Use layered protection rather than one plugin: run a Bukkit-compatible server such as Paper, give players GriefPrevention claims, protect spawn and staff-defined areas with WorldGuard plus the Bukkit build of WorldEdit, and install CoreProtect for searchable history and precise rollback. Verify backups before changing plugins, match every build to your Minecraft, server and Java versions, and test protections in a disposable area before players return.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What each layer does
Anti-griefing has two different jobs: stopping unauthorized actions and recovering when something slips through. A claim or region plugin handles prevention; an audit plugin explains what happened and can reverse selected events; backups provide recovery when a plugin fails, data is corrupted or a rollback is too broad.

Do not stack overlapping protection rules casually. Decide whether a location is player-claim territory, an administrator region, or both, then test which plugin wins when a player has trust in one system but not the other.
Prerequisites and compatibility checks
Before downloading anything, record the exact versions that make up your server. Keep this record with your backup and change log.

- Minecraft version and build.
- Server implementation and build, such as Paper, Purpur, Spigot or another Bukkit-API implementation.
- Java runtime version.
- Every installed plugin and its configuration.
- Whether CoreProtect stores data in its local database or an external database, plus the database credentials and host details.
A vanilla Minecraft server cannot load WorldGuard plugins. WorldGuard requires a server that supports the Bukkit API, including Paper and Spigot, and the Bukkit version of WorldEdit. GriefPrevention supports Purpur, Spigot, Paper, CraftBukkit and other Bukkit-API implementations. CoreProtect must match the exact Minecraft, server and Java versions; a file that works on one build is not automatically safe on another.
Plan a staging copy or disposable test world. If that is impossible, reserve a remote area and use temporary test accounts. Never test destructive flags or rollback commands on the only copy of a live world.
Install the protection stack safely
- Stop the server. Use the host control panel’s stop action or the console’s normal stop command. Do not replace plugin files while the server is writing them.
- Create and verify a backup. Copy every world, the complete
pluginsdirectory, server configuration and CoreProtect data. If CoreProtect uses an external database, export that database as well. Open the archive or restore it to a separate test directory so you know it is usable. - Install a supported server implementation. If the server is still vanilla, migrate to Paper or another supported Bukkit implementation according to that implementation’s installation procedure. Keep the original world copy untouched until the new server starts and loads it correctly.
- Install GriefPrevention or WorldGuard and WorldEdit. Download the JAR files from their official project documentation, place them in the server’s
pluginsfolder, and keep the exact files in your change record. For WorldGuard, install both WorldGuard and the Bukkit build of WorldEdit. - Start once and read the entire log. Look for disabled plugins, API errors, Java errors, failed database connections and configuration migration messages. Resolve compatibility problems before inviting players.
- Install CoreProtect. Stop the server again, place the version-matched JAR in
plugins, start it, and inspect the startup log for successful initialization and database errors. - Configure permissions. Use a permissions manager and grant only the commands and region actions each role needs. Do this before testing with staff accounts.
- Perform harmless tests. Place and break a test block, open a test container, run a lookup, and confirm that the event appears in CoreProtect. Verify prevention and logging separately.
Paper’s administration guidance emphasizes keeping backups. Retain the last known-good plugin JAR and configuration whenever you upgrade, so a failed update can be reversed without guessing which file changed.
Set up GriefPrevention for player claims
GriefPrevention is designed for player-owned survival land. Its official setup procedure is straightforward: download GriefPrevention.jar, place it in plugins, and restart. On a conventional single-mode world, the defaults are generally suitable. Worlds that mix creative and survival, or PvP and non-PvP rules, need deliberate configuration instead of blindly accepting defaults.
Establish the claim workflow
- Join with a normal player account, not an administrator account.
- Use the plugin’s claim tool to mark two opposite corners of a small test area.
- Log out and test with a second account. Try placing and breaking blocks, opening containers, using doors and interacting with animals or redstone.
- Return as the owner and add a trusted player only after confirming the untrusted account is blocked.
- Test the abandonment or resizing process in the test area, then document the commands and limits your community will use.
Keep player claims and staff regions conceptually separate. If a spawn area is already protected by WorldGuard, do not encourage players to create claims over it. Overlapping trust lists can produce confusing results, especially when an administrator has bypass permission and ordinary players do not.

