First read the model name on the machine or manual: the powered E‑TERRA and the locking-flask E‑DUO use different vessel-loading procedures and may use different cylinders and bottles. The instructions below follow SodaStream’s US support guidance; regional versions can differ, so use the manual for your exact model and market.
Identify the model before connecting anything
Do not choose a cylinder, bottle or carafe by the SodaStream name alone. SodaStream uses both Quick Connect and screw-in cylinder systems, and vessel compatibility is model-specific. Confirm the model printed on the machine, packaging or manual before setup.

Rules that apply to every automatic model
- Carbonate water only. SodaStream warns that other liquids can contaminate and clog internal parts, create excessive pressure, cause bottle failure and result in serious injury. Do not carbonate juice, wine, soda, syrup, flavored water or any liquid other than plain water.
- Add flavor after carbonation. Flavoring before the cycle can create foaming, contamination and pressure problems.
- Use cold drinking water. Fill the exact compatible vessel only to its marked fill line; do not overfill.
- Keep the maker upright on a flat, sturdy surface. Do not operate it if the carbonating tube is broken or damaged.
- Release pressure before removing the vessel. A bottle or carafe must never be forced out while it is still pressurized.
- Match every consumable to the model. Confirm the cylinder connection and the bottle or carafe type in the model’s manual.
Set up and use the E‑TERRA
1. Prepare the power connection
- Choose the pronged plug that fits your local outlet and connect it to the E‑TERRA power adapter.
- Route the adapter cord through the slot in the machine base. This keeps the cord seated as the maker rests on the counter.
- Install the compatible Quick Connect cylinder according to the model instructions.
- Place the maker upright on a flat, sturdy surface, then plug the adapter into an outlet. The machine lights briefly when power is connected.
Do not substitute a cylinder simply because it fits physically. Quick Connect and screw-in systems are not interchangeable, and a bottle that fits another SodaStream maker is not automatically approved for E‑TERRA.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Fill a compatible bottle
- Check the bottle marking or E‑TERRA manual to verify compatibility.
- Fill the bottle with cold drinking water to the printed fill line. Leave the required headspace; do not fill above that line.
- Keep the water unflavored. Add any drink mix only after the bottle has been removed from the machine and pressure has escaped.
The fill line is part of the pressure-management design. A different bottle, an overfilled bottle or a bottle past its approved service life changes the conditions for which the maker was designed.
3. Lock the bottle into the Snap‑Lock
- Make sure the E‑TERRA is upright and stable.
- Angle the bottle rest forward.
- Insert the bottle neck into the Snap‑Lock opening.
- Push the bottle up and back until the holder captures it securely.
The bottle should be held by the mechanism without you pulling on the carbonating tube. Never operate the machine with a broken tube, and never pull or bend that tube to make a bottle fit.
4. Select the carbonation level
For a 1 L bottle, press the button for the desired level: one bubble indicates light, two indicate medium and three indicate strong carbonation. For a 0.5 L bottle, the left button selects medium and the middle button selects strong according to SodaStream’s E‑TERRA guidance; do not assume the same button mapping as the 1 L bottle.
The selected light flashes slowly while carbonation is in progress and flashes quickly when the cycle is complete. Pressing any button stops carbonation. If you stop early, treat the bottle as pressurized and follow the release procedure before touching the holder.
5. Release pressure and remove the bottle
- When the selected cycle ends, pull the bottle gently forward only as far as the mechanism allows.
- Wait for the audible release of excess carbon dioxide.
- Let the Snap‑Lock release the bottle completely.
- Remove the bottle only after it is free of pressure, then add flavor if desired.
Never force the bottle out while it is locked or pressurized. If it does not release, stop pulling and allow more time for the pressure-release sound and mechanism to complete.
Set up and use the E‑DUO
1. Prepare the vessel and counter
- Verify that the glass carafe or bottle is listed as compatible with your E‑DUO model.
- Fill it with cold drinking water to its marked fill line. Do not use water that has already been flavored.
- Place the maker upright on a flat, sturdy surface.
The E‑DUO’s vessel options are not a license to carbonate other liquids. Whether you use the glass carafe or an approved bottle, the liquid inside must be plain water until carbonation is finished.

- Tilt the flask forward.
