How to Set Up Apple Home (HomeKit) Accessories and Automations

To set up a smart-home device, confirm that its specific model supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter, then add it in the Home app on an iPhone or iPad. You can group devices into scenes and make automations run them in response to a time, location, accessory activity, or sensor. A home hub is useful for features such as remote control and automations, but not every accessory needs one just to be added.

Before you add an accessory

Check the accessory’s packaging or manual for explicit Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter compatibility. Also look for required firmware updates, manufacturer-app setup, or extra hardware; compatibility and prerequisites can vary by model. Apple recommends using an iPhone or iPad with current software and Bluetooth enabled. Before adding the device, make sure it is powered on and connected to the network. Apple’s accessory setup guide gives the same basic readiness checks.

  • Keep the iPhone or iPad, existing accessories, and any home hubs on the same Wi-Fi network during setup.
  • Have the accessory’s Home or Matter setup code available; it may be printed on the device, packaging, or instruction sheet.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if the device needs an update or must first be configured in its own app.

Add the accessory in the Home app

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Home app.
  2. Tap the Add button, or tap Home and choose Add Accessory. Follow the prompts.
  3. When asked, scan the accessory’s QR code or enter its setup code. For Matter devices, use the Matter setup code if prompted.
  4. Choose a name and assign the accessory to a room. Use a clear name: Apple notes that the accessory name can also be used with Siri.
  5. Finish the prompts, then check that the accessory appears in the assigned room and responds as expected.

The Home app supports both HomeKit and Matter accessories, so the device does not need to be described as HomeKit-only to work with Apple Home. Exact compatibility and setup steps remain model-specific.

Know when Matter, Thread, or a home hub matters

A home hub is not a universal prerequisite for pairing every Apple Home accessory. Apple identifies hubs as enabling capabilities including remote control while away, shared control, and automations. HomePod mini and HomePod become hubs during setup; Apple TV becomes a hub when it is added to a room. See Apple’s home hub guidance for current details.

Matter and Thread have additional qualifications. Apple’s iPhone setup guide says Matter accessories require a home hub. For Thread accessories, Apple describes a Thread-enabled home hub as required for features such as running automations, notifications, and control while away. Its guide also describes local pairing and management of Thread accessories on supported Thread-enabled iPhones, sometimes after a manufacturer update. These capabilities depend on the accessory, Apple device, and software version, so check the current documentation for the exact models involved rather than assuming local pairing means every hub feature is available.

Apple’s named Thread-enabled hub options in that guide include Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and a compatible third-party Thread border router. Verify compatibility for the particular accessory and hub before purchase or setup.

Create a scene for coordinated control

A scene lets you set several accessories to chosen states together—for example, a scene could turn selected lights on and adjust a compatible accessory. In the Home app, choose Add Scene, select a suggested scene or create one, give it a name, and choose the accessories and states you want. Test the result, then save it. Apple’s guide explains that scenes control multiple accessories at the same time: Create scenes and automations with the Home app.

On iPhone, the first accessory you select determines the scene’s room assignment. Choose that first device with the intended room in mind.

Create an automation that responds to a trigger

An automation runs a scene or changes accessories when a selected condition occurs. Apple’s iPhone guide describes triggers based on arrival or departure, time, accessory control, and sensor detection.

  1. In Home, choose Add Automation.
  2. Select the trigger type and set its conditions—for example, a time or a supported sensor event.
  3. Choose the accessories or scene that should respond, then set the desired states.
  4. Review the automation, save it, and test that the trigger and response work as expected.

Location-based automations depend on location-sharing settings. If an arrival or departure trigger does not behave as expected, check those settings as well as the automation’s selected conditions.

  • Confirm compatibility: Verify that the exact model supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter, and check whether it needs a manufacturer app, firmware update, or additional hardware.
  • Check power and connectivity: Make sure the device is on and has network connectivity. Keep the iPhone or iPad, existing accessories, and hubs on the same Wi-Fi network during setup.
  • Check the phone settings: Use an iPhone or iPad with current software and Bluetooth enabled.
  • Review the code and instructions: Make sure you are scanning or entering the correct Home or Matter code and following the accessory maker’s setup steps.
  • Reset only when directed: If the accessory was paired before, use the manufacturer’s instructions for resetting it; reset procedures vary by device.

If an accessory pairs but an automation or away-from-home feature does not work, check whether that feature requires a home hub or a Thread-enabled hub for your specific setup. Pairing locally and having hub-supported features are not always the same thing.

Choose a setup path by capability, not just brand

When deciding whether an accessory will fit your setup, compare the exact model’s Apple Home compatibility and protocol with the feature you want to use. Check whether the desired action is local pairing or a hub-dependent capability, whether Thread support is relevant, whether manufacturer setup or extra hardware is required, and whether Home supports the trigger and response you need. Brand names alone do not establish model-level compatibility.
