Check compatibility before you connect
CarPlay is not available in every country or on every vehicle. It works only when the feature is supported by the exact car or by a compatible aftermarket navigation system. A cable, adapter or app cannot add CarPlay to a vehicle that does not support it.
Use this pre-setup checklist
- Confirm regional availability. CarPlay availability depends on country or region.
- Verify the exact vehicle. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and the owner’s manual. “The same model” can have different support by model year, trim or factory stereo.
- Update software. Apple recommends current iOS and current vehicle or stereo software. If the manufacturer provides a firmware update, install it according to the vehicle’s instructions.
- Turn on Siri. CarPlay setup and voice controls require Siri to be enabled on the iPhone.
- Prepare the right connection. For wired use, identify the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port and use a cable that matches both the iPhone connector and the car’s port. Apple’s setup guide recommends an Apple USB cable, but you do not need to buy one if you already have a suitable cable.
- Park before pairing. Complete setup while the car is stationary so you can operate the phone and vehicle display safely.
If support is unclear, the vehicle maker and owner’s manual are the authoritative sources for that car. Apple describes support as limited to select automobiles and select aftermarket navigation systems.

Set up wired CarPlay
Wired CarPlay uses the vehicle’s USB connection. The first connection normally starts CarPlay automatically, but some cars require you to select the CarPlay icon on the stereo.
- Start the car and leave the stereo powered on.
- Make sure Siri is enabled on the iPhone.
- Find the correct USB port. Look for a port marked with a CarPlay or smartphone icon, or use the port identified in the owner’s manual. A vehicle can have USB ports that provide charging but do not carry CarPlay data.
- Connect the iPhone. Plug it into the CarPlay-capable port with a suitable USB cable. Match the cable to the iPhone’s connector and to the vehicle’s USB socket.
- Approve any prompts on the iPhone or vehicle screen. If the CarPlay interface does not open, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
- Complete the optional wireless handoff. On a vehicle that supports both wired and wireless CarPlay, the initial wired connection may offer to pair the car wirelessly for later drives. Follow the prompt if you want to use that mode.
Do not assume that a different cable, USB adapter or dongle can make an unsupported stereo compatible. Those accessories only help when the car already provides the necessary CarPlay support.
If the first wired connection does not appear
Try the vehicle’s other USB port only if the manual identifies it as CarPlay-capable, then reconnect the iPhone. Check that the iPhone is unlocked when you begin and look for the CarPlay logo on the stereo. If another suitable cable is available, test it; a damaged or charge-only cable can prevent the data connection CarPlay needs.
Set up wireless CarPlay
Wireless pairing is controlled partly by the vehicle, so the exact prompts differ by model. The sequence below applies to a vehicle that supports wireless CarPlay without requiring a cable for the initial connection.
- Start the car and put the stereo in its wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button. This begins the vehicle’s CarPlay pairing flow on supported systems.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the iPhone. Wireless CarPlay uses the vehicle’s CarPlay Wi-Fi connection in addition to the vehicle’s pairing process.
- Join the CarPlay network. Tap the network associated with the vehicle and verify that Auto-Join is enabled for it.
- Open the CarPlay list on the iPhone. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay and select the vehicle when it appears.
- Follow the vehicle-specific prompts. The owner’s manual may require a confirmation on the stereo, a steering-wheel button press or an additional Bluetooth approval.
If the vehicle supports both wired and wireless modes, plugging in by USB first can present a wireless-pairing option for future drives. Whether that option appears, and how the car reconnects afterward, is determined by the vehicle’s own software.
What happens on later wireless drives
After the first successful pairing, leave Wi-Fi enabled and keep Auto-Join turned on for the vehicle’s CarPlay network. Start the car with the iPhone nearby and allow the saved vehicle relationship to reconnect. If the vehicle does not reconnect, open the CarPlay list on the iPhone and select the saved car again, then consult the vehicle manual for its wireless mode.

