Google Quick Share lets you send files in either direction between an Android phone or tablet and a Windows PC without emailing files to yourself or buying a cable. Android 6 and later includes Quick Share; on Windows, install Google’s Quick Share app, turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth, and make the PC discoverable. Keep the devices within five metres, choose the recipient, and have the receiving device accept the transfer.
The setup takes a few minutes. The important decisions are whether your PC is a standard 64-bit Windows computer, an ARM-based Windows 11 computer, or a Samsung PC; which devices you allow to discover you; and which device starts the transfer. This guide covers installation, both transfer directions, privacy controls, and fixes for devices that do not appear.

What Quick Share does
Quick Share is Android’s nearby file-transfer feature. It uses the wireless capabilities already present in your devices so you can move photos, videos, documents, and other files between an Android device and a nearby Windows computer. The transfer works both ways:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Android to Windows: select files on the phone or tablet, choose the Windows PC in Quick Share, and approve the incoming transfer on the computer.
- Windows to Android: select files or folders in the Windows app, choose the Android device, and wait for the recipient to accept.
Both devices must be close, have Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and be visible to one another. Google’s current guidance recommends a maximum distance of five metres. The receiving person still controls the final step: an incoming transfer is not completed until it is accepted.

Quick Share is software rather than a paid accessory. Android 6 and later has the feature built in, while Windows users download the official app. Google says that all Quick Share transfers are protected by end-to-end encryption; see the Google Android file-transfer guide for the current product information.
Check compatibility before you start
Use this table to identify the correct Windows setup. The Windows app’s requirements differ for conventional x86/64 computers, ARM computers, and Samsung PCs.
| Device | Requirement | What to install or use |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Android 6 or later | Quick Share is built in; no separate Android download is required. |
| Standard Windows PC | 64-bit Windows 10 or later | Install Google’s Quick Share for Windows app. |
| ARM-based Windows PC | Windows 11 or later | Install the Windows app only on a supported ARM edition. |
| Samsung PC | Use the manufacturer-specific Windows software | Install Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store instead of Google’s Windows app. |
Google’s compatibility pages can change as Windows releases and app packages are updated. Confirm the current requirements on Google’s Quick Share for Windows page if your computer uses an unusual processor or an older Windows edition.
Identify your Windows edition and processor
- Open Settings on Windows and choose System, then About.
- Check Windows specifications to verify that you are running Windows 10 or later. An ARM computer must be running Windows 11 or later.
- Check System type. Google’s standard Windows requirement is a 64-bit installation.
If the PC is a Samsung model, treat it as the Samsung-PC exception even when the Windows version is otherwise compatible. The two Quick Share apps are separate Windows distributions.
Prepare both devices
Complete these checks before opening the share menu. They prevent most discovery failures.

- Place the phone or tablet and the PC close together. Google specifies a maximum proximity of five metres.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on the Windows PC.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and Location on the Android device. If a device cannot be found, enable Location on the PC as well; Google lists these radios and permissions among the troubleshooting checks.
- Keep the Windows Quick Share app running while you initiate or receive a transfer.
- Set each device’s Quick Share visibility so the other device is allowed to discover it.
- Close any transfer that is already waiting for approval. A pending request can make a new attempt appear unresponsive.
You do not need to create an email attachment or upload the file to a cloud service. Quick Share handles the nearby exchange after the two devices can see each other.
Install Quick Share on Windows
Android already contains Quick Share on supported versions. Windows requires an app installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On the Windows PC, open Google’s official download page: android.com/filetransfer.
- Download the Quick Share app for Windows and run the installer.
- Complete the installation, then open Quick Share from the Start menu.
- In the app, open its visibility or device-discovery settings and choose who is allowed to find the PC. Select a setting broad enough for your transfer, but no broader than necessary.
- Leave Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth enabled and keep the app available while you test the connection.
Google describes its Windows app as intended for non-Samsung PCs. If the computer is a Samsung PC, install Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store instead. Keep that app updated when receiving files from a non-Samsung Android device.
What the first launch should show
The app should open to a window where you can choose files to send and manage visibility for incoming transfers. If Windows blocks the app at installation, verify that the system is a supported 64-bit Windows 10-or-later edition, or a supported ARM Windows 11-or-later edition. Installing an unofficial package will not resolve an architecture mismatch; use the official Windows distribution.
Set up Quick Share on Android
There is no separate Android installation on a supported device. Quick Share is available from the Android sharing interface.

- Open the file manager, gallery, or other app containing the item you want to send.
- Select one or more photos or files and tap Share.
- Choose Quick Share. If it is not visible in the first row, expand the share sheet and look for it among the available actions.
- Open the Quick Share visibility controls and allow discovery by the Windows PC for the duration of the transfer.
- Confirm that Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and Location are enabled if the Windows PC does not appear.
The exact wording and position of visibility controls can vary by Android manufacturer and version. The function is the same: it determines which nearby devices may discover the Android device and offer a file.
Send files from Android to Windows
Use this direction when the source files are on your phone or tablet.
- Keep the Android device and Windows PC within the recommended range and make sure the PC’s Quick Share visibility allows discovery.
- On Android, open the gallery or file manager and select the photos, videos, documents, or other files.
- Tap Share, then select Quick Share.
- Wait for the nearby-device list to populate and tap the Windows PC’s name.
- Watch the Windows PC for an incoming-transfer prompt. Accept it on the PC.
- Keep both devices awake and nearby until Quick Share reports that the transfer is complete.
If the PC is missing from the list, stop at the discovery step rather than repeatedly tapping Share. Check visibility, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Location, Windows compatibility, and distance using the troubleshooting section below.
Sending several items
Select multiple files in the Android app before opening the share sheet. Grouping items in one request is usually simpler than starting a separate request for each photo. The Android app you use determines how selection works, but the destination process remains the same: choose Quick Share, select the PC, and accept on Windows.
Send files or folders from Windows to Android
The Windows app can send individual files and folders to an Android phone or tablet.

