There is no documented one-click migration from Google TV to Apple TV 4K. Set up the Apple TV as a new device, then download Apple TV versions of the apps you use and sign in to each provider account. Recreate your folders, app order, profiles and device preferences manually. Google Play purchases and Google TV device settings should not be expected to transfer to Apple’s App Store or tvOS.
You need a television or monitor with HDMI, an HDMI cable, power, broadband internet and an Apple Account. An iPhone or iPad can speed up setup, but every step is also available with the Apple TV remote.

What you need before setting up Apple TV 4K
Gather the hardware and account details before disconnecting your Google TV. This prevents a common problem: reaching the sign-in screen and discovering that a password, two-factor device or network credential is unavailable.

- Display with HDMI: A television, monitor or compatible projector must have an available HDMI input.
- HDMI cable: For 4K HDR, check Apple’s requirements for your model and display. Apple’s setup guidance specifies HDMI 2.0 or later, while its model guidance calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with a 4K HDR television. Use the requirement that applies to your model and TV rather than assuming every cable supports every HDR format.
- Power: Use the supplied power cable or the cable specified for your model.
- Internet: Apple TV 4K can use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A wired connection is useful when the router is near the television or Wi-Fi is unreliable.
- Apple Account: You can create one before setup or sign in during the onscreen process.
- Provider credentials: Have usernames, passwords and verification methods ready for streaming, live-TV, music, sports or other services you plan to reinstall.
- iPhone or iPad (optional): A nearby device signed in to your Apple Account can make account and network entry faster.
How to set up Apple TV 4K
1. Connect the Apple TV to your display
- Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the Apple TV 4K and the other end into an open HDMI port on the television or display.
- Connect Apple TV to power.
- Turn on the television and select the HDMI input used by Apple TV. If the screen is blank, select each HDMI input once and confirm that the Apple TV status light is on.
Do not route the cable through an older receiver, switch or soundbar while troubleshooting the first boot. Connect Apple TV directly to the display so that HDCP, HDR and resolution negotiation involve fewer devices. You can add an audio receiver or switch after basic setup works.

2. Choose language, region and accessibility options
Use the remote to select your language and country or region. Turn on accessibility features such as VoiceOver, Zoom, subtitles or increased contrast if anyone in the household needs them. Region selection matters because app catalogs, Siri behavior, TV-provider support and available content can differ by country.
3. Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet
Select your wireless network and enter its password, or connect an Ethernet cable if your model and installation use wired networking. A network that works on a phone may still block a newly added device through guest-network isolation, MAC filtering or a captive-portal login. If Apple TV cannot join, use the main home network rather than a hotel, school or guest network that requires a web page.
4. Sign in with an Apple Account
Follow the prompts to enter your Apple Account. If you have a nearby iPhone or iPad signed in to the same account, choose the expedited setup option when it appears and follow the instructions on both devices. The automatic route can transfer account and network details more quickly; it does not copy your Google TV app catalog or Google TV settings.
If you use the remote instead, type the account address and password on Apple TV. Complete two-factor authentication when requested. Keep the trusted phone or tablet nearby so you can approve the sign-in code without interrupting setup.
5. Review Siri, provider and household settings
Complete the onscreen choices for Siri, TV-provider sign-in where supported, location-related features and Home settings. You can skip an optional service and configure it later in Settings. Features and available providers vary by country, region and Apple TV hardware, so an option shown in one household may not appear in another.

6. Finish the first-run update
Allow Apple TV to install any offered tvOS update while it has a stable internet connection. Keep it powered during the update. A restart after updating is normal. If the update repeatedly fails, restart the router and Apple TV, verify free storage and try again before installing many apps.
Can you transfer apps and settings from Google TV to Apple TV?
Apple’s setup instructions do not describe a direct Google TV-to-Apple TV transfer for apps, app data or device settings. Google TV and Apple TV use separate operating systems, app stores and account systems. Treat the change as a new setup with selective restoration through each service’s own account.

How to reinstall your apps on Apple TV 4K
Make a short app inventory first
On Google TV, write down the apps you actually use rather than trying to reproduce every installation. Include streaming, music, sports, fitness, cloud-photo, network-TV and utility apps. Record the account or email used for each service. This list also reveals apps that may not have an Apple TV edition.
Install Apple TV versions
- From the Apple TV Home Screen, open the App Store.
- Choose Search and enter the service name with the remote, dictation or a connected keyboard.
- Open the matching listing and check that it is the official app for the service you already use.
- Select Get or the displayed price, authenticate with your Apple Account if requested, and wait for installation.
- Open the app, choose its sign-in method and enter the same provider credentials used on Google TV.
- Test playback, profiles, subtitles and audio before moving to the next app.
App availability is not universal. A service may offer an Android TV app but no Apple TV version, may restrict its Apple TV app to certain countries, or may require a separate subscription tier. If an app is absent from search, check the provider’s current support information rather than installing an unrelated look-alike.
Use Apple’s automatic iPhone or iPad app installation carefully
Apple TV can automatically install Apple TV versions of apps downloaded on an iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple Account. This is convenient for Apple-platform apps, but it does not import Google TV apps, Google Play purchases or tvOS-incompatible versions. Enable the option only if you want the resulting Apple TV Home Screen populated with those Apple-platform apps; otherwise, install from the App Store one at a time.

