How to Set Up and Use a Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ for the First Time

To use a Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ for the first time, identify the machine’s market and exact trim, rinse the removable tank, fill it with fresh drinking water, run the capsule-free automatic rinse, and then brew with a compatible Vertuo capsule. The first rinse uses a container of at least 1 litre and can take up to seven minutes. Do not put coffee in the machine during that cycle.

The safest approach is to keep the regional manual beside you from unpacking through the first brew. Pop+ versions can have different tank capacities, electrical requirements, warranty terms and bundle contents, so a procedure or specification from another country is not automatically applicable.

Check the exact Pop+ model before plugging it in

Vertuo Pop+ specifications are not universal. Nespresso’s US/Canada assistance listing describes one standard Pop+ configuration, while its New Zealand listing describes another. Deluxe versions and bundles can differ as well. Read the rating label on your machine and use the printed or digital manual supplied for your country.

Before disposing of the box, compare the model name on the machine with the name on the paperwork. Confirm whether yours is the standard Pop+, a Deluxe trim or a bundle. This matters when you order replacement parts, interpret light patterns, check the warranty or decide whether an Aeroccino frother is already included. If a general Pop-family instruction conflicts with your supplied manual, the manual for your exact machine and market takes priority.

Prepare a safe location and the removable parts

Choose a stable position

Place the machine on a level, dry, stable surface with enough room to remove the water tank, empty the capsule container and drip tray, and lift the brewing head. Keep the coffee outlet over a surface that can safely receive water during the initial rinse. Do not operate the appliance where it could be immersed or splashed.

Leave enough clearance to lift and lock the head without knocking the machine. Position the cup support and drip tray before starting so the rinse container can sit squarely under the outlet. A crowded counter can make a large rinse vessel unstable and can tempt you to open the machine while it is running.

Check the electrical supply

Use the voltage and electrical supply printed on the machine’s rating label and specified by your regional manual. A first-use guide for Saudi Arabia gives 220 V instructions for that market; that figure is not a universal instruction for North America, New Zealand or any other region. Never copy a voltage value from another country’s guide.

Do this check before connecting the cord. If the rating label, packaging and manual do not appear to match, stop and verify the model with the local Nespresso support channel rather than guessing. Electrical information is market-specific in the same way that tank and warranty information are.

Wash the tank and lid first

  1. Remove the water tank and its lid.
  2. Rinse and clean both parts before filling them. Nespresso’s instruction is: “Rinse and clean the water tank and its lid before filling it with fresh drinking water.”
  3. Fill the tank with fresh drinking water and refit it securely on the machine.
  4. Check that the tank is seated correctly; a tank that is not fully in place can prevent operation or stop water from reaching the brewing system.

Use ordinary fresh drinking water, not coffee, milk or a cleaning solution, for this first fill. Keep the lid fitted and check that the tank is stable before moving on. A correctly seated tank is one of the first things to recheck if the machine will not start or no liquid appears.

Assemble the cup support and drip tray

Fit the cup support and drip tray in the position appropriate for the cup size you intend to use. The support catches drips and helps position a cup beneath the outlet. Make sure the pieces are fully assembled before starting the rinse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the rinse, prioritize capacity over the normal drinking-cup position: the vessel below must hold at least 1 litre. Once the rinse is over, reposition the support for the cup you plan to use for coffee.

Run the first, capsule-free rinse

The first rinse flushes the brewing path before you drink coffee. It is not a coffee-making cycle and it does not use a capsule. Treat it as a one-time preparation step, not as an opportunity to test a capsule.

  1. Confirm that the water tank is filled and seated.
  2. Make sure there is no capsule inside the machine.
  3. Close and lock the brewing head.
  4. Place a container holding at least 1 litre under the coffee outlet. A small mug will overflow; use a bowl, jug or other vessel with enough capacity.
  5. Connect the machine to the correct regional power supply and switch it on if your model requires a separate power switch.
  6. Wait until the button light becomes steady. The Pop-family first-use procedure uses the steady light as the signal to begin.
  7. Press the coffee button three times within two seconds.
  8. Leave the machine alone while the automatic cleaning procedure runs. It can take up to seven minutes.
  9. Do not open or unlock the machine during the cycle. Wait until the procedure has finished before removing the container or preparing coffee.

The three presses are deliberately quick: they must occur within two seconds. Pressing once, pausing, and pressing twice more may not issue the same command. Do not keep pressing the button if the cycle does not begin; check the light state, tank position and exact manual instead.

The water expelled during this operation is rinse water, not a drink. Empty the container when the cycle is complete. If your Pop+ manual shows a different button sequence or light signal, follow that model- and market-specific instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan to remain nearby for the full cycle. The stated maximum is up to seven minutes, and opening the head or interrupting the procedure can leave you unsure whether the machine completed its programmed operation. Once it has finished, dispose of the rinse water, return the drip tray and cup support to the desired position, and only then prepare a capsule.

