to the router instead; the wired option appears as the network connection rather than a Wi‑Fi selection.
A wired connection can simplify setup in a room with weak wireless coverage, but it requires the router and Apple TV to be physically connected. Both methods provide network access for signing in, downloading apps, and streaming.
Use Set Up with iPhone
Choose Set Up with iPhone when the option appears. Unlock an iPhone, hold it close to Apple TV, and follow the onscreen instructions. Apple describes this option as automatically adding your Apple Account and Wi‑Fi settings to Apple TV. The iPhone must be close enough for the transfer and connected in a way that lets it communicate with the Apple TV during setup.

If the transfer prompt does not appear, unlock the iPhone, move it nearer to Apple TV, and make sure the phone is using the intended Wi‑Fi network. You can always select manual setup instead; choosing the manual path does not prevent you from using the iPhone as a remote later.
Set up manually
Select Set Up Manually if you do not have an iPhone available, do not want to transfer settings, or the automatic handoff fails. Enter the Wi‑Fi information on Apple TV, then enter the Apple Account email address and password with the onscreen keyboard. The Siri Remote’s clickpad moves the cursor; its dictation or Siri control can speed up text entry when enabled and supported.
Recommended Free Tools
Manual setup takes longer because each credential is entered on the television, but it produces the same basic result: a networked Apple TV signed in to the selected Apple Account.
Sign in and decide how the household will use accounts
Use one Apple Account for the main profile
The account used during setup becomes the primary signed-in identity for Apple TV services. Check the spelling of the account address before accepting the sign-in. If two-factor verification is requested, complete it on a trusted Apple device or by entering the verification code shown through Apple’s sign-in process.
Do not share an Apple Account password with other household members merely to give them access. Use profiles and Family Sharing features where supported so recommendations and watch history remain separate.

Add profiles for different viewers
Apple TV 4K supports Apple Account profiles and managed profiles. Each profile can keep its own recommendations and watch history, which is useful when several people use the same television.
To add one, open the profile controls on Apple TV and choose the option to add a profile. Follow the prompts to sign in with another Apple Account or create a managed profile, then give it a recognizable name. The exact choices shown can vary by account type and region.
Set up a child or managed profile
Apple documents support for up to five managed profiles. A managed or kid profile can receive age-based restrictions. You can also require a four-digit code when switching profiles, which helps prevent a child from moving to an unrestricted account.
Choose the age level carefully and protect profile switching with a code that children do not know. Restrictions apply to the managed profile; they do not automatically change the settings of every other profile on Apple TV.
Install and organize apps
Download an app from the App Store
- Open the App Store from the Apple TV Home Screen.
- Browse featured categories or select Search and enter the app’s name with the onscreen keyboard, Siri, or dictation.
- Select the app to view its listing, compatibility information, and any price or subscription details shown for your account and region.
- Choose the download or purchase control and authenticate if Apple TV asks for the Apple Account password or another verification method.
- Open the app after installation, then sign in with that service’s account if required.
App and content availability can differ by country or region and by Apple TV hardware model. An app that appears in one country’s store may not be listed in another, and an older model may not meet a newer app’s requirements.