What happens to subscriptions, purchases and sign-ins?
Provider subscriptions
A subscription is usually managed by the service provider, not by the television operating system. When the provider supports Apple TV, installing its app and signing in with the same account may restore your plan, profile and cloud-saved preferences. Some services use a code shown on the television and a web-based activation page; follow the app’s current instructions. If the app asks you to subscribe again, stop and verify which account you originally used before paying a second time.

Google’s documentation associates Google Play purchases with a Google Account and compatible Android devices. That association does not make an Apple App Store entitlement. A movie, season, app or in-app purchase bought through Google Play may therefore require you to use the original Google-supported device or service. The provider may separately recognize your subscription on Apple TV, but that is a provider policy, not a transfer performed by Apple TV.
Passwords and two-factor authentication
Apple TV setup does not copy passwords from Google TV. Use a password manager, your phone or the provider’s sign-in code flow. For accounts protected by two-factor authentication, approve each new Apple TV login and update the account’s device list if the provider offers that control.
Recreate the Apple TV layout and preferences
Arrange the Home Screen
Highlight an app, press and hold the clickpad, choose the move command and place the app where you want it. Put daily-use services in the first row and less frequently used apps in folders or lower rows. This organization is independent of your previous Google TV arrangement.
Configure video and audio
Open Settings and review Video and Audio. Set resolution, dynamic-range matching, frame-rate matching and audio output according to the display and receiver’s capabilities. If HDR looks washed out, flickers or causes a black screen, temporarily choose a basic SDR format, confirm the HDMI path, then test HDR again. Do not force a mode your television cannot display.

Configure network and privacy
In Settings, review network status, AirPlay access, location services, analytics and app permissions. If Apple TV is moving between homes or networks, forget the old Wi-Fi network and join the new one. Recheck Home settings if multiple household members need control from their own Apple devices.
Set profiles inside each service
Apple TV’s device settings and an app’s profiles are separate. Even after arranging the Home Screen, open each service and select the household member’s profile, subtitle language, maturity controls and playback preferences. Provider-side settings are the ones most likely to follow the account; device-only settings are not.

4K HDR, HDMI and network checks
Verify the HDMI path
For 4K HDR, check three components together: Apple TV model, HDMI cable and display input. Apple’s setup material identifies HDMI 2.0 or later for 4K HDR, while its model guide specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a 4K HDR TV. A cable can be physically compatible yet still be routed through a receiver or switch that limits bandwidth. Connect directly to a suitable TV input while diagnosing picture problems.
Use Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unstable
Streaming quality depends on the connection between Apple TV and your router as well as your internet plan. If video pauses, the app signs out or the App Store stalls, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, restart the router and remove any guest-network isolation. Avoid judging an app’s performance until its installation and the tvOS update have completed.

Troubleshooting after the move
Apple TV shows no picture
- Confirm the TV is on the HDMI input used by Apple TV.
- Disconnect intermediate switches, receivers and adapters, then connect Apple TV directly to the display.
- Try another HDMI input and a cable that meets the model and 4K HDR requirement.
- Power-cycle the display and Apple TV. If a basic picture appears, adjust Video and Audio settings before re-enabling HDR.
An app cannot be found
- Check spelling and search the provider’s exact service name in the Apple TV App Store.
- Confirm that the service offers an Apple TV app in your selected region.
- Look for a provider-supported alternative such as AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad only if the provider documents that method.
- Do not buy the same service again until you know whether your existing subscription is recognized on Apple TV.
The app installs but your account looks empty
- Verify that you used the same provider email, login method or single-sign-on option as on Google TV.
- Check whether you selected the right profile.
- Confirm that the subscription is active in the provider’s account portal.
- Remember that locally stored watch history, downloads and preferences may not be recoverable even when the subscription is valid.
Google Play content is missing
Check the provider’s cross-platform policy and the purchase account. Google Play ownership is not an Apple App Store entitlement. If the content is available through a provider account, sign in with that account; otherwise, access may remain limited to compatible Android devices or the original Google-supported service.
The automatic iPhone or iPad setup does not appear
Place the iPhone or iPad near Apple TV, unlock it, connect both devices to the same network and confirm that it uses the intended Apple Account. If the prompt still does not appear, choose manual setup with the remote. Manual setup is a supported path, not a failure state.
A practical migration checklist
- Confirm the Apple TV model, display capability and HDMI cable requirement.
- Connect Apple TV directly to the television, power it on and choose the correct HDMI input.
- Join Wi-Fi or connect Ethernet.
- Sign in with the intended Apple Account using an iPhone or iPad shortcut, or the remote.
- Complete region, Siri, provider and Home choices that apply to your household.
- Install the tvOS update if offered.
- Use your Google TV app list to search the Apple TV App Store.
- Install only Apple TV versions that are available in your region.
- Sign in to each provider with the existing account and verify the correct profile.
- Recreate app order, folders, display, audio, network and privacy preferences.
- Test one title in every important service before retiring or resetting the Google TV.
What you can and cannot preserve
The reliable part of this move is account-based access: when a provider offers an Apple TV app and stores your subscription or profile online, signing in can restore that provider-side information. The parts that do not have a documented Apple migration path are the Google TV app catalog, local app data, Google TV Home Screen arrangement, device preferences and Google Play App Store ownership. Plan for a clean tvOS setup and use your provider accounts to recover whatever they store in the cloud.