Wired and wireless CarPlay: what actually differs
When a car offers both modes, the practical distinction is how the iPhone starts each drive. Apple’s setup guidance does not establish universal differences in latency, reliability, charging speed or battery use, so those characteristics should not be treated as the same for every vehicle.
| Connection mode | Initial setup | What you do on later drives | Important dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired | Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s CarPlay USB port. | Connect the cable again; select the CarPlay logo if the interface does not open automatically. | The port must support CarPlay data, not only charging. |
| Wireless-only vehicle | Use the steering-wheel voice-command button, wireless/Bluetooth pairing mode, iPhone Wi-Fi and the CarPlay network. | Allow the vehicle and iPhone to reconnect through their saved pairing. | The car’s pairing flow and owner’s manual determine the exact prompts. |
| Vehicle supporting both | A first wired connection may offer wireless pairing. | Use the mode you completed pairing for, subject to the vehicle’s behavior. | Wireless handoff is offered only when that vehicle supports it. |
| Latency, reliability, charging and battery comparisons | Not established as universal results by Apple’s setup guidance; do not assume one mode is always better. | ||
Customize the CarPlay home screen
App layout is changed on the iPhone, not from the CarPlay display. Only apps that support CarPlay can be added to this list.
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap General, then CarPlay.
- Select the car you want to edit. If more than one vehicle is saved, choose the correct one.
- Tap Customise. Depending on the iPhone’s language or software version, the spelling or surrounding labels may differ slightly.
- Use Add to place a supported app on the CarPlay Home view, or use Delete to remove one from the view.
- Touch and drag the app icons into your preferred order.
- Connect to the car again. Apple says the changed arrangement appears on the next connection.
What you can and cannot arrange
- Supported apps only: An iPhone app will not appear in the CarPlay editor unless its developer supports CarPlay.
- Order is per vehicle: The CarPlay settings page is tied to the selected car. Edit the other saved vehicle separately if you use more than one.
- More than one page is normal: When there are more apps than fit on one screen, the CarPlay Home view spans additional pages. Moving an icon earlier in the order places it on an earlier page when space permits.
- Removing is not deleting: Delete in the CarPlay editor removes the icon from CarPlay; it does not uninstall the iPhone app.
- Changes are not instant on the current session: If the display still shows the old order, disconnect and reconnect the iPhone before changing the layout again.
Change the CarPlay wallpaper
Wallpaper is a separate setting from app arrangement and is changed on the vehicle’s CarPlay display.
- Open Settings on the CarPlay display.
- Select Wallpaper.
- Choose one of the available options.
- Select Set to apply it.
This process changes the CarPlay background offered by the vehicle interface. It does not change the iPhone’s lock-screen or Home Screen wallpaper. Wallpaper choices are the options presented by CarPlay; the iPhone app editor does not provide a custom-photo upload step in this setup flow.
Know what is saved for each car
CarPlay keeps a vehicle entry in the iPhone’s Settings > General > CarPlay list. Selecting a different saved car changes which app arrangement you are editing. If you regularly drive two vehicles, customize each entry separately rather than assuming one order applies to both.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteForget This Car applies to the selected vehicle. It removes that saved CarPlay relationship, but it does not uninstall apps, erase the iPhone’s general settings or remove another vehicle from the list. You must pair the forgotten car again before CarPlay can connect to it.

