In Windows 11, turn it on at Start > Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Touchpad. In Windows 10, search for Touchpad settings and set it to On. These steps match Lenovo’s support guidance for Windows 10 and 11. Exact menus and keys vary by model, and nothing here covers other operating systems.
Turn on the touchpad in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Choose Bluetooth and devices.
- Select Touchpad.
- Switch Touchpad to On.
Lenovo Support states: “Touchpad settings in Windows 11 can be found under Start, Settings, Bluetooth and devices, Touchpad.” Its IdeaPad guidance gives the same route.

Windows 10
- Type Touchpad settings into the Windows search box and open the result.
- Confirm the touchpad switch is On.
- Look below the basic switch, under Additional Settings, for more controls.
If the option is missing or greyed out, Lenovo recommends installing the latest touchpad/mouse driver for your exact model from Lenovo Support, or running Lenovo System Update.

Try the keyboard shortcut
Some Lenovo models have a key with a touchpad icon that toggles the touchpad. Lenovo cites F6, F8 or an Fn combination as examples on some IdeaPad models, but the key differs by model. Lenovo also says: “Some keyboards may not have a key for the touchpad.” Look for the icon on your function row, or check your model’s user guide. If the touchpad suddenly stopped responding, this shortcut may have turned it off.

Adjust how it behaves
Lenovo describes these options for Windows 10 Precision Touchpad devices:
- Tapping the pad instead of pressing to click
- Two-finger scrolling and pinch-to-zoom
- Scroll direction
- Three-finger gestures
Older or non-Precision touchpads may not offer every control.

If the touchpad stops working when you plug in a mouse, look for Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected in the touchpad settings and tick it, where the option exists.
If the touchpad still doesn’t work
- Press the model’s touchpad key, if it has one.
- Open the Touchpad settings (path above) and confirm the switch is On.
- If a connected mouse seems to disable the touchpad, enable the option to leave it on.
- If options are missing or greyed out, open Device Manager and look for a warning on the touchpad driver. Update it if one appears. Otherwise, download the touchpad/mouse driver for your exact model from Lenovo Support, or use Lenovo System Update.
- If the touchpad still doesn’t appear, use your model’s Lenovo support page or user guide. Lenovo’s guidance doesn’t give one BIOS route or replacement-part advice that applies to every model.
Changing settings without a working touchpad
You don’t need a mouse. Press Windows key + I to open Settings, search for touchpad, and move through results with the arrow keys and Enter. Lenovo’s troubleshooting page also describes using Tab to reach the touchpad switch and Space to toggle it. A USB mouse is a convenient stopgap, but it isn’t required, and setting up the built-in touchpad costs nothing.