Make the first coffee

Use the right capsule system

Vertuo Pop+ brews with compatible Vertuo capsules. Check the package or product listing for the word “Vertuo.” Do not assume that a capsule made for another Nespresso system will fit: capsule families use different shapes and operating instructions.

This check is especially important if you already own capsules for another Nespresso machine. Keep those capsules out of the Pop+ unless the packaging specifically identifies them as compatible with Vertuo. Compatibility is a requirement for the brew cycle, not merely a preference about flavor or cup size.

Brew step by step

  1. Choose a fresh, compatible Vertuo capsule.
  2. Open the head after the rinse has finished.
  3. Insert the capsule in the orientation shown in the regional manual and on the machine.
  4. Close and lock the head fully.
  5. Place a cup beneath the outlet, using the cup-support position that suits its size.
  6. Press the brew button once.
  7. Keep the machine closed while it reads the capsule and brews.

Nespresso says the machine reads the capsule’s barcode and pre-wets the coffee. Consequently, a pause between pressing the button and the first liquid is normal. Do not repeatedly press the button simply because coffee has not appeared immediately. Repeated presses can make it less clear whether the machine is still carrying out the requested brew or whether you have issued another command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When brewing is complete, remove the cup carefully. The used capsule remains inside until you open the head; follow the manual’s direction for emptying it into the capsule container rather than trying to retrieve it while the head is locked. Keep the head closed during brewing and wait for the operation to finish before handling the capsule area.

If the first drink is not the size you expected, first confirm that the capsule was a Vertuo capsule and that it was inserted as shown for your model. Do not try to correct a compatibility problem by forcing the capsule or repeatedly opening and closing the head.

What the light and water flow mean during first use

A blinking light is not automatically an error. Nespresso identifies blinking as a possible sign that the machine is heating or carrying out an operation. During a requested rinse, descaling cycle or emptying operation, the machine may dispense water without coffee. That water-only flow can be expected in those modes.

  • Steady light before the rinse: the Pop-family procedure uses this state as the cue to press the button three times.
  • Blinking while coffee is flowing normally: the machine may be operating normally; allow the cycle to finish.
  • Water only after you requested cleaning, descaling or emptying: the machine may be performing that operation rather than trying to brew coffee.
  • No coffee immediately after pressing brew: allow time for barcode reading and pre-wetting before treating the delay as a fault.
  • A changed pattern after an interruption: stop guessing and compare the pattern with the exact Pop+ light guide, because remedies are model-specific.

For a particular blink pattern, consult the light guide in the Pop+ manual. Patterns and remedies are model-specific, so a generic interpretation can send you to the wrong step. The key distinction for a new owner is whether you asked for coffee, a rinse, descaling or emptying; water flow and blinking can be normal in those programmed operations.

Troubleshoot the first brew in a logical order

Symptom Checks to make What to do next
The machine will not start Confirm that the tank contains water, is seated correctly, and that the head is fully closed and locked. Correct the issue, then retry. If the light still indicates a fault, use the official Pop+ light and troubleshooting guide for your region.
The button is blinking Determine whether the machine is heating or running a requested operation. Wait for the operation to finish. A blink while coffee flows normally can be expected.
Only water comes out Check whether you started cleaning, descaling or emptying, and confirm that the capsule-free rinse is not still running. Allow that operation to complete. If you intended to brew, verify that a compatible Vertuo capsule is installed and the head is locked.
No liquid appears after pressing brew Check the tank, capsule position and lock. Allow for barcode reading and pre-wetting. If coffee still does not flow, follow the exact light-pattern instructions in the Pop+ troubleshooting guide.
The rinse container is filling too quickly Verify that the vessel holds at least 1 litre and is centered under the outlet. Stop only if the machine’s manual instructs you to do so; otherwise let the automatic cycle finish without opening the head.
The first brew was attempted with no capsule Confirm that the rinse has ended and that you are now following the brew sequence. Insert a compatible Vertuo capsule, close and lock the head, then press the brew button once.
The head will not operate as expected Check that it is fully closed and locked and that no capsule is incorrectly positioned. Do not force the mechanism. Use the manual’s model-specific instructions and light guide.

Do not diagnose a fault solely from a short pause or a blinking button. First check the tank, capsule, lock and the operation you asked the machine to perform. The sequence matters: a capsule is required for coffee, while the initial rinse specifically requires no capsule.

Know which details are regional

The tank, warranty, electrical rating, included accessories and bundle contents can change by country and trim. The US/Canada listing gives a 750 ml removable tank, 8.6 × 14 × 10.4 inch dimensions, 7.9 lb weight and a one-year warranty. The New Zealand listing gives a 1.1 L tank and a two-year warranty. Neither set should be treated as a worldwide specification.

Before ordering replacement parts or relying on an accessory claim, compare the model name and the contents listed for your market. A Pop+ bundle may include items that a standard machine does not, while a Deluxe trim can have different specifications. The manual supplied with your machine takes priority whenever it differs from a general Vertuo Pop-family instruction.

