Give it a name and room so it is easy to find and control. A home hub is optional for basic setups, but it enables control away from home, shared access and automations; Matter and Thread have additional, software- and model-specific requirements.
Before you begin: check compatibility and requirements
Apple Home works with accessories labeled compatible with Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter. Compatibility alone may not be enough: a product can also require a particular Wi-Fi band, a firmware update, extra hardware or initial setup in its maker’s app. Check the accessory’s manual and requirements before you start. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends confirming compatibility and checking for these additional setup steps.

- Use an iPhone or iPad to add accessories. Apple says accessories cannot be added from a Mac. Keep the device and accessory nearby, and make sure the accessory is powered on.
- Check whether the accessory uses Wi-Fi or Thread. Some Wi-Fi accessories require a 2.4 GHz network and may not work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi alone.
- Decide whether you need a home hub. It is useful for away-from-home control, sharing Home access and automations, and is required for some protocol and feature combinations.
Create a home in the Home app
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Home.
- If this is your first setup, follow the prompts to create a home and define rooms. If a home already exists, open it and continue.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on and the device is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use for the home.
Apple’s introduction to Home on iPhone covers the app’s homes, rooms, scenes and automations. You can add more rooms and organize them into zones after the initial setup.

- Power on the accessory and place it near your iPhone or iPad. Complete any manufacturer-app setup the manual requires.
- In Home, tap Add Accessory (or the add button, then Add Accessory, if shown).
- Scan the setup code on the accessory or its packaging. If the camera cannot read it, choose the option to enter the code manually. Apple Home codes are printed on the accessory or in its documentation; Matter codes can be 11 or 21 digits.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. If the accessory was already paired in another app, select More Options when offered and use the pairing code generated by the manufacturer’s app.
- Choose a room, give the accessory a clear name, and finish setup. The name is also what you can use when asking Siri to control it.
Apple’s step-by-step guide is Set up accessories with Home on iPhone. Depending on the accessory, Home may offer suggested automations during setup. Add other accessories the same way, then assign each to the room where it is used.

Do you need a home hub?
Not for every basic setup. Apple lists three main reasons to set up a hub: control accessories while away from home, share control with other people, and run automations. A HomePod or HomePod mini becomes a hub during setup. An Apple TV can serve as one after you assign it to a room. See Apple’s home hub setup instructions for the supported setup details.
Matter: account for the iOS version
Apple’s hub setup article says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories. However, its accessory troubleshooting page documents an exception: an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a hub. Apple still recommends a hub for the best experience. If you want remote access, sharing or automations, set up a hub rather than relying on the no-hub exception.

Thread: check the exact hub model
Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled hub or a compatible third-party Thread border router. Apple names HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) with Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-capable options in its setup guidance. Confirm the precise model and configuration before buying: not every Apple TV 4K configuration has the cited Thread support.
Organize rooms, scenes and automations
After pairing, check that every accessory is in the right room and has a name you will recognize. Rooms keep controls manageable; zones can group rooms, for example by floor. A scene can coordinate several accessories with one action, while an automation can trigger actions based on time, location or another accessory’s behavior. HomePod supports automations based on time, location or accessory activity. Create these only after the individual accessories work as expected.
