Every Apple Home-compatible camera can send motion alerts. If the camera supports HomeKit Secure Video, you can also limit alerts by time, whether someone is home, clip-recording status, motion category, and selected areas of the image.
What Apple Home camera notifications can do
Apple Home has two levels of camera alerting. The basic level is motion notification: an Apple Home-compatible camera can alert you when it detects movement. HomeKit Secure Video adds event filtering and recording controls, so an alert can depend on more than movement alone.

With HomeKit Secure Video, the Home app can use these factors when deciding whether to notify you:
- Time of day
- Whether someone is home or away
- Whether a clip is recorded
- Any detected motion or a selected motion category
The available controls depend on the camera and its HomeKit Secure Video support. Check the individual model’s compatibility rather than assuming that every Apple Home-compatible camera supports every filter.

What you need before changing the setting
- An iPhone with the Home app and a camera added to the relevant Home.
- An Apple Home-compatible security camera for basic motion alerts.
- HomeKit Secure Video support on the camera if you want specific-motion filters or Activity Zones.
- For home/away behavior, member devices whose locations the Home app can use to determine whether the home is occupied.
Apple’s iPhone Home guide currently surfaced in the iOS 27 edition. Labels can move when Apple changes the Home app, so use the equivalent camera-notification controls if your software presents slightly different wording.
Turn on activity notifications on iPhone
- Open the Home app.
- On the Home tab, tap More.
- Tap Home Settings.
- Open Cameras & Doorbells.
- Select the camera you want to configure.
- Turn on Activity Notifications.
This enables the camera’s activity alerts. If you also want to know when the camera changes status or goes offline, open its Status and Notifications settings and enable the applicable status alerts separately. Motion alerts and equipment-status alerts are different controls; turning on one does not automatically turn on the other.
Choose what counts as activity
| Choice | Events that qualify | When it makes sense | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any motion | Movement of any detected kind | You want the broadest coverage and do not want to filter by category. | Incidental movement can create more clips and alerts. |
| Specific motion | People, animals, vehicles, or package delivery, according to the category you select | You care about particular event types and want to review less irrelevant footage. | Available only with the camera’s HomeKit Secure Video motion analysis. |
| Activity Zones | Motion inside (or, with an inverted zone, outside) a drawn area | You need to ignore a road, tree, sidewalk, or another part of the camera image. | Requires specific-motion recording and does not alter motion-detection automations. |
When to use any motion
Choose any motion when the fact that something moved is itself important. It is the safer starting point for a newly installed camera because you do not need to predict which categories matter. A side gate, equipment room, or area where an unexpected movement of any kind is significant may call for this setting.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Any-motion mode is intentionally broad. The Home app is not being asked to decide whether the movement was a person, animal, vehicle, or parcel; it is being asked to report movement. If the resulting stream of events is too noisy, change to specific motion or add an Activity Zone rather than repeatedly dismissing alerts.

When to use specific motion
Choose specific motion when you want Home to distinguish event categories. Apple lists people, animals, vehicles, and package delivery. You can select the category that matches the camera’s purpose instead of treating every movement as equally important.
Apple states that choosing a specific motion rather than any motion results in fewer clips, fewer clip notifications, and less video to review. Apple does not publish a percentage reduction, accuracy score, or false-alert rate for this choice, so treat it as a qualitative reduction in review volume rather than a guaranteed numerical improvement.
How package delivery detection behaves
A package must remain in the camera’s view after delivery to be detected as a package event. A parcel that is immediately hidden, removed, or outside the camera’s framing may not satisfy that condition. Check the camera’s physical view before relying on package notifications.
Use time, occupancy, and recording as additional conditions
HomeKit Secure Video cameras can combine motion selection with other conditions. The exact controls appear in the camera’s notification and recording settings.

Time of day
Use a time condition when the same movement has different importance during the day and night. For example, you may want a camera to notify for a selected motion category overnight but use a different schedule during working hours. Set the time window in the camera’s Home notification controls and verify the schedule against the Home’s time zone.
Whether someone is home
Home can change behavior according to whether members are considered home or away. The app uses the location of devices belonging to home members to switch between those states. This means a member’s device location can affect which recording or notification behavior is active; it is not simply a manual label on the camera.
Use the home/away condition when you want different behavior while the household is present and when everyone is away. Review who is included as a home member and which devices provide their location if the state does not change as expected.
When a clip is recorded
A notification can be tied to clip recording rather than to every detected movement. This is useful when you want an alert only for events that Home has decided to save as video. The recording decision and the notification decision are related but distinct: confirm both in the camera’s settings so you know what event produces a clip and what event produces a push alert.