These regional differences also affect what you should tell another owner. Quote the capacity, dimensions, weight or warranty together with the market that published it. Calling the 750 ml tank universal, for example, would conflict with the 1.1 L figure on the New Zealand listing.

Routine cleaning after the first drink

After use

  • Empty and clean the capsule container and drip tray as needed.
  • Keep the water tank and lid clean; refill with fresh drinking water rather than leaving stale water sitting unnecessarily.
  • Use mild, non-abrasive cleaning methods.
  • Do not use strong or abrasive agents.
  • Never immerse the appliance.

These steps are ordinary care, not a substitute for the machine’s programmed cleaning or descaling procedures. Follow the regional manual for any operation that requires a particular button sequence. If you run a cleaning operation, remember that water-only flow is expected and does not mean the machine is making a failed coffee.

Descaling is not part of first setup

Do not descale a new machine as a first-use step. Descaling is later maintenance and must follow the exact Pop+ instructions for your market. Nespresso Australia publishes a six-to-twelve-month interval, but that is region-specific care guidance rather than a universal calendar rule. A Pop+ manual dated June 23, 2025, states that descaling mode becomes available after 30 or more coffees. Availability of a mode does not remove the need to follow the manual’s solution, quantities and completion steps.

If you use a descaling product, choose the procedure and product specified for your exact machine and region. Do not substitute a household cleaner or an abrasive agent. Keep descaling separate from the initial rinse: the first rinse uses only fresh drinking water and no capsule, while descaling is a later maintenance operation with its own instructions.

Adding milk drinks

A milk frother is optional; it is not required to set up or operate the Pop+. Nespresso describes using an Aeroccino3 to add frothed milk for drinks such as a cappuccino or flat white. Check your bundle contents before buying a separate frother, because some regional packages include accessories and others do not. Brew the coffee first, then prepare and add milk according to the frother’s own instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no need to delay the first setup while choosing a frother. Complete the water rinse and verify a successful Vertuo brew first. Treat the Aeroccino3 as a separate accessory with its own operating and cleaning directions.

A first-day checklist

  • Read the rating label and identify the sales market and Pop+ trim.
  • Set the machine on a stable, dry surface with room for the tank, head, tray and capsule container.
  • Rinse and clean the tank and lid.
  • Fill the tank with fresh drinking water and seat it firmly.
  • Assemble the cup support and drip tray.
  • Place a container of at least 1 litre under the outlet.
  • Run the capsule-free rinse by pressing the button three times within two seconds after the light becomes steady.
  • Wait up to seven minutes and do not open the machine during the rinse.
  • Insert a compatible Vertuo capsule for the first coffee.
  • Close and lock the head, place a cup, and press the brew button once.
  • Allow time for barcode reading and pre-wetting.
  • Keep the manual for your exact region for light patterns, electrical information, care and warranty details.

If another person will use the machine, point out the two easy-to-confuse rules: the first rinse has no capsule and needs a 1-litre container, while coffee requires a compatible Vertuo capsule and a locked head. This prevents the most common first-day setup mistakes.

When the first setup is complete

Your Pop+ is ready once the capsule-free rinse has finished and the first Vertuo capsule has brewed successfully. Future use is simpler: keep the tank supplied with fresh water, insert a compatible Vertuo capsule, lock the head and press the button. Reserve descaling for later maintenance, use the regional manual for its timing and procedure, and treat regional specifications such as tank capacity and warranty as market-dependent rather than universal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which capsules work in a Vertuo Pop+?

Use a compatible Vertuo capsule. Check that the package or listing says “Vertuo”; do not assume a capsule made for another Nespresso system will fit.

Why is the button blinking?

Blinking can indicate heating or another active operation. It may be normal while coffee flows or while the machine performs cleaning, descaling or emptying. Use the exact Pop+ light guide for a particular pattern.

Why does water come out instead of coffee?

The machine may be running a rinse, cleaning, descaling or emptying operation. If you intended to brew, confirm that a compatible Vertuo capsule is installed, the tank has water and the head is locked.

What tank capacity does the Pop+ have?

It depends on the market and trim. Nespresso lists 750 ml for a US/Canada configuration and 1.1 L for a New Zealand listing. Check your machine and regional manual.

Do I need to descale a brand-new Pop+?

No. Descaling is later maintenance, not first setup. Follow your regional manual; Nespresso Australia gives a six-to-twelve-month interval, and a June 23, 2025 Pop+ manual says descaling mode becomes available after 30 or more coffees.

Is an Aeroccino frother required?

No. A frother is optional. An Aeroccino3 can add frothed milk for drinks such as cappuccino or flat white, but check your bundle before purchasing one separately.

The Bottom Line

For a reliable first use, match the machine to its regional manual, wash and fill the tank, run the capsule-free three-press rinse with a 1-litre container, wait up to seven minutes, and then brew a compatible Vertuo capsule with the head locked.
