Apple Cash is a U.S.-only service for sending and receiving money through Messages or Wallet. To use it as an adult, you must live in the United States, be at least 18, use a compatible Apple device with current software, enable two-factor authentication, and sign in with the same Apple Account on each device used for payments. Set it up in Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, then check the recipient and amount before you authenticate any payment.
Check eligibility before setting up Apple Cash
Apple’s regular individual-use requirements are:
- You live in the United States and are 18 or older.
- You have a compatible iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro with the latest supported iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, or visionOS.
- Two-factor authentication is turned on for your Apple Account.
- You’re signed in to the same Apple Account on each device you use to send or receive money.
For someone under 18, a family organizer can set up Apple Cash Family instead of an individual account. Some features for minors may depend on access to a supported payment card. See Apple’s Apple Cash setup requirements for current compatibility and eligibility details.

How do I set up Apple Cash?
- On your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro, open Settings.
- Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Turn on Apple Cash.
- Under Payment Cards, tap Apple Cash.
- Tap Continue and follow the onscreen steps.
Apple may ask you to verify your identity to protect the account and enable all Apple Cash features. Apple says Green Dot Bank requires verification for fraud-protection and regulatory reasons, and may ask again even if you verified previously. Apple says the account is FDIC-insured after identity verification; that statement should not be taken as a blanket guarantee that every balance or use has identical protection. How do I send money with Apple Cash?
Send from Messages
- Open an existing conversation or start one with the person you intend to pay.
- Tap the Apple Cash control, enter the amount, and review the payment.
- Confirm the recipient and amount, then tap Send.
- Authenticate with the side button and Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode when prompted.
Send from Wallet
- Open Wallet and tap your Apple Cash card.
- Tap Send or Request, choose a person or add a recipient, and enter the amount.
- Review the payment details and confirm. Authenticate if prompted.
Apple Watch also supports sending through Messages. Apple’s instructions and current payment flows are in Send and receive money with Apple Cash.

Check before confirming
Apple Support cautions: “Apple Cash person-to-person payments are like any other private transaction between two people, so only send and receive money with people you know.” Before authenticating, independently verify the person and reason for payment, especially if a request is unexpected or creates pressure to act quickly. Check the name and amount in the payment sheet. A private person-to-person payment is not a purchase with buyer protection, and you should not expect a completed payment to be reversed.
Apple says sending, receiving, or requesting money has no fee. That does not mean every way of moving money out of Apple Cash is free; transfer fees are covered below.

How do I receive money with Apple Cash?
Received money is kept in your Apple Cash balance. You can choose how incoming payments are handled in Wallet > Apple Cash > More > Card Details.

| Automatic acceptance | Incoming payments are accepted automatically, so you don’t need to approve each one. |
| Manual acceptance | You review and accept each payment. Apple gives you seven days to accept; open the payment in Messages and tap Accept. |
If a payment is still pending because it hasn’t been accepted, the sender can cancel it. The recipient can reject an unaccepted payment from its transaction in Wallet. If you haven’t set up Apple Cash, tapping Accept starts setup; the seven-day acceptance window still applies. See Apple’s payment acceptance instructions.

Understand limits, transfer times, and fees
Apple’s published operating figures below are service limits and timings, not independent measurements. Limits and fees can change, so check Apple’s current Apple Cash limits and fees before making a large payment or transfer.

Choose a standard bank transfer when avoiding a transfer fee matters more than speed. Choose Instant Transfer when the debit card is eligible and faster access is worth the fee. The Instant Transfer charge is for moving funds to a debit card, not for sending, receiving, or requesting money from another person.

Know who provides Apple Cash and what Apple says about privacy
Apple Cash services are provided by Green Dot Bank, Member FDIC. Apple Payments Services LLC, an Apple subsidiary, is a service provider to Green Dot Bank for Apple Cash accounts. Apple says neither Apple Inc. nor Apple Payments Services LLC is a bank. Apple’s service and verification disclosure explains these roles.

What to do if Apple Cash is restricted or locked
If Apple Cash is under review, sending, receiving, or adding money may be restricted. If the account is locked, you may also be unable to transfer funds or pay with Apple Pay. Apple says a review can take up to two business days. It lists repeated identity-verification failures, multiple accounts associated with a Social Security number, and suspected fraud among possible reasons for restrictions.
Follow the instructions shown on your Apple Cash card. If no next steps appear, contact an Apple Cash Specialist at Green Dot Bank. Apple’s restricted and locked account guidance explains the available support route.
