Put them in your ears, then press and hold either stem until you hear a chime. On an iPhone or iPad, you can instead open Control Centre, touch and hold the volume control, tap Listening Mode, and choose Noise Cancellation. The available modes and settings depend on your AirPods Pro generation and the operating system on the connected device.
What Active Noise Cancellation does
Apple describes the feature this way: “Active Noise Cancellation: Blocks out external noise to help you focus.” That wording is important: ANC reduces external sound for a more focused listen, but it does not mean every sound disappears. Fit, the surrounding environment, the AirPods Pro generation and the selected software options all affect what you hear. Apple’s listening-modes guide explains the controls and mode behavior in detail at Apple’s Switch between listening modes guide.

AirPods Pro present listening modes rather than a separate volume-like ANC slider. You choose a mode, and the earbuds apply that mode while they are connected. The default press-and-hold gesture normally cycles between Noise Cancellation and Transparency, but the cycle can be changed to include two or three modes.
Listening modes explained
| Mode | What it is for | Availability notes |
|---|---|---|
| Noise Cancellation | Reduces external noise so you can concentrate on the audio you are playing. | Available as a listening mode on AirPods Pro; the exact controls depend on model and software. |
| Transparency | Lets surrounding sound through so you can remain aware of what is happening around you. | Commonly included in the press-and-hold cycle; it can be selected from supported Apple-device controls. |
| Adaptive Audio | Combines Noise Cancellation and Transparency behavior, adjusting noise control as conditions change. | Only specified newer AirPods models support it. Do not assume that every AirPods Pro generation offers this option. |
| Off | Turns listening-mode processing off when the model and settings expose this choice. | On some newer models, you must first enable Off in settings before it appears in the mode cycle. |
Apple’s Adjust listening mode settings guide is the reference for which modes your particular AirPods and software expose. If a mode in this table is missing from your controls, that absence can be model- or version-specific rather than a sign that pairing failed.

Before you start
- Complete pairing: Set up the AirPods Pro with an Apple device using Apple’s pairing flow.
- Confirm the connection: Wear one or both earbuds and verify that they are connected before trying to change a listening mode.
- Know that settings follow your account: After AirPods are set up with one Apple device, Apple says they can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Check the model and software: Adaptive Audio, the Off option and one-AirPod Noise Cancellation are not universal. The labels shown on your device can also change between operating-system versions.
Apple’s AirPods User Guide provides device-specific guidance, while Change the settings of your AirPods and AirPods Pro covers the controls used to customize the stems and listening modes.
Connect AirPods Pro before changing the mode
Listening-mode controls apply to connected AirPods Pro, not merely to earbuds that are inside their case or previously paired. Complete the on-screen Apple pairing flow for your device, then put one or both earbuds in your ears. Once the device recognizes them as connected, use one of the control methods below.
Automatic connection to another Apple device requires that the AirPods have already been set up and that the devices are signed in to the same Apple Account. If the earbuds are connected to a different device, change the active audio connection first; otherwise, a mode change made on the wrong device may not affect the AirPods you are wearing.

Turn on ANC from the AirPods themselves
- Put the AirPods Pro in your ears. You may wear one or both, depending on the setting you want to use.
- Press and hold the stem on either AirPod.
- Keep holding until you hear the chime.
- Listen for the next mode in the configured cycle. If Noise Cancellation is one of the selected modes, repeat the press-and-hold gesture until it is announced by the mode behavior you recognize.
The gesture does not always switch only between ANC and Transparency. Apple lets you choose whether the press-and-hold action cycles through two or three listening modes. Therefore, the number of times you need to hold the stem depends on your configuration and your AirPods Pro model.
Turn on ANC from an iPhone or iPad
- Make sure the AirPods Pro are connected to the iPhone or iPad.
- Open Control Centre.
- Touch and hold the volume control.
- Tap the Listening Mode control.
- Choose Noise Cancellation.
This method is useful when you want to select ANC directly instead of cycling through the modes assigned to the stems. It also makes the currently available choices visible, which helps you determine whether your model and software support Adaptive Audio or Off.
Switch modes from Apple Watch or Mac
Apple also documents listening-mode switching from an Apple Watch and a Mac when the AirPods Pro are connected to those devices. The exact controls and labels are device- and software-dependent, so use the listening-mode control presented for the connected AirPods rather than assuming that the iPhone menu path is identical. The underlying requirement remains the same: the AirPods must be connected to the device whose controls you are using.