- Insert the compatible glass carafe or bottle into the flask.
- Return the flask to its upright position.
- Push the head down and turn the lever to the left to lock the vessel.
Do not start a cycle until the vessel is seated and the lever is fully in the locked position. If the vessel cannot be inserted without force, stop and recheck compatibility and orientation in the manual.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Carbonate and monitor the cycle
Press one of the three buttons for light, medium or strong fizz. Any button stops carbonation. A gas-release sound during the E‑DUO cycle can be normal, so do not interrupt solely because you hear that sound; stop the cycle only when you intentionally want to end it or the selected cycle has completed.
4. Wait, unlock and remove the vessel
- After the desired carbonation, wait three seconds.
- Turn the flask lever right to unlock.
- Allow excess gas to escape while the head rises.
- Tilt the flask forward and remove the carafe or bottle.
- Add flavor only after the vessel is out of the maker and pressure has been released.
The three-second wait and the rising-head release are part of the E‑DUO removal procedure. Do not hold the head down, bypass the lever or pull the vessel free while pressure remains.
Choose the right cylinder and vessel
Cylinder checks
Look for the connection type specified for your exact model and market. The US E‑TERRA instructions call for a Quick Connect cylinder, while SodaStream’s model information also distinguishes screw-in systems. A cylinder that belongs to another machine may not lock, seal or operate correctly even if its dimensions appear similar.
- Read the model manual before opening the cylinder compartment.
- Use the cylinder type named for that model, not a generic replacement based on appearance.
- Stop if the cylinder does not seat or lock smoothly; never force the connection.
- Keep the cylinder installation instructions with the machine for future replacements.
Bottle and carafe checks
Use only the vessel identified as compatible for the model. E‑TERRA uses a compatible bottle in its Snap‑Lock; E‑DUO accepts a compatible bottle or glass carafe in its flask. The brand name on a vessel is not enough to establish compatibility.
Inspect the vessel before every use. Do not carbonate with a cracked, chipped, deeply scratched or otherwise damaged bottle or carafe. Glass carafes can be used indefinitely only while undamaged; plastic carbonating bottles must not be used for carbonation after the printed expiry date.

Cleaning the machine after use
Machine and drip tray
- Never place the maker in water and never put the machine body in a dishwasher.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, non-abrasive approach. Do not use abrasive cleaners or sharp tools.
- Remove the drip tray and wipe spills so the machine base stays dry.
- The drip tray itself is dishwasher-safe, but it should be removed from the machine first.
Cleaning the tray separately prevents liquid from pooling around the powered base and avoids treating the appliance as dishwasher-safe when only the removable tray has that rating.
Bottle and carafe care
Follow the care label on each vessel rather than applying one rule to every bottle. SodaStream states that its glass carafes are dishwasher-safe, while plastic bottle care depends on whether the individual bottle is marked dishwasher-safe.
| Vessel marking | Care limit in SodaStream guidance |
|---|---|
| Hand-wash-only plastic bottle | Do not expose it above 50°C/120°F. |
| Dishwasher-safe plastic bottle | Do not expose it above 70°C/158°F. |
| Glass carafe | SodaStream says its glass carafes are dishwasher-safe; continue using one indefinitely only while it remains undamaged. |
Keep all carbonating bottles away from heat and do not freeze them. Freezing and heating can stress the vessel independently of the carbonation cycle. Check the printed expiry date on every plastic carbonating bottle and retire it from carbonation after that date.
What to do when something does not work
The cylinder will not install
Stop rather than applying force. Recheck the model name, confirm whether the machine requires Quick Connect or screw-in hardware, and consult the manual for your market. A mismatch is more likely than a need to push harder.
The bottle or carafe will not lock
Remove it only when no pressure is present, then verify the vessel model, fill line, orientation and locking position. E‑TERRA bottles must enter the Snap‑Lock with the bottle rest angled forward and then be pushed up and back. E‑DUO vessels require the flask lever right, the flask tilted forward for loading, and the lever left after the head is lowered.