Account for special worlds
Review claim behavior separately in each world. A creative building world may need different trust and block-use rules from a survival world. A PvP arena may intentionally allow combat while preventing block damage. Test those combinations with accounts that have no bypass permission; an administrator’s successful test can hide a real player’s denial or accidental access.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Protect spawn and public areas with WorldGuard
WorldGuard is suited to regions defined by staff: spawn, a market, a transport hub, a protected monument or a public event area. It works with the Bukkit version of WorldEdit, which provides the selection tools.
Create a basic region
- Grant a trusted builder the minimum WorldEdit selection permission, or perform the selection from an administrator account.
- Use WorldEdit’s selection tool (commonly obtained with
//wand) and select opposite corners of the area. - Create the region with a command such as
/rg define spawn. Replacespawnwith your naming convention. - Assign owners and members deliberately. Owners can generally manage more of the region than members, so do not use an owner assignment for ordinary residents.
- Set protection flags appropriate to the location. Common examples include denying block break and placement, container access, PvP, fire spread, TNT and other explosions. Confirm the exact flag names and defaults with the WorldGuard version installed on your server.
- Test from an untrusted account, a member account and a staff account with bypass permission. Record which actions each role can perform.
WorldGuard’s region permissions cover actions such as defining regions, bypassing protection and overriding chest protection. Separate those permissions by role. A moderator who only needs to inspect a region should not automatically receive region ownership or bypass rights.
Check environmental and plugin-created threats
Protection is not limited to a player’s hand. WorldGuard configuration exposes controls for effects such as Endermen picking up blocks and plugin-spawned mobs. Tree growth from outside a protected region is also addressed by its documented region behavior. Test fire, fluids, pistons, explosions, dispensers and entity interactions around your actual build; a flag that looks correct on paper may interact with another plugin differently.
Some client-side GUI interactions are outside WorldGuard’s awareness. If a shop, menu, quest or backpack plugin creates a custom inventory, test that interface inside and outside the region. A protected chest does not prove that a custom plugin menu is protected.

Install and validate CoreProtect for audit and rollback
CoreProtect records block and container activity so staff can answer who changed an area, what changed and when. It supports inspection, filtered lookups, targeted rollback and restore. Its maintainers explicitly state that it is not a replacement for server backups, permissions management or moderation policy.
Initial validation
- Confirm the JAR matches your exact Minecraft, server and Java versions.
- Before installation, back up worlds, plugin data and any external CoreProtect database. Stop the server while copying files.
- Start the server and read the complete log. Fix database, dependency or migration errors before relying on recorded history.
- With a test account, place and remove a harmless block and open a disposable container.
- Use CoreProtect’s inspection tool (commonly
/co inspector/co i) and a small lookup to confirm those events are present. - Document the lookup and rollback procedure, then remove test data if appropriate.
Useful investigation patterns
CoreProtect command syntax can vary by release, so use /co help on the installed version. Typical patterns are:
/co inspecttoggles inspection; click a block to view recent actions./co lookup u:Player t:1h r:10searches a named player’s events during the last hour within a radius of 10 blocks./co rollback u:Player t:1h r:20reverses matching changes in a radius of 20 blocks. Add filters for world, action or block type only after testing the query./co restore ...reapplies changes from a prior rollback when the command and filters are correct for your version.
Run a lookup before every rollback. Save the query, affected world and radius in the incident record. A narrow radius and short time window are safer than a world-wide command, particularly when legitimate construction happened near the grief.
Separate staff powers
Create distinct roles for inspection, lookup, rollback, restore, purge and migration. Most helpers need read-only inspection. A senior moderator may need a targeted rollback but not data purging. Restrict restore and migration to trusted administrators, and require a second person or a written incident record for destructive actions.
Use least-privilege permissions
Protection plugins are only as strong as the accounts that can bypass them. Build roles around tasks rather than titles.