Customize what press-and-hold does
By default, pressing and holding an AirPods Pro stem switches between Noise Cancellation and Transparency. You can change the action and select which two or three modes the gesture cycles through.
- On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap the name of your connected AirPods.
- Find Press and Hold AirPods.
- Select Left or Right to configure that earbud.
- Ensure the action is set to Listening Mode.
- Select the two or three modes you want the press-and-hold gesture to cycle through.
On some software versions, the relevant controls appear under Controls & Gestures instead. If you do not see the exact wording above, look for that section in the AirPods settings. Apple notes that menu labels can vary across operating-system versions; the current control descriptions are maintained in Apple’s AirPods settings guide.
Use Noise Cancellation with one AirPod
AirPods Pro include an accessibility setting that can allow Noise Cancellation while only one AirPod is being worn. Apple documents this as Noise Cancellation with One AirPod. It is separate from the normal listening-mode cycle and may not be available on every AirPods Pro model or operating-system version.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap AirPods.
- Select your AirPods Pro.
- Enable Noise Cancellation with One AirPod, if the option is shown.
Apple also describes equivalents for other supported devices. If the option is absent, verify the specific AirPods Pro generation and software version before treating it as a fault. The availability and menu wording are documented in Apple’s listening-mode settings guide.
How to choose the right mode
Choose Noise Cancellation when reduced outside sound is the priority
Select Noise Cancellation when your goal is to focus on the audio and reduce the amount of surrounding noise reaching you. The mode is designed to block external noise, but Apple does not promise complete silence and the support material does not provide a universal percentage of noise reduction. Avoid judging the feature by an unsupported numeric expectation.
Choose Transparency when awareness matters
Transparency is the appropriate choice when you want surrounding sounds to remain audible. It is useful whenever hearing the environment is more important than minimizing it. Because Transparency and Noise Cancellation serve opposite listening goals, switching between them is often more practical than changing the volume of the same mode.

Choose Adaptive Audio only when your model offers it
Adaptive Audio is not a generic name for every AirPods Pro ANC implementation. It combines Noise Cancellation and Transparency behavior and adjusts noise control as conditions change, but Apple limits it to specified newer models. If it does not appear in Listening Mode, use the modes your AirPods present rather than trying to force the option through another menu.
Enable Off when you want no listening-mode processing
Some models expose Off as an additional listening mode. On certain newer AirPods, Apple requires you to enable Off in settings before it can be selected. If Off is missing, check the listening-mode settings for an enable switch; do not assume that the press-and-hold gesture is malfunctioning.
Control-cycle planning
| What you want from the stem | Suggested configuration | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast switching between focus and awareness | Listening Mode with Noise Cancellation and Transparency selected. | Each hold moves directly between the two contrasting modes. |
| Access to automatic adjustment | Include Adaptive Audio only if your model supports it. | The gesture can reach the adaptive option without opening Control Centre. |
| Access to an unprocessed state | Enable and include Off where your model provides it. | Some newer models hide Off until it is enabled in settings. |
| Different behavior for each earbud | Configure Left and Right separately under Press and Hold AirPods. | Apple lets you select the earbud whose stem action you are changing. |
Adding a third mode makes the cycle longer. If direct selection is more important than a short gesture cycle, use the iPhone or iPad Listening Mode control instead.

AirPods Pro generations do not expose identical features. The model can determine whether Adaptive Audio, Off, or one-AirPod Noise Cancellation is available. The connected device’s operating system can also change the label or location of the control. Apple’s support pages use related but not always identical wording, including Listening Mode, Press and Hold AirPods and Controls & Gestures.
Use this order when a documented option is not visible:
- Confirm that the AirPods Pro are connected to the device you are operating.
- Open the AirPods entry in Settings and look for the current controls and gestures section.
- Check whether the specific AirPods Pro generation supports the mode or accessibility option.
- Check the operating-system requirements for that model using Apple’s current support documentation.
These checks distinguish a model or software limitation from a mode-selection mistake. They do not establish that the earbuds have a hardware fault.

