Apple does not have a separate product or app called “HomeView.” The setup people usually mean is Apple’s Home app on an iPhone or iPad. To connect a compatible HomeKit or Matter accessory, power it on, connect it as required, open Home, choose Add Accessory, scan its code or enter the supplied setup code, then name it and assign it to a room. A home hub is needed for remote control and for Matter setup in Apple’s documented Home flow.
What “Apple HomeView” means
Apple’s current instructions use the name Home for the app that manages HomeKit and Matter devices. “HomeView” is not identified as a separate Apple app or feature. The directions below therefore show how to add and manage accessories in Apple Home.

What you need before pairing
Confirm protocol and compatibility
Check the product packaging or documentation for an Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter logo and confirm which protocol it uses. A device that merely works with AirPlay is not automatically a Home accessory. Apple specifically says Samsung AirPlay-compatible smart TVs do not support HomeKit and cannot be added to Home.

Prepare the accessory
- Power the accessory on and switch it on if it has a physical power control.
- Put it near the iPhone or iPad during setup.
- Connect it to the required Wi-Fi or wired network when the manufacturer’s instructions call for that.
- Locate the setup code. Apple says it may be printed on the accessory, its box or the supplied documentation.
- Keep the QR code, if supplied, visible and readable.
Apple documents eight-digit Apple Home setup codes. Matter codes can be 11 or 21 digits, depending on the accessory and pairing method.
Decide whether you need a home hub
Control while your iPhone or iPad is on the same Wi-Fi network can work locally without a hub. Apple requires a home hub for control while you are away from home. Apple’s current Home instructions also require a hub for Matter accessories in the documented setup flow.
Thread accessories have an additional requirement: a Thread-enabled hub or a supported third-party Thread border router. The exact Apple hardware and configuration matter, so check the accessory’s requirements against Apple’s current compatibility information before buying equipment.

How to add a HomeKit accessory in the Home app
1. Open the correct Home controls
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Home app.
- Tap the Home control, then choose Add Accessory. In some Home app layouts, tap the Add button first and then choose Add Accessory.
- Keep the accessory close to the device while Home searches for it.
Apple’s support instructions also describe tapping Add, selecting Add Accessory, scanning the code or bringing the iPhone near the accessory, selecting the device when it appears and allowing it to join the network if Home asks.
2. Scan or enter the setup code
Point the iPhone or iPad camera at the Home QR code when prompted. If the code does not scan, choose the manual-entry option and type the eight-digit Apple Home code exactly as printed. Keep punctuation and letter substitutions in mind if the accessory’s label distinguishes between similar characters.
For a Matter accessory, follow Home’s Matter pairing screen. A Matter device that was already paired in another app may appear under More options. Select it there and use the other app to generate or display the pairing code if Apple’s instructions direct you to do so.

3. Let Home complete network pairing
Follow every on-screen prompt. Home may ask permission to join the accessory to your network or to finish transferring its configuration. Do not unplug the device during this stage. If the accessory has a separate manufacturer setup step, complete that step first and return to Home.
4. Name the accessory
Choose a short, distinctive name such as “Hall light” or “Bedroom fan.” The name is used in the Home interface and can be spoken to Siri, so avoid names that sound alike or contain unnecessary model numbers. If several devices perform the same function, include a location in each name.
5. Assign a room
Choose the room where the accessory is installed. Room assignment determines where it appears in Home and makes Siri commands less ambiguous. You can change the room later from the accessory’s settings if you move the device.
Turn on iCloud Home data and use the same Apple Account
To keep the home configuration available on your Apple devices, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Find Home in the list of apps using iCloud and turn it on.
Use the same Apple Account on each iPhone or iPad that needs to manage the home. iCloud Keychain is also used to synchronize paired Matter accessories, so Matter setup can fail if the account and keychain settings are inconsistent between devices.

HomePod and HomePod mini
Apple says a HomePod or HomePod mini automatically becomes a home hub when it is set up in the home. A HomePod mini is particularly relevant when you use Thread accessories because it is one of Apple’s documented Thread-capable hub examples. It is not required for every Home installation, so buy one only when its hub or Thread role solves a requirement you actually have.