Configure separate When Home and When Away recording behavior
HomeKit Secure Video camera settings can provide separate recording choices for When Home and When Away. This lets you select a more restrained behavior while people are present and a more comprehensive one when the home is empty, subject to the options supported by the camera.
If you need Activity Zones, Apple’s Mac guidance identifies Stream & Allow Recording in a When Home or When Away recording mode as the relevant recording choice. If zone controls do not appear, inspect both recording modes and make sure the mode you are editing permits the required specific-motion recording.
Draw an Activity Zone
Activity Zones restrict the image area that Home uses for the camera’s specific-motion activity notifications. They are useful when a camera sees a busy street, swaying foliage, a shared walkway, or another region that should not trigger the alerts you care about.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the selected camera’s settings in Home.
- Choose Select Activity Zones.
- Draw one or more areas directly on the camera view.
- Save the zone and return to the camera’s notification settings.
- If you need the opposite behavior, use Invert Zone so motion outside the drawn area is considered.
Activity Zones are available only when the camera is configured to record a specific motion. If the option is missing, first check that the camera supports HomeKit Secure Video and that its recording mode is set for specific-motion recording. Zones affect the camera’s activity filtering; they do not change motion-detection automations.

Optional familiar-person notifications
With a HomeKit Secure Video camera or doorbell, Home can optionally recognize a person tagged in Photos and notify you when that person is in view. This is separate from choosing people as a motion category: the category identifies a person-shaped event, while familiar-person recognition can associate the event with a person in your photo library.
Photo-library access affects whether names appear in notifications. If a person is not tagged, the relevant library is unavailable, or access differs between household members, Home may not show a familiar name even when it reports a person event.
Understand the home-hub analysis limit
Apple notes that when a home has more cameras than its available home hubs can analyze, some clips may still be recorded without specific-motion analysis. Home marks those clips as unanalyzed. An unanalyzed clip may therefore lack the people, animals, vehicles, or package classification needed for category-based filtering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If specific-motion results are inconsistent across several cameras, inspect whether the affected clips are labeled unanalyzed and consider the number of cameras versus the home hubs able to process them. Do not interpret an unanalyzed clip as proof that the camera failed to detect movement; it indicates that the additional motion analysis was not applied to that clip.
Choose a setup for common situations
| Situation | Recommended configuration | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Monitoring a side entrance where any unexpected movement matters | Activity Notifications on; any motion | The goal is broad movement coverage rather than classification. |
| Watching a driveway for people or vehicles | Specific motion with the relevant categories; add a zone that excludes unnecessary parts of the image | Category filtering and a zone focus alerts on the driveway activity you care about. |
| Watching a porch for deliveries | Specific motion with package delivery; make sure the drop-off area stays visible after delivery | Package detection depends on the package remaining in view. |
| Reducing alerts while household members are home | Use separate When Home and When Away recording settings and occupancy conditions | Home can switch behavior based on member-device locations. |
| Identifying a known visitor | People-specific motion plus optional familiar-person recognition | The first setting detects a person event; the optional feature can identify a tagged person. |
Troubleshoot missing or unwanted notifications
The camera sends no motion alerts
- Return to Home > More > Home Settings > Cameras & Doorbells, select the camera, and verify that Activity Notifications is on.
- Check whether a time or home/away condition excludes the period in which you are testing.
- Confirm that the camera is still present in the Home app and that its recording mode matches the type of activity you expect.
- If you enabled a zone, test movement inside the drawn area. An inverted zone intentionally reverses which part of the image counts.
The camera reports too many irrelevant events
- Switch from any motion to a specific category if you only care about people, animals, vehicles, or package delivery.
- Draw an Activity Zone around the useful part of the image, or invert the zone to exclude a defined region.
- Check whether the camera is set to record specific motion; zones are not available for any-motion recording.
Activity Zones are unavailable
- Verify that the camera model supports HomeKit Secure Video, not merely basic Apple Home compatibility.
- Open the applicable When Home or When Away recording mode and choose Stream & Allow Recording where that option is offered.
- Configure recording for a specific motion, then return to Select Activity Zones.
People or package categories do not appear on a clip
- Check whether the clip is marked unanalyzed. Apple says this can happen when there are more cameras than home hubs able to analyze video.
- Confirm that the camera is set to specific-motion recording rather than any-motion recording.
- For package events, make sure the delivered package remains visible in the camera’s view.
You receive status alerts but not activity alerts
Status and offline notifications are configured separately from Activity Notifications. Reopen the camera’s settings and enable the activity control in addition to any status controls you already enabled.
Quick Recap
Limits you should know before relying on a trigger
- Apple documents the available motion categories and filtering controls, but does not provide measured accuracy, false-alert percentages, or a guaranteed notification reduction.
- Specific-motion filtering, Activity Zones, and familiar-person recognition are HomeKit Secure Video features; basic Apple Home camera compatibility alone does not establish that all of them are available.
- Activity Zones filter camera activity notifications and do not modify motion-detection automations.
- Home/away behavior depends on the locations of devices belonging to home members, so an unexpected occupancy state can change which recording or notification mode is active.
- Software labels can change in later Home app releases. If the path differs, look under the selected camera’s notification, recording, and status settings.
Final setup checklist
- The camera is added to the intended Home and its model’s Apple Home compatibility has been checked.
- Activity Notifications is enabled for the selected camera.
- The trigger is deliberately set to any motion or a specific category.
- Time and home/away conditions match when you actually want alerts.
- When Home and When Away recording modes are configured as intended.
- Activity Zones are drawn only after specific-motion recording is enabled.
- Status and offline alerts are enabled separately if you need them.
- You understand that some clips can be marked unanalyzed when available home-hub analysis capacity is exceeded.