The machine makes a gas-release sound
On E‑DUO, SodaStream notes that a gas-release sound during carbonation can be normal. Keep the vessel locked and follow the normal completion and three-second release sequence. On E‑TERRA, wait for the excess-CO₂ release before attempting removal.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The bottle is difficult to remove
Do not pull, twist or force it. For E‑TERRA, wait for the audible pressure release and Snap‑Lock release. For E‑DUO, wait three seconds, unlock the lever to the right and let the head rise before tilting the flask forward. If the mechanism still does not release, stop using the maker and consult the exact model support instructions.
The drink foams or the machine behaves abnormally
Check that the vessel contained only cold, unflavored water and was filled no higher than the line. Flavor must be added after removal. If the carbonating tube is broken, discontinue use rather than attempting a workaround.
Before your first cycle
Set the machine where you can keep it upright and reach the controls without moving it during carbonation. Have the compatible, undamaged vessel and the correct cylinder ready before connecting anything. Check the outlet plug supplied for your region, route the E‑TERRA adapter cord through its base slot, and keep the manual nearby for model-specific symbols and connection details. For an E‑DUO, identify the lever’s unlocked and locked positions before inserting a carafe or bottle.
Do not improvise with an unmarked bottle, a substitute carafe, a cylinder from another system or a vessel whose expiry date and care marking cannot be read. If the model, cylinder connection or vessel list is uncertain, pause and confirm it through the local support page. A correct first setup is safer than trying to correct a forced connection after the machine is pressurized.

Which setup fits your machine?
Choose the E‑TERRA procedure when your machine has the E‑TERRA name, a powered adapter and the Snap‑Lock bottle holder described above. Choose the E‑DUO procedure when the machine identifies itself as E‑DUO and uses the rising-head flask and lever. Do not combine the E‑TERRA bottle-loading steps with the E‑DUO flask, or assume that an E‑DUO carafe belongs in an E‑TERRA.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I carbonate juice, wine, syrup or flavored water?
No. SodaStream support says to carbonate water only. Other liquids can contaminate and clog internal parts, create excessive pressure, cause bottle failure and result in serious injury. Carbonate plain cold drinking water, release the pressure, remove the vessel and add flavor afterward.
Which cylinder does a fully automatic SodaStream use?
It depends on the model and market. The US E‑TERRA instructions specify a Quick Connect cylinder, while SodaStream also sells machines using screw-in systems. Check the exact manual; physical fit or the SodaStream name alone does not prove compatibility.
Why must the water be cold and kept below the fill line?
Both the cold-water instruction and the marked fill line are part of the maker’s specified operating setup. Overfilling, using a different vessel or using liquid other than plain water changes the pressure conditions. Fill only the compatible bottle or carafe to its line.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy will my E‑TERRA bottle not come out?
Do not pull or twist it. Wait for the audible excess-CO₂ release, then let the Snap‑Lock release the bottle. Never force a bottle out while it is locked or pressurized.
Is a gas-release sound from the E‑DUO normal?
SodaStream notes that a gas-release sound during E‑DUO carbonation can be normal. Keep the vessel locked, wait for the selected cycle to finish, then wait three seconds, unlock the lever to the right and allow the head to rise before removal.
Can I put the machine or every bottle in the dishwasher?
No. Never put the maker in water or a dishwasher; only the removable drip tray is dishwasher-safe. SodaStream says its glass carafes are dishwasher-safe. Plastic bottles must be checked individually: hand-wash-only bottles must stay below 50°C/120°F, and dishwasher-safe bottles below 70°C/158°F.
How long can I use a plastic carbonating bottle?
Do not carbonate with a plastic bottle after its printed expiry date. Keep bottles away from heat and do not freeze them. Glass carafes may be used indefinitely only while they remain undamaged.
Do the E‑TERRA buttons work the same for every bottle size?
No. With a 1 L bottle, one, two or three bubbles select light, medium or strong. With a 0.5 L bottle, the left and middle buttons select medium and strong in SodaStream’s E‑TERRA guidance. Follow the markings and manual for your model rather than assuming one mapping.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact model first, then use its specified cylinder and vessel. E‑TERRA requires its powered Quick Connect setup and Snap‑Lock bottle procedure in the US guidance; E‑DUO uses a lever-controlled carbonating flask for a compatible bottle or glass carafe. In either case, use cold plain water to the fill line, add flavor only after carbonation, wait for pressure to escape, and follow the separate care and expiry rules for the machine, tray and vessel. When regional details differ, the local manual and support page take priority.
