From there you can browse recommendations, recently played items, playlists, albums and mixes. Apple says full access to songs and Music features requires an Apple Music subscription. If your Apple TV is already connected and configured, the listening portion takes only a few selections; if it is new or reset, allow time for the HDMI, power, network and account setup first.
Apple TV setup and Apple Music setup are two separate steps
Apple Music is built into the Apple TV 4K experience, so you generally do not install a separate app from an app store. There are two jobs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Set up the Apple TV hardware: connect it to your television and power, choose the correct HDMI input, connect it to the internet and complete the on-screen setup.
- Start Apple Music: open the Music app, go to Home and choose music to browse or play.
Keeping these tasks separate makes the process easier to diagnose. A blank television screen is a connection or input issue, while an empty or limited Music experience can relate to the account, subscription, region or Apple TV model. If the Apple TV is already configured and connected, skip directly to the Music app instructions. If it is new or has been reset, gather the requirements below before turning it on.

What you need before starting
| Requirement | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K | The cited Apple Music walkthrough applies to Apple TV 4K. |
| HDMI-equipped HD or 4K television | The Apple TV connects to the television through HDMI. |
| HDMI cable | Required to connect Apple TV 4K to the television. |
| Broadband internet access | Needed for network setup and online Music content. |
| Apple Account | Listed by Apple as an Apple TV 4K setup requirement. |
| Compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a 4K HDR television | Apple specifies this cable for 4K HDR use and notes that it is sold separately. |
Apple’s complete hardware checklist and connection guidance are in its Apple TV 4K setup guide. If your television is HD rather than 4K HDR, the special Ultra High Speed cable qualification does not apply; you still need an HDMI cable suitable for your equipment. The cable is a physical setup requirement, not an Apple Music subscription or software purchase.

Have the Apple Account credentials available even if your immediate goal is only music. Apple lists an Apple Account among the requirements for configuring Apple TV 4K, and the account also determines the personalized rows and access that appear in Music. If another person owns the subscription, decide which account should be used during the on-screen setup rather than assuming that a different account will automatically provide the same catalog access.
Set up Apple TV 4K for the first time
1. Connect Apple TV to the television
Plug the HDMI cable into the Apple TV 4K and an HDMI port on the television. Connect the Apple TV power cable, then turn on the television. For a 4K HDR television, use the compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable Apple specifies. Apple notes that this cable is sold separately, so it may not be in the box with the television or Apple TV.
2. Select the Apple TV HDMI input
Use the television’s input or source control to select the HDMI port where Apple TV is connected. The Apple TV setup screen should appear. If the television shows another source, check the selected input and the cable connection before continuing. Selecting the right input is distinct from opening the Music app: Apple TV cannot display its setup or apps until the television is showing the Apple TV signal.

3. Follow the on-screen setup
Use the Apple TV remote to follow the prompts. Apple’s setup flow includes connecting to a network through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Choose the network method available in your room and complete the prompts shown on the television. Broadband access is part of Apple’s stated preparation because the device needs a network connection for online services, including Music content.
Do not substitute a generic sequence of menus from another Apple device. Apple’s instructions direct you to follow the prompts shown for your Apple TV, and the exact screens can vary with the model and tvOS version. If a prompt asks you to choose between Wi-Fi and Ethernet, select the connection you actually intend to use; the important requirement is completing the network setup displayed by the device.
4. Use an iPhone or iPad to speed up setup, if offered
Apple says a nearby iPhone or iPad can make setup faster. When the Apple TV displays the option, choose Set Up with iPhone or iPad and follow the prompts on both devices. If you do not use this option, continue with the on-screen Apple TV setup instead. The phone or tablet is an optional convenience, not a requirement in Apple’s checklist.
Apple’s guide does not establish a universal sequence of account or authorization screens for every Apple TV model and software version. Use the prompts that appear on your device rather than relying on a button sequence from an older guide. Once the setup finishes and the Apple TV home screen is visible, the hardware portion is complete; you can move to Music without reconnecting the television.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOpen Apple Music and start listening
1. Open the Music app
From the Apple TV home screen, open the Music app. Apple’s current Apple TV guide describes the listening workflow for Apple TV 4K in Start listening in the Music app on Apple TV 4K. You are not looking for a separate download in this workflow; the relevant action is opening the Music app that appears on the Apple TV interface.
2. Go to Home
Choose Home in the Music app. This is the starting point for browsing the rows Apple presents for your account and region, including Top Picks, Recently Played, Made for You and Stations for You. Home is therefore the most useful destination when you are not searching for one specific recording.
The rows are listening choices rather than a promise that every account will see identical artwork or titles. A new account, a different region or a different Apple TV model can produce a different Home screen. If one of the named rows is absent, continue with the rows that are available instead of treating the missing row as proof that setup failed.

