How to Set Up Android Auto and Customize Its App Launcher

Android Auto setup has two paths: connect the phone to the car with a USB cable, or pair it wirelessly when both devices support wireless projection. First verify the phone, data plan, 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability (for wireless use), and the exact vehicle or stereo model. Complete the first setup while parked, then use the Android Auto settings on the phone to hide apps and change their order in the car’s launcher.

Check whether your phone and car are eligible

Android Auto is built into supported Android phones, so a separate Android Auto download is not required. Projection still depends on the phone’s Android version, an active mobile-data plan, the vehicle or stereo, and the connection method. Vehicle support is model-specific: a manufacturer may offer Android Auto in some trims or model years but not others. Check the compatibility information for your exact vehicle, head unit, or aftermarket stereo rather than relying only on the vehicle brand.

Requirement USB projection Wireless projection
Phone software Google’s current requirements list Android 9.0 (Pie) or newer. Google’s requirements page states that wireless projection works with any phone running Android 11.0, provided the other wireless requirements are met. Older Android versions need a compatibility check.
Mobile data Active data plan required. Active data plan required.
Wireless hardware Not needed for the projection connection. Phone must support 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Vehicle or stereo Must support Android Auto over USB. Must support wireless Android Auto; ordinary Bluetooth support is not enough.
Physical connection A high-quality USB cable that fits both devices. No USB cable is needed after pairing.
Unsupported edition Android (Go edition) devices are not supported. Android (Go edition) devices are not supported.

Requirements and menus can change with Android, Android Auto, and vehicle software updates. If your phone appears to meet the requirements but will not connect, check Google’s current Android Auto help and the vehicle maker’s instructions for your specific model.

Prepare the car and phone before connecting

  • Put the car in Park and switch on the infotainment system.
  • Allow the system to finish booting before you begin pairing or plugging in.
  • For a wired setup, identify the connector on the phone and the USB port in the vehicle before choosing a cable. The requirement is a high-quality cable; Google does not mandate one universal connector type or cable model.
  • For a wireless setup, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone before the first pairing.
  • Keep the phone unlocked and nearby while following the initial prompts.

Do not perform the first setup while moving. Once Android Auto has been configured, start driving only after the display and controls are ready.

Set up Android Auto with a USB cable

USB projection is the straightforward option when the car has a compatible USB port and the phone meets the wired requirements.

  1. Park and power up. Put the vehicle in Park and turn on the infotainment system. Wait for the normal car interface to appear.
  2. Connect the devices. Plug the phone into the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port with a high-quality cable. Some vehicles have more than one USB port, but not every port carries the data connection needed for projection.
  3. Accept the prompts. Follow the instructions on the phone and car display. The phone may ask to update Android Auto or grant permissions before the car interface opens.
  4. Finish before driving. Allow the connection and any permissions to complete while parked. After setup, Android Auto should be available from the vehicle’s infotainment menu.

If the USB connection does not start

  • Confirm that the phone is running Android 9.0 or newer, has an active data plan, and is not an Android (Go edition) device.
  • Try the vehicle’s designated Android Auto USB port and inspect the cable for damage. A cable that charges but cannot carry data will not establish projection.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the cable after the infotainment system has fully started.
  • Check the vehicle manual for a setting that enables smartphone projection.
  • If the phone asks for an Android Auto update, complete it and repeat the connection.
  • When the devices still do not connect, verify compatibility for the exact phone and vehicle, then use Google’s connection troubleshooting guidance or contact the vehicle manufacturer.

Set up Android Auto wirelessly

Wireless setup uses Bluetooth for the initial pairing and then establishes the projection connection through the supported wireless system. Both the phone and the car or stereo must support wireless Android Auto; pairing a phone for calls or music over ordinary Bluetooth does not prove that projection is supported.

  1. Verify wireless eligibility. Confirm that the phone has an active data plan, supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and meets the applicable Android version requirement. Confirm that the exact vehicle or stereo supports wireless Android Auto.
  2. Park and enable the required services. Turn on the infotainment system. On the phone, enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
  3. Open the car’s pairing process. On many vehicles, pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice-command button opens the phone-pairing screen. If that does not happen, use the pairing procedure in the vehicle maker’s manual.
  4. Pair over Bluetooth. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the vehicle when it appears, and accept the matching codes and permissions.
  5. Complete Android Auto prompts. Follow the phone and car instructions. After the first Bluetooth pairing, Android Auto should launch within a few seconds. If it does not, select Android Auto on the car display or follow the additional on-screen prompts.

Wireless setup checks

  • Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled until setup is complete.
  • Make sure the phone is connecting to the intended vehicle if several cars are saved in Bluetooth settings.
  • Recheck that the car supports wireless projection, not only Bluetooth hands-free calling.
  • If pairing succeeds but Android Auto does not open, select Android Auto on the vehicle display and repeat the prompts while parked.
  • For persistent failures, check the exact vehicle and phone compatibility information and then follow Google’s connection troubleshooting steps or contact the vehicle manufacturer.

Choose between wired and wireless projection

The documented differences are requirements and setup method, not a guaranteed speed or reliability advantage. Google’s help pages do not publish a universal test showing that one method is faster, more dependable, or better for every vehicle.

