Mac Dictation turns speech into text anywhere you can type. Enable it in Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, choose a language and microphone, then start it with your configured shortcut or the Mac’s Microphone key. Speak punctuation and formatting commands aloud, and press Escape to stop.
What Mac Dictation does
Standard macOS Dictation is a text-entry feature. It places your spoken words into the active text field in apps such as word processors, email, notes, web forms and messaging tools. It is different from a voice assistant: Dictation listens for speech and transcribes it, while Voice Control is designed to operate the Mac itself.

Dictation works wherever the insertion point accepts typed text. Click in the document or field first, start Dictation, and speak naturally. A highlighted or pulsing cursor, or a readiness tone, shows that the Mac is listening. On Macs with Apple silicon, you can continue using the keyboard while speaking; after you stop typing, the cursor returns to Dictation.
Language support, Auto-punctuation and other features differ by language and region. If an option described here is missing, check the language and region selected in the Dictation panel rather than assuming the feature is broken.

Before you enable Dictation
Check the microphone
A Mac with a working internal microphone needs no extra hardware. If your Mac has no internal microphone, connect an external microphone or a USB headset with microphone before configuring Dictation. A headset can also reduce room noise and echo, while a separate microphone can help when the built-in input level is too low.
After connecting a device, open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Input. Select the microphone and speak to confirm that the input meter responds. Raise the input volume if the meter barely moves.
Know which feature you need
Choose standard Dictation when your goal is to enter words in a text field. Choose Voice Control when you need spoken commands to replace keyboard, mouse or trackpad actions, such as opening menus, clicking controls or navigating the system. Standard Dictation is not available while Voice Control is turned on, so do not enable both expecting them to transcribe simultaneously.

- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard in the sidebar.
- Scroll to Dictation and open it.
- Turn Dictation on. If macOS asks for confirmation, choose Enable.
- Choose the microphone source. Select Automatic if you want macOS to choose, or select the connected microphone you tested in Sound settings.
- Open the language editor next to Languages and select at least one language and region.
- Set the keyboard shortcut you will use to start and stop Dictation.
- Decide whether to enable Auto-punctuation. When supported for the selected language, it can insert common commas, full stops and question marks automatically.
The exact language list and available options depend on your Mac’s region and the language you choose. If a language cannot be selected, Dictation is not offered for that language-region combination on your system.
Choose languages and switch between them
In System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, click Edit beside Languages. Select a language and its region, then add any other languages you use. Enabling several languages gives you a way to switch without returning to Settings.

When more than one language is enabled, a language indicator appears beside the insertion point while Dictation is active. Click that indicator and choose the language you want. On a keyboard with a Globe key, pressing the Globe key can switch among enabled languages. The available switch method depends on the keyboard model and language configuration.
Do not assume every language has the same behavior. Auto-punctuation, emoji commands and other speech features may be unavailable or different in some languages and regions. If words are consistently transcribed in the wrong language, stop Dictation, switch the language indicator, and start again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet a shortcut that you can use reliably
The Dictation panel includes a shortcut setting. You can use the listed key combination, customize it, or use the Mac’s dedicated Microphone key when your keyboard has one. Pick a shortcut that is easy to press without conflicting with a command you use in your main apps.
After changing the shortcut, test it in a blank text field. If nothing happens, return to System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and verify that the new combination is displayed. A shortcut change affects how Dictation starts and stops; it does not change the selected language or microphone.
Start, pause and stop Dictation
Start in any text field
- Click where you want the words to appear.
- Press the configured Dictation shortcut, press the Microphone key if your Mac has one, or choose Edit > Start Dictation from the app’s menu bar.
- Wait for the highlighted or pulsing cursor, or the readiness tone.
- Speak at a steady pace. Text appears at the insertion point as macOS recognizes it.
The command Edit > Start Dictation is useful when a keyboard shortcut is unavailable or another app has captured the key combination. The command appears only in an app and field that can accept text.

Keep working while you speak
On Macs with Apple silicon, you can type while Dictation is active. Typed characters go into the field, and when you stop typing, the cursor resumes accepting dictated speech. This is useful for correcting a name, inserting a code or adding a short term that is easier to type than pronounce.

Stop Dictation
Press Escape, press the Microphone key, or press the Dictation shortcut again. Dictation also stops automatically after 30 seconds without detected speech. If it stops while you are thinking, start it again and continue in the same field.
Speak punctuation, paragraphs and formatting
Say punctuation by name rather than trying to vocalize the visual symbol. The command is interpreted at the cursor position.
| Say | Result |
|---|---|
| “comma” | , |
| “apostrophe” | ‘ |
| “exclamation mark” | ! |
| “new line” | One Return, moving to the next line |
| “new paragraph” | Two Returns, starting a new paragraph |
| “heart emoji” | The corresponding emoji, where supported by the language |
Apple’s Dictation command set also includes capitalization, symbols and formatting commands. The names and supported commands can vary by language. If a command is inserted as ordinary words, check that the command is supported for the active language and that you paused briefly before saying it.
Auto-punctuation versus spoken punctuation
With Auto-punctuation enabled, macOS can add common commas, full stops and question marks based on your speech. This is convenient for informal notes, but it may not place punctuation exactly where you want it in technical writing, lists or quotations. You can leave Auto-punctuation on and still say punctuation explicitly.

