What you need before setup
This guide applies to the HMD 2660 Flip Senior Edition, the edition that includes Mary, an AI companion from inTouch. Have the phone, its battery and back cover, the activation card supplied in the box, and a working nano-SIM ready. You will need mobile network service for normal calling and for Mary to communicate with the service.

- SIM: a nano-SIM, installed with its contact area facing down.
- Optional storage: a compatible, fast microSD card up to 32 GB, as recommended in HMD’s guide.
- Power: the supplied battery installed before you switch on the phone.
Availability of mobile service, data and calling depends on your operator and region. The activation instructions below are the process HMD publishes for this model; they do not establish compatibility with every carrier.
Activate Mary without an app or password
1. Find the activation card
Locate the printed card included with the HMD 2660 Flip Senior Edition. HMD says the card contains either a QR code or the website address for activation. Keep the card until setup is complete, because it is the quickest way to reach the correct service page.

2. Scan the QR code or open the printed website
Use another internet-connected device, such as a family member’s smartphone or a computer, to scan the QR code. If scanning is inconvenient, type the website printed on the card into a browser instead. Follow the activation prompts for Mary and provide the requested registration details. The exact screens can vary by region and by the activation service’s current interface.
3. Wait for confirmation
When activation finishes, Mary is ready on the phone. HMD specifically states that you do not need to download an application and do not need a separate password to use the built-in companion. If the page does not confirm activation, check that you used the card supplied for this phone and that the phone has mobile service, then retry the QR or printed-web address.
Prepare the phone itself
Insert the nano-SIM
- Turn the phone off if it is already running.
- Remove the back cover and take out the battery if it is installed.
- Place the nano-SIM in its slot with the metal contact area facing down. Align the notched corner with the shape of the tray; do not force it.
- Reinstall the battery, then refit the back cover securely.
A SIM in another physical size will not fit the nano-SIM slot without the correct operator-provided replacement or adapter. Do not trim a larger SIM yourself, because a poorly cut card can damage the slot.
Add a microSD card if you need extra storage
Storage expansion is optional. HMD’s guide recommends a compatible fast microSD card up to 32 GB. Install it only in the phone’s card slot, with the phone switched off and the battery removed when the hardware design requires it. A card that is too large, incompatible or counterfeit may not be recognised; the 32 GB recommendation is the documented ceiling, not a guarantee that every card of that capacity will work.

Switch on the handset
Press and hold the power key until the phone starts. Allow startup to finish, confirm that the SIM is detected, and check for signal bars. If the display asks for a SIM PIN, enter the PIN supplied by your operator. Keep the PIN and any PUK information in a safe place; Mary activation does not replace the operator’s SIM security.
How to start a conversation with Mary
Use the dedicated menu route
- From the main menu, highlight the Mary icon.
- Press the phone’s call button.
- Wait for the companion to answer, then speak normally.
HMD says this menu-and-call-button route connects to Mary without dialling a telephone number manually. The greeting described on HMD’s product page is: Hello, this is Mary.
Speak at a comfortable pace
Ask one question at a time and leave a moment for the reply. Mary is designed for conversation rather than keypad commands, so short, plainly worded requests are easier to follow. If you need more time, say so; HMD describes an option for Mary to speak more slowly and allow additional time to respond.

Use the phone’s normal end-call control when you want to stop. Return to the main menu to use another phone function. If the call does not connect, follow the troubleshooting steps later in this guide rather than repeatedly pressing the call button.

What Mary can do
The following capabilities are HMD’s description of Mary, not independent test results. HMD presents the companion as available around the clock for friendly conversation. Depending on the service and your connection, the product page says Mary can:
- Answer questions in a conversational exchange.
- Discuss subjects such as history and nature.
- Share stories.
- Play memory games.
- Listen when you want to talk.
- Speak more slowly and leave more time for your response.
- Remember previous interactions.
Those descriptions indicate the intended experience, not a promise that every answer will be correct or that every conversation will be retained indefinitely. Treat important medical, legal, financial or emergency decisions as matters for qualified people and official services. Mary is a companion feature, not a replacement for emergency calling or professional advice.