- Open Quick Share on Windows and confirm that the Android device is allowed to discover the PC or that the PC can discover the Android device under its current visibility setting.
- Choose Select files or Select folders in the app. You can also drag files or folders into the Quick Share window.
- When nearby devices appear, select the Android phone or tablet.
- Look at the Android device for the incoming-transfer request.
- Have the recipient tap Accept.
- Wait for the completion message before closing Quick Share or moving either device away.
A folder transfer preserves the folder grouping as Quick Share sends it to the Android device. If you only need a few items, selecting those files individually can make it easier for the recipient to identify what is being offered.
Choose who can discover each device
Visibility is the control that determines whether another nearby device can see your phone, tablet, or PC in Quick Share. The available labels can differ by Android version, device maker, and Windows app release, so use the narrowest option that still lets your intended recipient connect.
| Situation | Visibility approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One transfer to a known device | Temporarily allow discovery by that device or the smallest available group | Reduces unsolicited requests while you complete the exchange. |
| Repeated transfers between your own devices | Use a setting that recognizes your devices when available | Avoids making the PC or phone broadly discoverable every time. |
| Receiving from someone nearby | Use a broader setting only for the transfer, then narrow it again | The recipient must be visible before the sender can select it. |
| No transfer in progress | Choose the most restrictive visibility option offered | Prevents nearby people from presenting unnecessary requests. |
Visibility does not silently accept files. The recipient must still approve each incoming transfer. If an unexpected request appears, decline it and reduce discoverability before trying again.

Google states that “All Quick Share transfers are protected by E2E encryption.” That protects the transfer while it is being exchanged, but your choices still matter: a device that is visible to a larger group can receive more requests, and accepting an unwanted file can still create a local security problem.

- Accept requests only when you recognize the sending device and expected content.
- Do not approve a request merely because the device name looks familiar; confirm who is sending it.
- After a public or group transfer, return the device to a more restrictive visibility setting.
- Use the official Google Windows download page, or Samsung’s Microsoft Store app for a Samsung PC.
Quick Share’s encryption and recipient approval address the wireless transfer and consent step. They do not replace normal device protections such as a screen lock, current operating-system updates, or care when opening files from unknown people.

Troubleshoot a missing device or failed transfer
The Windows PC does not appear on Android
- Open Quick Share on Windows and review its visibility setting. The PC must be discoverable to the Android device.
- Confirm that Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are turned on in Windows.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and Location on Android. If the PC still does not appear, enable Location on Windows too.
- Move the devices closer together and retry the discovery step.
- Verify that the PC meets the 64-bit Windows 10-or-later requirement, or the ARM-specific Windows 11-or-later requirement.
- Make sure you installed the official app, not an unrelated file-sharing utility.
The Android phone or tablet does not appear on Windows
- Open Quick Share on Android and make the device discoverable to the PC.
- Check Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and Location on Android and Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on Windows.
- Keep the Android screen available while the Windows app searches.
- Move both devices closer and wait for the nearby-device list to refresh.
- Confirm that the Android device runs version 6 or later.
The transfer request appears, but nothing arrives
- Look at the receiving device and explicitly accept the request. Quick Share waits for that approval.
- Do not close the app, disable Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi, or separate the devices while the transfer is in progress.
- Cancel a stale request on both devices and start a new request from the original file.
- For a Samsung PC, replace Google’s Windows app with Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store and keep it updated.
The installer says the PC is unsupported
Check the system type in Settings > System > About. A standard installation must be 64-bit Windows 10 or later. An ARM-based computer requires Windows 11 or later under Google’s current guidance. A Samsung PC follows the Samsung-app path rather than Google’s Windows-app path. If the version or architecture does not meet those requirements, Quick Share for Windows cannot be made compatible by changing visibility settings.
Discovery works only intermittently
- Keep the devices near one another and avoid moving the phone out of range during discovery.
- Recheck visibility after reopening the app; a setting that was changed for a previous transfer may still be active.
- Toggle Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth off and on, then reopen Quick Share on both devices.
- Install current updates for the Windows app or, on a Samsung PC, the Samsung app.
- Start with a small file to distinguish a discovery problem from an issue involving a particular large or complex item.
A reliable routine for regular transfers
For occasional sharing, the shortest routine is: open Quick Share on Windows, select the files, choose the Android device, and accept on Android. For frequent exchanges, use a repeatable checklist:
- Open the Windows app before selecting files on Android or before dragging items into the PC window.
- Confirm both devices’ visibility settings before each new person sends a file.
- Keep the devices in the same room and within the recommended range.
- Accept only the request you expect, then wait for the completion notice.
- Return visibility to the most restrictive setting after the transfer.
This routine avoids the two most common causes of confusion: a device that is working but hidden by its visibility setting, and a request that is waiting for the recipient’s approval.