Accessory and upgrade decisions
For wired setup, first use a cable you already own that fits both connectors and carries data. Apple recommends an Apple USB cable, but buying another cable is unnecessary when your existing one works. A charge-only or damaged cable can fail even when the vehicle and iPhone are compatible. Match the iPhone connector and the vehicle socket before purchasing anything.
There is no cable, adapter or dongle that universally adds CarPlay to an unsupported factory stereo. If the vehicle lacks built-in CarPlay, an aftermarket navigation receiver may be an option because Apple identifies selected aftermarket systems as compatible. Receiver fit, wiring, steering-wheel controls, installation requirements, model-year support and regional availability vary, so confirm the exact vehicle and receiver with the manufacturer or an installer before paying for an upgrade.
A complete first-drive checklist
- Verify regional and vehicle compatibility.
- Install current iOS and any manufacturer-approved stereo firmware.
- Turn on Siri.
- Park safely and start the vehicle.
- Choose wired USB or the vehicle’s wireless/Bluetooth mode.
- For wired use, connect to the marked CarPlay data port; for wireless use, enable Wi-Fi, start the steering-wheel pairing flow and allow Auto-Join.
- Approve prompts and select the CarPlay logo if the interface does not launch.
- After the first connection, customize apps on the iPhone and reconnect to verify the new order.
- Set the wallpaper from CarPlay’s own Settings menu.
Troubleshoot a CarPlay connection
Work through the checks that match the way you are connecting. Change one variable at a time so you can identify whether the problem is the cable, port, wireless pairing, iPhone setting or vehicle software.
Recommended Free Tools
CarPlay does not open after plugging in
- Confirm that you used the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port, not a charging-only port.
- Reconnect the cable firmly and test another suitable cable if one is available.
- Check that Siri is enabled.
- Look for and select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
- Restart the iPhone and the car, then try the connection again.
The wireless vehicle is not listed
- Put the stereo into its wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button to restart the vehicle’s pairing flow.
- Verify that both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on.
- Tap the vehicle’s CarPlay network and make sure Auto-Join is enabled.
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay and select the car from the available vehicles.
- Follow the owner’s manual if the car requires a model-specific confirmation or sequence.
CarPlay worked before but stopped connecting
- Restart both the iPhone and the vehicle.
- Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and make sure CarPlay is allowed.
- For wireless use, recheck Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Auto-Join for the CarPlay network.
- For wired use, test the correct USB port and another suitable cable.
- Check whether the vehicle stereo has a firmware update from its manufacturer.
Forget and pair the car again
Use this step when the saved pairing appears corrupted or the car is listed but will not connect.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay.
- Select the vehicle.
- Tap Forget This Car.
- Restart the iPhone and the vehicle.
- Run the wired or wireless setup from the relevant section above.
Forgetting the car removes its saved CarPlay relationship, so you will need to complete pairing again. If the problem continues after a fresh pairing, the vehicle’s firmware, stereo configuration or compatibility is the next place to investigate with the manufacturer.
If the vehicle has no built-in CarPlay
Apple notes that selected aftermarket navigation systems support CarPlay. This is an optional upgrade path rather than a universal fix: receiver fit, wiring, steering-wheel controls, installation method and compatibility depend on the vehicle. Check the receiver maker and an installer for the exact car before buying or removing the factory stereo. Do not treat an aftermarket unit as guaranteed to work in every trim or region.

Keep the setup reliable
- Use the same known-good USB port and cable for wired connections.
- Leave Wi-Fi enabled when you depend on wireless CarPlay, and keep Auto-Join enabled for the vehicle’s CarPlay network.
- Install current iOS and vehicle-stereo firmware when updates are available and supported by the manufacturer.
- When you change the app order, reconnect the iPhone before deciding that the change failed; Apple applies the arrangement on the next connection.
- If a menu name differs from the steps here, compare the iPhone’s iOS version and the vehicle’s manual before changing unrelated settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy an Apple cable for wired CarPlay?
No. Apple recommends an Apple USB cable, but a suitable existing cable that matches the iPhone connector and vehicle port can work. Replace it only if it is damaged, charge-only or otherwise unable to carry data.
Can a USB adapter or dongle add CarPlay to any car?
No. Accessories cannot make an unsupported factory stereo compatible. The vehicle must already support CarPlay, or you must install a compatible aftermarket navigation system.
Why does my car have several USB ports but CarPlay works in only one?
Vehicles can include charging-only ports alongside a CarPlay-capable data port. Use the socket marked with a CarPlay or smartphone icon, or follow the owner’s manual.
Where do I rearrange CarPlay apps?
On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay, select the saved vehicle, tap Customise, then add, delete or drag supported apps. The new order appears the next time the iPhone connects.
Why can’t I find an iPhone app in the CarPlay editor?
Only apps whose developers support CarPlay appear in the editor. An ordinary iPhone app cannot be added manually.

How do I change the CarPlay background?
Use the vehicle display, not the iPhone: open Settings in CarPlay, choose Wallpaper, select an option and tap Set. This does not change the iPhone’s wallpaper.
What should I check when wireless CarPlay is missing from the iPhone’s list?
Put the stereo in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode, press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, enable Auto-Join for the CarPlay network, then open Settings > General > CarPlay and select the vehicle.
What does Forget This Car do?
It removes the selected vehicle’s saved CarPlay relationship. Restart the iPhone and car, then complete wired or wireless pairing again. It does not uninstall apps or affect other saved vehicles.
Who should I contact if CarPlay still fails after re-pairing?
Check the vehicle’s stereo firmware and compatibility information with the manufacturer. The owner’s manual and vehicle maker can identify model-specific pairing steps or configuration limits.
The Bottom Line
Verify that the exact vehicle supports CarPlay, enable Siri, then connect through the marked USB port or the car’s wireless pairing flow. Arrange supported apps at Settings > General > CarPlay > [car] > Customise, and change the background from Settings > Wallpaper on the CarPlay display. If connection fails, check the port or wireless settings, restrictions, software updates and saved pairing before contacting the vehicle maker.