Handle subscriptions and Family Sharing
Many streaming apps install for free but require a separate subscription. Read the price and billing terms shown in the app or App Store before confirming. Where a service supports Family Sharing, use the Apple Account family settings rather than sharing one service password with every viewer. A subscription’s availability and sharing rules are set by the service and can vary by region.
Keep the Home Screen usable
After installing several apps, arrange the most-used ones on the first row or page so they are easy to reach. Move infrequently used apps farther back, and delete apps you no longer need from their Home Screen menu. Removing an app from Apple TV does not necessarily cancel its subscription; cancel recurring billing through the account or service that created it.
Choose a remote: every supported option
The Siri Remote is included, but it is not your only control method. The table shows what each option needs and which controls it normally provides.
| Remote option | Device required | Connection method | Setup effort | Typical controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Siri Remote | Included Siri Remote | Wireless pairing with Apple TV | Low; pair it during setup or from Settings | Clickpad navigation, playback, Siri or search, dictation, and compatible volume control |
| Apple TV Remote on iPhone or iPad | iPhone with iOS 12 or later, or iPad with iPadOS 13 or later | Network connection to Apple TV | Low; open the remote from Control Centre or the App Library | Navigation, playback, text entry, and on-screen volume controls where supported |
| Apple Watch Remote | Apple Watch | Network connection to Apple TV | Low; open Remote and choose Apple TV | Swipes, taps, Digital Crown navigation, and playback |
| Television or receiver remote | HDMI-CEC-compatible television or receiver | HDMI-CEC | Moderate; enable CEC on the display or receiver if necessary | Directional navigation, selection, playback, and often volume |
| Home app remote | Supported network-based home-control remote plus iPhone or iPad | Home network | Moderate; add the remote as an accessory, then assign its room and name | Controls exposed by the accessory and its Home integration |
| Universal infrared remote | Infrared universal remote | Infrared, learned by Apple TV | Moderate; Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote | Commands you teach during the learning sequence, such as navigation and playback |
Use and pair the Siri Remote
The Siri Remote uses a touch-enabled clickpad for directional movement and selection. Press the clickpad to choose an item, swipe across it to move through lists, and use the playback buttons for transport controls. Siri or the search button can accept voice requests or dictation where supported.
If the remote does not respond, place it near Apple TV and follow the pairing prompt shown on screen. Keep the remote charged using its charging connection; a low battery can look like a pairing failure. The exact pairing and charging controls are documented in Apple TV’s User Guide and can vary slightly by Siri Remote generation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Control Apple TV with an iPhone or iPad
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the same network used by Apple TV 4K.
- On an iPhone, open Control Centre and select the Apple TV Remote control. If it is not visible, add the control in Control Centre settings. You can also open Apple TV Remote from the App Library where available.
- On an iPad, open Control Centre and select Apple TV Remote. Apple supports automatic activation for iPadOS 13 or later.
- Choose the Apple TV shown in the device list. If prompted, enter the four-digit code displayed on the television.
- Use the touch surface to navigate, tap to select, and use the playback and text-entry controls. The phone or tablet’s keyboard can make searches and passwords faster than the television keyboard.
Apple states that iOS 12-or-later iPhones and iPadOS 13-or-later iPads can activate remote controls automatically when connected to Apple TV 4K. If Apple TV is missing from the list, verify that both devices are on the same network, disable any network isolation setting on the router, and wake Apple TV before trying again.
Use an Apple Watch as the remote
- Open the Remote app on Apple Watch.
- Choose Apple TV from the available devices.
- Swipe or tap to move through the interface, turn the Digital Crown for movement where supported, and use the playback controls to pause or resume content.
The watch is convenient for basic navigation when the Siri Remote is misplaced, but it is less suitable for long passwords or extensive text searches than an iPhone or iPad.

Use a television, receiver, Home, or infrared remote
HDMI-CEC remote
A supported television or receiver remote can control Apple TV over HDMI-CEC. Turn on the display or receiver’s HDMI-CEC feature using the manufacturer’s settings; the label differs between brands. Then select the television or receiver remote as you would any other input control. CEC behavior varies by equipment, so some buttons may control volume or power while others remain unavailable.
Network-based home-control remote
On an iPhone or iPad, open the Home app and add the compatible remote as an accessory. Assign it to the correct room and give it a clear name. Once the accessory is on the same home network and configured, use the controls exposed by its integration to operate Apple TV. The available buttons depend on the accessory and its Home support.
Universal infrared remote
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote.
- Choose the learning option and point the universal infrared remote at Apple TV.
- Press each requested button when the onscreen guide asks for it. Teach distinct buttons for directional movement, selection, menu or back, and playback as prompted.
- Save the learned layout and test every command from the Home Screen and during playback.
Infrared learning requires line of sight. If one command is unreliable, repeat that button’s learning step with the remote pointed directly at Apple TV and without other infrared devices transmitting at the same time.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The television says No Signal
- Confirm Apple TV has power and that the HDMI cable is fully seated at both ends.
- Select the HDMI input number physically used by Apple TV.
- Try another HDMI input on the television and, if possible, another known-good HDMI cable. For 4K HDR, the replacement cable must be HDMI 2.0 or later.
- Temporarily connect to a display that supports the output you are testing. A display without 4K or HDR support cannot show those formats.
Set Up with iPhone does not appear
- Unlock the iPhone and hold it close to Apple TV.
- Ensure the phone is connected to the intended Wi‑Fi network and that Bluetooth and local-network communication are available to the setup process.
- Restart the setup prompt if necessary, then choose Set Up Manually if the transfer still fails.
Apple TV cannot join Wi‑Fi
- Recheck the network name and password, paying attention to letter case.
- Move Apple TV closer to the router or connect Ethernet if the model includes an Ethernet port.
- Restart the router and Apple TV, then try the network selection again.
An app or program is missing
Check the Apple Account’s country or region, the Apple TV hardware model, and the app’s own availability. Content catalogs and app listings vary by location and device. If an app installed but its content is unavailable, sign in to that service and review its subscription or regional terms.
