How to Set Up and Use Your Samsung Refrigerator for Fresher Food

Set your Samsung refrigerator near 38°F and its freezer near -2°F as a starting point, then verify the actual temperature with a thermometer. Samsung’s typical settings are designed to keep food within safe ranges, but controls and recommendations vary by model.

Choose safe refrigerator and freezer temperatures

Samsung’s U.S. support guidance relays USDA advice to keep refrigerated food below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F. Samsung’s typical control settings are 38°F for the refrigerator and -2°F for the freezer. The safety thresholds and the appliance’s typical settings are different: use the setpoints as a practical starting point, while checking that the compartments remain below the respective thresholds.

Not every Samsung model presents temperatures the same way. Some panels use bars rather than degrees; Samsung notes that three illuminated bars may be the recommended setting on certain models. Follow the guidance in the manual for your exact refrigerator if its panel or recommendations differ. Samsung’s temperature-setting guidance explains the typical values and model variation.

Change the setting using the controls on your model

Samsung refrigerators use different control layouts. Identify the panel you have before changing a setting; the following paths describe common types, not a universal sequence.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung 17.5 cu. ft. Smart Counter Depth 3-Door French Door Refrigerator, Stainless Steel, RF18A5101SR/AA
  • COUNTER DEPTH: Built-in look for a seamless fit. The smooth and streamlined exterior design features beautiful flat doors and easy-to-open recessed handles that blend seamlessly into your cabinetry, adding function and style to your kitchen.
  • WiFi CONNECTIVITY: Wi-Fi connectivity on your fridge isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s essential for safety and energy conservation. You’ll get immediate notifications if the temperature drops due to a power outage or if you accidentally leave the door open.
  • TWIN COOLING PLUS: Independent fridge and freezer controls keep food fresher, longer.
  • ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED: Eco-friendly and energy-efficient.
  • FINGERPRINT-RESISTANT FINISH: Finish that withstands everyday smudges so you spend less time cleaning.

Family Hub models

On supported Family Hub models, adjust temperatures through the SmartThings app. Some older Family Hub models use the Fridge Manager app on the refrigerator’s screen instead. The exact app and available controls depend on the model.

Panels with Fridge and Freezer buttons

On button-based panels, press the Fridge or Freezer control to select the compartment, then use the panel’s temperature controls to choose the desired setting. The sequence and labels vary across models, so check the manual if the display does not match these descriptions.

Panels with arrow buttons and a menu

Some models use arrow buttons to navigate options for Fridge, Freezer, and FlexZone. Select the compartment or zone, then choose the setting shown on the display. Certain models also offer Power Cool or Power Freeze; these are model-dependent functions, so use them only as described in your manual.

Samsung’s control instructions cover several panel types and direct owners to model-specific guidance when needed.

Measure the temperature instead of trusting the display alone

A refrigerator’s displayed temperature may represent an average, and Samsung says areas toward the back and bottom can be colder. To check the refrigerator, put a thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment, close the doors, and leave it in place for up to eight hours before reading it. For the freezer, place the thermometer between frozen packages; do not put it in water.

After changing a temperature setting, allow up to 28 hours before checking whether the compartment has settled at the new temperature. This waiting period helps distinguish a normal adjustment from a persistent cooling problem. See Samsung’s temperature-checking instructions for the measurement method.

Use crisper-drawer humidity controls thoughtfully

Many Samsung crisper drawers have humidity controls. Choose a setting with the fruits and vegetables you are storing in mind, and consult the refrigerator’s manual for the controls on your particular drawer. Samsung’s general guidance does not establish one setting that applies to every type of produce or every model, so avoid treating a single position as universal.

Keep the refrigerator clean and replace the correct filter

Clean on a regular schedule

Samsung recommends a deep clean every six months. Follow the care and cleaning directions in your model’s manual, particularly for removable parts and surfaces that require specific handling. Samsung’s refrigerator maintenance guidance includes its cleaning recommendations.

  • DEDICATED PANTRY DOORS: Two separate drawers that let you store more deli items, meat, poultry, and fish, including larger-sized items.

Replace the water filter and reset its reminder

Samsung recommends replacing the water filter every six months and resetting the filter reminder after replacement. Filter location and compatibility vary by refrigerator. Samsung identifies filter types HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1; check the label on the existing filter or your appliance manual to confirm the correct code before buying a replacement. A filter that fits another Samsung refrigerator is not necessarily compatible with yours.

Samsung says its replacement filters meet NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, and 401. That statement is Samsung’s claim about its filters; it does not establish performance for every contaminant or for filters from other makers. See Samsung’s filter replacement guide for its filter-identification and reminder-reset instructions.

Troubleshoot cooling and ice problems

If the refrigerator seems warm

If you recently changed the setting, give the appliance up to 28 hours to reach it before deciding the adjustment failed. Samsung also notes that placing hot food inside can raise the compartment temperature. Keep door seals clean so the doors can close properly. If cooling remains inadequate after the settling period and these simple checks, consult the manual or contact Samsung support for model-specific troubleshooting.

If the ice maker produces little or no ice

Samsung says the freezer needs to be at 0°F or colder for ice production. Its ice-maker troubleshooting guidance lists 20 psi as the minimum water pressure; low pressure can result in small or shattered cubes. Samsung also recommends discarding unused ice every other week to help reduce clumping.

For a stuck bucket or other ice-maker issue that does not resolve with the model’s instructions, use Samsung’s service guidance rather than forcing parts or attempting an improvised defrost. Persistent ice-making problems may require support or service. See Samsung’s ice-maker troubleshooting guide and its refrigerator cooling guide.
