To use the Sony ULT TOWER 5, charge it for more than an hour, power it on, select “ULT TOWER 5” in your phone’s Bluetooth settings, and start playback. After that, Sony Sound Connect adds battery status, equalizer, lighting, input, karaoke, and speaker-linking controls. The important qualifications are easy to miss: battery life depends heavily on volume and lighting, USB-A and USB-C serve different purposes, Party Chain is not interchangeable with older Sony linking systems, and IPX4 protection applies only with the speaker vertical and every cover closed.
What you need before starting
- The Sony ULT TOWER 5 (model SRS-ULT500).
- The supplied AC power cord and a wall outlet for initial charging.
- A Bluetooth phone, tablet, or computer for the quickest setup.
- Optional: Sony Sound Connect for sound, lighting, battery, karaoke, and party controls.
- Optional: a commercially available dynamic microphone with a standard 6.3 mm plug for karaoke.
The current Sony Help Guide is listed as version 1 and was released September 18, 2026. App labels and available functions can change with software updates, so the wording on your screen may differ slightly.

Charge the speaker safely before first use
- Connect the supplied AC power cord to the AC input on the rear of the speaker.
- Plug the other end into a wall outlet.
- Charge the built-in battery for more than one hour before your first listening session. Sony estimates about three hours for a full charge from empty when the speaker is powered off.
- When you disconnect the cord, close and secure the rear port cover.
Do not charge where water may splash. The charging instructions state that the supplied accessories and the speaker’s ports and jacks are not water resistant, even though the speaker itself has a limited IPX4 rating under specific placement conditions.
Pair a phone over Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the simplest first connection. Sony states in its Help Guide: “When you use the speaker for the first time after purchase, the speaker automatically enters pairing mode.”

- Press the speaker’s power button. On first use, it enters Bluetooth pairing mode automatically and the Bluetooth indicator double-flashes.
- Place your phone within 1 m (3.2 ft) of the speaker.
- Turn on Bluetooth in the phone’s settings and choose ULT TOWER 5 from the device list.
- Lower the phone and speaker volume, or stop playback, before completing the connection. This prevents a sudden loud output when the link succeeds.
- Start music, a podcast, or another audio source on the phone. A notification sound confirms a successful connection and the Bluetooth indicator becomes steady.
For later sessions, the last connected device may reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is enabled. Pairing mode releases after about five minutes if no connection is made. If that happens, press the speaker’s Bluetooth button and select ULT TOWER 5 again in the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
If the phone cannot find the speaker
- Move the phone within 1 m of the speaker.
- Check that the speaker is on and the Bluetooth indicator is flashing.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again on the phone.
- If pairing mode timed out, press the speaker’s Bluetooth button to restart it.
- Lower volume before trying again, then confirm that the phone selected ULT TOWER 5 rather than another nearby device.
Install and use Sony Sound Connect
The speaker works over Bluetooth without the app, but Sound Connect exposes controls that are not practical from the hardware alone. It can show remaining battery, select an input, change sound effects and lighting, choose Bluetooth priority, assign the ULT button, and manage Battery Care, STAMINA, and standby options. It also provides app-enabled party and karaoke features.
After installing the app, allow it to connect to the ULT TOWER 5 and check for updates. Sony requires an up-to-date Sound Connect installation for Karaoke, DJ Control, and Party Light. The exact labels can change as the app is updated.

- Battery status: Check remaining charge before taking the speaker away from AC power.
- Input: Select Bluetooth, USB-A, USB-C, or a wired source as appropriate.
- Sound: Adjust the equalizer and choose the available sound behavior.
- Bluetooth priority: Choose a setting aimed at sound quality or connection stability.
- Lighting: Change or disable the speaker’s lights.
- Battery Care: Limit the maximum charge to about 90 percent to favor long-term battery life.
- STAMINA: Reduce power consumption by changing sound-effect and lighting behavior.
- Standby: Configure available standby options.
Sony notes that environment optimization may not work as intended in some surroundings. Treat it as an optional aid, not a guarantee that every room will be calibrated correctly.

Choose a sound mode and set volume
The ULT TOWER 5 provides four sound modes: ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, and LIVE. The physical ULT button changes the sound mode and volume behavior; Sound Connect provides the equalizer and lets you assign LIVE to the ULT button.
- Begin at a low volume.
- Choose FLAT as a neutral starting point.
- Try ULT1 or ULT2 if you want the speaker’s enhanced bass presentation.
- Use the app’s 10-band custom equalizer for more specific adjustments.
ULT1 and ULT2 are also the modes used in Sony’s published battery estimates, so changing mode, volume, or lighting changes the expected runtime.
Connect other audio sources
The three physical media routes are not interchangeable. Select the connection based on what the source device actually outputs and what the speaker’s input accepts.

Play files from a USB-A drive
- Format the storage device with a supported FAT variant; do not use exFAT.
- Copy your audio files to the drive.
- Connect the drive to the speaker’s USB-A port.
- Turn the FUNCTION dial to USB-A.
- If playback does not begin, try another supported drive. Sony cautions that nominal compatibility does not guarantee that every drive will work.
An iPhone cannot be used as a USB-A storage source for this speaker.