A first-use checklist
For a predictable first setup, work through the process in this order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Complete pairing on the Apple device you plan to use first.
- Put the earbuds in your ears and verify that the device reports them as connected.
- Open Control Centre and inspect the Listening Mode choices before changing any gesture settings.
- Select Noise Cancellation once so you know the direct device control works.
- Open the AirPods entry in Settings and decide whether the stem should cycle through two or three modes.
- Configure the left and right stems separately if you want them to behave differently.
- If you normally wear one earbud, check Accessibility > AirPods for the one-AirPod Noise Cancellation option.
- Test the press-and-hold gesture and note the order of the modes in its cycle.
This sequence separates connection questions from customization questions. It also prevents a common mistake: changing the stem action before confirming that the AirPods are connected and that Noise Cancellation is offered for that model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common setup pitfalls
- Changing a mode while the earbuds are not connected: Being paired in the past or sitting in the case is not enough. The controls apply to the active connection.
- Expecting every model to show every mode: Adaptive Audio, Off and one-AirPod Noise Cancellation depend on the generation and software.
- Assuming one hold always means ANC: The stem may be cycling through three choices if you enabled a third mode.
- Looking for one exact menu name: Apple may place the same controls under Press and Hold AirPods or Controls & Gestures, depending on the operating-system version.
- Using the wrong device: AirPods can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Make sure the iPhone, iPad, Mac or Watch you are operating is the one currently connected.
- Interpreting reduced sound as total silence: Apple’s description is that ANC blocks external noise to help you focus, not that it removes every sound.
What you need—and what you do not
The setup requires the AirPods Pro, a compatible Apple device for pairing and a supported operating-system configuration for any model-specific features. Apple’s online AirPods User Guide supplies the instructions; a separate physical manual is not needed for this task. The setup instructions do not establish a need for replacement ear tips, repair parts, special tools or third-party utilities.
If you are comparing products before buying, identify the AirPods Pro generation first. The phrase “Apple AirPods Pro” covers multiple generations, while the listening-mode features are not identical across them. Check the current Apple listing and support documentation for the exact model rather than assuming that a feature described for a newer pair will appear on an older one.
What to verify after selecting ANC
- The AirPods Pro are in your ears and connected to the device you are controlling.
- The selected mode is Noise Cancellation, not Transparency, Adaptive Audio or Off.
- The stem gesture is cycling through the modes you intentionally selected.
- If you are using one earbud, the one-AirPod accessibility option is enabled and supported by your model.
- If you expected Adaptive Audio or Off, the option is actually listed for your generation and software.
If Noise Cancellation does not behave as expected after these checks, Apple directs readers to separate troubleshooting material for ANC. The listening-mode pages themselves do not provide a complete diagnostic sequence, so a detailed repair procedure should not be inferred from the mode-selection steps above.
Key limitations to keep in mind
Noise Cancellation is a listening mode, not a guarantee that every external sound will be removed. Apple’s official listening-mode documentation also does not establish one universal noise-reduction percentage or an independent performance ranking for different AirPods Pro generations. Treat the mode descriptions as functional guidance, and check your own model’s available controls rather than applying features from a newer generation to an older one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn on ANC on AirPods Pro?
Connect the AirPods Pro, put them in your ears and press and hold either stem until the chime. You can also open Control Centre, touch and hold the volume control, tap Listening Mode and choose Noise Cancellation.
Why does pressing the stem not switch directly to Noise Cancellation?
The press-and-hold action may be configured to cycle through two or three listening modes. Check the AirPods settings and see which modes are selected for the left and right stems.
Can I use Noise Cancellation with only one AirPod?
On supported models and software, enable Settings > Accessibility > AirPods > your AirPods Pro > Noise Cancellation with One AirPod. If the option is missing, availability may be limited by the model or operating system.
Why is Adaptive Audio missing?
Adaptive Audio is limited to specified newer AirPods models. Confirm the AirPods Pro generation and current software before treating its absence as a connection problem.
Where did the Off mode go?
Some models require Off to be enabled in listening-mode settings before it appears in the cycle. Other models or software versions may not expose it.
Can I change listening modes from a Mac or Apple Watch?
Yes, Apple documents mode switching on a Mac and Apple Watch when the AirPods are connected. The labels and controls differ by device and software.
Does Noise Cancellation remove every outside sound?
No. Apple describes it as blocking external noise to help you focus. It is not a promise of complete silence, and Apple’s support material does not provide one universal reduction percentage.