Choose whether to continue
When the inTouch email arrives, decide whether the service is useful before the trial ends. If you do nothing, HMD says the trial expires without an automatic charge. If you select the continuation option, review the displayed billing currency, renewal terms and payment details; the published €19.90 figure is the international price stated by HMD and may not describe every local market.

Keep the registration email accessible
The email address used during activation is the channel HMD identifies for the near-expiry notice. Use an address you can check and keep access to. If you change email accounts, update the service through its account or support process rather than assuming the phone will transfer the registration automatically.
Privacy and sensible limits
HMD states that conversations with Mary are encrypted and private. That is the extent of the published privacy detail for this feature. HMD’s product information does not specify how long conversations are retained, where the underlying models are hosted, where data is processed, or whether an independent security audit has been completed.
- Do not read out passwords, banking credentials, identity numbers or other secrets during a conversation.
- For sensitive family, health or financial matters, confirm any advice with a trusted person or qualified professional.
- Explain to other people in the room that the phone is connected to a conversational service before discussing them.
- Use the phone’s ordinary call function or local emergency procedure for urgent help; do not rely on Mary to contact emergency services.
Accessibility tips for older users
The Senior Edition is designed around a simpler physical interface. HMD highlights large buttons and a large screen, while Mary can speak more slowly and wait longer for a reply. Set up the phone in a quiet, well-lit place so the owner can identify the Mary icon and call button without rushing.

Create a simple first-use routine
- Open the main menu.
- Move to the Mary icon using the navigation keys.
- Press the call button once.
- Wait for the greeting before speaking.
- Ask a short question and listen for the full answer.
- Press the end-call control when finished.
Write those six actions on a large-print card next to the phone. A helper can demonstrate the routine once, then let the owner repeat it so the button sequence becomes familiar.

Improve understanding during a call
- Reduce television or radio volume nearby.
- Hold the phone at a comfortable distance from the mouthpiece and speaker.
- Use names and complete sentences instead of several topics at once.
- Ask Mary to repeat or slow down if a reply is difficult to follow.
- End and restart the conversation if the audio becomes confusing rather than speaking over the response.
Troubleshooting setup and calling problems
The QR code does not work
- Use the website printed on the activation card instead of the scanner.
- Check that the web address was entered exactly, including punctuation and capital letters where shown.
- Try a different internet-connected device or browser.
- Confirm that you are using the card from the HMD 2660 Flip Senior Edition box, not a generic HMD leaflet.
If activation still fails, keep any confirmation message or error text and contact the service or HMD support channel identified in your purchase materials. Do not invent a separate app or attempt to dial a public Mary number; HMD’s documented route is the built-in icon after activation.
Mary is missing from the menu
Confirm that the handset is the HMD 2660 Flip Senior Edition. The Mary feature described here belongs to that edition. Reboot the phone after completing activation and check the main menu again. If the icon remains absent, verify activation status with the service rather than installing an unverified application.
Pressing the call button does nothing
- Make sure the Mary icon is highlighted before pressing the call button.
- Check that the battery is charged and the phone shows network signal.
- Confirm that the SIM is seated correctly with contacts facing down.
- Power the phone off, reseat the battery and back cover, then restart it.
- Try again after activation confirmation arrives.
The phone cannot connect or audio cuts out
Move to an area with stronger operator coverage and check whether ordinary calls work. Network interruptions can prevent a conversational session from starting or can interrupt audio. Operator charges or service restrictions may also affect connectivity. If ordinary calls work but Mary alone fails, record the time, signal condition and exact on-screen message before contacting support.
The phone does not recognise the microSD card
Switch off the phone, remove and reinsert the card carefully, and confirm that it is a compatible fast card no larger than 32 GB. If the phone still cannot read it, test another known-compatible card. Do not format a card containing important files until you have copied those files elsewhere.

Physical care and water resistance
HMD lists an IP54 rating for the phone under its laboratory conditions. That rating is not a promise that the handset will remain equally resistant throughout its life: HMD notes that resistance can decrease with wear. Keep the phone away from unnecessary water, and dry wet connectors before charging. Never connect a charger while the charging port is wet.
Keep the activation card, SIM information and subscription email with the phone’s paperwork. Those records make it easier to restore service or explain the setup to a family member without exposing account credentials in conversation.