3. Choose an album, playlist or mix
Select an item you want to explore. The Music app opens its track list and playback choices. You can then choose Play, Shuffle or an individual song. This is the basic route whether you start from Top Picks, Recently Played, Made for You, Stations for You or another Home row.
4. Use Now Playing controls
When playback begins, Apple opens the Now Playing screen. It provides playback controls and can show lyrics when they are available for the song. Lyrics are conditional: Apple’s wording supports their appearance when available, not a guarantee that every track includes them.
| What you select | What happens |
|---|---|
| Home | Shows recommendation and listening rows such as Top Picks and Recently Played. |
| An album, playlist or mix | Opens the item’s songs and available playback choices. |
| Play | Starts playback from the selected item. |
| Shuffle | Starts the selected item in shuffled order. |
| An individual song | Starts that song directly. |
| Now Playing | Provides playback controls and lyrics when available. |
Do you need an Apple Music subscription?
Apple states: “Full access to songs and features on the Apple Music app requires an Apple Music subscription.” That is the supported requirement for unrestricted access to the Music catalog and features on Apple TV. Apple does not provide a subscription price in the setup guidance, so the setup itself should not be presented as including a particular paid plan or price.
This wording is deliberately specific. It establishes the subscription requirement for full access; it does not establish that every music-related function disappears when you are not subscribed. What you see can depend on the account, region and Apple TV model. The safest expectation is that a subscription is needed when your goal is complete access to songs and Music features, while the exact non-subscriber experience should be judged from the prompts and content shown on the Apple TV.
If you have a subscription, use the Apple Account associated with that subscription during the Apple TV setup or in the prompts presented by the Music app. Apple’s Apple TV-specific guide does not document one fixed first-launch sign-in screen or a separate authorization sequence, so follow the current prompts shown on your television. Do not assume that signing in with an unrelated account will expose the same personalized Home rows or subscription access.

You do not need to repeat the HDMI and network setup merely to open Music. Confirm that the Apple TV is connected to the television and internet, then:
- Open the Music app.
- Select Home.
- Choose a playlist, album or mix.
- Select Play, Shuffle or a song.
If Home does not show the rows you expect, remember that recommendations and content are account- and region-dependent. Apple also warns that features and content can vary by country or region and by Apple TV hardware model. A previously configured Apple TV can therefore be ready to play music even when its Home screen differs from a screenshot in an older tutorial.
If the Music app is visible but the television is on the wrong source, correct the television input first. If the app opens and the device is online, stay within the Music app’s Home route and use the choices Apple presents rather than looking for a separate installation step.
Account sign-in: what is and is not documented
The Apple TV 4K Music instructions document opening the app and browsing from Home, but they do not specify the exact first-launch sign-in screens for every current device. Do not assume that a QR-code or manual-code procedure documented for a third-party smart television or streaming device is identical on Apple TV.

This distinction matters when helping someone remotely. Give instructions for the screen the person can see: first complete Apple TV’s own setup prompts, then open Music and select Home. Avoid telling them to scan a code or enter a device code unless Apple TV itself displays that option. Apple’s documented requirement is an Apple Account for Apple TV setup, while the exact authorization presentation can change with tvOS.
Current interface and regional differences
Apple’s Apple TV User Guide currently identifies tvOS 27 and notes that tvOS 27 introduces redesigned Podcasts and Music apps. Because labels and screen layouts can change between tvOS releases, the durable path is to open the Music app and select Home rather than depend on a particular icon position or visual design.
The Apple TV User Guide is available at Apple TV 4K User Guide. If your Apple TV runs a different tvOS version, some wording or arrangement may differ slightly. A redesigned Music app can move artwork, rows or controls without changing the fundamental setup sequence: hardware first, Music app second, Home for browsing.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple says that not all features and content are available in every country or region or on all Apple TV hardware models. The same qualification applies to the availability and feature set of Apple Music on supported devices. A missing recommendation row, catalog item or feature is therefore not automatically a hardware fault. Check the account and the device’s region context before concluding that the HDMI or network setup is responsible.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Trying to open Music before selecting the Apple TV input: the television must display the Apple TV signal before its home screen and apps can be used.
- Confusing a cable requirement with a subscription requirement: HDMI and power get the hardware connected; an Apple Music subscription is the requirement Apple gives for full access to songs and features.
- Using the wrong cable assumption for 4K HDR: Apple specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a 4K HDR television and says it is sold separately.
- Repeating first-time setup on an already configured device: if Apple TV is working, go straight to Music and Home instead of disconnecting the hardware.
- Expecting every account to have identical Home rows: Top Picks, Recently Played, Made for You and Stations for You are examples Apple lists, while availability can vary by account, region and model.
- Copying third-party device sign-in steps: QR-code or manual-entry instructions for another platform are not automatically Apple TV instructions.
- Following an old screenshot exactly: tvOS 27 includes redesigned Music and Podcasts apps, so the durable instruction is to locate Music and choose Home.
Troubleshooting the setup path
The television shows no Apple TV setup screen
- Confirm that Apple TV 4K is powered.
- Verify that the HDMI cable is connected to both Apple TV and the television.
- Use the television’s input control to select the HDMI port used by Apple TV.
- For a 4K HDR television, check that the cable meets Apple’s compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI requirement.
The Apple TV cannot complete network setup
- Return to the on-screen setup and choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet as appropriate for your installation.
- Follow the network prompts displayed by Apple TV rather than using instructions for another device.
- If setup still cannot proceed, consult Apple’s current Apple TV 4K setup instructions for the connection steps supported for your model.
Music opens but does not show the expected content
- Open Home in the Music app; that is where Apple’s Apple TV guide places browsing recommendations and listening options.
- Check whether your Apple Account has an Apple Music subscription if you need full access to songs and features.
- Allow for country, region and hardware-model differences, which Apple lists as availability constraints.
The screens do not match an older tutorial
Check the tvOS version and use the current Apple TV User Guide. Apple’s interface changes, including the tvOS 27 Music redesign, can alter labels and layout without changing the basic route of opening Music and choosing Home.
A family member expects a different Home screen
Home is shaped by the account and by regional and hardware availability. Compare the account being used and the rows Apple presents on that particular Apple TV before treating different recommendations as a setup defect. Apple’s guidance supports the presence of rows such as Top Picks and Recently Played, not identical results for every listener.