| Role | Typical access | Keep out of the role |
|---|---|---|
| Player | Create and manage their own GriefPrevention claim; ordinary gameplay | WorldGuard bypass, region definition, CoreProtect rollback |
| Builder | Temporary building access in a named staff region | Global bypass and claim administration |
| Moderator | CoreProtect inspection and filtered lookup; limited region checks | Purge, migration and unrestricted restore |
| Administrator | Region management, carefully scoped bypass, rollback and restore | Shared credentials; permanent access for accounts that do not need it |
Test every role while logged in as that role. Console access and plugin permissions can bypass a player-facing denial, so include both in your review. Remove temporary permissions after an event or build project ends.

Roll back only the damaged area
Yes. CoreProtect’s filtered lookup and rollback are designed for targeted recovery, provided the relevant events were recorded and your filters are accurate. The safest sequence is:
- Stop new activity in the affected area. Temporarily close it or ask players to leave.
- Inspect several damaged blocks to identify the responsible account, time range and action types.
- Run a lookup with a narrow world, radius and time filter. Review legitimate edits included in the result.
- Make a fresh backup before changing the world.
- Run a rollback using the same filters and a conservative radius. Do not begin with a whole-world command.
- Inspect the area again and test nearby containers, redstone and entities.
- If the result is wrong, use the matching restore procedure for your CoreProtect version, then reassess with a tighter query.
- Record the commands, operator, time, backup name and final result.
Rollback cannot recreate information that was never logged, and it may not reverse every side effect of another plugin. A custom machine, generated structure or external database record may require that plugin’s own recovery method. When damage is widespread or the event history is unreliable, restore a verified full backup to a separate copy first and compare it with the live world.

Backups and restore drills
Schedule backups for worlds, plugin configurations and CoreProtect data. Define how many copies to retain and where they are stored, including protection from the same server’s failure. Verify that archives open and that a complete restore can start a server; merely seeing a successful copy message is not enough.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the previous plugin JAR and configuration beside each upgrade backup. Test upgrades on a staging copy when possible. Rehearse both a narrow CoreProtect rollback and a full world restore so staff know which path to use under pressure.
Troubleshooting common failures
WorldGuard does not load
Confirm that the server is Bukkit-compatible, that the Bukkit WorldEdit build is installed, and that both JARs match the Minecraft and Java versions. Read the startup log for dependency and API errors. A vanilla server cannot load WorldGuard.
Players can still grief inside a region
Reproduce the action with an untrusted account. Check whether the account has WorldGuard bypass, operator status or a permission inherited from another group. Verify the region boundaries and flags, then test interactions created by other plugins separately.
GriefPrevention claims behave differently between worlds
Review whether the worlds mix creative and survival or PvP and non-PvP rules. The defaults are intended for straightforward layouts; complex combinations need explicit configuration and independent tests.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
CoreProtect shows no event
Check the startup log, database connection and plugin status. Confirm you are querying the correct world, time range and radius. Repeat a harmless test action, then inspect it. Do not assume an empty result means no one changed the block.
A rollback affects legitimate work
Stop and document the command. Restore from the matching CoreProtect operation if supported, or recover the affected area from a verified backup. Narrow the player, action, time and radius filters before trying again, and require review for future destructive commands.
Choosing the right combination
| Server situation | Protection choice | Recovery requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Small survival server where players own their bases | GriefPrevention claims, with defaults reviewed for the world’s rules | CoreProtect plus verified scheduled backups |
| Public spawn, market or event map | WorldGuard and Bukkit WorldEdit regions managed by staff | CoreProtect queries restricted to moderators and administrators |
| Mixed creative/survival or PvP/non-PvP network | Per-world GriefPrevention settings and explicit WorldGuard region policy | Staging tests for every world and a documented restore plan |
| Server with frequent custom menus or machines | Protection layers plus plugin-specific testing for non-block interfaces | Backups that include external plugin data, not only world folders |
The practical standard is not “which single plugin stops grief?” It is whether an untrusted player is denied the tested actions, whether staff can identify the change, and whether you can recover a small area or the whole server without guesswork.