Apple TV
An Apple TV becomes a home hub after you assign it to a room. On Apple TV, use Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home and select a room. Apple’s documentation distinguishes model and network configuration for Thread; for example, its hub instructions identify Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) with Wi-Fi + Ethernet. Do not assume that every Apple TV 4K configuration supports every Thread use case.
Hub setup checks
If Home does not recognize a hub, Apple advises checking all of the following:
- The home owner, rather than a guest or invited resident, is performing hub setup.
- The correct default user is selected on Apple TV.
- Apple TV, HomePod and iPhone or iPad software are current.
- The hub is powered on and connected to the home Wi-Fi network.
- iCloud Keychain is enabled for the Apple Account.
- Two-factor authentication is enabled for the Apple Account.
After correcting a setting, give Home time to update its hub status before trying the accessory pairing again.
Matter pairing in Apple Home
Adding a Matter device for the first time
Start from Home > Add Accessory and follow the Matter prompts. Use the 11- or 21-digit Matter setup code or scan the Matter QR code supplied with the device. Matter pairing in Apple Home may require a home hub, so complete hub setup before troubleshooting a Matter code that is otherwise valid.
Adding a Matter device that is already in another app
In Home, choose Add Accessory, open More options and select the Matter accessory when it is listed. The app in which the accessory was originally paired may provide the additional pairing code. Apple’s iPhone guide says paired Matter accessories are synchronized using iCloud Keychain.
A Matter device can be shared across compatible ecosystems, but each ecosystem has its own pairing and account steps. Follow the prompts shown by Home rather than attempting to reuse an expired or already-consumed code.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Thread is a network layer, not a replacement for Matter
Thread and Matter describe different parts of a smart-home setup. Matter is the interoperability standard used for device commissioning and control. Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology that some accessories use underneath Matter or another supported protocol.
A Thread accessory therefore needs a Thread-capable hub or a supported Thread border router in addition to the normal Home pairing process. Apple’s cited examples include HomePod mini and particular Apple TV 4K configurations; another Apple guide lists Apple TV 4K and HomePod (2nd generation) among its examples. Because Apple’s lists vary by model and software configuration, verify the precise requirement for your accessory before purchase or installation.
Local control versus control while away
| Use case | What Apple documents | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Control from an iPhone or iPad on the home Wi-Fi | Local control can work without a home hub. | Accessory is paired and the controlling device is on the same network. |
| Control while away from home | Remote control requires a home hub. | A configured HomePod, HomePod mini or compatible Apple TV hub. |
| Matter setup in Apple Home | Apple’s current hub instructions require a home hub in the documented flow. | Configured hub plus the Matter code or QR code. |
| Thread accessory networking | Requires Thread-capable hub or supported third-party Thread border router. | Exact model and configuration must match the accessory’s requirements. |
Organize the home after pairing
Use rooms consistently
Assign every accessory to the room where it is physically installed. Consistent room names make the Home interface easier to scan and let Siri target groups of devices without relying on model names.
Review accessory settings
Open an accessory’s settings in Home to change its name, room or related configuration. If you move a device, update its room immediately so automations and voice commands continue to describe the real layout.
Check Siri commands
Test the exact name you gave the accessory with Siri. If Siri controls the wrong device, rename one of the devices so that each name and room combination is unique.
Create scenes and automations
Scenes operate several compatible accessories together, such as turning off lights and locking compatible devices with one command. Apple’s support instructions say to add the compatible accessories and set up a home hub before creating scenes or automations.

Scenes
- Open Home and choose the option to create a scene.
- Select the accessories and actions that should run together.
- Give the scene a clear name, such as “Leaving home” or “Movie time.”
- Save it and test each accessory before relying on the scene.
Automations
Automations can be triggered by time, location, sensor detection or another supported event. Start with one trigger and a small number of actions. Test it while you are present, then adjust timing or conditions if an accessory responds too early, too late or not at all.
Troubleshooting common setup failures
Home cannot find the accessory
- Confirm that it is powered on and nearby.
- Check that it supports Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter rather than only another control standard.
- Connect it to the required network before reopening Add Accessory.
- Try scanning the printed code again in good lighting, then use manual entry.
- Restart the accessory according to its manufacturer instructions and repeat pairing.
The code is rejected
Make sure you are using the code for the intended protocol. An eight-digit Apple Home code and an 11- or 21-digit Matter code are not interchangeable. If the Matter device was paired elsewhere, use More options and obtain the additional code from the app where it was paired.
Pairing stops when the device joins the network
Keep the iPhone or iPad close to the accessory, verify that the accessory has network access and allow Home to complete the join prompt. A powered hub should be on the same home network. If the hub is offline, correct its Wi-Fi, power or software status before retrying.

This normally indicates that the accessory is paired but no usable home hub is available. Check that a HomePod, HomePod mini or compatible Apple TV is powered on, assigned correctly and connected to the home Wi-Fi. Also check iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication for the home owner’s Apple Account.
Thread device will not finish setup
Confirm that the home has a Thread-enabled hub or supported Thread border router. Verify the exact Apple TV model, network configuration and software version rather than assuming that an Apple TV 4K automatically provides Thread support.
The accessory works in its own app but not in Home
Working in a manufacturer app does not prove HomeKit compatibility. Check the product’s stated Apple Home or Matter support. If it is only AirPlay-compatible, it may not be eligible for Home; Apple’s guidance specifically excludes Samsung AirPlay-compatible smart TVs from HomeKit.
Should you add or buy a hub?
| Question | Decision |
|---|---|
| Do you need control while away from home? | Add or use a configured home hub. |
| Are you pairing a Matter accessory in Apple Home? | Plan for a home hub in Apple’s documented setup flow. |
| Does the accessory use Thread? | Confirm a Thread-enabled hub or supported border router and the exact model requirements. |
| Do you already own a HomePod, HomePod mini or compatible Apple TV? | Check whether it can serve as the hub before buying another device. |
| Do you only need local control on home Wi-Fi? | A hub may not be necessary, depending on the accessory and protocol. |
The practical first step is to inspect your existing Apple hardware and the accessory’s protocol. A HomePod mini is a documented hub option and can be relevant to Thread, while a compatible Apple TV is another path with model and configuration caveats. Neither device is automatically required for every Home installation.