Decision point USB Wireless
Best fit A vehicle with Android Auto over USB, or a phone that does not meet wireless requirements. A vehicle and phone that both support wireless Android Auto and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
What you need in the car An Android Auto-capable USB data port. A compatible wireless Android Auto system.
What you need to carry A suitable, high-quality USB cable. No cable for the projection connection.
First connection Plug in and follow the prompts. Pair Bluetooth with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled, then follow Android Auto prompts.
What the sources establish Compatibility and cable quality are required. Compatibility, active data, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and the Bluetooth-based first pairing are required.

Use USB when your vehicle does not support wireless projection or when you prefer a physical connection. Use wireless only after confirming that both sides support it; a Bluetooth-only car cannot be upgraded to wireless Android Auto merely by pairing the phone.

Customize which apps appear in the Android Auto launcher

Launcher customization is done on the phone, not by dragging icons on the car’s touchscreen. Make changes while parked, then restart Android Auto so the vehicle reloads the updated launcher.

Why an app may not move where you expect

Android Auto has a full launcher and a separate recent-app area. The launcher opens the available app icons. The recent-app area is adaptive: it shows recently used navigation, media, and communication apps plus one additional app. Because Google describes that area separately, changing launcher order does not pin an icon in every part of the car display.

If you want navigation directions and media controls visible while another app occupies the main screen, open Android Auto settings on the phone and enable Show quick controls for apps. The setting’s availability and exact wording can differ by software version.

Add an app that is compatible with Android Auto

Installing an Android app on the phone does not automatically make it appear in the car. Android Auto exposes only apps that implement its supported car interface. Google’s Play Store compatibility listing covers categories such as navigation, messaging, and media.

  1. Open the Google Play Store on the phone and view the Android Auto-compatible app list.
  2. Sign in to a Google Account if the complete list is not visible.
  3. Make sure personalization is enabled in Google Play, because Google says those settings are required to see the complete compatible list.
  4. Install or update the compatible app on the phone.
  5. Return to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher and check whether the app can be shown and ordered.
  6. Restart Android Auto in the car to load the change.

Availability can vary by country, phone, Android version, and app release. An app may be listed as compatible yet be unavailable to your account or region, and an installed app may remain absent if its current version does not provide an Android Auto interface.

Fix a compatible app that disappeared

First check whether the app is still eligible

  • Open the app’s Play Store page and install any available update.
  • Confirm that it is still listed as Android Auto-compatible and that your Google Play account and region can access it.
  • Open Android Auto’s Customize launcher screen and make sure the app was not hidden.
  • Restart Android Auto after changing visibility or updating the app.

Samsung phones: check unused-app controls

Google documents a Samsung-specific case in which the phone temporarily disables an app that has not been used. Open the missing app on the phone to re-enable it. You can also look in the phone’s battery settings for Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep and turn the relevant control off. Samsung menu names vary by device and software version; contact the manufacturer if you cannot locate the option.

This is one documented explanation, not a universal diagnosis. On other phones, investigate compatibility, launcher visibility, app updates, and account or regional availability before changing battery settings.

Troubleshoot connection and launcher problems

What you see Likely check What to do
The phone charges but Android Auto does not open over USB. The cable or USB port may not provide a data connection. Use a high-quality cable, try the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable port, reconnect after the infotainment system starts, and verify compatibility.
Bluetooth pairing works, but wireless Android Auto never appears. The car may support Bluetooth but not wireless projection. Check the exact vehicle or stereo specification. Confirm 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup.
The launcher still shows an old order. Android Auto has not reloaded the phone’s launcher settings. Exit and restart Android Auto after saving the order. If necessary, disconnect and reconnect the phone while parked.
An installed app is missing. Installation alone does not establish Android Auto compatibility. Check Google Play’s compatible-app listing, account personalization, app updates, and the Customize launcher visibility list.
A previously visible app vanished on a Samsung phone. The phone may have disabled an unused app. Open the app on the phone, then review Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep.
The phone and car still cannot connect. Compatibility, vehicle settings, cable, or pairing procedure may be wrong. Repeat the applicable wired or wireless checklist, consult the vehicle manual, and use Google’s connection troubleshooting guidance or the vehicle manufacturer’s support.

A practical setup and customization checklist

  • Check the exact vehicle or stereo model for Android Auto support.
  • Confirm the phone’s Android edition and version; Android (Go edition) is not supported.
  • Keep an active data plan.
  • Choose USB only when you have a suitable data cable and compatible port; choose wireless only when the phone, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and vehicle all qualify.
  • Put the car in Park and turn on the infotainment system before the first setup.
  • For wireless pairing, enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
  • Use Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher to hide and reorder icons.
  • Restart Android Auto after launcher changes.
  • Remember that the adaptive recent-app area is separate from the full launcher.
  • For missing apps, verify Android Auto compatibility and investigate phone-level app disabling, including Samsung’s unused-app controls where applicable.

What to expect after setup

Once the phone and vehicle are compatible and paired, Android Auto presents only apps that support its car interface. The phone controls which compatible icons are visible and their order in the launcher, while the vehicle determines the projection hardware and some display behavior. Keeping the phone, compatible apps, and vehicle software current helps you distinguish a configuration problem from a feature that the specific car or app does not support.