A practical dictation workflow
Prepare the document
Open the app and place the insertion point before starting. If you need separate sections, type or dictate “new paragraph” at each break. For a form, click the first field, dictate its content, stop, then click the next field and start again; Dictation does not automatically move through unrelated controls.
Draft in short, complete phrases
Speak a sentence or two, then pause to inspect the text. Short review cycles make it easier to catch a wrong name, number or homophone before the error spreads through a long paragraph. Use spoken punctuation at the end of a sentence when Auto-punctuation is off.
Handle names, codes and unusual terms
Spell an unfamiliar word aloud or type it while Dictation is active. Product codes, email addresses and mixed-case identifiers are often clearer when entered from the keyboard. You can resume dictation immediately after typing on an Apple-silicon Mac.

Privacy and audio-processing choices
The Dictation panel displays information below the feature controls about whether an internet connection is required and whether general text Dictation is processed on the Mac or sent to Siri servers. Read that notice for the language and region you selected; the processing method is not identical for every configuration.
During setup, macOS may ask whether you want to Share Audio Recordings. Choose Share Audio Recordings or Not Now. You can change this decision later at System Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Improve Siri & Dictation.
Apple also states that stored audio interactions associated with a random identifier and less than six months old can be deleted. Use the controls offered in the Siri and Dictation privacy settings if you want to remove those stored interactions.

| Capability | Standard Dictation | Voice Control |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Enter spoken words into the active text field | Operate the Mac with spoken commands |
| Typical commands | Punctuation, new lines, capitalization, symbols and supported emoji | Commands that replace keyboard, mouse or trackpad actions, including navigation and system controls |
| Availability together | Unavailable while Voice Control is on | Must be turned off before standard Dictation can be used |
| Best choice for | Writing messages, notes, documents and form entries | Opening, selecting, clicking, navigating and controlling the Mac by voice |
If you only need to compose text, leave Voice Control off and use Dictation. If you need to say commands such as opening a menu or clicking a button, Voice Control is the appropriate feature, but it replaces standard Dictation while enabled.
Fix Mac Dictation when it does not work
Nothing starts when you press the shortcut
- Open System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and confirm that Dictation is on.
- Check the shortcut shown there and press that exact combination. If another app uses the same keys, choose a different Dictation shortcut.
- Try Edit > Start Dictation in the app’s menu bar.
- Click inside a text field first. Dictation cannot insert text when no editable field has focus.
- Make sure Voice Control is off, because standard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is active.
Dictation starts but produces no text
- In System Settings > Sound > Input, select the intended microphone and watch the input meter while speaking.
- Raise the input volume if the meter barely responds.
- If the Mac lacks an internal microphone, connect an external microphone or USB headset and select it in the Dictation or Sound settings.
- Move closer to the microphone and remove anything covering its opening.
- Stop Dictation and start it again after changing the input source.
The wrong words or language appear
- Open the language editor next to Languages in the Dictation panel and confirm the language and region.
- When several languages are enabled, click the language indicator beside the cursor or press the Globe key to select the correct one before speaking.
- Check whether the command or Auto-punctuation feature you expect is supported in that language.
- For names, codes and technical terms, type the item or spell it aloud, then continue dictating.
Text contains unwanted punctuation
- If punctuation is appearing where you did not say it, turn off Auto-punctuation in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.
- With Auto-punctuation off, say “comma,” “apostrophe,” “exclamation mark,” “new line” or “new paragraph” explicitly.
- If a command appears as words, verify the active language and use the command name supported for that language.
Dictation stops unexpectedly
- Remember that macOS stops Dictation automatically after 30 seconds without detected speech.
- Speak soon after the readiness tone and keep the microphone input active while you pause.
- In a noisy or echo-prone room, try a headset microphone.
- Check the input meter and volume again if the Mac appears not to hear you.
Choosing a microphone for Mac Dictation
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance supports using a headset or external microphone when the Mac has no internal microphone, the room is noisy or echo-prone, or the input level is too low. The right category depends on your setup rather than a particular brand or model.
| Microphone option | Connection | Useful when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in Mac microphone | Internal | You work in a reasonably quiet room and the input meter responds normally | More exposed to keyboard noise, distance and room echo |
| USB headset with microphone | USB | You need a close microphone, hands-free use or better rejection of room noise | Requires wearing a headset and selecting it as the input |
| Other external microphone | USB or another supported connection | The Mac has no internal microphone or you want a dedicated position near your mouth | May require a stand, cable management and manual input selection |
After plugging in an external device, verify it in System Settings > Sound > Input, then select it in the Dictation panel if macOS does not use it automatically. Test the input meter before beginning an important recording or document.
Quick Recap
Useful habits for accurate, efficient dictation
- Keep the microphone at a consistent distance and avoid speaking toward a noisy fan.
- Use a headset in rooms with hard surfaces that create echo.
- Pause briefly before a punctuation command so it is separated from the preceding word.
- Use “new paragraph” for a clear paragraph break instead of repeatedly pressing Return.
- Stop and restart when changing languages; do not mix language switches in the middle of a sentence.
- Read back names, dates, amounts and URLs because a single misheard character can change their meaning.
- Use keyboard entry for passwords and other sensitive strings rather than dictating them into a text field.