Use USB-C audio
- Connect a USB-Audio-compatible computer or smartphone to the speaker’s USB-C port.
- On the speaker, turn the FUNCTION dial to USB-C.
- Select the ULT TOWER 5 as the source in the computer or phone’s audio settings if necessary.
Do not put a storage drive on USB-C expecting USB file playback; Sony specifies USB-C audio rather than USB Mass Storage Class support.
Connect a mixer or DJ device
Use the speaker’s RCA or XLR input that matches the source device’s output. Check both ends before buying or plugging in a cable. If the source has RCA output, an XLR-only cable is not automatically the correct choice, and vice versa. Select the corresponding input with the FUNCTION dial or in Sound Connect.
Use the speaker to charge another device
Sony documents USB-A and USB-C charging with conditions. In particular, the Help Guide says that charging another device requires the speaker to be on and connected to AC for some regions or operating conditions. This is not a universal power-bank promise. Keep the port covers closed after use and follow the charging instructions for your region.

Sony’s “approximately 20 hours” headline is a manufacturer estimate, not a fixed runtime. The Help Guide gives about 20 hours with Bluetooth connected, volume 16, ULT1 or ULT2 selected, Battery Care off, and lighting deactivated. Sony’s US product page separately describes its 20-hour test with ULT1/2 on, volume 17, and lighting off. Those are different stated test conditions, and actual duration varies with volume, music, temperature, and use.

For the longest practical session, reduce volume, turn lighting off, and avoid unnecessary high-power effects. If you want to preserve battery longevity, enable Battery Care; it limits maximum charge to about 90 percent and therefore leaves less playback time per charge. STAMINA reduces power consumption by changing sound-effect and lighting settings; Sony says ULT POWER SOUND effects and lighting are turned off while STAMINA is enabled.
Use karaoke
- Update Sound Connect before attempting karaoke.
- Plug a commercially available dynamic microphone with a standard 6.3 mm plug into the appropriate microphone input.
- Turn the microphone and speaker levels up gradually, starting low to avoid feedback or an unexpectedly loud signal.
- Open the karaoke controls in Sound Connect to access the available scoring and effects features.
The microphone is sold separately. Karaoke, DJ Control, and Party Light availability can vary by region and by app or speaker software version, so an option shown in one account or country may not appear in another.

Sony describes two different concepts: Stereo Pair is for two-speaker playback, while Party Chain uses Auracast broadcast to link compatible speakers for a larger multi-speaker setup. Do not assume that every Sony wireless-party feature can be combined.

Stereo Pair
Use Stereo Pair when you have two compatible speakers and want them to operate as a stereo set. Confirm that both units are the correct compatible models, update their software, and follow the Stereo Pair controls in Sound Connect. The exact app labels may change with updates.

Party Chain
- Update the software on every participating speaker.
- Confirm that every unit is a Party Chain-compatible model.
- Press the Party Chain button on each speaker as directed by Sony’s Help Guide.
- Start playback through the one connected speaker that is acting as the source.
Sony says Party Chain supports up to 100 compatible speakers. The compatibility guidance lists ULT TOWER MAX (SRS-ULT3000), ULT TOWER 7 (SRS-ULT700), and ULT TOWER 5 (SRS-ULT500) as Party Chain devices. Older Party Connect or Wireless Party Chain speakers cannot be mixed into Party Chain. Check the actual model number and current firmware before planning an event.
Placement, water protection, and everyday care
Sony rates the speaker IPX4 when it is placed vertically. The product-page qualification also requires every port and cover to be firmly closed. This means protection from water splashes under the stated conditions, not waterproofing.
- Keep the speaker vertical when relying on the IPX4 rating.
- Close the rear cover after disconnecting AC, USB, or other cables.
- Do not charge where water can splash.
- Keep the supplied accessories and exposed ports away from water; Sony explicitly says they are not water resistant.
- Before using a wired input, check that the plug and the speaker socket are dry and that the connection matches.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
No sound after pairing
- Confirm the phone is outputting audio to ULT TOWER 5 rather than its own speaker or another Bluetooth device.
- Raise volume slowly on both devices.
- Check the selected input; the FUNCTION dial may still be set to USB or a wired source.
Pairing mode disappeared
Pairing mode can release after about five minutes. Press the Bluetooth button and repeat the device-selection step.

USB drive is rejected
Verify that it is a USB Mass Storage Class device formatted with a FAT variant other than exFAT. Sony warns that some apparently compatible drives still may not work, and an iPhone is not supported through USB-A.
Battery drains much faster than expected
Compare your use with Sony’s conditions: high volume and lighting can reduce the estimate from about 20 hours to about 12 hours, or to approximately two hours at volume 50 with lighting on. Temperature, songs, sound mode, and other use also affect the result.
A linked speaker will not join
Check the model and firmware. Party Chain requires compatible Auracast speakers and cannot mix older Party Connect or Wireless Party Chain units. Update all participating speakers before trying again.

Recommended first-day setup
- Charge for more than one hour, keeping the speaker and accessories dry.
- Power on and pair your phone within 1 m by selecting ULT TOWER 5.
- Install Sound Connect, update it, and check the speaker’s firmware.
- Start in FLAT mode at low volume, then test ULT1 or ULT2 and adjust the 10-band EQ if needed.
- Decide whether lighting is worth the battery trade-off for your session.
- If you need karaoke or multiple speakers, verify the microphone type, regional app availability, model compatibility, and current software before the event.
Once those checks are complete, everyday operation is straightforward: Bluetooth for convenience, USB-A for supported storage, USB-C for USB Audio, RCA/XLR for matched line-level equipment, and Sound Connect for the settings that the physical controls do not expose.
