To silence one kind of alert without losing an app’s useful messages, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, choose the app, open its notification category, and select Silent or turn that category off. Android may label channels as notification categories, and menu names vary by phone and Android version.
If every alert from the app is unwanted, use the app-level notification switch instead. If you need a scheduled quiet period across several apps, use Do Not Disturb or a Mode rather than changing individual categories.

What Android notification channels and categories do
Android groups an app’s notifications by type. Developer documentation calls these groups notification channels; the consumer settings screen may call them notification categories. An app might separate direct messages, reminders, downloads, marketing notices, or status updates into different groups.
Starting with Android 8.0 (API level 26), notifications must be assigned to a channel. Each channel has its own system settings, so you can leave important alerts active while making a noisy type silent or disabling it. The app creates the channel, but you decide how intrusive it is after it exists.

Channel controls are different from an app’s internal preferences. Android Developers states that once a channel is created, the app cannot programmatically change its visual or auditory behavior. The phone owner changes those behaviors in system settings. An app can still provide its own controls for which events it sends, so both places may be worth checking.
Use the main Settings route
The exact wording depends on the phone maker and Android release. The current general route is Settings > Notifications > App notifications. Older releases may show Apps & notifications > Notifications.
- Open Settings. Use the system Settings app, not the settings page inside the noisy app.
- Open Notifications. Look for App notifications. If that label is absent, open Apps & notifications and then Notifications, or search Settings for notifications.
- Find the app. The list may be sorted under Most recent. Choose All apps when the app is not listed there.
- Select the app. You will normally see an app-wide notification switch. Leave it enabled if some alerts are useful.
- Open the noisy category. If the screen lists notification categories, tap the one that produces the unwanted sound, vibration, or pop-up.
- Choose the behavior. Select Silent to keep the notification available without sound or vibration, or turn the category off to stop that type of notification entirely.
- Return to the app list and test. Trigger or wait for the relevant event. Confirm that useful categories still work and that the unwanted category behaves as intended.
Some phones place category switches directly on the app page; others require tapping a category name first. The labels can also change after a system update, so use the Settings search field when the documented path does not match your screen.

Reach a category directly from a notification
When the noisy alert appears, you can often avoid searching through Settings:
- Swipe down to open the notification shade.
- Touch and hold the notification.
- Tap its settings control, which may appear as a gear or a button labelled Settings.
- Adjust the displayed category or open the app’s notification settings for more controls.
This route is useful when an app has many categories. It normally takes you to the category responsible for the specific alert you selected, rather than making you identify it from a long list.
Choose between Silent, disabled, and Alerting
Silent
Silent removes sound and vibration for that notification type while leaving the notification available in the notification shade. Use it for updates you may want to read later but do not want interrupting you.

Silent is a per-category choice when the app exposes categories. If the app separates direct messages from promotional notices, for example, you can leave messages alerting and make promotions silent.

Turning off a category prevents that category’s notifications from being delivered through Android’s notification system. Use this when the messages are never useful, rather than when you merely want them quieter.
Alerting
Alerting leaves the category in its normal interruptive state. The exact visual and sound options shown alongside it vary by device and category. If you change a category to Silent and later need immediate attention again, return to the same screen and choose Alerting.
Turn off all notifications from the app
The app-level switch affects every notification that app sends. Use it only when no alert from the app is wanted. It is broader than disabling one category and can hide messages, security notices, or other information you still need.
Why a category may not appear
Android can show only channels that the app has created. Some apps expose several categories; others expose one general category or only an app-wide switch. If no category list is visible, check the app’s own notification preferences for finer controls.

If an app adds a new notification type later, Android may show a new category after that type has been used. Review the app page again when a new kind of alert starts appearing.
Decide which control fits the problem
The right setting depends on the scope of the interruption, whether you still need to see the message, and how long the change should last.

Use the narrowest control that solves the problem. A category setting preserves unrelated alerts; an app-wide switch is simpler but less selective; a Mode is appropriate when the same quiet rule should apply across multiple apps or at recurring times.
Use Do Not Disturb or Modes for broader quiet periods
Notification categories are persistent preferences for a particular app and type. They are not a substitute for a time-based quiet period. If you want most notifications to remain configured normally but not interrupt you during sleep or a meeting, open your phone’s Do Not Disturb or Modes controls.
Google’s documentation describes app filters within Modes. Depending on the phone and Android release, you can choose which apps may interrupt during a mode and define when it runs. Some setup instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, so older phones may show fewer scheduling or filtering options.
Use a category when the source itself is the problem: for example, one app’s promotional category is always unwanted. Use a Mode when the context is the problem: the same apps should be quiet during a recurring period but normal at other times.

Troubleshoot common notification-channel problems
The menu labels do not match
Search Settings for notifications. Open the result that lists app notifications, or use the touch-and-hold shortcut on an actual notification. Phone manufacturers rearrange menus, and an older Android version may use Apps & notifications instead of App notifications.
The app is missing from Most recent
Open All apps and select it there. The Most recent list is a convenience view, not a complete list of installed apps.
You changed a category, but another alert still makes noise
The alert may belong to a different category. Open that notification, touch and hold it, and inspect the category shown in its settings. Apps commonly separate different event types, so silencing one does not automatically silence the others.
Everything from the app disappeared
Check the app-level notification switch first. If it is off, turn it on and then review individual categories. If a Mode or Do Not Disturb is active, its rules may also be suppressing notifications; temporarily disable the mode or inspect its allowed-app settings.
A silent notification is still visible
That is expected. Silent notifications remain available in the notification shade; the Silent setting removes sound and vibration rather than removing the notification entirely. Turn the category off if you do not want it delivered.

Check both layers. An in-app preference may stop the event from being generated, while Android controls the behavior of the channel after it is generated. If the app provides a specific alert setting, adjust it there and then confirm the corresponding Android category.
The app cannot change the behavior back automatically
Once a channel exists, its visual and auditory behavior is controlled by the user in system settings. Reopen the category and select the behavior you want. Do not rely on the app to override a Silent or disabled channel programmatically.
A practical cleanup routine for noisy apps
Use this checklist when several apps have accumulated unwanted alerts:
- Start with the most recent noisy notification and identify its category through the long-press settings shortcut.
- Set low-priority updates to Silent when you still want a record of them.
- Turn off categories that have no value to you.
- Keep security, account, direct-message, and time-sensitive categories enabled when you rely on them.
- Use the app’s internal notification preferences to stop optional events at their source.
- Reserve Do Not Disturb or a Mode for situations that affect many apps at once.
- After changing settings, wait for one real notification from each important category to confirm that the useful alerts remain available.
Review the list again after installing an app, signing into a new account, or receiving a new kind of alert. Apps can add channels over time, and a newly created category may have its own default behavior.

What changes when you switch phones or reset Android
Notification-channel choices are system settings on the current device. If you move to another phone or reset the existing one, inspect the app notification pages again rather than assuming every category has the same state. The app must create its channels on that installation before Android can display controls for them.
Because channel behavior is ultimately controlled by the device owner, a restored app may still require a fresh review of its categories. This is especially important for apps that generate many optional alerts.
